Pretty good news overall and that physical digital split is rather telling regarding the whole keycard thing. with that we can definitely say people will just have to accept key cards. At least in terms of their overall existence. Clearly enough people don't mind so they're selling well enough.
If you don't like it yourself go ahead and just do digital. But any delusions of somehow boycotting and sending a message is dead.
But for anyone worried, don't be. The main reason for keycards is to get around high costs of big cards and they said they were working on cheaper smaller ones that don't compromise on performance. So it's not looking like keycards will replace physical entirely. The only way that would happen at this point would be if physical died on its own and keycards just filled the void. Sadly if that ever happens it will be because consumers just gave up on physical themselves.
I like physical too, but this is just reality. The only thing you can do is encourage the purchase of physical when offered. So fingers crossed physical doesn't die.
The worst part is you can't even try to have a civil talk about why this kind of slop should not be supported and why copyright does matter.
Because the moment you speak on the side of a company you are a boot licking shill who has absolutely no value. What you have to say or why doesn't matter.
You're not automatically against the corporation so you have sold your soul and are damned to hell ... Or at least they hope you are with every fiber of their being.
The idea that maybe the corporation has a point at least some of the time never crosses their mind.
@axelhander IP law isn't perfect. But things would be way worse without it. You'd have an absolute flood or cheap knock offs, companies themselves could freely just steal indie IPs without consequences or even trying to hide it, and more. This is all worst case stuff if IP law didn't exist at all ... But the point is we do need IP law.
Plus if you seriously want a champion for fair use of IP .... Do better than this trash. If anything this is the best proof of why it's needed as this was just shameless.
@Training see I tried doing search and asking a flyer and the dumb bird just went "IDK where he is" I can try again to see if I missed something but I swear I tried that.
@Eririichi to be fair I've been hearing it less recently. Maybe because eShop deals started to become more common knowledge.
But I just remember steam sales being touted as if eShop didn't have any. Plus even Nintendo exclusive games go on sale more often than people think, sure some specific IPs basically never go on sale.
But even some relatively popular titles like Luigi's mansion 3 has had at least minor sales.
@kobalt they can't stop the slop completely. Not without basically locking out legitimate indie titles.
But they seem to be doing better at least. Now the slop is there but there are enough actual games to make searching worthwhile. Before it was so hard to find even one real game.
@Eririichi maybe SOME mean that but I've seen people talk like you have to go to steam for sales, period.
Some people legitimately think the E-store never has sales. Ive seen people say "Get it on steam, it's on sale there" even if the E-store had the same sale.
@moonblastx I had a feeling that was the case after the Pokemon listed randomly changed a couple times.
Overall I agree. Really the issues with the search function is my biggest complaint. Like yesterday I picked up Cubone's tombstone to move his habitat to a better location ... I did not have him follow me before doing that and COULD NOT find him afterwards. The search function didn't help at all and Pokemon with the literal ability search were all "Gee I have no idea where he is. Too bad". Like what use is a search function if it doesn't guide you to the Pokemon!?! Is it broken or just badly designed?
Again this is only REALLY an issue if they don't have a home since you can use honey to make them spawn at home. But in scenarios where they lose a home the game is NO HELP in finding them. Sometimes you'll find them wandering around their former home wondering where it went. But otherwise you just have to search everywhere.
So my tip for everyone, ALWAYS make a Pokemon follow you BEFORE you break their home. Because search will not help you.
@moonblastx yeah rage baiting or just general toxicity.
I mean is it a perfect game? No. I've run into a few minor complaints. But it's most QOL issues that pop up from time to time. Nothing that would drag it's score down by more than maybe 2 points by even the harshest critique.
For anyone curious the issues I've run into so far.
1. It's unreasonably hard to locate Pokemon that don't have a home. This isn't a problem most of the time as they generally automatically get a home when you meet them. But if you EVER accidentally destroy their home and they aren't nearby ... Every tracking feature in the game weirdly only works if they already have a home. They need to improve tracking.
2. When building actual homes you need the Pokemon to be nearby to help you build it. Which generally requires you to find them, have them follow you, and then WAIT until they slowly trail behind you to the build location. Why can I not just assign whoever is available from the build menu?
I have a few other minor complaints but there at this level or lesser. Again not perfect, but after you get past some frustrating moments you go back to having fun.
Yeah th slop on switch 1 got so bad it was easier to just Google search for games and then search it in the Eshop when I picked something.
But Now I actually look in the Eshop directly. Which is how I learned switch games go on sale more than I thought.and everyone saying Nintendo games NEVER went on sale were full of it. Sure first party games don't often go on sale if ever. But overall you see much of the same deals you see on steam. Steam is still a bit more frequent, but the difference isn't as massive as online sentiment would have you believe.
I think Gen 5's approach was best. The reason it failed was 2 things imo.
1) it was too soon. People didn't feel the need to wipe the slate clean and the desire to always have every Pokemon available was still an absolute trait of the series too that point.
2) Gen 5 was overall disappointing. See if they wanted to really sell the idea of starting from scratch they needed to assemble the best designs they could so people would favor them over the old ones. I'm talking rivals to all of the favorites, like regional or divergent forms now. Charizard, Pikachu, Gardevoir, Dragonite. All of them. The gen 5 we got wasn't awful but some designs did feel lack luster. Like the third dragon ... Wtf was that?
So pulling a gen 5 again could work. Especially with all the fatigue the franchise is suffering from now.
We can't outright abandon the classics but the flagships of the generation really should be the focus. I say this as someone who also just ends up using old favorites anyway.
I don't think it's accurate to say no online when it is getting home.
Either way the fact I will be able to move these Pokemon to home is worth it for me. Especially since I can actually get the event Pokemon without hacking.
It was as good as you could expect a 15 minute indie showcase to be.
Some decent looking indie titles for those that like those genera. Nothing terribly noteworthy ... But it's indie, not every indie game is going to shake the industry.
I'm surprised that train game is coming to switch. I might get that.
With only 15 minutes its probably mostly just updates of prior announcements. Maybe an indie or two not formally announced for switch yet or something.
It's possible there will be a surprise but I'm not expecting anything major at this time.
@Cakefish apparently it's closer to dragon quest builder. But if you never played that then animal crossing+ Minecraft is probably a close enough comparison.
@Elmotus those games are still recent enough the Pokemon data as a whole is still the same or similar enough. The older game simply need ignore any ribons it doesn't have.
But there are times where porting Pokemon too or from games loses information. Home warns you of this when it comes up, generally it's just minor stuff like moves they won't know in a game and thus they'll forget it during the transfer.
But for a game as old as FRLG the difference is far greater. Possibly too the point too much is lost.
Now I guess they could just let Pokemon transfered from FRLG be transferred back in. But either this also has a technical issue or it just didn't seem worth updating home to track that. Or something similar.
Either way most comments seem to be regarding wanting to transfer non FRLG Pokemon into it to complete the national Dex. So that wouldn't satisfy them anyway.
@shoeses the reason trade isn't two way is modern Pokemon has alot of stat and ability changes compared to FRLG and the OG games likely don't even have the ability to keep track of that newer data.
It's possible to update the older data and fill in the gaps with default data when transferring into home. They've done this with other games that lack certain things like abilities.
But if you say ... Tried to take in a Pokemon with a hidden ability into FR and then trade it out. Then it would probably have its default ability instead.
The only way to avoid this would be to make FRLG able to track and store all data on newer Pokemon. But this would require either remaking the game to modernize the Pokemon data completely or it would need to track two entirely different kinds of files without making mistakes.
Neither option is impossible, but would require a fair amount of work.
Considering this is just meant to be a celebration of the series this probably wasn't given the time or budget of a full game, it's just a side project. So that would fall outside the scope.
@shoeses the event tickets are just items. You don't have to revise the game to add them. And the games already had trade function. So they just needed a translation layer on the base game.
Since they weren't made originally with language options in mind the code base is not set up to swap out text with a toggle and adding that isn't as simple as you make it seem.
No they can't just put the language in and make it work. The game needs to be set up so all the text in the game isn't baked into the code but instead pulled from th language file or something to that effect (there are probably other ways to do it). That would require a lot more work if not already set up with that in mind.
@DennisReynolds I expected that. I mean they wouldn't have been able to allow beyond gen 3 and I'd they didn't want to lose information they'd need to make FireRed/leaf green at least retain stat information from later gens.
Honestly it would have been a big mess so I didn't expect full trade.
The original games could only trade with gen 3 games because they were made during gen 3 and didn't really have any extra information.
@AlonditeFE yeah. The fact it's not coming out this year is a pretty good sign.
I'm sure they had planned to release this for this year.
It's pretty much the crown jewel of the announcements they made today. But it's an announcement for a game not even releasing this year?
Plus when did they last announce a Pokemon game this far in advance? I mean officially?
They definitely pushed plans back and while that doesn't mean it won't have ANY flaws, it means they didn't force it out early to meet the anniversary.
Fire red is a great source for some gen 1 and 2 pokemon and we MIGHT even get the event Pokemon like deoxys.
The question about home support made me uncertain so glad it got cleared up
Also I know some won't give up anyway. But this kills any reason to think this should have been an NSO release. There is no chance of a game on NSO linking with Pokemon home. So that feature alone makes that out of the question.
@DashKappei the thing is they weren't wrong. Still saw comments going "Good but not next gen" and other nonsense because they'll complain no matter what.
@AlonditeFE actually that disclaimer is probably mostly due to camera angles.
You see it a lot where even if it's in engine if they manipulated the camera to get cinematic trailer shots they say it doesn't represent in game footage. Because TECHNICALLY SPEAKING you can't get those exact cinematic shots in game.
But it looked pretty much in engine. We've seen fully animated trailers and they generally have a different look to them.
@Kiz3000 time strangers only has 450 models and that includes color variants and duplicates with minor variations and Digimon with fairly simple designs.
The game is also not as open as recent Pokemon games.
Time strangers is quite good but doesn't change my point. It's not even like the models are bad. It's just with well over 1000 completely unique models you should appreciate more how much work goes into all of them.
Obviously it could always be better but that takes even more time and money and there is a point you need to ask if it's worth it or if that time and money would be better used elsewhere.
@Kiz3000 keep in mind we have over 1000 Pokemon. We can only expect so much from each model.
I understand the desire for perfection. But remember other RPGs only deal with dozens of actual models with color and small detail variants to bulk up enemy variety.
@N8tiveT3ch man that's harsh. Gen 3 and 4 starters were up there. Certainly not every gen was full of winners but honestly I like gen 3 and 4 over gen 2 starters.
@Ashina yeah. It's definitely odd it's not released on anniversary year. I can almost guarantee that the game got delayed internally. We just never heard the earlier projected release date.
Which is good they are finally delaying Pokemon projects internally as needed. Otherwise we'd have gotten a buggy version this year with a year of patches until it's in a good state.
Interesting the disgaea universe is getting spin offs.
For anyone not familiar the setting is basically you have "Earth" but you have multiple earth's and each earth has a corresponding demon netherworld.
Each netherworld is treated like its own planet and each of the 7 games in the series so far take place in a different netherworld. But you can also travel between netherworlds easily.
So you can easily make a spin off that uses the setting without it ever interacting with any other game in the series. Continuity isn't an issue as games only reference each other when they want to.
@SirLink Yeah. Considering the average price of games and the number of people who spend hundreds of dollars on skins ... $20 is nothing.
Sure it has no QOL improvements, but if it did then it probably would have been more money.
The average person understands this and will get it if they want to replay the og game.
Hell I don't know if I even want them to make any real changes. Aside from maybe putting the event Pokemon in what else needs adding that wouldn't require remaking the entire game?
@Taro local trade is confirmed and online trade may still be in the cards, just maybe.not at release.
The thing is I see a lot of people acting like they ar treating this like an HD remaster with QOL features. But they said in the interview they only even did this was for fun.
It's just a fun little celebration for now so they probably did this as quickly as possible. Adding features would have taken significantly more time.
Not to mention I'd this did have that much time put into it then it would have cost more and people would still complain. Maybe not you specifically but you get what I mean.
Really I just wish people would relax more and save outrage for more significant things than a $20 port that they don't have to buy.
@Filthy later entries had language options but that doesn't mean you just flip a switch to add it to older games.
Depending on how it's coded that might be a decent bit of work.
As for making a collection or extra features... This isn't a grand rerelease like those. They say it pretty up front it's just as a bit of opening celebration of the series. A way to buy and play the first game ... Or more accurately the remake of the first game.
But this is just meant to be a fun thing to grab. Reworking the code for extra language options or features would have required more time and effort. Which would have raised its price.
Maybe some would prefer that, but that doesn't seem to be what this is meant to be.
@sevex fair. I prefer it as a purchase because if I do get it I don't want to have to maintain NSO expansion to keep it.
And $20 is basically nothing by today's standards. Even a cheap indie game is often $25 to $30 at minimum.
Only things cheaper than $20 without a discount are budget horror titles and shovel ware.
So it's a perfectly reasonable price for a stand alone purchase of a functional port of a gba game on switch. According to the FAQ it also has local trade functionality at least.
Pokemon home compatibility isn't confirmed and was taken off. But the fact it was mistakenly put on might mean it will be implemented later.
Or maybe this is just meant to revisit the past and not tie into the current global trade network.
@sevex they aren't "Charging extra" you are actually buying this game. Rather than only gaining access to it through the Nintendo online virtual shell.
You can not want to buy it but don't just outright lie and talk like this is some extra fee. If they had put this on NSO instead then you or someone else would criticize Nintendo for locking it behind a subscription wall.

Re: Pokémon Winds & Waves Announced For Switch 2, Launching Next Year
@Kiz3000 keep in mind we have over 1000 Pokemon. We can only expect so much from each model.
I understand the desire for perfection. But remember other RPGs only deal with dozens of actual models with color and small detail variants to bulk up enemy variety.
Re: Pokémon Winds & Waves Announced For Switch 2, Launching Next Year
@Hwatt probably won't be grass owl since not only have we already done that but grass owl got a regional variant.
Re: Pokémon Winds & Waves Announced For Switch 2, Launching Next Year
@N8tiveT3ch man that's harsh. Gen 3 and 4 starters were up there. Certainly not every gen was full of winners but honestly I like gen 3 and 4 over gen 2 starters.
Re: Pokémon Winds & Waves Announced For Switch 2, Launching Next Year
@Ashina yeah.
Re: Pokémon Winds & Waves Announced For Switch 2, Launching Next Year
@LuigiDude96 the water in particular looked gorgeous. And if the game engine can handle good water it should be pretty high level.
Re: Disgaea Returns To Switch 1 & 2 This Summer With An Action RPG Twist
Interesting the disgaea universe is getting spin offs.
For anyone not familiar the setting is basically you have "Earth" but you have multiple earth's and each earth has a corresponding demon netherworld.
Each netherworld is treated like its own planet and each of the 7 games in the series so far take place in a different netherworld. But you can also travel between netherworlds easily.
So you can easily make a spin off that uses the setting without it ever interacting with any other game in the series. Continuity isn't an issue as games only reference each other when they want to.
Re: Pokémon FireRed And LeafGreen Are Already "Best Sellers" On The Switch eShop Charts
Re: Pokémon FireRed And LeafGreen Are Already "Best Sellers" On The Switch eShop Charts
@kmtrain83 that has been true for literally everything. It's really not worth mentioning here as if it's a unique case.
If fact if we actually accounted for inflation then this is like selling the games for $10 or less back when it was actually released.
Re: Pokémon FireRed And LeafGreen Are Already "Best Sellers" On The Switch eShop Charts
So home support is confirmed after all? Well that's good and if it's not a mistake that alone gives all the reason to not put it on NSO.
Re: Resident Evil Requiem Leakers Deserve "A Thousand Deaths", Says Hideki Kamiya
I'll be honest... Leaking has gotten out of control.
It used to be just a few snippets and some blurry images that might be fake.
Now it's the title, box art, story, ending, surprises, and more ... All a month or more before release.
And they're shared so aggressively it's near impossible to avoid.
I shouldn't have to filter my settings to avoid game defining spoilers.
Re: Poll: Will You Be Getting Pokémon FireRed Or LeafGreen On Switch?
@justin233 I wouldn't be any more productive with or without this game.
Seriously it's just a casual port for those that want it. Yes it's nostalgia ... That's kind of the point!!!!
Wtf do you think an anniversary celebration is?
Name a single anniversary event that didn't involve nostalgia in at least part of it.
Re: Poll: Will You Be Getting Pokémon FireRed Or LeafGreen On Switch?
Re: Poll: Will You Be Getting Pokémon FireRed Or LeafGreen On Switch?
I have enough nostalgia I'll probably get it. In which case I'll go with FireRed
Re: Poll: What's Your Favourite Gen 9 Pokémon?
I'm noticing a lot more concentration in the votes compared to earlier gens.
Re: PSA: Pokémon FireRed And LeafGreen Switch Preloads Are Now Live
Re: PSA: Pokémon FireRed And LeafGreen Switch Preloads Are Now Live
Re: PSA: Pokémon FireRed And LeafGreen Switch Preloads Are Now Live
@sevex they aren't "Charging extra" you are actually buying this game. Rather than only gaining access to it through the Nintendo online virtual shell.
You can not want to buy it but don't just outright lie and talk like this is some extra fee. If they had put this on NSO instead then you or someone else would criticize Nintendo for locking it behind a subscription wall.
Re: PSA: Pokémon FireRed And LeafGreen Switch Preloads Are Now Live
@ShadLink I know ... But I feel someone has to say something or else the comments are an ocean of unified negativity.
Someone has to speak reason even if it won't make any of these people calm down.
