Re: Poll: What Review Score Would You Give Super Mario Galaxy + Galaxy 2?

MARl0

Not counting the price, I'd give it an 8/10. Great games that don't play quite as good as the Wii versions due to gyro not working as well as pointer controls. Some nice updated textures, some not so nice.

Add the price into the mix though, and I'd give it a 5/10. Very low effort HD remasters for a super premium price. I expect remake levels of effort for that price.

Re: Opinion: Sonic Racing Crossworlds > Mario Kart World, And It's Not Even Close For Me

MARl0

Hard disagree. Sonic Racing's core handling model doesn't feel nearly as good as Mario Kart's for me. It just never feels good to play in comparison. You can really tell that Nintendo has been perfecting kart racing for over 30 years. Now that doesn't mean that I think Mario Kart World is perfect either mind you. It's not as good as Mario Kart 8. But it's still considerably better than Sonic Racing Crossworlds.

Re: Team Cherry Explains Hollow Knight: Silksong's "Steep Difficulty"

MARl0

The problem is that in a metroidvania game, there is no way to know what is and isn't off the path when the game doesn't communicate it well to the player. This isn't something like Super Metroid where the game very clearly lets the player know "You shouldn't be here." via various means like Samus receiving major heat damage just by entering a room. Silksong is more like "Well this area seems really difficult, but is this the right way to go or not? I can't tell."

And I am still enjoying the game for the most part, but I don't love it (about 18 hours in right now). It just isn't as well designed as the major players in the genre in my opinion.

Re: Review: Operation Night Strikers (Switch) - M2 Does It Again With This Taito-Themed Collection

MARl0

Did they ever offer a control option for Night Striker that doesn't auto center you in the middle of the screen? The Saturn version has that option (and every home port of Space Harrier has it too), and it is way better for playing the game with a game controller. I specifically wanted this collection for Night Striker since it is a GOAT'd game. But without that option, it's not worth it when I can play the Saturn version instead.

Re: Video: At Last! We've Played Hollow Knight: Silksong On Switch 2

MARl0

@NorrinRadd On my LG C3 OLED it only supports 120Hz if I force the console into 1080p resolution in the system settings, or I disable HDR. If you keep the resolution settings to "auto" or "4K" (as you should), it forces the console into 1440p resolution when a game uses 120hz, but then the TV only outputs at 60Hz (even though the game thinks it's 120Hz).

Basically it's broken. Other people have confirmed this as well. It is definitely not an issue with the TVs either. My PS5, Series X, and Steam Deck all work completely fine in 1440p 120Hz HDR on the TV. So it's a bug in the Switch 2 firmware that they need to fix.

Re: Review: Donkey Kong Bananza (Switch 2) - Absolutely Smashing, But Can It Beat Mario Odyssey?

MARl0

@PikminMarioKirby Going from 60 to 30fps is a lot more severe than what Zelda had as far as performance issues go. That's a huge and jarring drop. Especially for a 3D platformer, which Zelda is not. I think it is completely fair to give the game a 9/10 for that alone. Doesn't ruin the game obviously, which is why it is still a 9/10 game. And a reminder that a 9/10 is very very good indeed.

Re: iFixit Performs A Full Teardown Of Nintendo's "P**s-Poor" Pro Controller

MARl0

Calling it piss poor just because fixing it isn't easy is not really accurate. It's piss poor for modding and getting inside it. But the controller itself is astoundingly good in my opinion. And fixes all the issues I had with the Switch 1 pro controller (other than no analog triggers). And it has the best feeling analog sticks I've ever used.

Re: Atari's 'Breakout Beyond' Can Now Be Played In TATE Mode On Switch

MARl0

I can't speak for the Switch version, since I haven't played it. But the PS5 version of the game is basically unplayable because it forces you to use the d-pad or analog stick to play the game. And Breakout just does not work that way. It is mind boggling to me that they didn't add gyro controls, especially because this is literally the team that made Bit.Trip.Beat, which had gyro controls ages ago, which works brilliantly with these types of games.

As of now, the only playable version of Breakout Beyond is the PC version since it supports mouse controls and spinner controls. I have a spinner controller, and it is incredible with Breakout Beyond.

Re: Arcade Archives Is Bringing 'Air Combat 22' To Switch 2

MARl0

@Burning_Spear Higher resolution as in the Switch 2 can output 4K docked or 1080p handheld. It just makes for a cleaner output and more even pixel scaling.

And if it's anything like their recent Ridge Racer port, it will also feature VRR support so that it matches the original arcade version's refresh rate.

Re: Fans Reckon Nintendo Has "Killed" Mario Kart World With Its Latest Update

MARl0

@Rudolf Not true. Nintendo has control over Smash. Period. Also, HAL hasn't been involved in Smash in ages. Not since Melee I believe.

Sakurai is the director, but he is not the owner. That would be like saying Arc System Works is in charge of Dragon Ball FighterZ, when it is clearly Bandai Namco who has complete control of that game, not Arc System Works.

Re: Fans Reckon Nintendo Has "Killed" Mario Kart World With Its Latest Update

MARl0

But anyway, this is the kind of thing that Smash players have been dealing with since Ultimate launched, and Nintendo never fixed it there, so don't expect them to fix it for Mario Kart either. I set my Smash preferences to 4 player free-for-alls with items turned on, but I end up in 1v1 matches without items half the time in that game. Which basically ruined the online for me. Its match making system is completely broken.
