Chef Kawasaki seems to be featured in quite a few Japanese memes there. The character is fan fave thanks to the anime.
I never heard of many if any cease and desists from HAL labs themselves other than this and some music take downs.
Makes sense why this was discontinued lol. I don't think HAL wants to promote the meme of one of their characters being a secret pervert... even if it's over the top.
Just so folks know, there are payment plans. Might do 30 monthly payment for the standard statue. There's also the King Dedede Nendoroid which looks adorable, is poseable, and a cheaper option if you don't mind a smaller figure.
Lol tbh I think Dunky is funny and I tend to like a bunch of his vids. Thats saying something because i generally dont like any youtubers. He's okay. I'm also not SUPER into the writing in a lot of rpgs or into strand type games lol I think it's funny how many ppl mad at him about it tho.
Good luck to him, I guess. It's an undertaking and finicial risk I'm sure.
I haven't been playing a lot of JRPGs. I'm a bit picky about them although I did enjoy some of Octopath Traveler, Dragon Quest 11, and really enjoyed Shin Megami Tensei 5. However this looks cool. Characters look cool, has a lot of folks from classic jrpgs working on it. Looks interesting in a way that the genre doesn't usually do for me. Over 100 characters seems wild. I may look into it.
@Joker1234 LOL yeah and it's fine if she likes to farm or whatever in games but LOL why be negative that HAL is doing TOO MUCH for Kirby. Would they say this if Nintendo went all out with Zelda or Mario? HAL just gives a crap about their character's anniversary and as fans we have been EXCITED. So this is just another great announcement that shows they're passionate and care. Care enough to remake a fan favorite, to have some great musicians play AMAZING renditions for fans, Put out a STUNNING 3D entry that hits it out of the park on it's first try, and to put out a very fun party game for only 15 bucks with loads of fanservice! WHAT IS HAL THINKING!? Do they know they don't HAVE to do all that for their fans!!! LOL Maybe they want to because they actually care.
Jeez Nintendolife really doesn't like the Kirby franchise. You are mostly all really negative about a franchise getting a lot of love on it's anniversary. I get it's not your cup of tea but fans are ecstatic and appreciate the love. HAL knows how to please. Return to Dreamland is a fan favorite, especially in Japan.
Doubt anyone has ever complained about Mario having 3 games with him in it, in a year.
I personally was not surprised by this announcement. RtDL is the most popular modern Kirby entry in Japan. Recently on a top 100 video games of all time list, there were 3 Kirby games voted in. Air Ride, Super Star, and Return to Dreamland. There was talks about a possible compilation as well for the 30th anniversary and a third dev team whose project no one knew about. The character of Magolor is also very popular in Japan. So I thought it was possible for it to be put out again or even remade again.
Still I imagine a switch remake is still very surprising to most. Many games still haven't been ported over with a chance to play them again.
Anyway, it's worthy of the remake and I'm glad to see it on Switch.
@StephenYap3 I guess it reminded me more of the amusement park Magolor built after the events of Return to Dreamland as part of the 20 anniversary compilation. The compilation included new challenge levels similar to the extra levels in the Lor Star Cutter you could unlock in RtDL.
@ArchRex RtDL is WAY more popular than Planet Robobot in Japan and with the multiplayer it's more appealing to more folks also. Just seems like a good fit for the switch honestly.
Very cool. The new mech ability is amazing. A bunch of previous sub games showing up is awesome. Really hoping for online multiplayer and new extra modes and additions.
Thank god. These went up in price so much. Practically 300 bucks if you missed them the first time. Now folks have a chance to get these without the crazy mark up. I just bought a Planet Robobot one for 300 dollars because sadly it's gotten so expensive. Since it's game specific I doubt that one will get a rerelease anyway.
However I will preorder these when possible. Happy to have a second chance.
@victordamazio hey Dreamlnd had an awesome Extra mode which IS harder.
Kirby games have always included some challenge. Either post game or within the design. Such as having an enemy with ball ability appear before an area with many more pitfalls. Coaxing the player to DARE cross while maintaining a bounce if they so dared. It just never forced it because the games aren't about excluding new players and I love that about the series.
Especially when games were so notorious for design choices made to pad for time, compete with rental times, or suck up your quarters.
@Serpenterror Animals are out because riding has evolved into players being able to just ride each other. So kirby can just get on King Dedede's back in Return to Dreamland or any of his friends in Star Allies for a ride.
The animal friends are also mentioned as spirits and show in Smash events such as the Gameboy event showing Gameboy spirits and including Kine from DL2.
I think there's only so much you can do with riding and it's sort of been done already. It was used again in Planet Robobot as the Robobot instead of animals.
Kirby can honestly just do a lot on his own without having to rely on animals as much anymore. Give him wing or jet ability and he can just fly, etc without the middle man. Still I understand fans might just miss the particular characters. Folks can check out Star Allies if they are just interested in some fanservice since they are straight up playable in that game.
As a retro Kirby fan, I gotta say, this whole youtube thing is a dream come true! To have the og director just talk about his work is AWESOME. Truly this 30th anniversary for Kirby has been amazing for me. It's the year that keeps on giving for a Kirby fan.
@KryptoniteKrunch I agree! I never made the connection before even though Kirby's Dreamland is my first ever Kirby game but that hit stop he put in Kirby, he also put in Smash Brothers and it is a cool effect and seen in some other games as well.
I really want to go to Kirby cafe sometime in my life 😩
I feel like Nintendolife were never even big Kirby fans either. You all basically have multiple ppl there that write about how you all never even gotten into the games before. So of course a big fan like me is jealous lol. Excluding DreamlandGem of course.
I wish one would open up on NY or someplace here I could travel to! Doubt that's gonna happen. 😞
@Lizuka Yeah I don't think Kirby needs to "stay and their lane"
and the massive success of Forgotten Land and the positive reception is proof of that. Kirby can now do 3D and 2D with proven empirical and critical success lol
So I'm sure HAL is gonna keep doing what makes money and gets critical praise and keep working on 3D. I'm sure they will also keep making 2D options as well. Much like Mario has both, Kirby will have both. Buy what you like of the two but I don't think 3D is going anywhere or that Kirby needs to stay in any one lane anymore.
I loved playing the Arena modes with all the unlocked characters in Star Allies. Star Allies is flawed but it's a good game to play with someone new to gaming. I played all of Star Allies with my mom and it was perfect for us both to enjoy. It's very focused on being a game you play with someone else getting into gaming. I'm glad that option is out there because I can't play a lot of games with her. Mario is a bit too hard because she can fall a lot and other then Kirby, she loves Mario Party.
Forgotten Land is definitely super fun with someone or solo and can stand on it's own a lot better in single player.
Anyway, I've been following Kirby games for YEARS and they all influence each other honestly. Games that came before are always all stepping stones for the next idea. The cancelled gamecube game became RTDL, the canceled Tilt n Tumble game idea looks like it got reworked into Dream Buffet. Battle Royale and Blow Out Blast were also stepping stones for 3D development.
HAL doesn't waste a thing. Development always seems to go towards something in the long run. Ideas cancelled get explored again. It's so a cool to see how their work and history is layered.
@Dev9417 I think it’s implied in the game code of a previous title (Return to Dreamland) that the hand in the game over screen is also called master hand. A hand glove has been present since the first game on gameboy as well. Also Master Hand’s attacks come from the Wham Bam boss fight from Kirby Super Star. So these hands have some history in Kirby.
They also announced a Dedede prototype Nendoroid figure that looks super cute!!! Kirby fans have been waiting for for a Dedede figure for some time now. We were quite hyped.
The Metroid figures look stunning. Dread was fantastic. My GOTY in 2021
@Snatcher Just wanted to put it out there that some folks might just not be interested, because they legit aren't interested in the offering. As a possible explanation for some of the comments. Contrary to what some defenders might generalize.
@spidey123 I rather watch my animation then see them reduced to a standard style across the board like this, personally but if you are satisfied then it good for one of us.
@NinjaWaddleDee God I just legit don't like the aesthetics or characters. I'm more into a game about video games. A celebration of the actual medium. Not Bugs Bunny or Superman. I'm just not interested in the offering or how it looks. Sure call it Nintendo bias 🙄
@Axecon it’s not surprising Dreamland sold so well. It’s a very solid entry level title for the times and the gameboy was HUGE. It just became a must have for the handheld along some other decent titles for the handheld. Mario, Zelda, Tetris, etc
@Not_Soos I’m a HUGE Kirby fan since the first game and honestly I felt the same. I don’t dislike the game as much as you. I did have a lot of fun with the Arena mode afterwards. However you are right about the levels feeling super lackluster. The meat of the game is just lacking. It’s made more painful and frustrating by the fact that the game was a 25th anniversary send off. It should have felt like more of an epic send off of 2D Kirby but it’s just fanservice to the extreme with weak levels. Maybe if HAL didn’t spend as much time on SO MANY additional characters and worked on levels and worlds, would have balanced out. OR if the game was just all these awesome characters and boss fights at half the price, I would have been satisfied. Felt like it needed to concentrate on a particular thing.
@StephenYap3 Kirby Super Star is awesome! The introduction of multimove powers was phenomenal. I do think that the powers I'm Forgotten Land have a few moves each as well as multiple utility. SO overall I still enjoyed it. I get what you mean tho. I think now HAL has a foundation in 3D to work from and maybe they would consider a 3D entry that expands on powers more.
It's probably just tough for HAL because they have to strike the balance between entry level design and variety with moves like those games. Making 3D just also throws another factor into the equation where beginners are also experiencing new navigation and space. I think what we got in FL is a compromise but I can see the possibility of adding to it in the future. They kind of have powers set up too from Battle Royale.
