Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (26th October)

OldManHermit

I finished the Castlevania Dominus Collection awhile back, so now I'm playing through Symphony of the Night again. I dig the DS games, but Symphony still is the greatest of this style of 'vania. There's just something special about it. The music, the detailed visuals, everything just comes together perfectly. I just find it a joy to play through again and again, more so than the other games.

Speaking of liminal space, was at the production office for a show I'm working on the other day. They set up shop in a small section of an old law office that had been in disuse for god knows how long. Just a labyrinthine maze of carpeted corridors, empty offices and vast open common areas with depressing drop ceilings. It was basically being inside the backrooms, I'm not even kidding,

Re: Shadow Of The Ninja - Reborn Is Getting A Demo On Switch

OldManHermit

@NeonPizza Yeah, I played the demo as well. It definitely feels slower and more methodical than ninja gaiden, but that’s not a bad thing. It also happens to be gorgeous, it barely resembles the original nes game. As you say it does look like a 2d ps1 game, I was reminded of Megaman X4.

Re: 16-Bit Platformers Based On Halloween And Evil Dead Announced For Switch

OldManHermit

@Ralizah I’ve seen the first Rob Zombie remake, it sucks. He tries to make Micheal a sympathetic character with an abusive childhood, which I think ruins him. He was way scarier when he was a soulless murder machine with no clear motivation, just pure evil.

And I know it’s divisive, but I actually like Halloween 3 Season of the Witch. It’s when they tried to turn Halloween into an anthology horror series, with each movie being a self contained horror story that had nothing to do with Micheal Myers. But unfortunately it flopped, so they just went back to bringing Micheal back in every movie. Anyway, 3 is worth checking out if you haven’t seen it.

Re: Critically-Panned 'Borderlands' Movie Flops At The Box Office

OldManHermit

@Diogmites Oh yeah there are definitely some interesting themes at play in Prometheus about faith, the origin of humanity, and the search for immortality. And it is a very pretty movie. It’s trying to be high brow sci-fi, while also having the trappings of a bad b-movie, with the goofy writing. Like the guys with the high tech 3d mapping orbs who somehow still get lost, and then subsequently treat a horrifying alien snake like a cute puppy, lol. David was a great character tho, And the surgery scene with Shaw is intense as hell. I really just wish it was it’s own thing, and not connected to Alien. I feel like they just did that for marketing reasons.

Ah yes, I often lament there was never was a Conan 3, and they tease it at the end of both movies too. Absolutely missed opportunity.

Re: Critically-Panned 'Borderlands' Movie Flops At The Box Office

OldManHermit

@Diogmites Yeah, definitely some development hell that went on with 3.

In regards to Prometheus and Covenant, I just have a ton of issues with the writing in those movies which I won’t get into here. Suffice to say, lots of characters making nonsensical decisions. My main issue with those films however, is that it completely ruins the mystery of the space jockey, that being the giant alien corpse they find on the ship in the original film. That scene is so haunting and atmospheric, you just wonder what that thing was when it was alive and how it got there. Then according to Prometheus it’s just a big albino bodybuilder…okay. Oh, and by the way, David the android made the aliens with the black goo….like, really??? It’s stuff like that that makes the universe they established in the first film seem smaller. The space jockey and the alien did not need an origin story. It’s the mystery that made them interesting. It’s as if Ridley Scott doesn’t even understand the appeal of his own series. Anyway that’s just how I feel. There definitely is still some fun horror stuff in those movies, I feel like I might like them more if they had no connection to the Alien franchise.

Oh yeah Conan the Destroyer rocks, haha. It’s not as good as the first one, but it’s still a very fun fantasy quest kinda movie for sure.

@Diogmites Lol yeah, Brad Dourif spouting expositional dialogue whilst cocooned to a wall is hilarious. And yeah Weaver is great, you can tell she’s just having a lot of fun with the roll. Fun fact, the scene when she effortlessly makes a backwards 3 pointer shot on the basketball court apparently only took two takes!

I remember reading somewhere one of the original drafts for the script of Alien 3 involved Ripley landing on a wooden monastery planet inhabited by space monks. Certainly sounds more interesting than what we got.

Agreed the og Alien is still the best. Don’t get me started on Prometheus or Alien Covenant though, oof those movies are rough.

Re: Critically-Panned 'Borderlands' Movie Flops At The Box Office

OldManHermit

@Diogmites Haha, well I’m glad to hear there’s another fan of Alien Resurrection out there besides myself and a buddy of mine. It’s just a fun spin on the Alien premise that does not take itself too seriously. (Brad Dourif making kissy faces at the alien is too funny). It also happens to still look great years later. I will grant that Alien 3 does have a pretty epic ending, but overall I find it to be a depressing slog, with mostly terrible alien vfx.

Re: Critically-Panned 'Borderlands' Movie Flops At The Box Office

OldManHermit

The curse of the video game movie strikes again.

In regards to Alien Romulus, I just have no interest in seeing it for some reason, and I love the first two, (and 4 is a lot of dumb fun). I think I'm just tired of them dredging up these old franchises over and over again, they're almost always mediocre at best.
