Nintendo Direct Confirmed For 17th May, Covering Summer Titles on Wii U and 3DS

Posted by Thomas Whitehead

Set hype mode to stunned

Nintendo likes to keep us on our toes, as it's just announced that there'll be a Nintendo Direct broadcast on 17th May, giving us the usual 24 hours of notice. In both North America and Europe it'll cover Spring and Summer releases, with Nintendo UK emphasizing a "focus" on Wii U games, and Nintendo of America promising updates on upcoming releases on both Wii U and 3DS.

As for the all-important times, it'll all be happening at 3pm UK time / 4pm European time / 10am Eastern and 7am Pacific.

Of particular interest is confirmation — from Nintendo of Europe — that there'll be a Nintendo Direct focused on Wii U titles due "this Autumn and beyond...around E3 time in June"; Nintendo of America promises a similar broadcast "before the start of E3 2013". That's the first official acknowledgement that we'll have something to look forward to around the time of the world-famous expo.

So what will be revealed tomorrow? We suspect that, as the focus is on the Summer period, it'll all be about release dates. Perhaps if we're lucky undated titles like The Wonderful 101 and Wii Fit U will be pinned down, but we'll just have to wait and see.

As always, you'll be able to watch and see it all happen right here on Nintendo Life, along with our live text mutterings, before we dive into reporting every little reveal from the broadcasts. While we look forward to that, let's speculate wildly on what will happen in the comments below.

"Another showing of new luigi bros! Sadly no pikmin date yet. But myamoto appears alongside iwata with a green hat and performs a plumber jump!"

edit: also, guitar cover of an animal crossing song. No game to announce.

The US Nintendo Direct site confirms we'll have a similar second Direct to yours in Europe.

A Nintendo Direct this early just to show off Summer 2013 titles for Wii U and 3DS ? :/ I hate to be an idiot of a downer here, but isn't this a little too early when they can just wait until around in the time frame of E3 2013 to show these off in a Nintendo Direct then?

Hunter-D said:

Nintendo Directs are for the upcoming games. Release dates, promotional offers and more new info on what we already know.

E3 is the main course. Although, that doesn't mean we can't have a few surprises related to the upcoming titles.

QBertFarnsworth said:

It's timed to beat the May 21st XBOX reveal to the punch. It's their way of saying, sure, there are no games now, but we will have a ton of games coming out when new XBOX and PS4 owners are complaining that they have no games for their new consoles.

DarkNinja9 said:

hope its about release dates already come on!! im curious on the luigi DLC and the wonderful 101 release D= my body is reggie ~ boards hype train~

Pokefanmum82 said:

i just hope we get a release date for the Mario golf game and some release dates for the Wii U owners who don't have games that they want yet.

BraveBold5 said:

3pm Uk time / 4pm europe time
3pm Portugal time too and in some parts of Portugal it will be at 2pm time

GN004Nadleeh said:

the are going to show some games or just talk about them and then let us know we wont be playing them any time soon and also that Nintendo knows whats best, not the cutsomers

ICHIkatakuri said:

Damn it I'm going scuba diving tomorrow, and will be up to 30m down at the bottom of a flooded quarry when they broadcast!
Metroid Metroid Metroid Metroid Metroid! Big N don't let me down now.

Dpullam said:

I'm eager to hear more about the upcoming Wii U and 3DS titles coming this summer! Perhaps there might be a surprise or two as well! I love Nintendo Directs!

Peach64 said:

Hoping for some new game announcements but they're probably saving those for around E3 time.

WiiLovePeace said:

I'm just going to look forward to some laughs & keep my expectations low so I can more greatly enjoy any announcements they make, if any... I always hope to see Iwata holding fruit again though

Kifa said:

I'll keep my guard up an remain sceptical. WiiU has disappointed me so far, mainly because of no apparent interest from Nintendo to breathe some life in the system. And as I've already stated many times - mobile conversions do not solve the problem for me. If I wanted to play those, I'd use my tablet... They better give us something tomorrow... ;/

RedYoshi999 said:

Nintendo does always seem to manage pulling off some amazing amounts of hype with these broadcasts (just look at how amazing the last Direct was) so I'm fairly confident they won't disappoint this time. However, I'm not too sure what they will actually announce. There's not too many games awaiting release dates and I don't see too many new announcements incoming with E3 a month away. I guess they will just have to surprise me (again!)

Ryno said:

Not expecting to many OMG moments for the upcoming one; it's the June one I am really looking forward to.

FullbringIchigo said:

does this mean i might actually have a Wii U game to play on my Wii U soon? (i'm only using it for Wii games at the moment and before anyone says anything my Wii stopped reading discs so i decided to get a Wii U to replace it so i was ready for future Nintendo games)

paburrows said:

I am really hoping they do for 3DS like last summer where they release a new good game every week all summer.

Jaymo187 said:

This is a great way to treat the ever-faithful Nintendo fans - Spring new info on us that abruptly that rocks our world.

Ras said:

There's 104 days of summer vacation, and Nintendo comes along just to fill them!

I'd rather they just wait until they can lay out the E3 fun, but maybe there'll be some surprises.

RevolverLink said:

I'm not expecting much in the way of announcements for this ND, but it'll still be nice to get a little more info on Animal Crossing, Mario & Luigi and SMT IV.

DerpSandwich said:

"Perhaps [if Nintendo has a shred of decency or business smarts in them] undated titles like The Wonderful 101 and Wii Fit U will be pinned down..."

citizenerased said:

Summer titles only. So, no game announcements. Will be good to see more of Wonderful 101, Mario & Luigi and Pikmin 3, for sure!

Prof_Elvin_Gadd said:

Rule # 1: Phasers on stun.

Looks like us CT people will have to wake up around 8:30am to prepare ourselves for the 9am start!

@Wilford111 Hooray!... I mean, awwww

Rei7 said:

Hoping they will announce something new for the Wii U. Like seriously after i'm done with MH3U and the soon to come Wind Maker HD, I might just sell it off. Though i'll keep mine if there is a new Smash Bros. Mario Kart, Mario Galaxy game on the Wii U would be awesome as well.

Linkmaster9 said:

I would like for them to announce realease dates for stuff like w101 of bayonetta 2 Im not expecting anything new until the june direct.

Ryno said:

@Rei7: Selling your Wii U makes no sense. Do you like Nintendo games? The Wii U is just getting started.

@Jese_1: Yeah, possibly. I am not interested in "Yarn" games.

sonicfan1373 said:

This is good. I do not think we will likely see the next 3D Mario game, Mario Kart, or other games coming in Fall (we will most likely see those in June's Nintendo Direct, although they might hint at it and tease these titles a bit in tomorrow's Nintendo Direct), but I think that we will get a glimpse at Pikmin 3, New Super Luigi U, Game & Wario, Pokemon Rumble, Resident Evil Revelations HD, Splinter Cell, Rayman Legends, more VC titles, and maybe even a glimpse at the Wii U summer update.

seronja said:

i want to know more about pikmin 3, wonderful 101 & most importantly ( the reason i even got a wii u ) any sort of info about bayonetta 2! also any info about zelda WW HD and zelda lttp 2 would be welcome too

OorWullie said:

I'm going to predict other than more info on the obvious, actual gameplay footage of Yarn Yoshi,Bayonetta 2 and WW,then right at the end a sneak peek of Mario Kart.I'm sure they'll leave 3D Mario till next month.

SchamMan89 said:

Didn't Nintendo mention in the January Direct they're releasing Wii Party U for a summer release? Did I hallucinate?

I predict we'll see Wii Fit U, Wii Party U, Wonderful 101, Pikmin 3 and some digital release.

NintyMan said:

I'll see if I can keep my expectations under control once again. Mainly I would be pleased if this covered release dates for New Super Luigi U and Mario Golf: World Tour, but of course new gameplay footage or even yet another new game reveal would be welcome.

Before I had a feeling that they would hold a Direct at some point this May, so now that it's the middle of the month they'll be doing it. Bring on the good news!

tsm7 said:

Maybe a Deus Ex release date too? Square-Enix got awfully quiet...

bizcuthammer said:

I'm guessing this one is just gonna be about release dates and new info on previously announced games like Mario Golf: World Tour, The Wonderful 101, Wii Fit U, Pikmin 3, etc. I wouldnt expect any new reveals with the upcoming E3 Directs in about 2-3 weeks. Still, i really hope W101 gets a release date and that we see a sweet new trailer for pikmin 3!

Varia01 said:

Hopefully they'll surprise us with an unexpected Metroid game. It has been almost three years since other m. Other titles are great too, but there's never a Metroid! The only thing that could make this upcoming episode more anticipating is a Wii U Metroid game.

Rei7 said:

@Ryno There isn't much to look forward too. I'm keeping it and hopefully by next year we got all the games we wanted. I'm still thinking it has potential, I like Nintendo games btw. I have 11 3DS games and I love them all and bought every single Mario, Luigi and Zelda. It's just that there isn't much stuff on Wii U..... and Nintendo isn't announcing anything.... which is kinda sad..

AJWolfTill said:

If there are any new announcements I imagine they will be regarding 3rd party software. Stuff like Metroid will surely be saved for the e3 one.

Pj1 said:

Super Mario All Stars in lush galaxy style graphics I'm hoping for!

Oh & for the Donkey Kong Country titles to be re-released on VC!

MeloMan said:

Ah E3... the season where the fans and trollers collide to rejoice and complain. Time to put in the earplugs as I board the hype train

kaptenSwe said:

super mario 3d land 2, please! with many levels and a online function! That should be my dream!!

Rapadash6 said:

I know a lot of people are going crazy waiting for Pikmin 3 and The Wonderful 101, but those types of games have never appealed to me. Hopefully Nintendo has a summer surprise up its sleeve for Wii U, or at least give us a glimpse of the summer schedule for Virtual Console titles (including some never before released games like Yoshi's Island). Otherwise this is just a stopgap direct for me until the real meat and potatos is served up in June.

Skeet102 said:

I expect this to be mainly wiiu and a little bit of Mario and luigi. I expect no more pokemon news for a while.

Rezalack said:

Very good news, I like how they announce it the day before. Adds to the surprise.

Kicked2TheKirb said:

I hope they announce some release dates. I'm really excited for the new 3D Mario Game. also hope they're working on a new Metroid game.

Shining-Void said:

I just want a video of the wind waker. I want to see how it looks when it moves. Besides that some X news would be greatly appreciated .

sethlaw225 said:

some gameplay of xenogear game, smash bros announcement, 3D mario game, mario kart, wonderful 101, wind waker hd..huh can't wait !!

warlordovblood said:

So hyped!! C'mon nintendo don't let us down, at least a release date for wonderful 101 and pikmin 3. Maybe some footage or an actual trailer of smt X Fire emblem? drools

Urbanhispanic said:

If anyone THINKS of selling their Wii U BEFORE the Nintendo Direct broadcast, let me know because I still don't have one.

Urbanhispanic said:

Also, I will miss the live broadcast since I'll be at work so i'll have to wait until tomorrow afternoon to see it. C'mon, Nintendo....drop some awesome bombs on us!!!

aaronsullivan said:

It's going to be stuff we've already seen and, at best, a tiny teaser of what we'll see in June. Either way, I'm looking forward to it.

ultraraichu said:

A Nintendo Direct that on a day I don't have to work or go to school and short notice. Awesome, tuning on my Wii U at 9:55am for this.

GamerZack87 said:

What no 3DS news for Europe just Wii U that sucks I'm never buying Nintendo again blah blah ragequit blah...yeah, I can't honestly complain about Nintendo.

I hope Nintendo eventually reveals plans for a more comfortable GamePad. The only reason I don't currently have a Wii U (apart from the system software glitches) is the discomfort caused by the GamePad. Make it better and it's an insta-buy for me!

Tra_Venous said:

Nintendo confirmed there'll be at least one more Nintendo Direct, just before E3 (that's gonna be the big one, ladies and gents) this one is going to cover the summer lineup for all things WiiU - come on, Deus Ex release date!

Jeremyx7 said:

F-ZERO!!!! NEW MONOLITH GAME!!!!! WONDERFUL 101!!! SMASH BROS. INFO!!! 3DS/WiiU ZELDA GAMES!!!!! DEUS EX INFO!!!!!!!.................and.....more! Hopefully ._.

Gallimastro said:

I may not own a Nintendo console, so I consider myself at least a supporter in faith... but at least ONE killer app. Heck, a new Smash Bros would blow my mind right about now. That seems to be the only game to ever get me to buy a Nintendo console.

I just have this feeling it's going to be a letdown.

XCWarrior said:

Here's what I want, but I know it isn't going to happen:

They announce Nintendo All-Stars Football for North America. It will have more than 100 characters from many of Nintendo's franchises. It can get super arcadey, ala NFL Blitz but with Mario Strikers power ups, or it can go simulation - to fill the void of no Madden. And make sure to bring up EA, and mention that is game will have FREE DLC, and not nickel and dime you to death.

Or Star Fox. That would be swell. But we better get 5 games for the summer retail wise, and 2 or 3 for the eshop. We need games Nintendo. ASAP.

stefenjc said:

YAY! More Nintendo Direct! Hope there's a lot of games to be shown!
Lots of Wii U news, Sadly I dont have a Wii U ... But Will soon buy it!

Nono18 said:

I'm always juiced for Nintendo Directs! I am keeping my expectations low with known titles getting solid release dates, with the pre-e3 ND bringing out the big guns. I do hope they throw us a new game announcement at the end to combat the xbox reveal next week.

RetroGBHippie92 said:

I'm always excited for Nintendo Directs, but isn't E3 next month? I thought they were going to do them around E3, it seems a little premature if you ask me. But then again, the Wii U is in need of rescuing, lets hope that Nintendo at least makes Earthbound available on the Virtual Console either after these Nintendo Directs, or during E3.

andrea987 said:

UK focusing on the U, eh? It's all good for U owners and/or Nintendo fan, but I hope they'll start advertising massively on tv and newspapers. That's the only way to draw in more people.

JaxonH said:

I'm somewhat excited for Yarn Yoshi. The game looks PHENOMENAL, but my one concern is pillow-fight difficulty. That's what took the "epic" out of Kirby's Epic Yarn. A stoned monkey could have beaten that game. If they were to implement difficulty settings, the problem might be addressed. Not typical though for that kind of game, so I'm not getting my hopes up.

Ichiban said:

Anything on SMT X Fire Emblem would be awesome. Ditto Yoshi Yarn and Monoliths X. But id love to see some Bayonetta 2 gameplay. Oh and release dates too!

GiftedGimp said:

Hoping to hear plenty of good things, especially want to see if there is any credibility to these rumours from someone who supposedly works at Nintendo, and Who has been right in the Past, and according to some of the comments, is quite a reliable source of leaked info.
Just take the info with a pinch of salt for now though.

Kirk said:

I'm really not excited by the prospect of seeing the likes of The Wonderful 101 again or Wii U Fit.

I hope Nintendo has far more exciting stuff to show us than an update of a Wii fitness game and a obscure quirky third party game that I'm really not that interested in or excited by...

baba_944 said:

how can I lower the quality settings? I'm going to watch it after school so I'm really curious about it as every time I watch it it's choppy.

MrMario02 said:

Please have:
1. Animal Crossing: new leaf
2. F-Zero 3DS
3. Metroid 3DS
4. M&L dream team
5. Mario Golf World tour
6. .....

*NOTE:Think of something for #6

JulienIsTheMan said:

I'm gonna watch this in computer class, or at least the first half of it, because the class goes until about 10:15. SUCK IT MR.BALLARD!!! Personally, I'm not expecting much from this direct, but we should have a bit of excitement.

XCWarrior said:

@LzQuacker Why thank you. I think sports fans and Nintendo gamers would play it considering the popularity of American football.

@Forbsz They will make a page/story for the live stream.

@Kirk Ah, the classic, "If the game I want isn't shown, the whole Nintendo Direct stinks." Well the Nintendo games will appeal to the masses. And new games will be shown. Might be eshop games, but we will get surprise summer releases. Bank on it.

shake_zula said:

My prediction for Wii U stuff: Release dates for Pikmin 3 and TW101; more footage of Bayonetta 2 but no release date; lots of footage of Windwaker HD with a Holidays 2013 release date; references to Mario Kart, new Zelda and Smash Bros, but no details about any of them; lots of talk about features and updates that aren't gaming-related; and absolutely no mention of the Xenoblade game or the FE/SMT crossover.
