I've been so disappointed with this series for so long that I just can't muster up any excitement for it anymore. Yoshi's Island is one of the best platformers ever made. A genuine masterpiece. And ever since, this series has been nothing but disappointments outside of Woolly World (and even that game wasn't as good as the SNES game). This one just looks like another disappointment to me unfortunately, and this preview only reinforced that feeling.
I've never really been a big fan of this series. They're...okay. The best part is honestly the crazy cosmic horror stuff that they turn into by the end.
I'm unsure if I'll get it at all, but if I do, it'll be on my PS5 Pro. I tried the Switch 2 demo, and it was rough. The frame rate was all over the place.
I'm still worried about the hacking mini game getting stale over time. Even during the demo, it started feeling like a fun twist on combat, but by the end it started to feel like it was already overstaying its welcome.
Based on how the first movie was, that's about what I'd expect. Fun for the references and to just see these characters in a big budget movie. But absolutely paper thin story with bad pacing.
Nah, it would have leaked before the movie released anyway. And even if it didn't, it would have within minutes of the first showings. So unless you were there for day one, showing one, and completely unplugged from the internet until you saw the movie, you have been spoiled anyway.
Nothing will get me to return to this game honestly. I did finish it, but the challenge stopped being fun once you reach act 3. There's a point where too much challenge becomes a detriment to a game's enjoyment, and Silksong crosses that line.
30–40fps range isn't what I'd call in good shape. Why is it so difficult for developers to understand that frame rate caps are a thing and that unlocked frame rates are abysmal, especially at low frame rates like this and on a device that doesn't support VRR in docked mode. And the VRR in handheld isn't going to work right at frame rates that low unless proper low frame rate compensation is implemented (and lets be real, Fromsoft isn't doing that).
I actually saw someone on Twitter respond to this by saying "This is why I hate unions." Imagine being that ignorant about what is happening here and thinking that it's the union that is the problem here and not the corporation. Just astonishing lack of education regarding what unions do.
Still have my original copy, so very much not for me. Honestly, I wouldn't pay the asking price anyway with how little effort went into this one. They really should have sold this as a collection that includes the original Game Boy versions. Included an art gallery and sound test. Among other things.
Depends entirely on what their final evolutions look like. Their base form is something I will see for like a couple hours at most and then they'll evolve.
Can't support this one since I already played through the original release and was super annoyed that they announced this version only a few weeks (literally) after the western release of the original version. Ys is one of my favorite gaming franchises, but I definitely will not be buying Ys 11 when it releases and will be waiting a year or two after it releases before I feel that it's "safe" to buy it.
I just had a race in this game where I clearly crossed the finished line in first place by about half a car length, and not only did the game give the CPU racer the same time as me, but it also awarded them the 1st-place victory over me. womp womp
The game is also advertised as having a 4K mode at 60fps and a 120fps mode at 1080p, and yet there is no graphics option at all in the game (it defaults to the 120fps mode).
I couldn't get into this game when it released because there was so much auto advancing text in it that progressed too quickly for me to read. And I just got fed up with it and dropped the game.
The biggest problems are poor project management and over promising when it comes to release dates/windows. And always build a comfortable buffer into your release date if you absolutely have to go public with it. If your game has a specific date planned that you've announced to the public, you better damn well feel confident that your game will be ready to ship well in advance of that date to account for any unexpected hurdles. And if your game gets delayed by a year or more, you should be firing your project manager.
Only played it on PS4 and PS5, and I would rate the game a solid 7/10. It's a solid game that is held back by some intense padding and some combat issues.
Agree with this review. It's the most underwhelming Switch 2 upgrade so far from Nintendo, by far. The games that got free updates are more substantial than this.
When the prices were announced for the console and the games, I knew a quick launch and sharp drop in sales after a while would be inevitable. The hardcore fans always buy at launch, and having actual stock available at retail is the main reason for it having the fastest launch in history. Realistically, previous title holders (like PS4) would have done just as well or better if they actually had more consoles available in stores to purchase at the time. But the biggest fans have their console now and the real battle begins for the rest of the gamers (and parents who buy for their kids). And $450–500 for the console and $70–80 games are a tough pill to swallow. Nintendo has an uphill battle at this point.
Not surprising considering every store that sells video games had stacks and stacks of Switch 2s throughout the entire holiday season in my area as they struggled to move them. Best Buy was even putting them on sale routinely, which is just not something you see for a brand new console in its first holiday season. It's similar to what happened with the Wii U. Explosive numbers at launch, only to slow down shortly after. And yes, I'm aware that it isn't nearly on the level of what happened to the Wii U (not even close), but it's a similar trend, just on a different scale.
It's crazy just how much Nintendo has changed in the last couple years regarding censorship. They used to be the least censored console on the market for most of the Switch's life span. With Sony routinely censoring games that were not censored on Switch. And now they've swapped places. So disappointing.
@ShadLink It would seem that you're the one showing your bias. Showing the input lag difference between PS5, Switch, and Switch 2 is a completely fair comparison since input lag is not something that the PS5 is "better" at than the Switch or the Switch 2. In fact, the PS5 is infamous for having terrible input lag with many games due to its development tools (not the hardware itself). Just ask Mortal Kombat fans about that 110ms input lag in the Legacy Kollection that recently released that was worse than the even Switch 1's input lag in that same game when it launched.
@Sirko The Switch 2 does not support VRR in docked mode. Only handheld mode. So a 50fps option makes no sense for docked play. 40fps though is doable with 120Hz mode.
Sadly, I don't think this will change much for the consumer in the end. It'll just mean extra money in the pocket of the publishers for the few that actually decide on a non key card release, and most publishers will still release their stuff on key cards regardless.
Given the wretched state that this collection is in, it's honestly disappointing to see it sell so well. It really sends the wrong message to SquareEnix that this is okay.
R-Type III is an incredible game! Still have my old SNES copy of the game, and just did a play through again about a year ago. Easily one of the best in the series.
Honestly hard to say if this is a good or bad thing for the gaming division. WB has historically been a terrible publisher. Most recently cutting off all support for Mortal Kombat 1 when it should have gotten at least another season. And they've done that with previous games in the series as well. But then Netflix could very likely be just as bad or worse.
@Tom-Massey Given the type of release and type of game this is, I do strongly recommend mentioning input lag, even if you didn't experience it as an issue. It will always be a question by the audience this is tailored to, so when there aren't any input lag issues, it's important to say that in the review just as much as if there were input lag issues.
This game is a masterpiece. Though I personally think it looks far better at its original native resolution, since that's how its visual and art design was intended. I'll stick to my original copy as a result. But for anyone who hasn't played it yet, this should still be a solid version to start with.

Nice, the sooner the better since I can't go to the theater anymore. I always need to wait for the home release.
