Bah! Why did this have to release right after Elden Ring!? I want to play this game, but I'm way too invested in Elden Ring right now to touch anything else for awhile.
Finished this game on Switch about a week ago. It was...okay. Basically zero strategy to the gameplay itself. It does have a weapon triangle like Fire Emblem, but in practice it's basically inconsequential when all you have to do is just send out as many units as possible. It's a pretty brain dead experience strictly from a gameplay standpoint. If you're just in it for the fan service, then it's got that at least.
It's depressing seeing this climb the eShop best sellers list. Last I looked it was at number 14 in the rankings here in the US. Expect to see more of this in the future from SquareEnix.
Kind of wish they'd push the release date back since it's so soon since the first game. I only just finished the first game about a month ago and I'm busy with Pokemon and later this month Elden Ring. Still, the first game was excellent, so I will play this eventually.
Incredible game, and yes, great sales success in the context of the series. That said, I agree that it's also disappointing to continue to see Metroid underperform in comparison to Nintendo's other big franchises. Which has always saddened me considering I feel that Metroid is Nintendo's best IP in terms of game quality. With Other M being the only real low point in over 30 years.
This interview was so damn insulting. So much so, that it has convinced me to skip the Mario + Rabbids sequel that's coming up. The original was the only Ubisoft game I've enjoyed in the last decade. But screw them. Until they commit to dropping NFTs entirely, they've lost me as a customer.
The camera can be a real problem with this game. Having a solid grasp of your position and the play space around you is vital in shmups, and this is the first one I've played in a long time that really feels like it screws that up. I feel like the score should have been dropped a couple more points just based on that alone.
Thought it looked great in the screen shots, but after watching the trailer, not so much. A lot of the animation, both enemies and the play character, look really off. Will definitely have to wait and see on reviews.
I loved Cotton Reboot, so I was looking forward to these before they released. But the input lag issues made me decide to pass on them. If they actually make good on this fix, then I will buy them as soon as they are confirmed to be fixed.
Not surprised about the performance issues. I saw a preview video of it, and the frame rate was all over the place. Seriously bad stuff. And that is an instant killer for me with 2D action games/platformers.
I actually just finished this and all the DLC a couple weeks ago. I agree with the review for the most part. But I would add one additional thing to the cons list. The backgrounds in the main game are super low budget and bad looking. Like poorly photoshopped photos. The sequel DLC's budget is significantly improved in that regard.
Thankfully it's a turn-based RPG, so the frame rate didn't really affect my overall enjoyment of the game. It's still RPG of the year in my opinion, and my runner up for game of the year overall after Metroid Dread.
That said, the frame rate is absolutely abysmal in the game. Seeing some people here try to downplay it as "a few frames here or there" is so disingenuous it's embarrassing. It is what it is. Lying about it doesn't change that.
Glad I went with the PS5 version, as there have been zero random pauses or slow down. I'm really sensitive to that stuff, so that would have bothered me a lot for a game like this.
I'm almost tempted to buy this on PS4/5 just because I don't want to wait for the Switch release. I have the original on Xbox 360, but I haven't had my 360 hooked up in ages. I need my Deathsmiles fix!
If it's a racing game, action game, fighting game, first-person shooter, side scrolling platformer, etc. Frame rate matters to me. A lot.
If it's a slower paced adventure game (like Breath of the Wild), a turn-based RPG, or something chill like Animal Crossing, bad frame rates don't bother me so much.
@UglyCasanova I've put almost 800 hours into Ultimate using my white GCN controller, and it still looks pristine. It's not hard to keep your hands clean...
This game is incredible. Easily Vanillaware's best game (as someone who has been playing their games since Odin Sphere's PS2 release). It's also the best story of any game released in 2020.
@JoeSooper This is what I came here for. How is the Switch port? That's a huge factor in a review like this for a game that's already well known for its quality.
Definitely agree with this review. Dr. Mario has never been good in my opinion. And it's endlessly frustrating to see Nintendo continue to favor it over their much better puzzle franchise Puzzle League/Panel de Pon.
@Meteoroid Yes, that's why I said "This style" of chibi art doesn't work in 3D. There are plenty of great examples of chibi art in 3D that is excellent.
Definitely agree regarding the art style. It's such a downgrade over the original. This style of chibi characters works wonderfully in pixel art form, but when directly translated to 3D, it just doesn't work anymore. They should have gone with the visual style of Let's Go's character models.
I prefer to use untalented or apathetic devs/publishers. When you release something like the ActRaiser remake, and it has incredibly stuttery scrolling in the action stages due to a 50fps camera bug. That's a problem that any competent or caring developer/publisher would have immediately noticed and ensured was fixed before launch. You don't release a broken product like that with people who care behind the wheel.
I was never a fan of this game. Yoshi's Island was one of my all time favorite SNES games. So I bought this game on day one at the time, and boy was it a disappointment! Shockingly bad compared to its predecessor. In a vacuum, one could make a case for the game being decent, but as a follow up to one of the greatest platformers of all time, it was beyond disappointing.
This game is phenomenal. And the port is perfect, which is sadly not a given with retro styled games like this on the Switch (Ion Fury and Project Warlock being examples of how not to do it).
Yeesh, it's crazy just how sensitive some people get over articles like this. Lists like this are just for fun, and aren't meant to be definitive. Nobody could ever create one that everyone agrees on.

Amazing game. But definitely not the best the series has to offer when F-Zero GX exists.

I'd argue that REmake is way scarier than Eternal Darkness. Eternal Darkness had an incredible story, but it wasn't really scary.
