Re: Feature: 16 Great Late-Gen Nintendo Games - Maybe There's Life In The Ol' Switch Yet

NerdyBoutKirby

Kirby Mass Attack is the best game of this distinction, no contest. You'll never find a DS game with nicer sprites and animations. The soundtrack by Shogo Sakai of Mother 3 fame is excellent, and the levels constantly invent creative gimmicks to keep the gameplay engaging.

As an amusing tidbit, Daroach actually advertises the 3DS in this game, saying it's "worth its weight in gold." The game is full of fun touches like that.

Re: Poll: Box Art Brawl: Super Scribblenauts

NerdyBoutKirby

Scribblenauts deserved better than it got. It went from a million-seller DS classic that players raved about, to completely dried up and forgotten a decade later. You can often find loose copies being sold cheap in eBay lots of shovelware games, alongside its brilliant cousin, Drawn to Life: The Next Chapter. A darn tragedy, 'tis.

Re: Talking Point: What's Your Perfect Sunday Morning Game?

NerdyBoutKirby

Church. Or maybe following that theme, LarryBoy and the Bad Apple (GBA)?

Okay, if you want a proper answer, Kirby's Dream Land 3 screams "Sunday morning" to me with its pastel art style and short length. Donkey Kong Country 3 also has that lower-stakes feel and a pleasant setting, but KDL3 fits a little better here.

Re: Feature: 33 Games We're Surprised Still Aren't On Switch

NerdyBoutKirby

Kirby and the Rainbow Curse would've been a perfect game to port alongside the Switch Lite, since the issue of docked play with that particular title wouldn't even be a concern for Lite adopters. In such a case, it would've released in 2020, between Star Allies and Forgotten Land--this would've been a great way to tide fans over beyond the small eShop games (and Kirby's Extra Epic Yarn for 3DS, which no one besides me bought). It would've knocked another Wii U game off the 'unported' list, too. Not to mention that porting an existing game is substantially less work than crafting a new one, and with everyone adjusting to new working conditions in 2020, that simplicity would've made sense.

I'll always root for my underdog clay game.

Re: Fire Emblem Engage Artist Celebrates First Anniversary With New Artwork

NerdyBoutKirby

I’m playing through the game right now, and controversially, I like it better than 3H. While its story is far from deep, the gameplay and presentation more than make up for it. I like the Somniel way better than Garreg Mach, as it feels like a warm and inviting vacation resort rather than a stark cathedral/school building. I have no patience for 3H’s “play through four (or even five) separate routes to fully understand the story” approach—one and done is good enough for me.

Re: Talking Point: What Are The Worst Parts Of Your Favourite Games?

NerdyBoutKirby

The worst part of my favorite game isn’t too bad: Kirby Mass Attack has a decent but forgettable first world. Every world after that is teeming with creative theming and level design, but Green Grounds is a bit unremarkable. There are a handful of stages that ask you to play them multiple times to explore all the splitpaths, but they’re also adequate stages.

The Gold Stars are annoying. You have to clear every stage without taking damage to get them, thus earning 100% completion. That’s a very strict demand from the devs, and not one I appreciate. But I’ve still done it twice.

Re: Poll: What Is Your Favourite Character Reveal Trailer For Super Smash Bros. Ultimate?

NerdyBoutKirby

Min Min got me very hyped. She was the first DLC fighter I’d been advocating for—ARMS deserved a fighter, and her design was the most inspired in the ARMS League. Couple that with how animated her trailer was and her crazy moveset, and you have an exciting reveal.

K. Rool and Banjo were the next best. I’m a huge Donkey Kong fan, and the energy surrounding Banjo was infectious.

Re: Best Nintendo Pinball Games

NerdyBoutKirby

I’m glad I’m not the only one celebrating Kirby’s Pinball Land’s 30th anniversary today (though it launched in Japan on Nov 27, so I celebrated it more then). Kirby’s Pinball Land is brilliant, and I’d tout it as one of Kirby’s best games, period. It’s charming, challenging, addicting, and everything else you want in a pinball game. I put it as the top of the list, with PKMN Pinball (GBC) right below it.

Re: Round Up: The Reviews Are In For Super Mario RPG

NerdyBoutKirby

I think they dropped the ball with marketing this. All the ads focus on Mario, Bowser, and Peach teaming up, as if that’s a new concept (it was in 1996, but not these days). Some commercials namedrop Mallow and Geno, but that’s it. The commercials should’ve explained the basic story of living weapons conquering Bowser’s Keep… and soon the world! That would be more attention-grabbing.

Re: Poll: What's The Best RPG Starring Mario?

NerdyBoutKirby

PM: TTYD and PM64 are 10/10 games, next best is SMRPG with a 9/10. Extremely fun games with mechanical depth, light-hearted stories, and unforgettable characters. Who doesn’t love helping a computer break his programming or deposing a charlatan who would crown herself Queen? And the foreshadowing of Tubba Blubba’s secret is excellent. I am incapable of playing those three games WITHOUT going for 100% completion—gotta cook every recipe, Tattle on every enemy, and gamble in Grate Guy’s Casino every time!

The next best are Super Paper Mario and M&L:BIS, both with 9s. I’ve loved ‘em ever since childhood. While SPM has more cracks in its foundation than its predecessors, the characters and story are phenomenal once again. Count Bleck and his eccentric henchmen steal the show, with Flint Cragley not far behind. BIS is a wacky, fun adventure that hits the best emotional bits in the M&L series (to my knowledge). Fawful and Midbus are the most memorable antagonists in that series, far surpassing Cackletta, Princess Shroob, and Antasma. The DS version also has the best title screen (visuals and music) in the series, strange as it is to mention.

I don’t know how to rate the others. Superstar Saga (3DS) was a blast when I played it last year, I’m currently enjoying BIS (3DS), I think PiT is overhated but simultaneously forgettable, and Dream Team is good but plodding. I disliked the original Superstar Saga when I played it as a teen, but I was more irritable back then. Skipped Paper Jam to avoid any more of that Sticker Star stink, and I heard it was undercooked by M&L standards.

I don’t know if the SMRPG or TTYD remakes will ever claim my heart more than the originals, but I’m tickled to let them try!

Re: Poll: Box Art Brawl - Duel: Kirby Mass Attack

NerdyBoutKirby

The best game of all time gets a Boxart Brawl!

North America wins easily. The Japanese version represents the Kirbys piling onto the heroic heart, which is a mechanic for ascending. But if you want to better convey the aggressive title of “Mass Attack,” you need cartoon explosions and comic mayhem, like in the North American version. Couple that with appealing blue and indigo stippling, complementary yellow, and the only known artwork of Battybat, and you have a wonderful box. Who doesn’t want to see a spider get kicked in the eye?

Re: Talking Point: Nintendo's Still Making Them, So What amiibo Do You Still Want To See?

NerdyBoutKirby

@Not_Soos If we’re including out-of-date Zelda characters, those are good picks! But my heart goes to the Thunderbird and 8-bit Link from Zelda II. Love that game to pieces. Groose and Vaati + Ezlo would be great, too.

An amiibo related to a partner from the 3DS game, Stella Glow, would be great as well. The demo left a great impression on me, but I’ve yet to play the whole thing.
And if SEGA gets in on amiibo (I’m surprised they didn’t), get me Opa-Opa, B.D. Joe, Billy Hatcher, and the Bonanza Bros. stat!

Re: Talking Point: Nintendo's Still Making Them, So What amiibo Do You Still Want To See?

NerdyBoutKirby

-Geno for sure, and Mallow as well.
-Magolor would be great. He’s been itching for one this whole time.
-I’d gobble up a classic Paper Mario line, now that TTYD is getting a remake. Imagine the Mr. Game & Watch figure but with Mario and partners! (Maybe even the Super Paper Mario villains, if I’m allowed to dream.)
-If I can REALLY dream, Aeron and Elena from Pandora’s Tower. The Wii game hasn’t been in the spotlight since 2013, but if they remade it, I’d want some figurines!
-A 2D WarioWare line also has potential. Surprised they never made Ashley and Mona for the Japanese crowd.
-Luigi with Poltergust. I’d like the Poltergust 5000 since I think it’s the best looking vacuum Luigi has donned, and Dark Moon is getting that remake. But any future Poltergust would be more likely.
-King Boo. MUST be the Next Level Games design!
-Cuphead could do with an amiibo. Maybe even Mugman and Miss Chalice, too.
-Swordfighter Peach! She’s quite popular. Just avoid giving her the Illumination face and it’ll be good.
-Dixie Kong and Cranky Kong, if another Tropical Freeze game is on the cards.
-I’d be down for an ARMS line, but I know that’s a pipedream.
