The audio issue is a genuine problem that I feel is more than worth complaining about. Bad emulation in a commercial product is never okay and needs to be addressed. The other stuff is just silly.
That said, I'm seeing a lot of people here trying to trivialize the audio issue, and that is not how to handle stuff like this. Grow up and admit when a publisher messes up. Defending bad practices just leads to more bad practices. Just because it doesn't bother you personally, doesn't mean it's not a real problem.
I really don't like TotK's building mechanic—it's tedious and never felt fun to me. I also don't enjoy exploring the depths—it's more annoying than it is fun. And the sky islands are nearly all copy and pastes of each other. And lastly, exploration of the main overworld is so trivialized by your ability to fly/glide your way around it. That also makes its sense of scale feel so much smaller than it is.
TotK absolutely does do a lot of things better. The story, bosses, and big set piece moments are all way better. But that isn't enough to make it a better game in my opinion.
Even though I absolutely hate the frame rate problems in the remake, I still have to go with that version since it dramatically reduces the frequency that you need to go into the menu to swap equipment.
Bummer! I was also looking forward to this game. Will probably skip it now, but I'll keep an eye on other reviews to see what the overall consensus is.
I feel like the presentation loses something with this version. I loved that the original games had the characters standing next to or operating an intricate machine that fires the bubbles. This version just has them standing in the middle throwing the bubbles up themselves. Obviously the gameplay is most important, but some of the charm is lost here.
@Friendly The problem is that I've been playing the game for many hours and haven't encountered that yet. So that doesn't change my experience. Sure you could stumble upon something like that early, but the odds of that happening aren't good given the size of the game.
As of right now, probably an 8 or 9 out of 10. Really enjoying the game, but some of the mechanics I'm not really digging. The building feels more like a chore honestly. And I get sick of having to create the same stuff all the time.
I also think the sky navigation kind of trivializes a lot of the exploration since you can just fly/glide to your destination much of the time. It was a similar feeling I had in Xenoblade X once you get the mechs, only that feeling occurs much sooner in TotK.
Again, still really enjoying it. An 8 out of 10 still means that it's good in my opinion! But so far I don't like it as much as Breath of the Wild.
It's better, but it's still not great. The kerning is pretty bad at times, which makes it hard to read.
I still think the font gets way too much coverage compared to the much worse problem that is the choppy scrolling. It's frustrating seeing the font dominate the discussion regarding the problems with these remakes when it's not even the biggest issue.
This might be the worst retro game collection ever released on a console. Not in the quality of the games, but the quality of the emulation/presentation. Forced stretched 16:9 is beyond insane. It defies all logic.
@Discostew It bothers me that almost no reviews are mentioning it either. It's a major issue with these versions, and so many people are going to dive into these without knowing about it before hand. I absolutely get that a lot of people don't care about stuttering, but the information should be covered in the reviews so people who do care can be informed. The stuttering is a much worse issue than the font ever was.
Sadly, the choppy scrolling is a deal breaker for me on the console versions. Luckily that can be fixed on the PC versions with a 120hz display and some easy modding. I really wanted to play these on my Switch, but that's just not an option for me since choppy scrolling really bothers me.
It's long past due for him to talk. Silent protagonists just come off as really awkward in modern games that have the rest of the cast speak. It just comes off like they have a disability, which would be fine if they actually addressed that, but they don't at all.
@Switch_Pro Can't say I agree. It's Bayonetta, of course it's largely marketed to Bayonetta fans. Otherwise they would have used a new IP for the game. That's how marketing works. Naturally they're also trying to get other gamers on board with this as well, but there is no reality where the marketing team isn't primarily targeting existing Bayonetta fans with this game.
Finally a Kirby game (outside of the NES/SNES games) on Switch that runs at 60fps! Loved this game on the Wii, so I'm really looking forward to revisiting it here.
@nkarafo I would also like to know this. The BS final boss in the first game was insanely and stupidly hard. And that wasn't even the worst part. The final dungeon also had zero save points, so you had to redo the entire thing again if you fail (and you will) against the final boss. If the sequel has the same problem, I'm out.
An easy 10/10 from me. One of the best games of all time just got even better. Yes, there are a few very minor missing effects, but they added so much more. And the fact that they took a 2002 game and some how made it the best looking and running game on the Switch in 2023 is beyond insane.
I played the demo on my Steam Deck yesterday, and it was really good so far! Only issue I ran into was an unfortunate moment where I was in a cutscene, and a random enemy started attacking me while I was locked into the cutscene, causing almost all my health to disappear and nearly killed me by the end of the scene. Very odd bug that will hopefully be fixed by the final release.
@tofuman86 It is key framed animation. Think Guilty Gear Strive or the cutscenes from Hi-Fi Rush, only in 2D. Or just compare it to most classic 2D games. Super Mario World only has so many frames of animation for Mario, but the game runs at 60fps. Same thing here. It's a better approach than the Flash-like "tweening" that a lot of other 2D games use these days.
I've always thought it should return. And yeah, it was absolutely a flawed experience. But it was also still the most fun I've ever had with a story/single player mode in a fighting game. And it was even more fun with multiplayer co-op!
I wouldn't change anything. It was perfect as is. I loved the loop of always improvising by using whatever I could find in the environment as a weapon. It forced that kind of play style, and it was awesome.
Very good game. I played it on my Steam Deck last year, and it is indeed one of the best shmups of 2022. Though my personal favorite new shmup of 2022 was Andro Dunos 2.
If it has rumble, gyro, and can wake up the Switch with its home button, I'll give it a go. Without those features, then it's a pass. I saw someone above post an image that seemed to confirm gyro and rumble, but I can't find any of that info from an official source on their website or the product page, so I don't buy it. Those are major features, and if you don't mention them in the product description, then I don't believe that they're part of the product. And if they are, it's extremely baffling that they wouldn't mention them, so that in itself is a concern.
Also, there needs to be a definitive version of this game. After all these years, there still isn't a definitive way to play Skies of Arcadia. You either play the Dreamcast version for the vastly superior audio, or you play the GCN version for the extra content and slightly upgraded character models but you're stuck with awful compressed audio.
I've caught some footage of the game on Youtube, and it seems to run at only 30fps now? The previous game was 60fps on Switch. What the heck happened? That's a huge performance drop for a sequel with the same visual style like this.
I have the PS5 version, and I'm shocked by how poorly it runs on that console. Looks like it's just under 1080p, it has extremely long loading times (by far the longest I've ever seen on PS5), and the frame rate drops. It's hard to imagine the Switch version runs smoothly.
The loading times absolutely killed Touhou Spell Bubble for me. So bad that it just made me never want to play it. Hopefully this game doesn't suffer from that problem.
@steely_pete It doesn't matter who did the port. Nintendo was involved because it includes their IP. That's why it was censored. If it was strictly an SMT Atlus game, Nintendo wouldn't have touched it with censoring. They would have done the same with Mario + Rabbids if that game included material they would censor. Doesn't matter that Ubisoft developed and published the game.
@steely_pete Doubt it regarding Tokyo Mirage Sessions. That game was censored because Nintendo was directly involved with the game. Nintendo doesn't censor third party games (and really hasn't since the early 90s), but when it comes to their own games, they often do.
Gamefreak really needs to hire some new developers. The old guard at the company clearly don't know what they're doing from a technical standpoint. A billion dollar franchise like Pokemon deserves better.
Sadly this falls right in line with what I expected from Sonic. I honestly don't know if it's even possible for a great 3D Sonic game to be developed. And no, none of the previous 3D Sonic games have been great. Neither of the Adventure games, not Generations, none of them. Average is the best they've ever gotten with 3D Sonic.
