Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. I know you mostly don't directly control Mario, but it counts right? Always loved that game, has such a unique tone and aesthetic.
@-wc- Yeah GB Dr Mario kinda sucks. Unlike Tetris, it just doesn't work as well in monochrome. And considering NSO already has the superior nes version, seems an odd inclusion. To echo many others, where's Mario Land Dammit!
It's been a long time since I've played NSMBW, but if I recall it's the multiplayer where it really shined. The madcap insanity that ensues trying to play with three other people was utterly hilarious. I don't think I've ever laughed so hard playing a game.
@Twilite9 Oh man, I'm right there with you. I'd used to go to China town to buy bootleg DBZ ovas, then go home and pause the tape and try to sketch the various characters.
Oh wow, I wake up and see this news, very sad to hear, the man was a true legend. His work was inspirational to me when I was a young artist, as is the case with many others I'm sure. RIP
The visuals in Rogue Squadron 2 were absolutely mind blowing back in the day, particularly the battle of Endor mission where you fly into the second death star. Really felt like playing a scene from the movie.
The super star wars games will always be close to my heart, even though I don't think I've ever actually beaten any of them, haha.
And I still love Shadows of the Empire. The use of licensed music from the films really helps elevate that game.
Europe by a Transylvanian country mile. Generally speaking, hand painted illustrations always beat cg renders, it also happens to be the most interesting composition.
Incidentally this is one of the few Castlevania games I never played.
@LadyCharlie Yeah those Taito collections were great, I still have them for my ps2. At least the the two capcom arcade stadium collections offer a comparable roster of games to those from the ps2 era.
I had no idea Donkey Kong on gameboy was considered such a classic. Guess I overlooked it all these years assuming it was just a port of the og arcade game.
@-wc- Even though they're not actually scary, I would absolutely consider Castlevania horror games, or at least horror themed. They are after all inspired by the classic Universal monster movies, as well as the Hammer horror films.
Doom I think also falls into horror action. It involves an oppressive sense of isolation, and blasting hordes of zombies and hell demons. Doom 3 in particular really leans into the horror elements.
@Beaucine Like most good horror, what you don't see is often scarier. In this case, the limited visuals forced you to fill in the blanks with your imagination.
I actually kinda love the NA cover. I have no idea what Jack Bros is, but it does make me want to play the game. Even though I'd probably be disappointed considering it's a virtual boy game of all things.
@LadyCharlie I think I agree with you for the most part, I generally play games for the gameplay first and foremost. However that’s not to say a game can’t also weave a compelling narrative on par with any book or film. It’s just another story telling medium.
If it's a heavily story driven game, then yes I absolutely want to go in blind. For instance, if I had played God of War Ragnarok, knowing the twist towards the end, it probably would've ruined my experience.
@MSaturn @Woderwick Mandy was incredible, I still listen to the soundtrack from time to time. Was lucky enough to catch it in the theatre when it came out. This game does seem to share it's colour palette.
I watched most of the first movie randomly with a buddy last week. It was, pretty bad. Shang Tsung just looked like somebody's dad, he lacked the menace of the original actor. And I don't know why they felt the need to create an original character, when the games already have a massive roster to draw from. I appreciated the uncompromising gore tho, even though the obvious cgi was distracting.

Re: Poll: Box Art Brawl - Mario & Luigi: Partners In Time
NA is by far the best, the other two feel kinda lazy by comparison. Also, is Luigi picking his nose?

Cool! Now we need a Psycho Goreman tie in game.
Re: Video: Digital Foundry's Technical Analysis Of Star Wars: Dark Forces Remaster
I never played this back in the day, but I'm on board. Seems to have a similar vibe to Shadows of the Empire, one of my fav star wars games.

I would love a new DKC with the darker, spookier tone of DKC2.
Re: Soapbox: I Hated Metroid: Zero Mission At First, Until I Loved It
Zero Mission's great, but I still prefer Fusion out of the two gba Metroids.

Re: Review: Alisa Developer's Cut (Switch) - An Excellent RE Homage That Nails The '90s Vibe
Definitely looks like my jam.
Re: Review: GRIME Definitive Edition (Switch) - A Poor Port Of A Superb Soulslike Metroidvania

Re: Atmospheric Adventure 'A Void Hope' Lands On Switch Later This Month
Well colour me intrigued.
Re: Best Nintendo Switch Fighting Games
A few of my faves not on this list,
Cyberbots - Think Street Fighter but with giant mechs
Last Blade 2 - Great fighter set in feudal Japan, with gorgeous sprite animation
Kizuna Encounter - Really fun tag team fighter set in a Road Warrior style post apocalyptic world.
and of course all the Darkstalkers games
Re: Surprise! Dave The Diver Is Getting Godzilla DLC
Mmm, irradiated sushi.

Re: Random: 'Resident Evil Kart' ROM Hack Brings Fixed Camera Angles To Super Mario Kart
Never had an issue with fixed camera angles and tank controls, but this just looks like pain.
Re: Random: It's Been 5 Years Since Metroid Prime 4 Was Rebooted
Jesus, 2017 feels like a lifetime ago. This would probably sting a lot more if we hadn't gotten Metroid Dread in the interim.
Re: Review: Bahnsen Knights (Switch) - Perhaps The Best Yet Of The Brilliant 'Pixel Pulps'
Not a genre I've dabbled in before, but I am a horror fan, and I love the aesthetic of this. Perhaps I'll give it a look see.
Re: Nintendo To Broadcast The Legend Of Zelda Orchestra Concert For Free
