Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (January 13th)

I'm 12 hours into Sea of Stars and unfortunately I'm very close to dropping it. The graphics are unparalleled, but the gameplay itself I find very rote - I'm working my way through it half-asleep it feels like. I don't even mind simple RPG combat that gets repetitive - it tends to soothe me - but the environmental puzzles and traversal requires no thinking. They just click along cleanly, there's no sense of struggle of exploration. Anyway, I'm not one to beat on games, but I was really anticipating this one and am disappointed.

Someone sold their whole switch collection to my local game shop and it's an extensive one - tons of imports, special editions, I even saw a mummy demastered which has been on my list. So my plan this weekend is to see how much $ I can spare to buy up some of these games, and start one of them.

Lately I've felt energized and able to tackle a bunch of life stuff, so I've been gaming less than usual. 2022 and 2023 really were the years of gaming for me, and I think in 2024 it may take a back seat.

This weekend I'll put a few hours into Sea of stars. I hotly anticipated this game and waited until I could get it on cartridge, and now that I'm playing it....I don't know if I like it. The early sections are a little dull from a gameplay perspective, and the writing is pretty poor - just my opinion of course. The graphics, though, are just astounding. Those alone will keep me playing it to see what's next - hopefully the game will pick up.

Re: Poll: Rate Your Favourite Switch Games Of The Year 2023

Manguy888A

Wow - I played a lot of games this year but I guess only a few that released in 2023.

I rated Mario wonder, TotK and Metroid prime the same level of awesome. Tunic was a 10/10 for the first two-thirds then became too obtuse and difficult for me. Happy to say I didn’t play any outright bad games.

Not 2023 related but playing through Luigi’s Mansion with my 8YO daughter was by far my best game experience of the year

I'm on the final hours of Mother 3 and WOW, I am loving this game. It is a little bit easier than Earthbound and a little more on rails, but the story and gameplay are great. I think I might like it better than Earthbound, actually.

If I finish the game this weekend, I have to decide which of the 1,000 backlog games goes up next. I've got Sea of Stars and Star Ocean Second Story coming in the mail from play asia, so I'll probably play a shorter platformer to fill the time. Happy gaming everyone!

I’m probably a third of the way through Mother 3 - I’ve never played it before and I absolutely love it. I’m at one of those old-school hard RPG spots where I keep getting killed and it’s obvious I’ll need to grind and get some better items. Meanwhile I’ll be watching the tracking as castlevania advance collection slowly makes its way to my house.

After about 100 deaths I finally beat the last last LAST level in Mario Wonder. I thought that final level was incredible.

I picked up Super Mario RPG at Best Buy and then promptly went away for the weekend without my switch. I’ve got the game now and it’s staring at me, wondering why it’s not being played…

Professor Layton is something I came to only recently and I absolutely love the vibe, I’d have the whole collection if Azran Legacy wasn’t so absurdly priced.

It seems like a no brainer to bring layton back for a console like the switch with such a huge install base of casuals- I found out just recently that my parents who aren’t gamers at all had played all of the earlier games in the DS days

Like many others I’m working through Super Mario Wonder, trying to go slowly to savor it. I wish it were harder with longer levels, but the level of creativity and polish on this game is unmatched. I guess it’s a curse of playing these games for 35 years that one made for general audiences just isn’t going to be challenging for me.

Separately I’m playing Portal for the first time, and would love to get back into my nightly Pikmin 3 coop with my wife, which has fallen off recently.

I’ve dropped everything to play through Wonder with my daughter. Since she’s younger, how they handle multiplayer coop is super important to whether she’ll have a good time with these types of games or get frustrated and quit. So far the mechanic of one person having the crown and controlling the screen while the other can get lost but floats back as a ghost has worked well. And not being able to bump into each other also lessens the frustration. We’re having a blast

Re: Review: Super Mario Bros. Wonder - The Best 2D Mario Since The Super NES

Manguy888A

@LastFootnote Because of the age I was when I played super mario world there will be no way for me to objectively compare World with Wonder.

I think the bigger issue here is that when SMW came out 2D mario was video games for the most part. It was in the center of video game culture the way alternative bands like Pearl Jam or Nirvana were the center of music culture at that time.

Now a 2D mario game is part of a genre, and very popular but not at the center of video game culture the way TotK or Starfield is. If Pearl Jam put an album out that was objectively better than Ten and Vs, big fans would be excited and tell you all about it, but it wouldn't make a big ripple in the culture. That impact certainly affects how people rate and rank these products against each other

Re: Where To Pre-Order Super Mario Bros. Wonder On Switch

Manguy888A

@its_luke_c you’re right, they never go on sale, but these Mario games sell so highly and sell to casual players and kids so there are always second hand copies available a year or two later. Locally it seems like I can find any first party Nintendo game for between 25-40 on the second hand markets.

My backlog is so big I SHOULD do this with Wonder but I’m just not patient enough

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (October 14th)

Manguy888A

@Grail_Quest thanks! I tried to play without a guide so there were some characters who I could never figure out how to use and never got very strong like Cyan and Gau. I ended up using Terra Edgar and Sabin who all had the strongest attacks for me. Someday I’ll probably play it again and look stuff up to optimize everything

Re: Anniversary: Happy Birthday To Nintendo's Ugliest, Most Indestructible Console

Manguy888A

Oh man, I bought one of these second hand recently for extremely cheap and I love it. It has bite marks from a dog, the screen is scuffed, doesn’t matter - thing still works like new. I gave it to my daughter and she uses it to play Tomodachi life.

Im really anal about my electronics but I don’t care about this thing and it’s a tank. My daughter has dropped it a dozen times to no effect

Re: Talking Point: Would You Buy A Digital-Only 'Switch 2'?

Manguy888A

Not a chance - I have about 70 physical switch games and have gotten a lot of joy out of collecting them. I’ve sold some that I didn’t want anymore, and bought plenty of games second hand from others - both things I wouldn’t be able to do if the games were digital.

It’s surprising that there’s no rule that requires companies to allow consumers to sell their digital games on the open market. if that were law then the two options wouldnt be that different.

if nintendo ever goes all digital i would still play the "big deal" games like mario and zelda - im not made of stone - but would otherwise lose interest in the console

I’m finally closing in on the end of Final Fantasy 6. I’ve moved through the game very smoothly but this end part I’m at has some insanely hard bosses. I’ve been asked to split my party and realized I haven’t kept everyone leveled up properly.

Beyond that I’m trying to prep for Wonder by playing some Mario’s I missed, this weekend it’ll be New Super Mario Bros

Re: Reminder: The 'Mario Red Edition' Switch OLED Is Out Today, Will You Be Getting It?

Manguy888A

I just bought my first OLED second hand last month and got a good price on it. It's the one with white joy cons and I prefer the look of that to the red mario one.

For anyone with the original switch who's never used an OLED - I didn't think I'd care about the differences, but practically everything on the OLED model is better by 5-10% and it adds up to a very impressive handheld that I couldn't recommend more. Even little things like the kick stand, the way the joy cons click into place, it all feels much more solid and substantial

Re: Soapbox: What Do You Do When Nintendo Ticks Off Your ENTIRE Most-Wanted List?

Manguy888A

What doesn’t the switch have?? Honestly if the switch got Chrono trigger and castlevania: sotn I could bring it to a dessert island and play it for the rest of my days…

I’ve also felt spoiled the last few years. I’m a collector and have spent a lot of money on older games like TTYD, but it was never about the value of them, I just wanted access to the games. Nintendo seems more likely than ever to do ports and remakes, and this is giving me the signal to not give in to FOMO on old games and wait for ports. There will be some exceptions (I doubt they’ll ever port Eternal Darkness or other games that go against their brand) but it feels safe to say any game with Mario or link in it will come back to a modern console in some form. That’s a huge win for me.
