Wind Waker breathed some much needed variety into the series, I think. It allowed Zelda to be more than just one particular flavour, and I doubt the likes of Skyward Sword, Breath of the Wild, Link’s Awakening on Switch, or the overwhelming majority of handheld entries that came after would be the same without its willingness to break the mould.
I find it so funny, reading about how they keep talking up this role as a game changing, earth shattering performance, and then remembering it’s for the Mario movie.
Nintendo’s 2022 has been pretty stacked and there’s still some high profile titles to come that we know about. I can personally live with it if there’s no general Direct for summer.
@Browny Final Fantasy VII is the ultimate “at the time” game. I think its legacy is earned, but being at the cutting edge of 1997 bodes badly in a medium as rapidly evolving as this.
@nessisonett agree totally. I don’t think people want more Mother, just more experiences that remind them of Mother, and on that front, we live in the best timeline.
Deeply sad news. A young and talented artist who seemed like a very bright spark in the lives of everyone he knew. I‘ll be sure to do a Black Eagles run in his honour the next time I play Three Houses.
@BinaryMessiah as I understand it, Nintendo doesn’t fully own Mother. Creator Shigesato Itoi needs to sign off on anything related to the IP, which is why all these fan projects have been thus far able to evade the Nintendo Ninjas.
Playing Earthbound on the SNES app for the Switch. Either you’re into it or you’re not, but it holds up really well in my opinion. It’s easy to see what makes it so special and why it sprouted a legion of fans that are still passionate about it to this day.
Exoprimal (I bet they’ll have renamed it Dino Crisis), Street Fighter 6, Resident Evil 8 DLC, Sunbreak, Fighting Collection and maybe a surprise announcement.
A Smash or Power Stone clone would be a fun fit for the Crashverse. Alas, much as I love the Bandicoot, I’m not at all comfortable with giving my money to Activision Blizzard as they currently are.
Loving all the Final Fight stuff in the trailer. Is Mike Haggar finally going to be a playable character? Just relieved they learned their lesson after V and, you know, content in the game.
@Jgangsta187 I think is the nail on the head. Nintendo still sees video games primarily as toys and not as art. It would also explain why their approach to preserving older titles is so woeful.
I’m torn. It’s obvious this game has way more polish and effort put into it than Mario’s other sports titles on Switch. I wouldn’t call the game unfinished, but bad practice is bad practice. Nintendo’s strategy to support games post launch are a mixed bag. They’ll do it for maybe a year and then pull the plug, draining the games of any meaningful incentive to come back to them. Characters are irritating when missing at launch but are ultimately superfluous additions that don’t anything that substantial. But that seems to be what Nintendo’s hedging it’s bets on, and based on previous games, it’s not going to work. Mario Golf is dead, Mario Tennis is dead, Animal Crossing was cut short well ahead of reaching its full potential. Smash is the only exception I can think of. Maybe Splatoon 2 with its splatfests.
Dead Rising seems like a no idea brainer on the RE Engine but I think many of Capcom’s IP would do better if the company released them at lower price points. Not everything needs to be triple A Resident Evil.
Mega Man X Legacy Collection 1 and Zero/ZX Collection are some of the best action platformers money can buy. The Classic collections are also very fun for what they are.
There’s something oddly commendable about the Sonic brand’s ability to redeem its many missteps them by running them through Dr. Robotnik’s Meme Bean Machine. You won’t see Illumination referencing Hotel Mario.
Nintendo set this level of expectation themselves when they initially released DLC for Mario Kart 8. The tracks released in those packs are some of the best content in the game imo, or at the very least, took full advantage of what was possible in the base game. The retro tracks, especially the GBA ones, were given a tremendous overhaul in scale and presentation. That’s the bar Nintendo set on the Wii U and that’s the bar people expected them to meet on the Switch. We know what DLC content for Mario Kart 8 looks like. Slightly zhuzhing up tracks made for a mobile game is a well below what they’re capable of.
One of F-Zero’s claims to fame is being a technical showpiece for the hardware it’s on. If Nintendo ever does play catch up with the competition’s processing power, they’d be mad not to revive the IP.
@Abeedo Bug Fables was a chore for me. It so rigidly imitates Paper Mario that it literally only exists to be compared to it. Same with Yooka Laylee and Banjo.
@KayFiOS loathe as I am to admit it, I don’t think Mega Man is a priority for Capcom anymore. Probably still a weird vibe around nominating a successor to Inafune. Dude wrecked the gaff and then dipped.
I’ve bought the pass so I’ll happily play the rest of the tracks but the first wave has left a bit of a sour taste. It really just seems they’re grafting content from Tour onto 8 without any effort to integrate them mechanically (no anti gravity) or graphically.

@Coalescence did you somehow miss the part where Kotick left a voice message to his assistant, threatening to have her killed?

Never buying an Activision Blizzard game again. Simple as that for me.

XC1 is one of the all time greats for me. Never played 2 and the more I hear about it, the less I want to. Maybe 3 will get me back into the series.

@KayFiOS yeah Advance Wars is the main one for me. Like, the game’s done. It’s just sitting there, I presume.
