Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (February 24th)

Same as the past few weeks: Splatoon for Wii U. I played a little of the solo mode back in 2015 then forgot about it. With the servers about to sunset, I took it out a few weeks ago to try online matches and have been hooked. Nearly 25 hours in the past two weeks and approaching 40 overall. I regret having missed out on this all these years but am looking forward to catching up on Switch.

I've only played Blue World but found it super-interesting. My one complaint was that the map wasn't constantly on screen but instead had to be swapped in for the first-person view. So it was difficult to gauge where you were going. Also, the visuals here look a bit last-gen to me.

I'm likely the only person on this thread who will say Splatoon for the Wii U. I bought it around launch, played a little of the single-player mode and then forgot about it ... until a couple of weeks ago. With the online servers in their final weeks, I decided to try online battles and have been hooked. I'm kicking myself for what I've been missing all these years!!!

Also a few hours of Mario Kart Wii so far.

Re: Soapbox: The 'Recharged' Series Proves Atari Is No Longer A Spent Force

The Recharged titles I've played are good, worthy successors to the originals, but if Atari wants lasting relevancy it is going to have to begin producing truly new content. You can only remake these games so many times. There's certainly room for arcade-style experiences in 2024, but they must present fresh ideas or they'll again be written off as living off their past, which they've essentially been doing — and not so well — since the '90s.

Re: Review: Harvest Moon 64 - Rose-Tinted Specs Recommended For This Beloved Farm Sim

Burning_Spear

For those of us who got into this series in the earlier days — certainly well before the current Marvelous team decided 38 makers scattered across your farm was a good thing — a lot of the game's appeal was in its chill factor and the sense that a farmer's prosperity stems from hard work. For us, HM64 is kind of like rewatching a television show from our youth. @KateGray knows this series well and would not offer criticism for the sake of cheekiness or to be cavalier. If your entry point to the series was later than HM64, you might look at this game as rudimentary and overly methodical, and I couldn't blame you.

@Darthmoogle I think it works as you said: You keep the collectible if you hit a checkpoint before dying but forfeit otherwise. But I have questioned myself on that now and then, thinking I'd secured something only to discover later I hadn't. I found a couple of levels last night I thought I had "fully completed" but were missing one flower coin. I would agree that it doesn't seem fair to award a collectible if you die before reaching a checkpoint. I've actually gone back and "rectified" that a few times on my own, so I could say I achieved it without charity.

Re: Mini Review: Retro Bowl - An Addictive 8-Bit Throwback That's Appropriately Super

@LinktotheFuture The Dolphins' offense was well constructed for that particular defense. Their O-line could pass block very well, and Marino was a master at getting the ball out quickly. So they were able to somewhat neutralize Chicago's pass rush. Chicago's corners, having to cover much longer than usual, couldn't stay with Miami's speedy receivers, and so Marino repeatedly burned them for big gains. As I said, perfect storm for Chicago's defense. No shame losing to Miami then though.

Re: Talking Point: If 'Switch 2' Is Backwards Compatible, What Will You Do With Your Switch?

Burning_Spear

I save all my old consoles and regularly play many of them, so my Switch will simply move to a secondary or tertiary position in my setup. Right now, I also have a Wii U, a Wii, a PS4 and a PS3 hooked to my gameroom TV, and I have a 3DS, a DS Lite, a GBA, a GameBoy Color and a PSP within four feet of me. And still hoping for the time to clear out this mess and get all my older consoles connected to one of the CRT TVs I'm hording. Nothing ever leaves this collection.

Re: Talking Point: Would You Buy A Digital-Only 'Switch 2'?

Burning_Spear

I would opt for the version that accepted carts, but with most Nintendo games requiring extensive updates these days, it really doesn't make much sense to go physical anymore. What's the point of having a collection of cartridges that will lack the entire game file once the system is no longer supported?
