The latest Japanese boxed charts are here (albeit slightly late this week) and there's no change for the top two spots, with Pokémon Scarlet and Violet and Splatoon 3 sitting comfortably in their usual positions. Scarlet and Violet are very close to crossing the 4 million sales mark, and we wouldn't be surprised if it hasn't already achieved such a milestone by the time you're reading this.
Crisis Core - Final Fantasy VII - Reunion made its debut, coming in at number three, four, and five for the PS5, PS4, and Switch versions respectively. Adding up sales across all three platforms, the game managed a total of 156,530 units sold, which is genuinely fantastic for a spin-off title.
Elsewhere, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is closing in on 5 millions units sold with a current total of 4,972,488, and Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope is hanging in there at number ten on the charts, selling 15,060 units this week to make up an ongoing total of 46,173.
Here are the week's charts in full:
- [NSW] Pokemon Scarlet / Pokemon Violet (The Pokemon Company, 11/18/22) – 260,784 (3,963,266)

- [NSW] Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope (Nintendo, 09/09/22) – 15,060 (46,173)
Hardware sales for this week show no major surprises in regards to the Switch, but the PS5 has seen a significant boost in sales to come in at number two. Spare a thought for the Xbox Series X, too, which came in at number ten this week, selling a rather measly 35 units.
- Switch OLED Model – 97,909 (3,488,037)
- PlayStation 5 – 64,420 (2,000,593)
- Switch – 47,125 (19,005,911)

I knew the PS4 version of Crisis Core would outsell the Switch version, but even the PS5 version? That's crazy when PS5 software sales have been non-existent. I guess Jim Ryan wasn't lying when he said they had sorted stock issues out. 70K has to be the highest in a long while. Not a bad week for PlayStation in Japan I suppose
@Sam_ATLUS Yeah, it's been over the news lately that there are PS5 consoles in stock with many retailers and are available for picking up on sight.
On the other hand, what's wrong with Microsoft consoles? They are barely selling, if at all. More stock issues?
@fR0z3nS0u1 At least in Japan, whether they're in stock or not, people won't buy Xbox consoles. It's been this way for quite some time and I say that's their loss
@fR0z3nS0u1 Microsoft paid for chip priority last year and the series S/X is available in shops in the UK and seem like the US as well, so it would be wrong to blame the Japan series sales on stock shortages. Its mainly down to xbox not being very popular in Japan, especially due to the amount of games that skip xbox. Also you'd wager the Japanese are more loyal to their own countries brands compared to westerners.
But still, the fact the 2DS out sold the series X 😬
@fR0z3nS0u1 PS5 stock has been good in Europe recently, people are finally seeing them in stores and they are usually very easy to order online. Japan sales for PS5 have been going up so they clearly have enough to supply now. As for Xbox we all know that system doesn't sell amazing in Japan, but they must not be supplying much stock to them for the holidays because those are some of the lowest numbers I've seen in a while. 35 Xbox Series X is crazy, that's how much the Xbox One was selling almost weekly in Japan. And I remember when people thought Xbox was having some kind of breakthrough in Japan because they outsold PS5 one week
Crisis Core will probably be here for a week or two and then disappear. It's an older game so those who originally play it will only play Reunion as a second visit.
I have yet to see a PS5 or Series X in stores and I live in Texas. I did see a PS5 at a Pawn Shop recently for $700 though. Also, surprised that Witch on the Holy Night isn't in the top 10 for Japan. I could understand it not being there for Europe or North America but anything related to Type Moon is mainstream in Japan.
A console that some would argue is 2 generations behind, 7 years old and hasn't had a price cut has outsold the PS5 by 100K units. (I won't mention XSX, that would be mean spirited.) It's just so impressive isn't it!
Merry Christmas everyone
@JustMonika Witch on the Holy Night was in the top 10 last week https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2022/12/japanese-charts-pokemon-scarlet-and-violet-sales-overtake-splatoon-3
Switch or iterations of the Switch are selling more than the others combined….
@fR0z3nS0u1 Software helps, if its library doesn't appeal to the Japanese market then all the power in the world won't help it. It's always struggled in Japan.
My guess is that a lot of stationed US military personal buy XBox in Japan, but might be going home for the holidays.
This makes a lot of sense, because PS4 and PS5 is where we also have Final Fantasy VII Remake, so it would make much more sense on a collection standpoint.
Is that Xbox Series X number right?
I suspect the fact that the Series S does steady numbers suggests it’s the availability of the Series X that is stifling sales more than antipathy to Microsoft. Game Pass is a pretty attractive offering no matter where in the world you are.
Pleased to see DQ Treasures is clinging on. That’s a pretty respectable total for a spin-off on a single platform.
Good switch numbers considering crisis core isn’t associated with Nintendo. Good switch software and hardware numbers overall.
Those PS5 numbers are impressive.
Poor Microsoft, though. Couldn't crack 1000 units sold between both models, lol.
Meanwhile, Splatoon and Pokemon continue to have absurd momentum.
@GrailUK he should change his name to Mr[Removed - trolling]
I remember when I first discovered the internet.
@WiltonRoots A sock puppet or a new face?
@WiltonRoots Lol. Well, I'm sure he will be happier with how the PS5 and XSX has performed over in the West.
@EaglyTheKawaiiShika Umm, I'd rather just assume he was painting with very large brush strokes and generalising.
@Quarth Smacks of sock puppet to me...happens all the time in these parts! I remember Sligeach came back about 4 times but couldn't disguise his trolling, Gatorboi came back about the same amount of times...
@WiltonRoots,
He is only being honest....... honest.
@EaglyTheKawaiiShika yep I've seen disdain towards Japanese people in here in the past. No room for that sort of narrow-mindedness around here. But hey, graphics. Power.
@WiltonRoots,
Gatorboi was awesome, loved the Wii U.... hated the Switch with a passion. In every sales related article he kept suggesting Switch sales would fall off a cliff, so as soon as this was not going to happen he checked out.
@johnvboy Nah he got banned a couple of times under different names, he'd come back on and make loads of snipes. There's still some sour Wii U owners out there crying. Seen a lot of people come and go on this site over the years, the really obnoxious ones don't have a very long shelf life at all. Seen 3-4 vanish just in this past year.
@WiltonRoots,
Not surprising those Wii U owners are a little bitter, as the Wii U bombed, and the Switch has been an awesome success.
@johnvboy I’ve said before, I bought the Wii U fully aware it was dying. Didn’t stop it having some great games. But it didn’t have the fraction of the Switch’s library. Dunno what it is I love an underdog. The Dreamcast and Saturn are two of my favourite consoles ever.
Surprisingly even spread for Crisis Core. Surprised Crisis Core sold on Switch as much as it did considering the platform doesn’t have FF VII Remake and Sony already has the FF audience on lock.
Crazy how the Pokémon gap on Splatoon 3 is getting even wider
@WiltonRoots,
Bought the Wii U at launch and loved the console, it deserved better sales imho.
@Sam_ATLUS I seen a ps5 in cex. Was blown away by the size of the thing! No way I'd ever buy one of those.
@johnvboy people weren’t ready for the gamepad yet! Amazing piece of kit.
Its fantastic sales for a spin-off port of a PSP game and interesting that PS5 outsells Switch on a multiplatform game that was build for a handheld
Congrats to 2DS for outselling XBSX! PS4 putting in impressive numbers too!
BTW XBSX came in at number 9, not 10 like the article says.
@dimi
Anything Final Fantasy-related should be selling best on PlayStation.
Wish it wasn't mission based. Feels like Ys on rails...
Weird... I bought 24 Xbox Series X's in Japan this week. I wonder who the other person was???
@westman98 Except for Crystal Chronicles Remastered. That sold best on Switch, but it's obvious why.
@JustMonika It released the previous week.
@johnvboy When you think about it, it's pointless being a troll on a gaming site as it's way too easy, there's so many hypersensitive gamers out there that don't even need poking for them to lose it in the comments...we see it in here every day!
@WiltonRoots,
So true, I was banned for ten days for poking one recently...in fairness they banned the other user as well.
Anyway have a good one mate, all the best for Crimbo.
@johnvboy you too mate…enjoy!
@westman98 Only if that game was originally on a PlayStation system, a majority of the Nintendo native Final Fantasy games usually sold best on Nintendo's platform.
