If it's a racing game, action game, fighting game, first-person shooter, side scrolling platformer, etc. Frame rate matters to me. A lot.
If it's a slower paced adventure game (like Breath of the Wild), a turn-based RPG, or something chill like Animal Crossing, bad frame rates don't bother me so much.
@UglyCasanova I've put almost 800 hours into Ultimate using my white GCN controller, and it still looks pristine. It's not hard to keep your hands clean...
This game is incredible. Easily Vanillaware's best game (as someone who has been playing their games since Odin Sphere's PS2 release). It's also the best story of any game released in 2020.
@JoeSooper This is what I came here for. How is the Switch port? That's a huge factor in a review like this for a game that's already well known for its quality.
Definitely agree with this review. Dr. Mario has never been good in my opinion. And it's endlessly frustrating to see Nintendo continue to favor it over their much better puzzle franchise Puzzle League/Panel de Pon.
@Meteoroid Yes, that's why I said "This style" of chibi art doesn't work in 3D. There are plenty of great examples of chibi art in 3D that is excellent.
Definitely agree regarding the art style. It's such a downgrade over the original. This style of chibi characters works wonderfully in pixel art form, but when directly translated to 3D, it just doesn't work anymore. They should have gone with the visual style of Let's Go's character models.
I prefer to use untalented or apathetic devs/publishers. When you release something like the ActRaiser remake, and it has incredibly stuttery scrolling in the action stages due to a 50fps camera bug. That's a problem that any competent or caring developer/publisher would have immediately noticed and ensured was fixed before launch. You don't release a broken product like that with people who care behind the wheel.
I was never a fan of this game. Yoshi's Island was one of my all time favorite SNES games. So I bought this game on day one at the time, and boy was it a disappointment! Shockingly bad compared to its predecessor. In a vacuum, one could make a case for the game being decent, but as a follow up to one of the greatest platformers of all time, it was beyond disappointing.
This game is phenomenal. And the port is perfect, which is sadly not a given with retro styled games like this on the Switch (Ion Fury and Project Warlock being examples of how not to do it).
Yeesh, it's crazy just how sensitive some people get over articles like this. Lists like this are just for fun, and aren't meant to be definitive. Nobody could ever create one that everyone agrees on.
@SwitchForce Holy crap man, at no point does he even insinuate any of the things you're accusing him of. Take a step back and actually pay attention to what he is saying. If anything, he's saying the opposite of what you're accusing him of.
Phantasy Star IV is easily the best game on the list so far. Don't sleep on that game if you haven't played it yet. One of the best RPGs of the 16bit era. It's up there with the likes of Final Fantasy 6 and Chrono Trigger.
@imgrowinglegs For me it was selecting things in the environment only worked half the time. It was common to have to press the confirm button 2 or 3 times before it actually worked (they have since fixed that in patch updates).
The other issue was that there was an incredibly easy to encounter soft lock within the first 30 minutes of the game. I hadn't saved yet, and I had to start a completely new game again because of it. It was where you talk to that girl in your apartment building. After she left and went into her own apartment, her dialog prompt would show up again even though she wasn't there anymore. Selecting it would start the sequence with her again, but the game would soft lock part way through it.
@Ocaz It's more like Monkey Island than Fallout. It's basically a point and click adventure that uses dice rolls to determine the outcomes of your actions/decisions.
Metroid Dread isn't a good enough name for this game. It should have been called Metroid HYPE!!
-ahem- Lame jokes aside, I'm really am hyped for the game. My favorite gaming franchise is finally getting the sequel to the mainline story I've been waiting almost two decades for!
Every person who posts in the comments here is secretly going to buy the game. Including the person right above, right below, and you who are reading this comment! @_@
Wow, that's disappointing. I have such fond memories of the first two games on the GCN. I was really looking forward to this! Now I may have to wait for a sale.
I absolutely loved this game back in the day. I got it day one, and played the heck out of it. It's a bit of a shame that it doesn't hold up super well today because it only runs at 20fps, but it's still a fun ride to bust out every now and then.
That said, I feel that it must be said that Wave Race Blue Storm on the Gamecube is soooo much better. That game is a masterpiece.
The frame pacing for the horizontal scrolling in the action levels is so bad. It bothered me immediately upon playing it.
I also strongly recommend that everyone turn off the environmental effects option, because the frame rate is abysmal with it turned on.
A shame that the visuals are so bad as well. The first level in particular reaches insane levels of ugliness. Thankfully later levels come out looking better.
Luna Nights is so good on the Switch (their previous game), so I'm really looking forward to this. A real shame Nintendo Life never bothered to review Luna Nights for some reason (very odd considering how good it is).

Re: Review: BloodRayne ReVamped - A Joyless, Frustrating Port That Shows How Far We've Come
The only good game in this series is the 2D one that WayForward did. Which you can also get on Switch. So just play that.

It's a bummer that they didn't drop the idea of adding worse visuals and terrible performance and camera bugs to the game...

Re: Feature: The Scariest Game On Every Nintendo Home Console
I'd argue that REmake is way scarier than Eternal Darkness. Eternal Darkness had an incredible story, but it wasn't really scary.
Re: Sony's Censors Strike As Switch Gets '20 Ladies' While PS4 Gets '20 Bunnies'

I'm playing Mass Effect Legendary Edition on my Series X. Holds up shockingly well at 4K 120fps and super fast loading times.

Phantasy Star IV should have been in the top 3. That game is hella good.

@Franklin These are Genesis games. Not Dreamcast games.
Re: Poll: What Do You Think Of The Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack Price?
It's legit absurd that they're asking for more than double the price for it.

@Zuljaras A self fulling prophecy!?

Interesting that it seems...good on Switch? The PS5 version was an epic train wreck when it launched. One of the most broken games I've ever played.

Re: Rumour: Konami Reportedly Reviving Castlevania, Metal Gear Solid, And Silent Hill
Really worried about another reimagining of Castlevania. I did like the Lords of Shadow games, but I also really want that 1999 game!
Re: Review: Castlevania Advance Collection - Utterly Essential Thanks To Aria Of Sorrow
@Themagusx1 Nice "I know you are but what am I!!?" comeback. XD
Grow up edge lord.
Re: Review: Castlevania Advance Collection - Utterly Essential Thanks To Aria Of Sorrow
@Themagusx1 Nah, Vampire Killer is awful.
But continue to be the edge lord you seem to think you are by making baseless assumptions about people you don't know.
Re: Review: Castlevania Advance Collection - Utterly Essential Thanks To Aria Of Sorrow
@Themagusx1 Vampire Killer wasn't a port of the original Castlevania. It was developed at the same time and is a completely different game.
Re: Review: Castlevania Advance Collection - Utterly Essential Thanks To Aria Of Sorrow
Yeah, Aria really carries this collection. It's a legit masterpiece.
HoD is good, but not great. CotM is below average. And Dracula X is decent, but not nearly as good as the original Rondo.

Re: Cult GameCube Shmup 'Castle of Shikigami 2' Is Headed To Switch This December
A shame that they likely won't retain the legendary dub for the game. Absolutely incredible meme worthy stuff in the PS2 original.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (September 25th)
Tales of Arise and Phantasy Star IV. Both are absolutely fantastic!
