They’re quality art pieces, but they don’t particularly resemble Super Mario Land. Choosing the submarine or Egyptian stages to recreate in 16-bit would’ve conveyed it a bit better.
A new mode and new idols, that’s all I ask. Just give me something that hooks me like Salmon Run did in 2017 and I’ll be good to go. But I’m growing concerned that’ll be a many-months-post-launch addition like Clam Blitz was in Splatoon 2.
The good news is that if Splatoon 3 doesn’t excite us, we can just pour more hours into Splatoon 2, Nintendo’s best Switch game. It deserves it.
Some of my favorite pieces: -Pandora’s Tower: Collector’s Edition, stitched together from various sellers over the years. Includes NA and PAL discs. -CIB Player’s Choice version of Donkey Kong Country 3, stitched together from various sellers/traders in about a month. -Kirby’s Super Star Stacker (Super Famicom) cartridge, in excellent condition and inside the original plastic sleeve. Cost only $60, which is dumbfounding for such an elusive game. -Virtual Boy with box, and mostly-complete NA library. Stitched together over several years. -Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia Special Edition. -Rare Kirby Mass Attack poker chip, given to GameStop managers at one company meeting in 2011. That was pretty cheap, likely because most people don’t care about Kirby’s secret best game. -Cobalt blue 3DS with Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon bundle box. This one’s bittersweet because I lent the 3DS to my cousin and haven’t seen it in three years. Neither has he. -Four pairs of DK Bongos. One of them has the letters “E3” printed twice on its underside, which leads me to believe it came from the E3 2005 show floor, where Donkey Kong Jungle Beat was demoed.
Five years is a long time for anything. I was halfway through college when Splatoon 2 launched, now I’m graduated and working. As long as each new entry has the gameplay I crave and new features to set itself apart, I have no problem buying a new Splatoon every couple years. That what we do for series we love.
I want more exciting news about the game (Modes? Idols?), but I will admit, this might be the game with the least consequences. If they win you over? Buy Splatoon 3. If they don’t? Play more Splatoon 2, my favorite Switch game.
@Alana_Hagues I forgot Sacred Stones and Path of Radiance released the same year. The craziest example is 2017, which saw three releases: FE Heroes, FE Echoes, and FE Warriors! What a time to be alive.
Maybe this time you won’t spend half the time on a college campus picking up loose objects your students drop in the hallways. The only thing more mundane for a fantasy-war game would be making you a housewife. With any luck, this new game will be fantastic and hook me better than Three Houses.
We need more of this. How many times have they released a limited edition of a game you’re not that hyped about, and then you play the standard edition and get really hooked? Now you have to track down the used goods from the LE and hope they’re affordable. This happened to me with Xenoblade 2, and may happen again here.
I play my rare games. I’m not trying to preserve them for centuries, you can expect a little dust or skin oil to get on games. I have played my copy of Kirby’s Super Star Stacker (SFC), but it spends most of its time inside its original plastic sleeve.
To recap, Advance Wars and BOTW2 were delayed, Splatoon 3 has been drip feeding info to a concerning degree (shouldn’t we know the new idol characters by now?), and even the Mario movie got pushed back. Customers are still hostile to the $50 NSO Expansion Pack, and N64 games have been added pretty slowly for those who signed up.
Yeah, I can see why Xenoblade 3 traded places with Splatoon 3.
This chart is pretty old, actually. I think they first revealed it in 2019 because of FinalFest. It shouldn’t surprise me that they’ve rereleased it, though.
I’m very proud of the Player’s Choice DKC3 I assembled in November. It looks super clean in its box protector. I found the Player’s Choice version to be exotic with its blue-green-yellow gradient in the corner, and the golden Super Nintendo logo. In my book, it is “the best of Super Nintendo.”
Absolutely amazing and color-coordinated! But I must ask, have you found the elusive Kirby's Super Star Stacker for Super Famicom? That's a doozy to acquire, and I only found a copy myself because my cat almost died while I was vacationing.
If we ignore 64 3D, Assault is the next in line. It's a respectable attempt to carry the series forward that also provides awesome multiplayer. Many a weekend was spent with friends on that!
I put DS and Wii. Look at your collection and tell me you don't have a massive pile of high-quality DS games. Both systems sold extremely well which opened the floodgates to developers making excellent games for them. Sure, some devs took the easy way out and made shovelware, but there was a glut of fantastic games and sequels on them. DS/DSi alone had two Mario & Luigis, three Mario vs. Donkey Kongs, two Zeldas, three Tingles, four Kirbys, three WarioWares, two Fire Emblems, two Chibi-Robos, two Fossil Fighters, two Starfys, 12 Pokemons (grouping pairs together), three Castlevanias, six Ace Attorneys, four Prof. Laytons, eight Mega Mans (grouping counterparts together)... and that's not mentioning singular games like NSMB, Mario Kart, Mario Party, Super Princess Peach, DK Jungle Climber, Star Fox Command, Okami-Den, Wario: Master of Disguise, and more! That is a cavalcade of quality for just one handheld line!
I'm the one who originally scanned that Foley artwork from a Japanese Kirby: Squeak Squad guidebook and posted it on (FANDOM) Kirby Wiki back in 2014. The current version was transparentized by another editor. Always happy to help. =P
The worst reveal was Byleth, but not for the reason you're thinking. They show Fire Emblem: Three Houses footage and then attempt to surprise you with the Smash Bros. reveal... in a Smash Bros.-specific direct. It was clearly designed with a standard Nintendo Direct in mind, but that didn't pan out due to scheduling. The same thing happened with Corrin's reveal in Smash 4.
Breath of the Wild’s OST pales in comparison to DKC: Tropical Freeze’s. Look up Seashore War, Fruity Factory, Funky Waters, or Windmill Hills for a fantastic time.
I’m convinced all these stages are being made for MK9 and released early as DLC for 8, so I expect to play them whenever 9 rolls around. Also not a major MK fan, so I can shrug it off if my prediction is wrong.

It pays to hoard plastic and cardboard.
