Re: Surprise! Nintendo Announces Indie World Showcase For Thursday 7th August 2025

Metazoxan

@Jack_Goetz on what basis aside from you just deciding it?

No one is realistically expecting anything major from an indie show cases within three months from the switch 2 release.

Nothing is riding on this. It would be a great surprise if they announced something big, but realistically at best we'll get a silksong release date. It's supposed to have a playable demo at the next con so it should be getting close.

Listen ... It's fine to anticipate. But you can't shove un realistic expectations on people. You need to give devs time to actually put stuff together for the switch 2.

Looking at past consoles the switch 2's launch line up is pretty decent. DK Bananza even proved to be more of a hit than anyone expected.

Re: Surprise! Nintendo Announces Indie World Showcase For Thursday 7th August 2025

Metazoxan

@Jack_Goetz not really. People acting like the last direct was some disaster are forgetting all of the already announce games like prime 4, than bloodborn like game, and a few others that weren't for me so I forget their names.

Point is While not overflowing with new content the switch 2 is having a decent early launch. Games take time guys and most devs haven't had switch 2 devkits for even 6 months.

You can't expect everything to just be instantly announced.
@McMongoose OR ... Maybe just have realistic expectations instead of acting like every showcase within 3 months of release needs to be legendary.

People need to just calm down and give devs sometime to cook. We have a handful of good announcements across all of the directs. Maybe they weren't all for you but that's to be expected.

Re: Surprise! Nintendo Announces Indie World Showcase For Thursday 7th August 2025

Metazoxan

@Morph doubtful. While people were underwhelmed. People still overall reacted positively to many of the game announcements themselves.

They certainly couldn't put an entire showcase together in a week. I think they just hid it to last minute to give it more impact.

Or if anything they didn't mention it until now to avoid excessive anticipation.

Indie show cases can be amazing or boring. Depends on if any indie gems are in the works or not.

Not every indie game is groundbreaking.

So for this I say keep expectations within reason, but feel free to hope for something good.

Re: Kirby Air Riders Has Been Rated For Switch 2

Metazoxan

@LazyDaisy Listen I know you just want to imagine your favorite games getting new entries and stuff.

But realistically it's going to be hard to to make a new smash bros.

They can't really outdo ultimate in terms of scale.

So while. You may reject a deluxe version, that's the more realistic option. Maybe with a couple new fighters squeezed in. It's the only real way to go further in terms of scale.

Of course the other option is to go in reverse and return to the scale of the first smash bros and go for a reinvention of the base gameplay instead.

This way they could reduce scale without looking inferior to Ultimate. This will be riskier but would allow actual room for growth.

Which of these two options Nintendo takes is unknown and the fact this is a complicated decision means we might be waiting longer than you think for a new smash bros. Yes ultimate was a system seller, but that doesn't mean just making a new entry is that easy.

Indo hope to see something eventually. But do be ready to wait a while. Forcing a new game too early will just blow up in their faces.

Re: Reaction: Switch 2 Needed A Partner Showcase With Pep; This Wasn't It

Metazoxan

@Waxifari IMO its much simpler than that. Nintendo isn't playing 4D chess here. This is just the consequence of them being so right lipped on the console and so stingy with dev kits prior to release.

They had their reasons for doing that. But as a result, most third parties only even had the chance to work on switch 2 games a couple months ago ... That's it. Nintendo's first part output is pretty solid and the console is selling well so third party support will come.

They need time to actually do it.

Re: Reaction: Switch 2 Needed A Partner Showcase With Pep; This Wasn't It

Metazoxan

People really acting like this direct needed to be something.

DK Bonanza has turned out better than anyone imagined. Were getting prime 4 later. Plus even if it wasn't in this direct silksong is coming.

Plus there is that bloodborn like game ... This was just a small direct to announce some stuff coming out soon and a couple new announcements coming out relatively soon.

Plus most third parties didn't get advanced dev kits. So it should be obvious that most third parties won't have much to show yet aside from. Some that did probably just took their switch 1 builds and tweeked it last minute.

I'm not saying this direct was amazing btw. But it really feels like people were expecting E3 levels of hype when this was probably only ever meant to be a minor update.

Re: Nintendo Direct Partner Showcase Announced For Tomorrow, 31st July 2025

Metazoxan

@RupeeClock the thing is Nintendo kept the switch 2 under pretty heavy lock and key so not a lot of third parties got dev kits before launch.

So it's not surprising that most third party switch 2 support is mostly ports.

That being said not only has the switch 2 sold.well. but it's status as an updated switch above all else means more stuff will come out as developers take advantage of the better hardware instead of settling for compromise to get some games on switch.

Re: Poll: So, Will You Be Getting Super Mario Party Jamboree For Switch 2?

Metazoxan

Honestly... Personally I wish they had just made some new boards IMO. Maybe expand co-op party size so you could do the 16 player mode with gaming groups you're part of.

But on the other hand I think what a lot of criticism is missing is jamboree TV wasn't made for us. Looking at the reveal trailer my first thought was "this kinda looks like those Japanese game shows I've seen clips of".

So I think the reason the new mode looks so unappealing to a lot of us is it's tapping into Japanese culture and nostalgia. It doesn't work as well if you didn't grow up with those shows.

Re: UK Charts: No Prizes For Guessing Who Overtook Donkey Kong Bananza This Week

Metazoxan

@Hwatt that's fair. One thing to keep in mind though is just because Nintendo is doing well doesn't mean they can afford to take big losses. With games costing so much to make they pretty much need to keep doing well to survive.

It's certainly fair to be critical. But I just want to emphasize against the idea that any big company, Nintendo or otherwise. Can afford to be careless.
I don't think that's what you meant, but I just wanted to say it because I do see plenty of people go so far as to act like any company they see as big enough has infinite money.

Re: Random: DK Enthusiast Breaks Switch 2 In Bananas Spray Painting Job Gone Wrong

Metazoxan

That wasn't even the right shade of yellow. Now even close.

I also think this was just for attention because
1. If he cared that much he'd get the color right.
2. Am I seeing that right? Did he spray paint the pins? Even if it fit you can't play it like that. Wouldn't you protect the pins?
3. How do you even get it that stuck? Even if the spray paint made it fit worse you'd have to ignore it clearly not fitting and trying to hammer it in any way.

This story just feels off.

Re: UK Charts: Donkey Kong Bananza Is A Hit, But Sells Less Than Half Of Super Mario Odyssey

Metazoxan

The fact it's so soon after launch as well as the fact DK is only just getting limelight after almost 2 decades of relative obscurity are definitely the main reasons.

But I feel word of mouth is going to get most Nintendo fans to get it eventually and when they do DKs status will grow into a more console moving name.

They should probably also do more collab efforts. Like Bananza DLC for MKW or a new Mario vs DK title.

I'm not a DK fan but I adore Bananza. So there is absolutely potential to build DK up and boost sales down the line.

Re: Mailbox: Ninty Getting Its Freak On, Area Codes, The 'Discourse' - Nintendo Life Letters

Metazoxan

Honestly the switch 2 discourse has been amazing in outing all of the worthless grifter YouTubers not worth giving the time of day.

I probably blocked over 25 channels by the time stuff calmed down. And it wasn't that I blocked the smallest negative opinion.

If it was just a mild take I'd block the specific video rather than the channel simply because I just wasn't interested in people fussing over rumors.

No the ones I blocked were the numerous channels trying to declare damn war on Nintendo. I wouldn't have cared so much if they didn't also ignore Microsoft and Sony doing stuff like raising prices.

But I was able to regain my sense of hype.once I shut that all down and just stopped engaging.

And now I'm enjoying the heck out of DK Bananza, seriously this game alone might be worth the switch 2. Or at least a good chunk of it.

Re: Nintendo Is Seeking Player Feedback On Game-Key Cards In Japan

Metazoxan

@Nintendo_Thumb switch 1 cartridges might be cheaper than switch 2. But they still cost more than keycards.

From what I understand Nintendo views keycards as a way for digital games that can't afford physical releases a way to be displayed in stores.

Meaning offering switch 1 carts that they weren't using when releasing digital only switch 1 games won't have a point.

It's also possible they want to slow down switch 1 chip production and migrate fully to switch 2. Meaning the last thing they'd want is to commit to continuing switch 1 chip production.

There are a few other possible reasons I could think of but they are all more or less like this.

I do hope Nintendo sees the demand for physical and offers lower capacity chips later on. For that we need to CALMLY but firmly state what we want.

Meaning don't just scream hatred over keycarts. But specifically that we want games on carts. That's the only way to have any hope of discouraging keycarts.

Re: Nintendo Is Seeking Player Feedback On Game-Key Cards In Japan

Metazoxan

@Misima sigh ... First of all Even if that was somehow Nintendo's goal. They'd need to actually put physical games as an option for that to work.

IDK what you think investors are but they aren't so braindead to not consider normal game cards separate from keycards.

Secondly .... And I've mentioned this before NINTENDO HAS STATED THEY AREN'T USING KEYCARDS THEMSELVES!

Now I certainly can't promise that won't ever change. But it likely won't, unless people stop buying physical, because since Nintendo produces those as well their sales are part of profits as well.

Besides the last thing Nintendo would EVER do is give up it's presence in retail stores. Having a dominant presence in stores is a big advantage for them. I don't think you understand stand how valuable that is.

If anything Nintendo would want to switch to key cards Rather than switch to digital only. Since they could save on chip cost while maintaining store presence. But at least for now they have very little reason to do that. As long as people still buy full game cards they'll keep selling them.

Listen it's fine to question corporate motives. But not EVERYTHING is some nefarious scheme to rip people off. It's also entirely possible a company just makes an honest mistake or such. You need to look at what they stand to gain or lose to help figure out which.

Rigging this survey gains them nothing useful. So while we don't know everything, we know there is very little chance of it being rigged.

Re: Nintendo Has Seemingly Taken Further Steps To Combat 'eSlop' On Switch 2

Metazoxan

@UmbreonsPapa one of Nintendo's flaws is they can be a bit slow when it comes to online support.

Perhaps partly due to traditional Japanese culture they still largely focus on local play, almost begrudgingly extending that to online at first.

They've gradually gotten better, with Mario kart world being especially built with strong online support and the virtual consoles slowly getting updates.

But they still seem slow to adapt to really building up their online stuff. The shop being a big example.

Re: Nintendo Is Seeking Player Feedback On Game-Key Cards In Japan

Metazoxan

@Misima except there is no reason to rig the poll. Nintendo isn't even using game keycards themselves so it's not like they need positive poll data for investors.

Nintendo loses nothing from people wanting physical games. So they gain nothing from rigging it.

Again you need to understand that Nintendos public stance is that these are meant to be companions to digital only games.

Thats almost definitely not what third parties intend. But this poll reflects Nintendo's intentions. We just need to make our desire for physical known.

Re: Nintendo Is Seeking Player Feedback On Game-Key Cards In Japan

Metazoxan

@Misima it's not rigged. Nintendo views game cards as an alternative to digital.

So despite the narrative that key cards represent the death of physical media that's not really how Nintendo is advertising them. It's been stated game keycards are so digital games can have a presence in physical stores.

Of course what Nintendo intends and what third parties actually do are two separate matters. So there is cause for concern.

But it's not simply raging against keycards, but making it clear physical releases are desired.

Re: PSA: You Might Want To Be Careful Buying Pre-Owned Switch 1 Games For Your Switch 2

Metazoxan

@Mocznik "Buying used game is not a crime, then why is Nintendo punishing wrong people?" are you just pretending to be clueless or do you really not have basic reasonign ability?

It even explained in the article that Nintendo saw the game card's unique ID on multiple systems which triggered the ban. In theory that would only happen if you hacked and copied the data.

So from a system standpoint it saw piracy and flagged all systems involved.

The person who bought the game was innocent but the system has no way of knowing this. But they were also unbanned once they proved to Nintendo they simply purchased the game and didn't make a copy themselves.

So Nintendo didn't "Punish the wrong people", someone just got flagged for unknowingly using a game illegally copied and the situation was explained and cleared up.

for someone claiming to support reasonable conversation you sure seem to ignore everything that doens't support your rant.

BTW forcibly comparing a store front that doesn't produce or publish most of the games sold on it with a company that does ... is incredibly short sighted.

Re: FBI Shares Official Statement After Seizure Of Major Switch ROM Site

Metazoxan

@KingMike see that I agree with. But if you want to play ethical pirate you have to not cross the line.

The problem with ROM sites like this is they spread around new and even not yet released games.

You can't do that and then pretend your fight for game preservation. Far too many are using that as a mere excuse.

That's not to say ethical pirates who stay away from recent releases don't exist. But they don't vindicate all of piracy.

Re: FBI Shares Official Statement After Seizure Of Major Switch ROM Site

Metazoxan

@NorrinRadd What gets me are the many people acting like this somehow has litterally anything to do with Island guy's list. "This is all a smoke screen to hide the List" ... why the hell would anyone that cares about the list forget about it because the FBI busted some piracy ROM site?

It's sometimes easy to forget when you frequent gaming sites but not everyone actually plays games. and only some that do would at all care about some ROM site getting busted. This has F all to do with the list, because no one talking about it is going to suddenly stop because of this.

I mean ... if you WERE willing to completely ignore a big trafficking scandal because of some videogame pirates getting busted then I really question your priorities.

Re: FBI Shares Official Statement After Seizure Of Major Switch ROM Site

Metazoxan

@Dee123 exactly. I can understand emulating and gather roms for games not on current hardware. But then people will go and get defensive when someone openly sharing ROMs of games that just came out.

I"ve seen some people trying to make arguments like "But what if I lose the physical game?" or "I can't afford it" ... if you lose what you buy that's your fault, you don't get to just pirate extra copies because you're clumsy and if you can't afford it ... I mean that sucks but to a certain degree you just have to deal with that.

unless you're wealthy or naturally live a cheap lifestyle you can't afford EVERYTHING you want to buy. that's just life and part of being an adult is controlling yourself and choosing what to buy.

Now if the situation gets bad enough that you can't afford any games ... that's an issue. But people make these kinds of arguments no matter the situation.

Game preservation is an issue that we need to work on but that's not an excuse for just outright stealing and distributing games people are fully able to buy normally.

Re: Feature: "It Was Hell" - Spike Chunsoft Devs Discuss 'No Sleep For Kaname Date - From AI: THE SOMNIUM FILES'

Metazoxan

What I want to know is did they unbutcher the story from the first game?

What killed this series for me was how the devs stupidly reversed litterally all of the cahracter development from the first game so that you could play the first or second game in any order.

Sure they had a "Spoiler mode" but all that did was add some dialogue that aknowledged the first game as passing remarks.

The first game ended with the main character ... well I won't spoil for those interested in playing the first game. But all you have to know is he very much ended in a completely different state from how he began. Second game undoes all of this and even have him wear a mask to look like he did before "because it was familiar" which is the most nonsense excuse ever.

The problem is it compeltely kills any investment I have in the story if the devs plan to just reverse any progress because some idiot thinks they need to make the games playable in any order but also isn't willing to write the story in a properly episodic manner.

I'm STILL not actually clear on how this game takes the prior ones into account. So I'm still tentative with this game.

I'll only consider getting it if it fixes that nonsense. Story is a big part of why I take an interest in games so what they did was a massive blow to my interest.

Re: Miyamoto Views Games As 'Products', Not 'Works Of Art', Says Ex-Nintendo Dev

Metazoxan

@Jeyl you specifically picked minimal products that served a basic function.

But a TV is also a product. Toys are products. Board games are products.

Products are not simply made for the moment and then forgotten, or at least not all of them are.

In miyamoto's case he is viewing it more in the sense that as a product it must satisfy the customer.

If you don't like a product you'll get a refund or not buy it again. So customer satisfaction is also part of being a product.

Miyamoto is not perfect but his view point isn't wrong either. Rather it's more he just doesn't understand what some customers define as satisfied.

Not everyone wants the same things after all.

And think about the reverse. Think about "Games" made as art without thought put into making the game fun or satisfying. Even if they are pretty and artsy ... Did you actually enjoy the game? Would it have been better as a movie or book?

I'm not saying videogames can't also have art in them. But some games would absolutely benefit from more focus put on making the game actually satisfying to play.

Re: Miyamoto Views Games As 'Products', Not 'Works Of Art', Says Ex-Nintendo Dev

Metazoxan

@Orwellian87 if you think for even a second THAT is what Miyamoto meant then you are clueless.

An seriously you have the most distorted view of product I've ever seen.

A product is simply something made by a person, the result of production. Sure on the LOW END products are disposable and mass produced. But even custom made or hand crafted things are "products".

To say something is a product doesn't mean it's meaningless. He makes it pretty clear what he's saying is that he makes games with the customer in mind. He's making games people would enjoy and want to buy. Not just some "fancy artsy" junk that acts out the creators self expression but is a slog to actually play.

Art isn't made to be fun, art is made to express. Express the artist themselves, their beliefs, their past, or their perception of the world. Art is made as an extension of the artist themselves more than anything. It can still be beautiful and appreciated by others, but art is often creator focused. But that's fine, part of what people love about art is how it reflects the creator and such.

But games need to be more that some emotional mirror. They can certainly have those qualities as well, but the game needs to be fun. In this sense you could say videogames can contain art but should be focused on being a satisfying product first.

Re: Miyamoto Views Games As 'Products', Not 'Works Of Art', Says Ex-Nintendo Dev

Metazoxan

@Danrenfroe2016 exactly I think what miyamoto means is that he views games as something made for customers to enjoy.

While people can enjoy art, art itself is often made primarily with the artists views and desires in mind.

In a way you could say art reflects the artist more than anything and is made by them for themselves. They just sell their creations afterwards to anyone interested.

Videogames, on the other hand, should not purely be a reflection of the developer or made by them for themselves or their own expression. A Videogame should be made primarily to be enjoyed by the player.

The lead developer might imprint some of themselves into the game, but that should be secondary to making a satisfying game for the players.

Re: "It Will Have A Chilling Effect On Game Design" - EU Group Responds To 'Stop Killing Games'

Metazoxan

Honestly if you peel away all of the pro-corpo and anti-Corpi BS the answer to all of this is simply people need to understand what they are buying when they buy a game that requires servers.
You aren't buying the server and your one time purchase is certainly not paying it's upkeep. So you can't really tell a company they HAVE to pay for those servers.

HOWEVER at the same time this shows how the over reliance on server based gaming has its downsides.

Forcing companies to maintain servers will absolutely turn such games into risky ventures... But maybe that's a good thing. Maybe having less games shackled to servers and those that are made with no choice but to commit long term is what we need.

So the real issue is less "Consumer rights" and more people have ignored the issues with server based gaming for too long.

Re: Talking Point: One Month On, How Did Nintendo's Switch 2 Launch Go?

Metazoxan

@Mr_Zurkon Keycards are largely a third party issue. Despite some trying to heap hate on Nintendo they only provided the option. The idea of it was to allow developers have SOMETHING to put on store shelves even if they couldn't do a normal physical run given the cost of game carts going up.

However what's actually happening, at least to some degree, is any major studio that wants to bump their profit margins will just go key-card and pocket the saved cash.

I don't actually think Nintendo was in the wrong to create the option ... but I feel they should have tried to put some limits or conditions so that big studios that can absolutely afford physical can't just exploit it.

Also as far as price it's not like competition is actually any cheaper. In fact Sony and MIcrosoft are raising prices.

Re: Nintendo's Ability To Ban Switch 2 Consoles Has Landed It In Hot Water

Metazoxan

@huroma because it's not about giving up ownership. It's about not breaking the rules. You can lose the rights to things if you abuse those rights. It's not distopian unless it's applied to an extreme. But that's true for any rule.

Just because you own the console doesn't mean your now free to just hack it, steal their code, and then use that to steal their games.

If Nintendo or any company bricked a console for reasons besides something potentially related to piracy that would be one thing.

It's like a car. Just because you bought a car doesn't mean you don't lose that car if you do something illegal with it. You own the car, but if you insist on breaking the law with it they will take it away.

That's true for any company. It's just a matter of what they deem an important enough violation to act on.

Re: Nintendo's Ability To Ban Switch 2 Consoles Has Landed It In Hot Water

Metazoxan

@huroma the problem is authorities won't do ***** against most people pirating games. Unless they're stealing thousands of dollars worth of games alone or selling stolen goods it isn't worth their time.

And banning accounts just keeps them out of the store, plus making a new account isn't hard.

To a certain degree this is the only way they can even try to stop piracy. Now I'm not saying Nintendo is faultless either ... This approach of theirs needs some work. Especially with bricked consoles getting resold.

Really if nothing else Nintendo should probably allow stores to unbrick them and if that gets abused sue the store. Easier than trying to send the authorities after everyone that does it.
