Hmmm, it’s almost as if he has a new book and public speaking gigs that might be affected by reports of his leadership being potentially rubbish. Sorry, Reggie, you were a good meme, but I’m doubtful this culture in your company just happened to spring up after you left.
@Snatcher the main one that everyone references are the Magypsies: an ancient tribe of fairies who are described as having no gender but appear as middle aged men in drag. Much of their characterisation and dialogue is rooted in Japanese okama stereotypes. I don’t think it’d be impossible to localise them but I also see why no one has attempted to in an official capacity.
The simple fact of the matter is that Mario has to change in order to be adapted for film. The setting is so abstract and broad in the games that you could never translate it 1:1. People are lauding the Sonic films all of a sudden as if they didn’t have the world’s most uphill battle to garner that favour, so I say give them the benefit of the doubt for now. Not a fan of Chris Pratt but Miyamoto being heavily involved gives me optimism until I see some footage.
I can’t really envision Nintendo, whose already slow enough to adopt industry standards, going for something as obtuse as the blockchain. I somehow doubt that crypto bros align with their demographic.
Really enjoyed it for what it was. It’s dumb, and it’s weird, and it’s way too long, but Sonic fans will get a kick out of all the fan service. I’m shocked their utilising the series’ lore as much as they are.
There’s a middle ground to be struck between immediately decrying any sexual content in gaming as tasteless, and defending the big boobas in XC2 as anything more than shallow pandering.
Considering that a big part of Nintendo’s brand is making the executives (especially Reggie back in the day) appear like loveable goofs, this seems particularly icky to me. Hope it’s not true, and Nintendo firing for a breach of NDA sounds about right, but we’ve seen enough stories of companies abusing their employees in this industry for me to really be surprised.
That logo and art direction really make this come across as a Crash 4 clone. Trailer left me pretty cold too. And why would you make a platformer about a kangaroo and not make the jumps super bouncy and boingy? God I’m ranting.
I’ll get it when it’s on sale. Even the standard edition is too rich for my blood. I’m a casual Sonic fan interested in having the classics in one easy collection, but the bells and whistles driving this up to a premium price tag mean nothing to me.
I was thinking to myself recently that Kid Icarus Uprising sort of became what a dream Star Fox game would look like. Blistering and cinematic rail shooting, married with excellent ground combat that’s high on variety. All in a big budget but delightfully campy story where the characters are constantly bantering with one another. It even had an awkward control scheme too lol.
Pleased to see the comments resisting the urge to make a joke about working for Bowser. Considering how image conscious Nintendo is, hopefully they swiftly address this.
@shgamer hard disagree. Kojima was Konami’s most bankable personality and his Silent Hills demo continues to be one of the high profile what ifs in gamer culture. His games were merely becoming too expensive for a company that was becoming increasingly keen on cutting corners to make quick cash.
I think the writing was on the wall when it skipped the February direct. I like that Nintendo is keeping their cards close to their chests. While not having a lot to go on can be frustrating, it also keeps the hype train firmly on the rails. Nintendo games usually resemble the finished product when footage is shown so their coyness with Zelda suggests to me a commitment to deliver something that will absolutely meet whatever expectations they set with marketing.
For as acclaimed as their titles often are, Nintendo rarely seems to rub up against the hype culture that otherwise engulfs this industry. Usually, they’d just delay the game with a tweet like they did with Advance Wars. They’ve likely never felt under more pressure to deliver than they have with BOTW 2. An exciting yet unenviable position, especially now that Elden Ring has come to challenge them for the open world throne.
Such sad news! Coffee Talk has always intrigued me but I never got around to actually giving it a go. Seeing the outpouring of love for its creator, I might just rectify that later today. Rest in peace, far too young!
Absolute scum. I can only hope that Kotick does care about his legacy and reputation, and now has to spend the rest of his days writhing in the knowledge that the industry in which he made his name thinks he’s a vile, evil little toad man.
Walking into the pool table room in the groundskeeper shack, and the camera is framed perfectly so that you can see the giant spider crawling down the wall behind your character. I noped on out of there. I get why fixed angles have gone away nowadays but there was such an art to it.
Prince of Persia piques my interest. The originals are classics and it’s bizarre Ubisoft has sat on it this long. Still, given what’s come out about the company, I’ll likely pass.
@GsPandem it’s also cool to see these guys not viewing each other as rivals whose games are competing for an audience. The fighting game community really is such a melting pot.
Konami has been pretty happy to dole out compilations as of late so I’ll take a Silent Hill collection that isn’t utterly atrocious. The originals are so important to the medium of games.
Hopefully other companies follow suit. What a lovely little project. Square is frankly the GOAT when it comes to industry defying music. Now just ditch the NFT plans pls.
While EVO is a significant tournament to platform your game at, it’s no longer the only one. Smash has always thrived at a grassroots level and will continue to do so imo.
Eh. I’m officially fatigued for the time being. The idea that I only just got Brilliant Diamond and I’m already two games behind the conversation is exhausting.
Looks like they perfected the Souls formula, which in itself created a whole sub genre and has been regularly at the fore of gaming culture for the past decade. Seems to me the acclaim is wholly warranted. Can’t wait.
@Specter_of-the_OLED fighting games are incredibly performance reliant. If it’s going to play smoothly and accurately, the tech absolutely needs to be up to par. That’s why fighting games routinely skip Nintendo’s hardware. Smash is optimised for the Switch and even then, the online performance is abysmal. As for Street Fighter not being popular, I strongly disagree. Still one of Capcom’s best sellers and a series where two of the five instalments (II and IV) can be credited with single handedly creating a genre-wide renaissance.
On one hand, virtual consoles don’t seem all that straightforward to maintain in the age of the remaster, where 3rd parties are inclined to control the distribution of their own legacy content. Even so, I hope pressure continues to be put on Nintendo to properly address preservation of their own content. Did they somehow miss the enormous backlash towards PlayStation when they tried to pull a similar stunt?

I don’t mind, but it’s not my preferred direction for the series, given how interesting yet grounded the character designs in XC1 were.
Re: Nintendo Of America Criticised Over Treatment Of Part-Time And Contract Workers
If you truly love Nintendo, you’ll have the maturity to accept where they’ve gone wrong and want for them to embody whatever fantasy you have of them.
