Retro gaming, most notably collecting, can be an expensive business. Not all gamers are content with downloading whatever classics pop up in the Virtual Console, as there can be a desire to own the original cartridges and play them on their retro systems.
Collections can be treasured, then, but based on an eBay sale can also be used as emotional weapons. As you can see below a boxed version of the game - which would typically fetch a few hundred dollars - was sold for just $50. This, it seems, was an act of revenge following a divorce, as the text in the red box makes clear.
If you're a serious collector a prenuptial agreement with your future husband or wife may be a good idea...

Ouch. That's gotta' sting.
I'll wait till we hear both sides of the story before saying anything about this, as she could dramaqueen that actually has a good husband.
It would be funny, if the husband was the one who bought back his boxed earthbound game, and used the money he got from selling something his former wife used to have, but lost in the divorce XD HA! HA! HA! OH WOW!
Not sure picking sides is wise, we'll never know (nor should we) the details. It's just one of those crazy things spotted online!
@DarthNocturnal @Chaoz
What your saying is true, regarding two sides to every story but this is still pretty funny-morals aside
Well, I mean, it sure was a good deal...
Ouch...
As a collector myself, this would be the most horrible, evil and cold hearted thing that could happen to me, so yeah, well done I guess.
Well speaking of expensive things being sold for cheaper then there value. I bought a Gameboy Player and its startup disc for only $13. The disc alone is sold for a much greater price then that... The seller would've had to have known about the startup disc is value.
RIP ex-husband. Your collection will miss you
RIP punctuation.
Ha nice, not gonna take sides but this is kinda funny of all the things to get in a divorce.
Damn...
That's something I'll never understand in divorce cases: How come she got his game collection? Who in his right mind would take something as personal as that away from somebody during a divorce, especially if those games were owned before the couple even got together?
Better not get married if that is the rule and not the exception...
@Lycidas
In some places common la is must as strict.
@Spacey
Really? I still have my player and the disc in it's container with the cardboard cover in my lap right now. I would never sell it though, hell I still have an Atari 2600 around somewhere.
My word, she sounds like a catch! Losing my boxed copy of Earthbound seems to me like a SMALL price to pay for being divorced from her.
Bad wife. Good that he got rid of her.
Watch the language please — TBD
@DarthNocturnal
True, but ist it lawful? I mean, it these games where his before the relationship, how come she could even lay her fingers on them? Reminds me a bit of Alan in taahm, who lost everything.
A great game caught in a bad situation.
...did he have a copy of chibi robo for the GC that she'd like to offload for the cheap?
@Lycidas She says she "got them in the divorce".
Now why would she get these in the divorce?
People can barter for things in divorces, ie I have this if you have that. So clearly, it didn't mean that much to him otherwise he would have got them himself.
@ThomasBW84 Agreed. That's how this kind of thing should be seen, rather than pointlessly speculating about who's wrong or who deserves what.
What a cruel move, but she could do better; she should've sold it for a buck!
I'm not going to "pick sides", but have to say that this woman certainly isn't handling adversity with dignity and maturity. That's kind of a pretty big pointer as to the kind of person she is, irregardless of what her husband was like. Anyway, $50 for a game that is usually a few hundred seems like good enough karma for this incident.
Regardless of who was in the right or wrong in the divorce, doing this sort of thing is pretty evil and conniving.
I feel like there is no winners in this process except maybe the person that takes advantage of a sad situation.
Gonna agree with @ThomasBW84, we don't know the details and there is no reason to pick sides. Sucks for the guy who had the game, though. Like one of my old bosses once said, "I always buy furniture from a woman going through a divorce, you'll never get the stuff cheaper because women are evil!" That last bit was funny to me, even if I disagree with it.
If I had known I would have tried to buy it so I could have given it back to the guy. Not a nice thing to do, ma'am.
@ottospooky I couldn't agree more. I had a wife do this same thing to me for dozens of books valued at thousands of dollars, just to insure I never benefited from the sale myself. There's a place in hell reserved for this special kind of wicked person. As the country song said.. "She got the Gold Mine and I got the shaft.." Any readers doubting this is possible, guess again Bad things do happen to good people too.
What a vindictive... Sorry, for what ages is this site? Well, what a vindictive b****. I don't know the circumstances behind the divorce, but judging from the way she wrote that description I get the feeling she was at fault. I can't say for certain, but if this is one's reaction to the actual divorce at hand, I can see why the divorce happened in the first place. This scheit is why I'm avoiding marriage like the plague.
So why would his ex-husband be pissed? She could have just smashed it and posted on her Facebook if she wanted him pissed.
@DarthNocturnal ...and when you presume you make a pres out of u and me!
@LinkSword Isn't pointless speculation what we usually do on here?
Man that's awful. Hope 4chan doesn't see the post or she's gonna get it like that mom who just tried to punish her kids by selling their beyblades lol.
Wow, how can someone be so evil and do that just to hurt somebody... not nice. I know we don't know the details but if a person is acting so evil I'd assume they deserved it to get dumped/divorced. Also for writing "then" instead of "than".
No matter how badly someone hurts you, it's in this situations where it shows whether you're a good person or not... a good person would never take revenge like that, no matter what the other person did.
You would have thought the guy would make sure to take his beloved games, if what she says is true.
Could be a case where the guy was kicked out of the house and not allowed all of his possessions back. This has happened to my sister twice in two separate break-ups, one of which was a marriage. If that is the case, it shows what a childish pathetic person she is.
Salty over a divorce or not, this woman is stupid.
She could have gotten $250 easy. Why would you sell Earthbound cheap for ANY reason? Very idiotic. He clearly didn't marry her for her brains to begin with. I can see why he valued video games over her. Earthbound is worth more than her, any day.
That's so lame. It's one thing to sell people's stuff off like that, and another to brag about it on the listing itself! What a jerk.
@Chaoz
Wise call and in all earnest, rarely one is the sole cause of this, more often it is a back and forth that escalates.
@night
In all fairness, intellect takes a back seat in the matters of the heart. I've seen ivy leaguers reduced to incoherent piles of piss and rage in big emotional situations. It's why most advise people to never make big decisions under any emotional stress, positive or negative.
I mean, this is petty, but really, I've heard a lot worse over the years on the internet that this is tame in comparison. At least this is something that can be fixed by spending more money in order to get another one.
I've heard about legal battles with divorcees about custody over pets only for the winning party to turn around and euthanize them just to hurt the other party. Now that's truly evil stuff and I think that's the sort of thing that should carry heavy legal repercussions.
I admire her for not listing the game at it's typical price and giving up the extra money, and I'm sure the buyer is screaming her praises for her generosity. The seller isn't evil, just acting out of spite, we've all done that when someone pisses us off really bad.
Men get screwed over in divorces more often than not but he could have easily gotten this game back.
This hit a fun nerve for me.
This. Is. HILARIOUS!
Shrew. No wonder he loved the games more than her.
The lesson here: never marry.
If you feel you must, then be sure to get a pre-nup first.
People suck.
Poor guy...
All I can say is: he kinda had it coming - he did marry her in the first place. Chances are he knew about this side of her long ago. He probably just assumed she'd never aim that spite at him.
I have a hard time thinking this is real. Could be the price it sold for, the profile history of the user, the stock photo (at least a pic with a middle finger up with the game), or even going through the whole trouble of setting up a listing on eBay for revenge to make it public.
I mean it would of been easier posting a video on Youtube or Facebook of it getting smash by a rock, that way it really would be Earth Bound (rimshot).
If this husband, as claimed, loved his games more than the ex-wife, then selling of his collection in an act of petty revenge makes the ex-wife out to be even worse.
Revenge is a negative emotion, which makes this woman is a negative person and puts her in a negative llight. Poor bloke.
How mature...not. sigh!
This isn't news worthy.
I forget how young many here are. And masculine. Judgements being made, blame placed and we know nothing about these people and their relationship other than this auction. Judgements about her due to what are probably typos when posting under stress.
Hearts get broken and we, as a species, rarely rise above the muck. Life gets messy and ugly sometimes. There is most likely more than enough blame for them to share.
Everyone is missing the true monster in all of this. Whoever saw this and sent it in to NL waited more than 2 weeks to see if she had anything else good before alerting the rest of the world. Not saying I wouldn't have done the same though.
Haha it sold from Palmerton, PA that's like 15 mins from where I live
Not exactly creative. I personally would have traded the whole collection to EB Games for instant cash (not store credit) for their usual wonderful trade in prices. Then I would have posted the husband the receipt. THAT would have made him cry.
This all seems really petty
Sounds like a scam...
@k8sMum
"my husband loved these games more then me so so i got them in the divorce so i am selling cheap just to piss him off" is one heck of a typo!
Good thing he divorced her. She's clearly a complete moron.
@technotreegrass nope I prefer to be the better person and not try to sate my hatred with evil that only feeds the beast inside...
This is just a low blow, kicking someone when he's down. Regardless of the back story it's just evil.
Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.
UNTAMED HORSES.........
Also My Nesssss noooooeesss!!!! ( lol for an long time.
These jokes can go and on forever. There are tons of bass-holes, low-lives, cheap men WHO ARE UNGREATEFUL FOR THE BOUNTY THEY HAVE out there, I will agree. However there is bad-stock, garbage women who are above there expiration date ( spinster/finsters in make-up packaging )and still flash there cash as well. UNGREATFUL..
I know tons of men with nice tight beautiful girlfriends but they treat them like dirt. I understand that people do have there relationships. I understand that women enjoy the dirt treatment,
SERIOUSLY WHEN YOU MARRY AN EDUCATED WOMAN WHAT DO YOU EXPECT TO HAPPEN TO YOUR STUFF.
Then there are people with imbalanced chemicals, and mental issues. This guy mother in Michigan broke up her boyfriends car when she found out he was cheating on her. She smashed, smashed, smashed that thing. They are still together and all but that just shows these women needs to be tamed. I mean that in the legal way and all.
This guy should have found an trustful buddy and pay that fellow to hang on to his stuff.
It is like watching an episode of married with children with these couples.
OMGittyAunt.........................ha ha too bad soo sad. Please let this guy be an forum user I ran into.
I hope it is not WeaponX or CheapyD. It would be so messed up if it was WeaponX ( if anybody remembers him ). CheapyD could always run back the US when there are problems but WeaponX is anchored from my understanding.
My Nesssss nooooeeeesss..
collectors are so silly
Sounds like a real beach and a freaking idiot honestly. I don't care how mad I am, if I'm going to do something that spiteful, I'm going to make sure I benefit from it to the fullest instead of just tossing away hundreds (or even thousands) of dollars.
Judging on the fact that she typed like a twelve year old from tumblr. This may be the best thing that ever happened to him.
Unless he cheated or something, which would be worthy of revenge like this, it sounds like she was the real problem in the marriage. She's clearly a very spiteful, jealous person. We'll never know what actually went on in their marriage, but her actions represent her, and they don't make her look good.
And what judge in his right mind awarded her the husband's games anyway? How does that make any sense?
I had a friend who parents got divorced and his mom sold his dad's $65,000 boat for a $1000 and sold his 1967 Corvette for $500.
Doesn't surprise me, actually. I lived in PA for a long time; there's nothing but bitter and miserable people there. They're honestly the lowest form of life on the planet.
I'm no legal expert, but in my country at least, it is easy to understand how she could obtain these items from a divorce. Marriage involves both parties merging there assets together, and divorce requires splitting them fairly evenly (in terms of monetary value, not personal value). It is irrelevant who had what before the relationship began. If the wife didn't bring a lot of assets into the marriage, it only makes sense that she would leave it with some of his stuff.
I lost a box full of NES carts thanks to a similar situation. All my faves too, both Zelda games, Ducktakes, Castlevania 3, Mega Man 4, etc. I was fuming at the time, but life goes on & I've since realised its not worth getting worked up over. Its only videogames, not worth losing your sanity over.
Down with this sort of thing!
@MadAdam81
Or they can just delay the process with arguing. We have prenup for a reasons even young and not wealthy Every couple should have one, even it sounds silly when you are oh so in love and not going to divorce ever.
But man, even as revenge, wouldn't sell that cheap
And yes, as a teenager I had bf who loved his pc more than me and when it ended (nicely after all) I just "forgot" to return his FFVII and FFVIII plus a few other games 0
When people have worked hard for something and it's used as bait in devorce settlements, things like this happen. And people wonder why marriages are in decline.
Wow, what a malicious and incredibly stupid thing to do.
Try and find this on Ebay, I can't, using the June 21st sold date.
Sorry, 24th June.
Can't really judge this since we aren't getting both sides of the story, but it sucks losing an item you care deeply about. This is just another reason to not get married unless you are completely certain that you have found the right person, and even if you do, this could still happen. Sucks for the collector!
@CrazyOtto
Someone getting a SNES cartridge at a super low price on EBAY for a wacky reason isn't newsworthy under the weirdness headline on a website called Nintendolife that does retro reviews and has even done articles on retro videogame collections?
@AmericanCrusade @Ralizah no, no, no.... If you are going to marry, then choose wisely. Don't just hook up with the first beautiful jackass you see! Maybe people should spend more than a year or so getting to REALLY know each other... Or, ugh, Too many things to mention that people can do to avoid situations such as these. and no, I am actually quite happy in my relationship
@greengecko007 don't forget, in many areas, longevity is also a factor. For example, in California, after 10 years, regardless (irregardless is not a real word) of who had what when it all started... You split EVERYTHING in half. Some food for thought when considering marriage
I think it's a made up story, or it's from a story from years ago that's been doctored. It sounds familiar anyway. That completed item is not on Ebay.
I feel the purpose of this article is to never get married.
"Retro" game prices are absolutely ridiculous. I purchased a battered cart of Ninja Warriors for snes (a very badass game) for around $40 on ebay like, 5 years ago, & i check now, & there are no "well used" copies seling for any less than $150.
How the hell did this happen?!
I wouldn't do haven't done something like that even to someone I've hated. There's just a point where causing pain doesn't help anyone.
@Vineleaf I agree. I wouldn't have done this to my worst enemy.
I'm laughing my ass off because I actually see her point. He should value his own wife enough to not lose her and not, at least according to her, treasure his video game collection instead. Of course, he said, she said, and all that. Maybe he's not the bad guy at all but she sounds especially vindictive here for it to be unjustified. I'm pretty upset reading the hate expressed towards her in such an immature way by the commenters, though. Those are her games now...and besides, at least she isn't burning them, people.
@Platypus101
Not sure what that bit about irregardless not being a word was about... but anyways, you are completely right. I can only assume that some of the other good visitors of Nintendolife are not aware of the all the various legal aspects of marriage, and are maybe just more familiar with its more religious background.
Dah, just more proof that marriage is a bad idea. Also, that lady has guts!
Poor guy; that was very childish of her.
How petty.
Hopefully, she uses the money to learn how to write out a sentence properly.
@bezerker99
just as we talked about around a year ago. ha
@ogo79 i know, right? now that IS weird!
My (internet) friend would love to insult this person's grammar.
@Lycidas she probably actually paid for it? Or maybe it was in the house and sometimes you can get the house and all stuff inside unless you.could.prove you.bought it blah blah. All I have to say is he dunn effed up leaving his games behind.
She does realize he could just register a new user and buy them back, right?
Still a lot better than burning everything from rage. Some lucky ones there.
I really hope that a big EarthBound fan that's never actually been able to own the game got to get it for that price and not someone who's just going to resell it.
Kinda sad that she's basically admitting that she can't compete with 32bit video games lol.
She'll feel bad about it, in time, if she truly has a heart. Can't blame someone for making rash, spiteful decisions in such a situation, especially when we don't know the full story. Not that we should be acting like the moral superiority police in the first place...
Well, I'm sure he was pissed losing it in the settlement anyways. She's the one losing out on 400 bucks or so. At least the husband can have some piece of mind knowing the game is likely with someone who does love the game.
This is a pretty common troll tactic... list copies on ebay, kijiji, wherever, at rock bottom prices with weird explanations to piss off the collectors/hoarders.
Jokes on her. She coulda gotten a lot more money for it.
LOL! When I filed for divorce I told my ex she could take whatever she wanted. She took everything that wasn't nailed down(even my curtains). I can laugh about it now as it's been like 12 years and I'm happily re-married for 6 of those years, but rejection makes normal people do really spiteful things.
What a dunce. She already hurt her husband by stealing his games out of spite.
Selling them for cheap only hurts her, financially, which I'm sure her husband had a good laugh over, since he was never going to get the games back anyway.
Again, what a dunce.
