Re: Poll: What's The Best Kirby Game?

NerdyBoutKirby

I don’t know how they pulled it off, but the two best Kirby games were released one month apart in 2011. Mass Attack and Return to Dream Land forever, in that order. Not to toot my own horn, but I hold the world record speed run for KMA’s most competitive category: Survival Rush.

I’m also a Pinball Land and Rainbow Curse apologist.

Re: Nintendo's Direct Archive Appears To Have Been Updated, And It's Got Some Fans Excited

I really don't get the whole "General vs. Mini" debacle. Fans act like Mini Directs aren't exciting game announcements, or that they don't exist.

"It's been over a year since our last Direct!"
Actually, we had one back in March.
"That was a Mini Direct, it doesn't count!"
It was half an hour long and featured around two dozen game announcements, including Smash DLC and classic Star Wars games. The only reason it was a Mini is because they chose to call it that.

Re: Kirby Developer HAL Laboratory Teases New Projects For 2021

The sentiments in this comment section are in agreement that a new 3D game would be appreciated, especially if it's better than Star Allies. I would add that they need to take time to give the new game original content. Program a new physics engine, no more reused assets and music, let some overused bosses chill for a while (looking at you, Whispy and Kracko). That really nags at me whenever I buy a new Kirby game--as a college grad, they still look and feel nearly identical to the ones I bought in high school.

On a side note, could we get a new director or two for some side projects? Mari Shirakawa directed Kirby Mass Attack in 2011 as her first director's credit, and it's the best game ever. Kentaro Sei directed the classic Kirby's (Extra) Epic Yarn, Kazushige Masuda did a stellar job on Kirby and the Rainbow Curse, and Takashi Hamamura had great ideas with Kirby: Squeak Squad. I'd love to see what other directors could do with Kirby's world and characters, the stories and gameplay they could bring, and the inspired characters they could design.

Re: What Are Your Most-Played Switch Games This Year? Find Out With Nintendo's Year In Review

911 hours, which I'll excuse since COVID trapped me indoors for several months. My top 5 games were:
1. Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition (99.9% completed!)
2. Super Nintendo Entertainment System - Nintendo Switch Online (Mario no Super Picross was the majority)
3. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (Min Min maining)
4. Tetris 99 (Finally won once!)
5. Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA (Got for Christmas 2019, crammed to finish before Christmas 2020)

Re: Random: Sakurai's Nod To Super Mario RPG In His Latest Smash Ultimate Photo

I get why people are disappointed, but I’m not totally convinced he’s out of the running. His costume was ported from Sm4sh with only a few visual tweaks, suggesting little time was put into it. If they’d upgraded it to be like Cuphead or Sans, then I’d be worried something better wasn’t coming. Given that costumes can exist of playable fighters (ie Link, Samus, Meta Knight), this doesn’t invalidate his chances entirely.

Smash fans do whatever they can to weed out potential characters since the wishlist is so vast, which makes sense—but I feel it does Sakurai a disservice. Remember when Min Min was impossible to implement? Little Mac was doomed to be an Assist Trophy after Brawl. Samurai said point-blank that Ridley was impossible. Heck, aren’t people speculating that Waluigi will be announced? Smash Bros. character rules are frequently broken.

Re: Nintendo Expands Its Switch Online SNES And NES Service With Five More Titles

Sweet, DKC3! It's one of my favorite games, and now a new generation of non-Wii U and New 3DS owners can experience it! I was concerned they'd skip this one or release it alongside other games that eclipse it. Glad I was wrong.

Go play DKC3 on Friday if you've never tried it. It's very polished and full of variety, with beautiful SNES graphics and a healthy difficulty curve.

Re: A New Drawn To Life Game Has Been Rated For The Nintendo Switch

Holy cow, my mind is reeling. I've been waxing on about how fantastic the DtL series was for almost a decade--how the story is filled with deep characters, intrigue, religious allegory, political satire, and heartwrenching emotion, with a divisive (excellent) ending. This is very exciting, but has me concerned as well. Can a different studio continue the story in a compelling way true to 5th Cell's style? Can a game that effectively undoes DtL2's ending be a worthwhile continuation? And what happens if it's the weak link in the story (ignoring the non-canon Wii disaster)? There's a lot left unknown here, but I want to be optimistic.

Re: How Well Do You Know Kirby?

This is my calling...! 10/10, easily. I've been an admin on Kirby Wiki since high school.

For the record, Twinkle Popo was the working name of Kirby's Dream Land. Kirby himself was called Popopo.

@KryptoniteKrunch It depends on how that fanservice is used. Plenty of fanservice is poorly implemented or used as a cheap way of getting praise from the player. In Star Wars, Boba Fett was a popular character for Episode VI; if he'd flown out of the Sarlacc, had a change of heart to join the Rebels, and assassinated Emperor Palpatine in a glorious fashion... that would purely be fanservice, far worse than letting the main characters deal with the Emperor like in the final film.

That's an extreme example, sure. But there's a fine line between giving the audience some love and pandering for easy credit.
