Kirby's Pinball is great. I actually spent part of this year beating my brother's childhood score in that game and had fun doing so. I finally beat it after ALL THESE YEARS. Haha
I REALLY wish Nintendo would bring back their retro NSO icons. I missed out getting them when they happened and now they never return. I keep hoping they'll just add them again but have yet to see them come back
I'm a fan of the Style Savvy series on 3DS. All the games are great with the later ones even adding more amazing features like cute amiibo items and being able to draw and design your own clothes.
However what really made the games special was the game world. A fun sense of humor, friends and rivals, and a sense of community in the world. That charm is all gone in this version. It's just about unlocking clothes and slapping them on folks with not much else.
This game was a very disappointing purchase. Dressing up characters IS fun but without the rest of the Style Savvy charm, it feels more hollow and I've lost interest already. There used to be more management also that made purchases thoughtful and variety essential in your shop. There may be those who still will enjoy it as an beefy doll dress up game but for those who loved the original Style Savvy game, keep expectations lower.
Hopefully whatever money SynSophia makes on this us used on a more faithful follow up.
"There's no deeper thought behind this than the idea that if you were to inflate a Minion and dip it in pink dye, you wouldn't be a million miles away from Kirby."
What a horrible thing to say lol...
Also I'm honestly not into the idea of a game media verse. So I hope not. Kirby animated shorts in a similar style to the official Twitter art would probably be best for Kirby if it were forced to get some kind of media.
No one is saying the movie has to be Citizen Kane but it can still be a better movie. That's not a wild demand. lol We CAN have our cake and eat it too.
The newest Puss in Boots movie was actually really good even tho it's aimed at kids. Writing was pretry good and ending was satisfying. It's no Citizen Kane but it doesn't need to be. Just should AT LEAST show Some effort in the writing department as it does to stuffing references of powers ups.
It's wild Ppl think kids don't deserve thoughtful entertainment or that family movies can't be artistic. Miyazaki films say "hello"
@RubyCarbuncle I mean I've enjoyed Mario since the NES as well but I'm still hoping for a good fun movie over just "Hey check it out, it's a blue shell!"
If I want references I can also just play the games. With a movie, I want to watch something. Just hoping that part is also fun.
I don't really like the constant "THE REFERENCES" thing going on. It's pretty corny. Like that's NICE and it's neat but I want it to be a movie experience and not just a test in nerdom.
This does NOT mean I don't appreciate the Mario celebrations. I love there are references BUT I hope people also have more to say about it as a film.
I like 3 the most of the ones I've played. I get it's old and doesn't have all the bells and whistles of new games but whatever. That's the disadvantage old games have. They're old so automatically -100 points. Even if they were one of the most influential games in history and still a pretty charming and fun game. I think it's okay to like older games for their impact and if they're still overall solid. So imo that one still is a top tier game.
@handyboots I'm a big Kirby fan since the original game and I totally get the flack around Star Allies. LOL It's like eating food that looks great, has everything you love, but you bite into it and it's missing... something. I thought it was FINE. Competently made with stunning music and graphics. Just hard to say I loved it nearly as much as any of the other recent titles.
I voted SNES just for Earthbound, Kirby Super Star, and Super Metroid alone
I wonder if Earthbound and Super Star count, since maybe they are more considered 2nd party?
Also I feel like Switch is now the strongest console and offers these classics as well but SNES... well, it's the SNES. It's a strong historic console and those titles and their impact can't be beat for me.
It's too bad the extra mode isn't available from the start. I get it's a cute throw back to the original Dreamland game on gameboy BUT still would have been nice. Still I suppose I'll be thoroughly playing this game anyway. I'm very excited about the challenge rooms returning from the first game. Trying to score platinum medals in those challenges was intense. I'm sure I'll also enjoy the mini games with my friends too.
Also HAL Labs works on Kirby. They don't work or make F-Zero or Mario. Mother was Ape Inc creatively leading those games with HAL helping with programing. Not gonna get Mother 4 from them.
Tbh I personally wish they didn't use celebrity actors. I get why they do but for me personally, I just hear the actor. I would have preferred character actors.
3 Awards for Kirby and the Forgotten Land!! Awesome. The game really is amazing.
This must be so great for the devs at HAL. They had to be careful and develop 3D for Kirby, behind the scenes for years until they felt they had it. Even with the confidence growing to do it, they felt making a 3D game was a risk. Some at HAL didn't even think it possible. The directors were afraid if they messed it up they wouldn't be able to attempt 3D again soon after.
Do all this positive attention must be great. They succeeded!
I'm hoping to see more additions to the Adventure mode tbh. All the mini game additions are great for the multiplayer aspect of the game. Still I'm hoping for unlocked Extra mode or revamped Extra mode. Maybe a secret additional boss/es or area/level. Be amazing if they included the content from the 20th Dream Collection also. Keeping expectations low but they have added enough to make it interesting.
I REALLY wish Nintendo ported this to Switch. When it wasn't in that HD collection, I was so disappointed. Galaxy 2 is my favorite of the 3D Mario games for how non stop it is with ideas. Every other level felt like something new. It was excitement from beginning to end. I would have loved to see it in HD. WHY NINTENDO!?
@Dom_31 City Trial mode alone provided so many hours of fun that it just doesn't matter to me that I played the other modes less. If someone designed a game that I got THAT much fun out of and could STILL play then that mode alone is worth the whole package. I was still getting my money's and time's worth.
There were games with more modes I've played less than Air Ride.
City Trial is definitely the star of Air Ride and everything else feels like bonus to mess with. As much as people want to say it like it's a bad thing, City Trial being memorable and celebrated is for good reason. For all the issues Air Ride may have had with development and some execution, the core experience of City Trial plays into a strength Sakurai and HAL devs had for multiplayer experiences like that. Much like Kid Icarus' online mode and rounds of Smash Brothers, City Trial distinctly has that "HAVE TO GO ONE MORE ROUND" fun feeling. Especially when played with others. There's just something fun about the variety packed into one map, that created different scenarios every play through.
On a list of top 100 games voted in Japan, Sakurai directed games like Air Ride, Smash Brothers, Super Star made the list. People still play Air Ride till this day competitively. There's something in the core of that game worth understanding from a game design stand point.
ASLO just so people know there is an online community for playing Air Ride. Try checking out their discord. I know access to the game is limited now and there was never any online but this could be an option for folks.
I finished this game today. I didn't beat the true final boss because the performance on Switch is pretty brutal and combined with the boss being huge, it's wasn't worth it for me.
On top of that there are performance dips all over the place, textures that sometimes don't load and even effect the menu. In a couple of instances there was intense flickering that really hurt my eyes.
I have decent fun with the core game but overall it's a budget Souls title that also preforms worse on Switch. I do not recommend this version.
Kirby and the Forgotten Land Splatoon 3 Pokemon Arceus TMNT Shredders Revenge
Haven't played XC3 since I lost interest in the franchise after X so won't comment on it or other jrpgs I skipped this year. Live a Live was the one I was most interested in but I'm waiting to play that.
Team Sweet all the way. I like spicy food too but can't have them anymore due to medical reasons. However, I've always had a sweet tooth. Also it would be nice for Fyre to have a win. I really like her.
It's the Statue from the bonus stage in Star Allies that you see by going into a a big Gameboy. You play through a Gameboy green/grey color variant stage from the original Dreamland. When you get to this statue it comes out of the ground and (I believe) Green Greens plays from your Joy-Con controllers which is super cute and neat. I haven't seen a use of the control speakers like this since the Wii days. It's a super neat homage which is what Star Allies was anyway. It's a fanservice game for 25th anniversary.
Kirby and the Forgotten Land and Splatoon 3 are my most played games this year. I replayed through Forgotten Land some more times and have been doing various runs with the powers. Splatoon, I have been playing online and also beat the single player campaign. Also played a lot of the Super Nintendo service.
Kirby and the Forgotten Land is my Favorite game this year. I also enjoyed Elden Ring and beat that. I put in 160 hours but Forgotten Land put a smile on my face the whole time. Pure joy and whimsy. My goty.
YES I will return to Tetris for this theme! Love that the Dedede theme from the music fest is the intense music here lol
@NerdyBoutKirby OMG YES. I was waiting for that keychain also! I still have my points, waiting for it. I don't know if we're going to get it in the west at this point 😕
I was really hoping for Kirby to get a GOTY year nomination and recognition for that AWESOME soundtrack but alas.
I beat Elden Ring but didn't like it as much as Sekiro so not really emotionally invested in the rest. Only voted in the family category. Gonna skip these awards mostly.
As someone whose been a fan since their first game, this is quite an emotional achievement! A lot of push and risk for HAL was put into this title and they knew they had to hit it out of the park or lose the chance to take the finicial risk for awhile. Which would have continued stunting the franchise with a continuation of solid but dariative Super Star inspired follow ups titles or smaller in scale experimental entries. Which would have remained solid but I feel like with Kirby, his ability and charm, there's SO MUCH untapped potential. I'm glad Shinya Kumazaki went on record to confirm this is just the beginning with this big push.
I don't pay too much attention to supplementary materials for games. However, I may be interested in them and collect them if they ever saw a western release in more languages.

I love how Kirby Air Ride is only considered for casual spouses and children while also have a VERY dedicated competitive gaming scene.

Kirby Air Riders!!!
Everything Kirby and Everything Fromsoft. My two favorites.

@Uncle_Franklin Return to Dreamland was much more popular among long time fans. Especially in Japan.
