Mario Golf. Mario Tennis, Mario Strikers. When people talk about Mario sports games, these are the ones that are most commonly brought up. But we're here to change that.
Today, over on our YouTube channel, the lovely Felix is celebrating one of the most underappreciated Mario sports games: Mario Hoops 3-on-3, known as Mario Slam Basketball in Europe.
Developed by Square Enix and released on the DS in 2006 (and 2007 in Europe), 3-on-3 utilises traditional basketball rules with a Nintendo twist. Being a DS game, you control your characters using the d-pad but every other action on the court uses the touch screen. You can play with friends in local wireless or enter a single-player Tourney with a team of three characters in order to unlock more. While the game may have been light on content — and there's a lack of online multiplayer — the core gameplay was hugely addictive and, like other Mario sports games, all of the characters and menus are bursting with personality.
If you were good enough at shooting hoops, you might have even unlocked a few Final Fantasy characters, too. Yep, that's right — Cactuar, Moogle, Ninja, Black Mage, and White Mage are all playable characters in Mario Hoops 3-on-3, so not technically characters, but a mix of interpretations of jobs and series mascots. It's a really unusual, unexpected blend of characters and IPs, but it works really well to make such a unique title on the DS.
Check out Felix's thoughts in the video above, and let us know whether you've played this — on DS or on the Wii U's Virtual Console — in the comments.

Great game, one of my favorite basketball games period. Top ten best graphics on the DS. I made a special thumb stylus just for playing this game (and Kid Icarus). Running Luigi is cheating.
Fun fact, the conposer for this game also made music for FF14.
Mario out there on streets of Brooklyn representin.
I know it’s a bit less-loved but I really enjoyed Sports Mix on the Wii. Pretty underrated if you ask me, it’s definitely not the best Mario sports game but I had a lot of fun with it when I was younger. Basketball and Dodgeball in particular were a lot of fun. The story mode was also really addicting to play through
@StarPoint Mario Sports Mix definitely deserves another chance. Hockey and Dodgeball alone were worth it.
Not to mention, it was, to a certain extent, the first crossover between Mario, Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest at the same time, way before Smash Bros. Ultimate. The idea of Mario, Ninja and Slime using sports techniques to defeat a Behemoth from Final Fantasy definitely deserves some attention.
As for Mario Hoops 3-on-3, I have a legit question: were there other basketball games on the DS?
I'm glad this is on both, my DS and Wii U Virtual Console collections. Seeing the Mario characters ballin' with the Final Fantasy characters is a sight to behold as much as it is to see Mario with NBA players in NBA Street V3.
I LOLed at the "reversed triangle" mentioning at the Youtube video @ 2:10
There are mainly two things I remember about this game. The iconic music and the final level at the airship which was incredibly difficult for me.
I loved playing this so much on my DSLite.
@Justaguest I know it's a hassle, but you could restart the second half of the game as much as you wanted as long as the game hadn't finished. You just needed to make sure you won the first half to have the advantage.
@HammerGalladeBro Thanks! I need to remember that for whenever I decide to tackle my DS backlog.
Ah that’s a really good game… I still have it actually.
Fun game. Awesome court designs. Controls could have been better. Really hard game from what I remember
@JR150 Masayoshi Soken is a legend.
Man, if I knew these had Final Fantasy characters I would have given these games a closer look.
It had Moogles and they make it the best Mario video game by default.
@HammerGalladeBro I know the answer to your question definitively because I have played every single basketball game for handheld consoles (not including steamdeck and switch). There is one other basketball game on ds, backyard basketball, which is almost unplayable imo. In fact Nintendo handhelds have gotten the shaft basketball wise except for this one exclusive, and nba 3-on-3 featuring kobe bryant for gbc (also playable on dmg). 3ds and Vita also both had no basketball games except top trumps and one japan only rpg. The best gba exclusive basketball is Disney, but that was just OK, nice complex controls though. Psp was full of them but none came close to Mario hoops. And no other games took significant use of motion or touch control than it either. Sports mix is decent but doesn't have the same feel.
Edit: I said none on psp came close, but Street Showdown is really good, just all the lives, 2ks, and NBA's weren't great.
The character select menu music alone puts Mario Hoops 3-on-3 in the discussion for best Mario Sports game.
Been saying this for a while. It’s due time for new Mario 3-On-3 Hoops and Mario Sluggers games please.
But also in addition to those it’s time for Mario to branch out to other athletics as fully fleshed out standalone arcade sports games i.e. Hockey, American Football, Rugby, Weightlifting/Strongman Competitions, Skateboarding/BMX, Rollerblading/Figure Skating, Dodgeball, Volleyball and/or Seepak Tekraw etc. (I understand some of these have been mini-games already in other titles).
Sidebar: I love when Nintendo & Square work together to bring titles to life. Would also be nice to get a new Fortune Street as well.
… Wun can only hope.
Would love to see a sequel to this game easily one of my favorite mario sports game.
I miss this game, underrated gem of a Mario sport game.
You could absolutely make a sequel to this gem by putting some of the touch screen motions on the second joy stick.
Used to play this a lot as a kid. It's actually my first mario sports game (if we're not counting the mario & sonic games). This game's ost is also seriously underrated.
I meant to comment on this earlier. Good article and video - enjoyed it!
