Re: Video: Digital Foundry's Technical Analysis Of Mortal Kombat 1 On Switch

Manguy888A

I watched a video comparing them and my take away is that neither version is for me. The sound of the bones breaking is just too much for my delicate constitution. I liked the originals when I was a kid but the smaller characters and pixel graphics made ripping someone’s spine out seem comical where here it seems…accurate. No thanks

I’m going on a work trip so I will have a ton of time for airport, plane and hotel gaming. I’ll continue final fantasy 6, I think I’m about halfway through. I’ll probably bring another big rpg I haven’t started like persona 5R and some bite size platformers.

I’ve been obsessed with getting every star and stamp in Super Mario 3D world - I already did it on my Wii U copy and want to do the same on switch. What great challenge. I think 3D world is my favorite 3D Mario game

For me the draw of LotR when I read them as a kid was the descriptions of Shire life, and the sense of adventure as the characters traveled across beautifully described locations. In my mind it was all light-filled natural beauty

Then after the movies came out it seemed like every game was super dark and focused on destroying waves of orcs in the pit of hell and boy that just did not appeal to me at all. I'll welcome anything that reclaims what I liked about LotR

Re: Feature: 'The Art Of Nintendo Power' Exhibit - A Guided Tour

Manguy888A

Long time Nintendo Power fan here who has the first 150 issues - I need to get to this exhibit asap. The clay models specifically are about as nostalgic as nostalgia gets for me. I spent hours poring over these magazines as a kid. It’s hard to explain how exciting they were in a world with no internet and no other way of getting gaming news

I started up Final Fantasy 6 and it already has its claws in me. I’ve been craving an old school RPG and decided I was going to play it the original way and not turn encounters off. I just got to the opera scene.

Also I’m still trying to get in one day in Pikmin 3 with my wife each night.

And I want to continue Twilight Princess HD but it can be hard to play anything not on the switch. I’m on the go a lot and the switch is just so convenient

Re: Poll: What Did You Think Of The Nintendo Direct, Then?

Manguy888A

I’m surprised they didn’t hold warioware or Mario rpg or the peach game from the last direct and debut it today instead. The last few directs felt overstuffed with news and this one felt a bit thin. I’ve got a full pipeline of games I’m excited about so no real complaints, but this direct was definitely the least exciting in at least a year for me

Just beat The Messenger and I don’t know if I’ve ever played a game with tighter controls - the ninja felt like an extension of my body.

I’ll be continuing with Twilight Princess HD when I can get the TV, and my wife and I will be continuing our one day of Pikmin 3 per night.

I may start another platformer as well, but not sure which. Maybe Rayman Legends

@Dark_Isatari I basically didn't play video games between Gamecube and Switch, so to get caught up I have Twilight Princess, Skyward Sword, the DS games and Minish Cap. I already played link between worlds (LOVED IT). I've also never beaten Majora's Mask though I've tried several times. I just find it very difficult, and regularly get lost in the main town even though I've started the game half a dozen times. I'll get thru it someday though.

Unfortunately I had to drop Zelda: Spirit Tracks - I'm trying to be a completist but I just find the DS zelda games to be tedious.

In other Zelda completionist news, I'm playing Twilight Princess HD for the first time - I'm pretty early on and in the Forest Temple. I can see why people regard this game so highly, and it's amazing that if my wife wants the TV I can just press select and play on the gamepad.

When I have some shorter gaming slots I will continue with The Messenger. This game is getting better as it goes, and the controls are just so tight and responsive that you feel like you're one with the character.

Oh and my wife and I have been playing through a day of Pikmin 3 each night. It's a great ritual - she's not really a gamer but has really warmed to Pikmin. Similar to my daughters she throws the controller at me when she gets to a boss.

I'm closing in on the end of Tunic, or rather I think I am - the game is a bit inscrutable and it's easy to miss major parts of it if you're not careful. Sometimes this aspect of the game adds to its mystery, other times it's just frustrating. Also, the bosses are so flipping hard.

Elsewhere, I got a nice new model 3DS XL recently, so I think I'm going to start a game on there, either Dragon Quest VIII or Layton vs Phoenix. I missed the 3DS era the first time around and am loving getting caught up - there are days when I like it more than my switch.

Re: UK Charts: The King Returns As Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Takes The Top Spot

Manguy888A

@EaglyBird It'll be interesting to see and will depend a lot on whether the new switch is backwards compatible. If its not, I would guess everyone with a switch 2 will get Mario Kart 9 (or whatever it's called), same as they did with 8. But if it's backwards compatible they will have to sell gamers on why they need the new one.

I'm a Nintendo obsessive but mario kart is really just in my collection for family get togethers or kid play dates - I'm not sure I would need the new one for that purpose

I started playing Spirit Tracks on vacation but man did I find that game tedious - after playing TotK it’s hard not to find that era of Zelda a bit derivative, and I really struggle with the stylus controls. I’m a bit of a completist though so I’ll probably finish it eventually.

Now that I’m back home with my whole collection, time to complete Tunic - I’m completely gobsmacked by this game.

Re: Talking Point: The Games We Got Rid Of - What Were We Thinking?

Manguy888A

Never got rid of a game but I told my mom to throw away a bag with 50+ NES boxes. She isn’t a hoarder but doesn’t throw stuff away lightly and was hesitant - I insisted she throw it all away. <face palm>. Now I’m a collector and that bag would’ve doubled the value of my collection.

I also threw away all my GameCube boxes during the CD booklet crazy - thought I was saving space. Now I’m considering paying $100 for just the box for Eternal Darkness…

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (August 12th)

Manguy888A

I'm on vacation this week and wanted to focus on family time so I didn't bring the Switch. BUT! I brought exactly one video game thing: my Gameboy Advance SP and a Mother 3 translation cartridge. Figured I'd play a bit at night and start on this game I've wanted to play forever with no other games to distract me away.

Re: Nintendo's New Development Building Reportedly Delayed Due To "Expansion Plan"

Manguy888A

When I was in Japan for work last March I went to Kyoto for the day and saw the headquarters. I was kind of amazed that it was just a series of off-white rectangular buildings plopped into a commercial/industrial neighborhood. It looks like the most boring place on earth, probably by design.

I knew there was nothing at the headquarters for fans - I really just felt like I needed to take the pilgrimage there. But taking the train into Kyoto, and then the subway to nintendo's stop, there was nothing there to indicate that you were nearing the epicenter of one of the world's most beloved brands - not even a tiny mario statue. I read it as part of their more humble culture, but it's probably also to minimize the hubbub and allow everyone to just show up and do their jobs.
