One of the surprise announcements from the last 3DS Direct was that Super Mario Maker would be coming to 3DS. It makes sense given the device's renewed importance to the company, and the game could easily take advantage of 3DS features like Streetpass and Download Play. Unfortunately, it seems the game won't have support for the 3DS' main feature, stereoscopic 3D.
The official box art for Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS recently popped up online, and the North American version very clearly states the game "plays only in 2D". No doubt some will be disappointed to hear about this, but perhaps the game is more taxing on the 3DS hardware than it would seem. Also, after the mess that was the 3D effect in New Super Mario Bros. 2, perhaps this is a change for the better.
What do you think? Do you wish this didn't opt out of 3D? How do you think this portable port will compare to the Wii U edition? Drop us a comment in the section below.

Way to use the features given to ya Nintendo. What's the point of no 3d or online for this game to exist then??
no 3D, no real online. jeez. i'm still going to get it because i'm one of those people who does not have a wii u but man, they are doing everything they can to push me away from this game.
I don't see why I should bother with the 3DS version, unless if I lived in a streetpass heavy area (which I don't)
No search course by ID seems like a strange exclusion too. I'm sure they could come up with a filter for which course can't be played on the 3DS.
Expected, but still disappointing.
With this, the lack of character costumes, and no way to share stages online, Wii U owners have practically no reason to pick this up.
@OdnetninAges What? No costumes?! I was hoping they would create a bunch more for this...
But that's the 3ds cover. What if the new 3ds played 3d like Hyrule Warriors?
Literally should only cost Wii U owners who double dip $9.99 through MyNintendo. Not worth the cost otherwise. Not worth the time.
This is going to bomb bad! Not as bad as Federation Flop but nonetheless. Welcome to Nintendo where we don't listen to fan input/reaction and although we have great ips we have lost touch with what made them great! Seriously besides Pokemon they've lost one or two screws.
As a 2DS user, this really doesn't affect me, but I understand the backlash from others.
@GameOtaku Since when has a Mario game bombed? Oh right, back with Mario Party Advance back in 05' that still sold a half a million copies (not sure about Ultra Smash, but I'd be surprised if it sold less than that).
Edit: I'm excited for this game, but even I'll admit this is nothing more than a game to hold us over until Stage B begins in March.
No online? No 3D? Might as well release this for the GBA then. Remember Nintendo this is 2016 now, not 2001 (and even then the Dreamcast is already miles ahead).
Guess my money's going elsewhere, then. No 3D... what in the world were they thinking??? It should have at least been present when playing the game on the New 3DS, like Hyrule Warriors Legends...
I was thinking about picking this up but i will stick with my wiiu version. This really sucks for 3ds owners including myself. I wanted this game on the go but its missing to many features.
Oh and what's wrong with the 3d effect in NSMB2?? After the comment in the artical I had to give it a spin and it was just the right amount of 3d for a 2d side scroller. It's suppose to add to not take over the game.
I was looking froward to the 3D super Mario world 😢. Also I think the only reason people created levels in super Mario bros style was because of the mystery mushroom.
Also did anyone else notice the Thwomp and skewer in separate boxes in the announcement vid?
@Spoony_Tech
I almost beat nsmb2 in, like, 4 hours. And I used to SUCK at side scrollers (yeah, my first game was Mario kart).
It was a pretty lame game.
Yknow, I never even thought about the 3D effect at this point! Guess that what happens when I frequently play a 2DS lol
@SniffitisWhiffit I've been able to beat NSMB2 in an hour and a half (if I just play straight through it anyway)
@Gridatttack Can't even search by level ID?!?
I was already more or less turned off by the gimped online... think I probably will pass. I mean, why bother? What reason is there to get this if I have the Wii U reason? I mean I suppose it's portable, and that's the one reason I've been saying I want a 3DS version, but I didn't expect them to cut so many features (while seeming so far to add no new ones).
Sorry Nintendo, even I will probably pass and that's saying something...
Only one thing to say to that: No 3D no buy
@RyanSilberman
Man, you are everywhere today!
Anyways, as I said I was pretty bad at side scrollers. Also I spent a lot of the time getting 1000 lives in the mega mushroom level in the sky.
And so the being off topic begins...
That’s a bummer, I was looking forward to playing this in 3D. It was bad enough it won’t have online stage sharing, but I figured at least the 3D gameplay would help make up for it. But nope. They’re really trying hard to make the 3DS version suck I guess.
@RyanSilberman
Forgot to mention that the only reason I said that was to show how little thought was put into it ( they could use Mario maker levels, with limited items, and still make a better game).
@ShadJV
I'm just getting it because on weekdays I'm only home like 4 hours, not including chores, supper, and other stuff. At least this way I can play it on the bus.
Also they did add a new feature, but I don't have any friends getting this game even!
Yeeeeah nope. Just get the Wii U version at this point, then.... StreetPass course sharing sounds really good but the bad outweighs the good.
Did anyone seriously expect this to have 3D?
It was pretty obivous it wouldn't
@Spoony_Tech yet people still complain about what a huge disservice it is to wiiu owners that this was ported. Bunch of baby's I tell ya.
I'm not surprised at all, especially given that it can't handle all the Wii U levels.
At this point I'm just wondering if we'll hear a few more good things about this game.
@Spoony_Tech all of the wiiu to 3ds ports are inferior. Why is it such a suprise that this would also be inferior?
@MasterWario
It would be stupid of Nintendo to not announce everything good about this game and all the bad. Sorry but I don't think it's any different than what they say now.
Don't care about no 3d.
Do care about the game. Can't wait!
😐 we've known this since the Nintendo Direct but yes, it's disappointing. it should be in 3D at least on the New 3DS... they really gave up on that faster than the Wii U lol it only had one exclusive game and it was a PORT
What a useless port.
I can't see in 3D anyway.
@whitemaskedhero The 3DS cover and the New 3DS cover is the same, in this case.
Love how the vocal 3ds users begged for a port hard then when they get it find things to whine about. Did you really think they could port a home console games to an inferior handheld and it run exactly the same?
The game still lets you make and play levels, heck you can still share them it's not like it's unplayable. Be happy you got what you begged for.
The longer the 3DS goes on, the worse it's going to get. It should be retired before it gets to the point where every game is a struggle to run. Finish it up on good memories, not bad ones.
Lol: Everytime we hear about the game, we hear about features it doesn't have. It sounds like a really poor version of the original. Stick to the original, guys!
So notes to 3ds owners who want games from home consoles:
Before you see a game on a home system and say "hey my 3ds could definently run this." Or "this would be better on handheld." You should stop and think why it didn't come to it in the first place. Don't expect games like that to come without flaws and limitations and get mad at Nintendo for it.
That sucks. Love the way the cover has '3DS' in big letters on the front and ' Plays only in 2D' underneath in small writing. Ironic but amusing.
There was never a chance there would be 3D. If you expected it then you deserve the disappointment.
One thing is that this is an early box design for the 3DS version. Theres always the possibility that the game may be playable in 3d on the New3DS like Hyrule Warriors. Guess we'll find out closer to release.
@SniffitisWhiffit It's usually in Nintendo's interest to save good features of the game until closer to release to generate hype (see Pokemon Sun & Moon), and more importantly Nintendo doesn't spoil entire games before release.
"Oh here's the final boss of Pikmin 4! Here's his weak spots and I hope you enjoy fighting against him yourself!" said no one ever.
And I'm not too concerned with the game either way, I have the Wii U version after all. I'm just curious to see how the whole thing pans out; how many times the internet reports positive articles vs. negative articles about this game will be interesting for me to see.
To paraphrase Homer Simpson:
"No 3D and no online make Homer something something..."
This is the game that just keeps
givingtaking the piss.I already wasn't gonna bother with this one because I already own the Wii U version. After seeing this news, however, I...still have no reason to buy this game. 😛
@Lady_rosalina I gotta disagree with that; Hyrule Warriors Legends is much better than the Wii U version, visuals aside, and I had a good time with Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D, Xenoblade Chronicles 3D, and hopefully in the future, Yoshi's Wooly World 3D.
Unlike those games, this port takes away a lot of features from the home console version, then doesn't add enough new features to make up for it. If I could say anything positive about the game, it's that it'll allow me to share my levels locally, and it's gonna have more levels from the developers. I may get it as a supplement to the Wii U version, but only if I can blow $40 for it.
Quick port to fill the winter schedule confirmed.
@Iggy-Koopa Agreed, cheap port so Nintendo can say they've got something new for people who don't like JRPGs on the 3DS. I'm not bothered as I'm not a fan of 3D anyway and opted for a 2DS, but comparing this to the excellent Super Smash Bros for 3DS, you can see we're being fed the scraps from Nintendo's development table.
No problem with the lack of 3D, never using that thing in games anyway. The lack of proper online is what kills this one for me.
3DS owners finally get a little taste of what it's like to be a Wii U owner.
I like having the 3D on so this is a big problem for me. However, I've already got the Wii U version and the inability to share courses online has already completly put me off the game so this doesn't change anything to me.
already have this on wii u, no point for me getting this game again.
I don't have a problem with the title not using the 3D of the handheld. In fact VC titles, except 3D classics, are all in 2D and the experience is generally stronger. I see no difference in this logic because a release is in a box versus being digital when it derives from a classic title.
@MitchVogel I'm sure this is at least partly down to the fact that 100 Mario Challenge will be fed levels from the Wii U version, and getting those levels to display in 3D would obviously be tricky. Also tricky would be making levels in a 3D game where all the given assets' depths in the 3D field are pre-determined, because it could potentially limit players' choices in where they want to place certain items in their levels.
When a game is made for 3DS, on-screen item placement in the depth field has to be assigned during development; the effect is not just magically added by the 3DS display. So if a player decides that a particular item stands out or recesses more than they want it to in relation to the other items in their level, they might decide that the item is wrong for the level and ditch it.
Of course I'm just speculating, but I'm st least confident that it's not a matter of the hardware not being up to the task of displaying Mario Maker in 3D.
I can't understand the point of bringing this to 3DS if they aren't going to differentiate it from the Wii U by using the 3DS's capabilities. I'm astounded really that there will be no 3D support, it was the one feature that might have got me to double dip. NX can't come soon enough, because the last 9 months or so as a Nintendo gamer has been bit rubbish.
It might be that the game can't perform well enough with the 3D support?
It's just a port... ports are only good if it's an old game being enhanced for a new system... this is just to allow people without a Wii U to play the game, so it's obviously not going to be as good as the original.
They should have just waited and made a proper NX port for Mario Maker, which will probably happen anyway.
Just screams of "hurry up and get this game out".
I don't think a 2D platformer needs 3D, so I'm fine with this. I'm not fine, however, with all the other bs they are pulling with this port.
@JohnnyC Yeah, I mean, when you look at it from the perspective that it's probably going to end up in a 2DS bundle, it kinda makes sense. But I can't help but think of the ways this game could have actually benefitted from 3D, so I agree with the thinking that it's simply wasted potential.
The lack of online features is also baffling, it was a huge draw for the Wii U version and could have remained so here. But again, packaging the title with the cheaper 2DS may be the thinking here, get the kids sharing creations locally as opposed to downloading them over the 'net. It'll also sell like hotcakes over the seasonal period.
Roll on NX, where hopefully these head-smacking blunders won't be repeated.
That's ridiculous. What's the point of this game then? There is NO ONE for miles with a 3ds near me, and it's pot luck when walking around Dublin to get streetpass, even with college students walking everywhere now too.
I hope they change their attitude towards online gaming and sharing etc for the NX or it'll bomb, hard. I'll be holding out for at least a year to see how they handle the NX. Could be a very serious case of going third party if they don't catch up with basic stuff like this with the NX, sadly.
The only reason I'd want SMM on 3DS would be to bookmark courses to take with me.
@BensonUii Like what though? Besides the 3D effect, to my knowledge the only other things missing from the 3DS version are the mystery mushroom and online level sharing, and I doubt those things have much if anything to do with the system's ability to handle them.
@readyletsgo True. That's the thing. Are Nintendo suddenly going to flip a switch in March 2017 for NX and embrace these things seriously like voicechat, cross buy, a proper account and online? As of right now it doesn't look like it.
Dunno why they even bother to port it then.
"It makes sense given the device's renewed importance to the company". 😊😳😑. Ok
@SLIGEACH_EIRE 'True. That's the thing. Are Nintendo suddenly going to flip a switch in March 2017 for NX and embrace these things seriously like voicechat, cross buy, a proper account and online? As of right now it doesn't look like it.'
Yeah I can't see them doing a 180 on this stuff at all in 6 months time. Love my Nintendo games but they will always be classed as 'kiddy' as far as I can see
Meh what you expect from cheap ports? This bear minimum effort hoping for a sales boost from the calming wave the Wii u version created! Woolly world I expect the same another minimum effort hoping to churn a profit and grab back costs lost on the Wii u version (Shame it's a great game) and Pikmin I fear will be a tarted up version of Chibi-robo zip lash... (I enjoyed to a extent but seemed to be missing a lot) I hope I am wrong about Pikmin as I do not want it to be the nail in the coffin of the franchise like Chibi woolly world I can take or leave depending on price same for mario maker 3ds!
What I don't get is why not keeps players happy with more dlc for games? Mario kart? Pikmin 3? Rather than make full blown games for a system that failed to sell I'd happily pay for a few more tracks on Mario kart 8 and certainly pay to keep my Pikmin experience going! You have Mario party 10 captain toad. I know of the NX but Nintendo has lost me as a loyal follower I am excited to see what it is but will not be a day one purchase for me after supporting the Wii u from day on and going through all that drama... Bye bye 3rd party support... Hello games drought...feeble virtual console experience (still why there is no GameCube is beyond me and why not ask fans what they want to see released rather than moan that games are not selling) ... Tvii.... I could go on but lord knows I'm not a violent person and may God smite the person that says I am but I've said it before Nintendo needs to bring its game back and get people on board supporters and players alike otherwise I fear it may be Sega and the dreamcast all over again I mean you can't lead them on then cry non-consensual intercourse Cathy!
@Alexkidd1985 that r-word is on the profanity list I'm afraid.
If you can imagine that it is possible to fill the screen with objects.....the trick often used for speeding up the delivery truck when you first get the game.....Then I can understand how taxing it would be to display all those items in 3d. I think if there was 3d then there would be a much lower item limit on screen.
Anyway, I was never expecting 3d on mario game styles that never were 3d so I'm not fussed about that... but what I am fussed about is the lack of features, I'm not getting it because I have the much better Wii U version.
Also consider that the lack of mystery mushrooms could be down to license issues. Pokemon company capcom etc probably only signed deals for the Wii U version.
Its a map creator... How can that be too taxing on the system.
If the 3DS can run New Super Mario Bros 2 then i should be able to run this as well.
This is just a measure to save some time and work. Tho game feels more and more like a rushed port than anything else.
@Lady_rosalina
What are ou talking about? People wnted a Mario Maker game on 3DS and that is possible. People did not want such a bad port.
The 3DS version could have had different themes like Super Mario Land 1 and 2 and New Super Mario Bros. In addition to that add the old shool Mario Bros for cross compatibility.
The same online system should not be hard to implement. Its pretty much a search engine that lets you download and rate things you search for.
Instead of a lazy port people wanted a a good version of the game.
Next time you post please try not to sound too patronizing.
suckage.
"Also, after the mess that was the 3D effect in New Super Mario Bros. 2, perhaps this is a change for the better."
What the Hell is this article blabbering about? The 3D effect in NSMB2 was great, it was exactly what one could expect.
@Sinister: clearly, you have no idea what you're talking about, Super Mario Maker can have slowdowns on Wii U, so obviously it's complicated to make it run on 3DS. You have never used Super Mario Maker nor seen what levels you can do with it.
Just another why this port shouldn't exist.
This news doesn't really bother me as I never use the 3D feature.
I'm suprised Nintendo didn't add the bookmark feature into SMM3DS, that would atleast make up for the lack of i.d search.
What this suggests to me is -
NX won't have 3D support
NX will play 3DS games, but not Wii U games, so they quickly ported this to 3DS to sell copies to 3DS owners, then announce new NX owners will be able to play SMM at launch, and Mario Sports
Is there no amiibo support in this game? They should have made it work with AC amiibo, those things need to go.
I'm going to take this as a confirmation that the NX is going to be backwards compatible with the 3DS library. It's a long shot- but we all have to use the envelope sometimes!
Yep.
I can understand no 3D, it is heavily taxing on the system and you can see that in Pokémon XY/ORAS and in Monster Hunter X. Framerates go down the toilet.
No online, Nintendo, this isn't the N64 or the GBA. Like seriously, you cut one of the biggest selling points of the Wii U version.
Here's to Pokémon SM with online and 3D!
I'm pretty much only getting this for the hundred (or whatever it was) courses created by Nintendo.
I love Mario Maker, and was excited to see this was coming out, but lack of being able to actually upload courses is pretty unacceptable. It's like Nintendo is still a little afraid of the internet. I am in my late 20s and live in WV. No one else my age owns a 3DS around here.
@Barbiegurl777
Huh ? Mario Maker for NDS ?
Well... it will looks exactly like New Super Mario Bros. NDS.
But it will as good as New Super Mario Bros.2 if Nintendo put on 3DS. Despite lack of 3D effect, it still okay for me to play. I seldom play my 3DS games with 3D being Turned ON.
Oh... yeah. Happy Gaming also.
Can't say I'm surprised. It's a 2D platformer after all. In fact, I never cared for the 3D feature of the 3DS to begin with.
Still won't be getting this though, because I already own the Wii U version, and I wasn't that big of a fan of it.
@Apple-sensei "The game is in 2D. Some areas are also available in 3D." They used the same text for XY. Pokemon SM will have seldom use of 3D and I only hope for better looking battles... Monster Hunter of Zelda are much better examples of competent use of 3D, though Zelda doesn't support online.
I'm not defending Mario Maker on 3DS in any way. Just pointing out that Pokemon games aren't the best games to compare - in terms of graphic and usage of 3D.
Wow, this crap port gets even worse.
Keep milking it. Nintendo should have a donate button on the website so the hardcore Nintendo fanboys and girls can support them more and encourage them to keep doing the same.
@retro_player_22 really Dreamcast didn't last as long as the Wii u.lol some facts there buddy.o and it didn't have as many games as Wii u
Lol.
Does this game support anything?
Does the game have Mario in it though?
@Yosher lol. Legend
Also lost reavers is free now
Wow so many dang drama queens and whiners here. I mean seriously what benefit would 3D bring to this game in the first place? I have played NSMB2 and the 3D in that game wasnt that great to begin with. The also explained the lack on online was mainly out of intent to focus more on local communities with the 3DS version. Also likely cause of the fact that the 3DS probably couldnt handle all the Wii U versions levels especially since many of them use the amiibo costumes. You people should know very well by now when you port a console game to a handheld expect some sacrifices to be made.
Expected.
It seems like all Nintendo Life have to do to make the comment section explode is said "No" to something. What a bunch of spoiled brats we have here.
@faint It's not a surprise but to me it's just lazy. They can say it wouldn't be possible but I'm sure with the new 3ds it would be. I just think at this point in time they just want to pump out as many games to keep the 3ds ticking even if it mean stripping them down.
The only bad part that can make fans even more mad, is to take away the online servers from the Wii U version (which will probably happen here soon or by the beginning of next year with their next system). Other than that, the 3DS version is basically just a port of the Wii U version (just missing a few things from it) and it's probably just to tide over 3DS fans for now...until their next console announcement, or until something bigger or another title in the series comes out for 3DS.
@Ikramali Too bad your comment is so far down for many to see. Comment of the day for me and my day is just starting!
Wow...could there be a lazier port??
@Spoony_Tech lol. Thanks
Headlines: Nintendo finally gives up on 3D!!
Or not. Expected, but still disappointing. I highly doubt there will be any StreetPass or Download Play too. Just a straight port...well minus a few key features.
I buy ports of games because of 3d Nintendo. It's why I wanted DKCR, Xenoblade, and the upcoming Yoshi's. Still haven't got Hyrule Warriors yet but want that as well. Yes I love my 3d!
Maybe if the developer blogged about their child having a disease everybody on here would change their mind and buy multiple copies.
I am sure somebody on the development team is in the same situation but since they do not openly blog about it to promote their game and pander people will not support them.
@rjejr Where's that GuanoLoco logo?
I'm personally hoping that there's a better Mario Maker NX title. A powerful handheld that can play Wii U titles or versions/ports of Wii U titles would be fine, but just another handheld on a par with 3DS, I just wouldn't care I don't think. I wonder if this port is mainly for the 2DS kids' market where parents don't want too much online, just a simple game for their kids to play. I don't know. I'm wondering if Nintendo itself knows. I'm still trying to figure out why Pokemon amiibo cards aren't a thing. Surely... But, no. Nintendo logic makes my head hurt.
@InklingOrange Well, for a start, Nintendo isn't an Indie dev. And for seconds, inspiring genuine compassion in people isn't always the fruit of manipulation and if you haven't room for that, well then, that's a little sad. Also, Axiom Verge stands on its own as a quality title.
There was nothing wrong with the 3D effect in New Super Mario Bros. 2. I don't know what on Earth you guys are talking about. It was perfectly fine. Did it enhance the experience in any way? Not particularly. But the effect was fine. I can understand that it would have been a headache to implement 3D for all of the different art styles in Super Mario Maker 3DS, but it's still a disappointment.
As much as this seems to be a dud port, I suspect that this version will, in all likelihood, quicksand the Wii U version in sales considering the fact that the 3DS' userbase is over 4x that of the Wii U.
But you guys... Mario doesn't need online!!! >.> You're all so ungrateful!
Shame on no 3D. How hard could it be to include either 3D or online? New Super Mario Bros. 2 had 3D.
Allmoste like they are doing this to make Money instead of pleasing fans....
I don't care. Yeah, I love handhelds, I love Nintendo, I love Mario, I love the 3D effect, but above all else I love Super Mario Maker and I don't mind this being "the price to pay" for having the possibility to create stages on the go. If anything, it will allow the transition from Wii U to 3DS to be smoother in terms of resolution.
That said, "Super Mario Maker For Nintendo 3DS: Plays In 2D Only" almost sounds like a joke made up by Nintendo detractors rather than being an actual cover. Which is, for lack of a better term, stupid. As far as I can see the North American boxart is the only one to "boast" this blurb; my suggestion to Reggie is to change the title to "Super Mario Maker: Pocket Edition" or something along those lines for the game to not make a jackamule of itself.
I'd be glad to trade in the 3D effects in exchange for proper online support, which I'm pretty sure we'll see in a fan-demanded day-one patch, or not much later than that.
Last but not least, @MitchVogel, how dare you badmouth the NSMB2 3D effects. Well, jokes aside, that was well implemented - blurring the backgrounds whenever the 3D was on really made the level design stand out.
Since I don't have it yet , the Wii U version it will be . I don't understand Super Mario Maker 3ds with no 3D. call it Super Mario maker portable instead.
@Churchy
"... go crazy?"
Next up, there won't be any touch screen support.
@Sakura Since you asked so nice like (that's supposed to be read in a flirty Southern Belle accent, for no reason )
My thinking on 3DS games on NX is that there are so many copies floating around nobody would pay another $30 for the same game again. But the Wii U install base is so low, they could port the few deserving games to NX for $40-$50 each and sell them. And 3DS on tv could be a selling point for NX, more than Wii U games on a portable, there just aren't enough of them.
I'm guessing Pokemon amiibo - toys and cards - w/ some Pokemon NX home game offshoot. I've been waiting on Pokepark 3 for about 5 years now. Big open world thing like Free Realms or Minecraft. Pokepark 2 was good. It was probably supposed to be a Wii U game this holiday - like AC:amiibo Festival last holiday, but it's been moved to NX for next holiday.
@AlexSora89 ""Super Mario Maker For Nintendo 2DS" Problem solved.
No online support.
No 3D support.
What else? Imcompatible with Circle Pad?
I'm disappointed, but not surprised. Surely this is just a somewhat watered down port of the Wii U version, but now as I think about it, that's what Hyrule Warriors Legends is, yet that does offer 3D (on the New 3DS), it would stand to reason then that, implementing the 3D effect can't be too hard. Perhaps given the customizable nature of the game, the 3D could have unpredictable effects at a certain times. That's the only reason I could think that they'd not implement it. Still, I'm pretty disappointed, 2D side scrollers with the 3D effect can look great (see the Sega 3D classics releases of Sonic and Sonic 2), would have been neat to have that new kind of appreciation pushed onto the older Mario games.
@rushiosan Why would you want circle pad support? It's a 2D platformer, D-Pad is how you'd want to play the game anyway.
...I normally don't care about 3D, but after the conga line of disappointments we've already got, this is just a slap in the face for the heck of it.
@duffmmann Not everyone is a fan of clicky d-pads.
In December:
"Super Mario Run is fun but I want more!" No problem, buy a 3DS and play Super Mario Maker.
"Super Mario Maker on 3DS has no 3D and online sharing!" No problem, buy a Wii U for the best experience.
(Nintendo didn't named the game Mario Maker 3D, that was already a hint that it's 2D)
So it's more like "Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 2DS", right?
maybe it's time for a new Nintendo handheld the 3DS has done us well can't we just leave it at that it's hardware is starting to show its age
No 3d I can live with.
Garbage.
I hate 2D games on 3DS. I guess this game is meant for all the people that cheaped out on a 2DS and never bought a Wii U.
@rjejr
It would be the first time the numbers 3 and 2 would be flipped all over the boxart.
Bonus points for European boxarts actually having "compatible with Nintendo 2DS" to complete the joke: Nintendo 2DS on the side, and "Also compatible with Nintendo 3DS" written in small letters at the bottom right corner. Someone needs to photoshop it!
@AlexSora89 I like the "flipping the numbers" idea. If it doesn't have the 3D effect, and it doens't have amiibo support, it is a 2DS game, that is also compatible w/ 3DS.
They should have gone all out and made it a New 3DS only game, w/o 3D, then it woudln't even work on the 2DS. Oh Nintendo.
Guess i'll stick with the Wiiu version then.
@rjejr
They got away with that with Xenoblade Chronicles and with the "partially New 3DS-only" Hyrule Warriors Legends. Super Mario Maker, on the other hand, was too risky for them to basically make the game unaccessible to the vast majority of the console's userbase.
Bask in the glory of the snarkiness seen in this fan edit by NintendoEverything user Addy:
@AlexSora89 Sorry, that "Oh Nintendo" comment at the end of that sentence was supposed to be a stand in for one of these
I don't think it should have been a New 3DS game, if anything it could have said 2DS in big letters on the front to promote that system. I do like the EU box better than the US box, 2DS compatible is better than 2D screen only.
I am curious about Mario Sports Superstars now. It really looks like it should be in 3D, and if that game isn't in 3D, that's a huge waste. The horse racing is first person view.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tLeQdyUQp2Q
That mock up cover needs the amiibo logo w/ a cross out over it.
@rjejr
If it's first-person view, it will be in 3D. Not doing so would be stupid... wait, so is the American cover placing the blurb right below 3DS. Dangit.
Nintendo are crazy folks.
Nintendo Boss: Lets bring Mario maker to 3ds!
Nintendo dev: Great idea! Lets do it!
NB: Okay what would be the logical thing to do to make Mario Maker unique on 3DS?
ND: Well of course, make it 3d, Use street pass and spotpass to share levels and create a super simple wi fi service to send levels online via home or any other wi fi hot spot!
NB: Hmmmm, no
ND: ...Sir?
NB: Okay lets go ahead with the streetpass but no 3d or online. Itw too mainstream and obvious to do that.
ND: But sir-
NB: Oh and make it so you only get to play as a goomba rather than Mario.
ND: ...erm...
Okay that last part was made up but still you can imagine the think tank sessions to go like this with these people.
Not surprised to be honest, but I still feel bad for those who really wanted to enjoy this game in 3D.
@AlexSora89 "is the American cover placing the blurb right below 3DS"
I don't know for sure, I was just going off the boxart pic on the top of the page, looked like a real US cover to me. But what do I know, Nintendo has driven me nuts.
@rjejr
What do you mean? We're Nintendo fans, and that makes us nuts by default.
@AlexSora89 "DON'T MIND IF I DO!"
Yeah im calling bull if they can do a full size wii game in 3d xenoblade, they can do this totally lame
@Churchy
"AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!"
I forgot about the 3D effect... I never use it, so this doesn't bother me. I'm surprised people are. I mean, it's highly likely Nintendo's next console will ditch 3D, so people are going to have to stop pretending that it's something they care about sooner or later... (joking...!)
Lmao to anybody who bought a n3ds
@rjejr I think you're right about 3DS games being a possibility for use with the NX. I still hope, though, that if there are Wii U ports, they'd be fuller versions of games that make use of the NX features/power that the 3DS doesn't have. If there isn't an NX version of Mario Maker or this turns out to be that version, then that is quite disappointing/weird/nonsensical/nuts.
Maybe it's just a quick port done with minimal work to appeal to a larger user base. It makes sense in that light if development costs were minimal. Otherwise, this is a minimal port of a game available on a dead console to a relatively thriving but lower-powered console that is 5 years old, just before a brand new and presumably more powerful console than either of the other two consoles is released.
3DS games on NX is fine, making ports of Wii U games to 3DS and then selling them for NX is just...I can't..ugh. Sure this game will have the core experience, but it won't make optimal use of the 3DS' features, which makes it sub-par or, perhaps if we're feeling generous, a missed opportunity.
However, if it turns out that NX is a powerful handheld, then ports of Wii U games to the 3DS might be setting the scene for an NX console that provides home console experiences on a portable. I think I've twisted myself in knots. #justtellus
@DarthNocturnal I dunno why I laugh every time I see "slopes" as a must for Super Mario Maker. It just seems trivial to me.
@ThrowMeBarrel It's not nice to laugh at me Besides. I have a slick N3DS-only Majora's Mask design!
sorry but this game is bs cant search courses and you cant share levels and you can only play wii u levels now no 3d this game can burn to hell i will be enjoying my far superior wii u version
@rushiosan perhaps not, but so you honestly prefer analog control for 2D platforming? I can't be nearly as precise playing these kinds of games with a joystick or circle pad.
Makes no difference to me. I'm more than happy with the console version, and see absolutely no reason to play the handheld one. Especially since it's going to be missing a ton of features.
@BensonUii I mean you're talking about performance issues in a game that isn't even out yet, so that's all just a complete guess. As for the mystery mushroom, I have no doubt that 3DS could handle it. The 3DS handles games with features significantly more complex than a Mario mushroom and some costumes, so it seems strange to me that this theory would actually make sense to people.
In all truth, I suspect that Nintendo has chosen to leave that and some other features out of the 3DS version to avoid burning owners of the Wii U version of Mario Maker; if the Wii U version is $60 and the 3DS version is $40, they have to give the Wii U version SOME kind of advantage in features. Otherwise, if they made the two versions identical in content, people would complain about having paid $20 extra for the same exact game. So while it sucks that the 3DS version won't have the ability to upload levels, it makes sense that Nintendo wouldn't want to get more deeply invested in managing even more servers for this game. Also, I'm sure my 'Wii U as the premium version' theory applies here, too.
Server issues are a separate discussion. That doesn't reflect on 3DS' capabilities, it reflects on Nintendo's willingness to foot the bill on servers. Don't forget that Nintendo doesn't charge customers for access to online features like their competition does, and managing servers is expensive. And for a game like Mario Maker, people will undoubtedly expect those servers to stay up for a very long time, and the longer Nintendo keeps those servers up, the more it diminishes Nintendo's profit on the game.
@Sakura This is Ntineod were talking about, nothing makes sense.
I think we could still get an NX port of SMM from the Wii U, this would just be a stop gap measure until they have time to work on that, as I think Wii U and NX will have very different architecture inside meaning it will take awhile to get Wii U games running on NX. I think NX might be able to run 3DS games natively, so it's easier to just throw those carts in there and play w zero effort. Which is even less effort than this is getting.
A slight disappointment from me, but then they reminded me of the 3D used in NSMB2. So yeah, not a huge loss.
I get it. This game doesn't need 3D, and the power is better spent elsewhere.
I also SORT OF get the decision to go without online level sharing. This is about meeting up with others and actually talking about level design and sharing levels with people you know.
This means people might actually try to put a little bit of effort into making levels that are fun to play, instead of auto-levels, troll levels, or SUPER HARD OMG levels.
Meh... I never use the 3D effect (maybe I'm the only one).
I'm just hoping Nintendo ditches all the absolutely ridiculous LOCKED CONTENT nonsense.

I can't believe people actually believe that the 3ds is strong enough to run games from the wiiu when it couldn't even support the ice climbers and ect.
Anyways it's still playable, I don't care how I sound but I can't stand the fan base for the handheld, entitled, ungrateful etc you got what you asked for it's still playable and has sharing to a certain degree. If it could've ran it perfectly Nintendo would've announced it when they announced it will ith the wiiu.
If you want the features get a wiiu or pray it also comes to the nx.
@Pod I like you, you seem understanding.
@KTT ¯\(ツ)/¯
I'm skipping this port but seriously I can't imagine a 3ds owner being upset about this...its a 2d platformer. Why would you expect 3d?
Not every 3DS game needs to be 3D. I would imagine the cost and development time involved in implementing 3D to this game would be too great for Nintendo.
Lol, this just shows that Nintendo is only bringing this to the 3DS because they know people without a Wii U will buy it. They don't care to please fans and go all out with this. I mean, if they included online level sharing and course searching, I would probably get this. The lack of 3D is just icing on the cake... well, I guess the reverse of that.
I'm sure the game will still be enjoyable for those who couldn't play it or just really want this on the go, but I can't applause Nintendo for restricting features. It just shows a lack of ambition.
Guys, this game isnt for wii u owners. Wii U is done. This is for the very large 50+ million 3ds owners who don't have a Wii U. The removal sucks but what ever they had to do is what they had to do. No 3d on new 3ds systems is surprising though.
The 3D fad is over!
@Lady_rosalina The ice climbers thing never made much sense, but anyway, it really isn't important now.
Of course most people (at least the rational ones) expect a version with less features, however, you don't cut a major feature like the online options in a game that it's pretty much about sharing your levels and playing others. It's dumb no matter how you look at it. Little Big Planet for PSP (yes, for PSP, not the Vita one) ws this kind of game done right, since it was almost the PS3 version without co-op and other small features, but allowed online sharing and playing.
There's nothing to be grateful at, this is business, they do it for our money and nothing else. True, people act like spoiled brats sometimes, but demanding online in this game isn't the case in my opinion.
I actually think that the lack of online gaming is because they plan a Mario Maker for the NX as a launch title, which will be the superior experience that will allow to play it on the go, have online, have more features and better graphics. They are just selling it on 3DS because many people don't expect that and:
A) Don't have a Wii U and want the game even if it's just a poor port.
B) Want the game on the go despite having it on Wii U.
C) They are quite confident that despite people getting angry if that happens, some of them will be buying it even a third time.
That would only work if the 3DS version feels incomplete. Sure, there's no reason to hate on them, but there's no reason to applaud them either. If you feel like thanking them after spending a considerable amount of bucks in the game then great, but don't expect everyone to do it.
Update: Super Mario Maker for 3DS has removed 3DS support.
@MasterWario
Yeah, same here. Plus someone will probably say that eventually.
I enjoy the Wii u version and it's really fun, so I hope there will be better good than bad.
@AlexSora89 Ha, maybe! Personally, I've never been more disappointed by 3D in a Nintendo game; I found that the 3D detracted from the experience in this case.
@Bananaman678
I think Wii U is not over yet. Well, still at least one more Wii U games, if you count Yoka Laylee as the final games for Wii U (retail).
well thats very ironic...
anyway, first no online (i think) and then no online? nintendo, what are you doing!
No 3d, no buy. A lazy, cheap developed game doesn't deserve my money. If Nintendo doesn't care about the stereoscopic 3D effect of its stereoscopic 3D console, why should the other companies care? I haven't bought any 2d game for my Nintendo 3DS, and this one won't be the exception .
@MitchVogel
3D is a total non-issue though, as it can be turned off. Personally, I was only mildly bummed by the blurred backgrounds, but not only it started making sense to me after a while, maybe a mere few minutes into the game even, it also helped the level design itself stand out, with the game elements themselves - the HUD, Mario, the terrain, the platforms, the enemies, the blocks, the coins, the pipes - popping out. It managed to take a side-scrolling series and make it feel three-dimensional, almost real at times.
That said, as mentioned, I'm not bothered by the lack of 3D in the slightest. Although a 3D Classics version of World, Bros. and Bros. 3 would have supported this decision far better.
@rjejr From the point of view of 3DS owners with many games bought over the years, NX playing 3DS carts might entice purchase. However, I don't think Nintendo would market NX along with the Wii U ports of games to 3DS because it would be like saying, "Come play Mario Maker on our new NX! (It's the 3DS version so it's not as feature-rich as the Wii U version.)" That would be saying that the new hardware will be running games that aren't even as good as the last gen console iteration.
I have faith (just) that there is rationality behind the decision process, but it's hard to understand when not in the loop of said process. I see that in psychotic patients. A psychosis can make absolute logical sense as long as you are party to the "facts" on which it is based. Not that Nintendo is psychotic! Just that not sharing the decision-making rationale leads to confusion. You can see a similar and somewhat opposite effect in politics. Political expediency trumps facts, but many people buy into the spirit or rationale behind it so then actual truth doesn't matter.
@Slim1999 For having such a short lifespan, the Dreamcast had a lot to offer than Wii U. Fun innovative games, online gameplay, legit emulator, games with microphone support, games that almost surpass even the PC and arcade at the time, a controller with a second screen with VMU support, and data connections with the NeoGeo Pocket Color. Sure it has no DVD or WiFi at the time but the features it did had trumps all other consoles when it comes to gaming.
