Minecraft will be rolling out a new update in 2023, currently known as the "1.20 update". This update is still taking shape and Mojang says the community will be involved in the naming process and more. Here's a brief rundown of what was showcased during this segment of Minecraft Live 2022:
New playable avatars
Steve and Alex will be joined by a whole new range of characters, here's a look:
New Item: Hanging Sign
New Wood Set: Bamboo
In addition to the new wood block set Bamboo, players will also be able to use this wood to craft a bamboo raft.
New Block: Chiseled Bookshelf
New Mob: Camel
"Roadtrip! This tall, rideable mob has space for you and a friend. Camels are found in desert villages, but locating a friend is up to you!"
The 1.20 beta/snapshot/preview update will be made available to Minecraft users in just a few days, with the full update launching in 2023.

I keep seeing people disappointed with the update, but after what we got for the past two updates, I guess it's to be expected that the scope is smaller this time.
I like the new wood, signs, and the camel. Everything else is kinda meh.
Maybe They will grow on me later, but none of those guys look nearly as iconic as Steve or Alex.
Why have they had the same ten paintings in the game forever? I never understood that.
A lot of these updates look out of place.
The game was best prior to the Combat Update.
Does that mean you could only play as alex or steve before?
@Ryu_Niiyama Steve and Alex were the default skins for the player character, if you hadn’t imported/obtained any others. This update adds the 7 other characters in that image to the default skins list, making a total of 9.
I've never really taken any interest in Minecraft, I've no idea why. It almost feels too late to start from scratch at this point
I do love camels. They have such goofy-looking faces.
9 characters and not one white guy?
@BigE IMHO the opposit is the case. There is so much you can do in this game it is just ridiculous. Until 2018 (if I remember correctly) MC was absolutely uninteresting for me. A friend persuaded me to buy the game when it was on sale and the first few hours were not very interesting but after those I was totally in and never looked back until today. Never played a game that could keep me interested so long, not even any Mario game (and I am kinda hardcore Mario fan). From MY PERSPECTIVE Minecraft is absolutely worth its money once spend. Ah and I'm team Java btw. 😆
@Uwii thanks for that. Youve convinced me, I think I'll pick it up then!
@BigE If I did, I am glad about that. The risk of not getting warm with MC is very low I think. MC has so much to offer for the players that nothing is set in stone what to do. Overall MC is a game that you can play as YOU like whatever any other is gonna tell you. If you want to fight monsters, go for it! If you want to collect resources, do it! If you just want to build something to calm down, you can do that too.
If you want to build kind of automatic things, redstone got you covered. Don't like the look of the vanilla game? There's plenty of texture packs (well, on Bedrock Edition on consoles that comes with a price though: money, but I think there are free texture packs as well but I don't know for sure).
Ah and the music of this game is very beautiful as well. Awesome game you can put thousands of hours into if you want. Ok ok ok, I'll stop here. Sorry, but I just love MC – which I woud have never believed I one day would. ^^
Sorry for off topic. But I'm very excited at the moment because of what is to come to the game very soon.^^
@BigE
Definitely get Minecraft I got it late too just a few months ago and I can say no other game allows such freedom. I can understand why it's the best selling game of all time.
@Uwii I'm going to download it tonight 😀 I'm not as young as I used to be, so the thought of being able to play as you described definitely appeals to me
I just cannot get into Minecraft. I tried recently and I really want to but the game is just too empty and really boring.
I think that is because I don't have a creative bone in my body. Making stuff is hard and boring.
I like the world itself though. I wish there were more things to do in the actual world.
Oh and the game really needs to start looking like the trailers on consoles because the game looks so lifeless.
@BigE btw, if you’re a pc gamer at all I would recommend getting the Java (original) version of the game, all the other platforms are Bedrock edition which is mostly the same but the Switch version especially isn't very good, it’s pretty buggy
@ThePizzaCheese LOL
“Diversity is awesome.”
I would not get Minecraft for Switch. I have it, and it's buggy as hell. The store doesn't fully load and is full of placeholder names. Skins don't load properly. Load times are awful. Multiplayer fixes bugs but introduces new ones every patch. Cross-play is a disaster.
I did get Java Edition to play on my Steam Deck, though, and that's a 1000% better experience. If you're not married to the Switch, do yourself a favor and get that instead.
Why does the new Sunny skin have Rabbid Luigi's redesigned outfit
@ThePizzaCheese because "muh racism" and "everyone needs to feel included".
In their defense I guess Alex can be considered White? Not that it really matters tbh as a human being with brown skin I never cared about representation in games of all things.
I play for fun, not for diversity points.
@Arkay finally someone with brain cells. Thank you. Let’s just have fun and play games without making them political statements lol.
@Arkay Yeah, Alex looks pretty white, and so does one of the new girls, but you'd think there at least would be one white guy.
And I completely agree, "representation" never mattered to me either. I just wish it would stop mattering to game publishers...
@DarkTron Good to know! At least there are more options now. I'm not a minecraft person but I may give this new update a try.
@ThePizzaCheese Didn't you know? Aside from the whole "white men are evil" stigma that stupid people keep spouting, the Minecraft devs want you to believe that all Minecraft characters are genderless...despite the fact that Steve is clearly male and Alex is clearly female.
@ThePizzaCheese Alex and Steve look like white people to me and they were the defaults, so what's the problem?
Removed - inappropriate
@ThePizzaCheese lmao didn’t even notice until you brought that up. Pretty sad that is considered “OK” these days.
@ThePizzaCheese Technically the Minecraft characters are genderless (or at least Alex and Steve are, I’d assume the same is true for these ones), which is hard to believe in Steve’s case, but that’s what the developers said.
It doesn’t really matter though, because it’s very easy to import other avatars for free.
It's like a fox news comment section up in here. I'll tell you folks what I've been told for years. "stop whining"
Thank goodness for "ignore"
When will diversity be extended to the Zombie community?
While it's perfectly fine that they're introducing new default characters, I do feel that they lack the "oomph" that Steve and Alex have. Not only that but the presence of a character creator in the bedrock edition as well as the ability to import custom skins in certain versions of the game kinda makes the addition of more default skins somewhat redundant.
@Ryu_Niiyama I didn't say there was a problem. But Steve doesn't look white to me and Alex isn't a guy.
@BabyYoda71 @Ability-King-KK
As far as I can remember, the genderless thing was only before the Microsoft acquisition. After that Steve became officially male and Alex was added as a female counterpart.
@ThePizzaCheese never said Alex was a guy. You lamented representation while asking for a white guy. A white guy, steve is not only the default but the according to the other comments including your own, the original only option. (I don’t play minecraft) So “white guy” is already covered. With Alex being the female option, white people are covered. The other new avatars cover many, but not all, of the other skin color variations in the human race and include both sexes. So it seems odd that you would want the same avatar or be confused by the lack of the same (since you dismissed alex since she is female) rep twice (“white guy” in your words) while also saying you don’t care about representation. You are literally asking for additional representation/wondering why there isn’t additional representation. If no “white guy” existed prior, and they still didn’t add one while adding others, your comment would be neutral/make sense.
As for devs, teams aren’t just made up of white guys, so it stands to reason that eventually that they would include other guys (and gals) of other skin colors. Perhaps they should have just done a character creator with a color wheel and no default character to start.
I mean I don’t care about the new skins, I guess it’s nice for people who don’t wanna bother changing their skin
@BigE never too late!
my sons got me into it and i haven't stopped exploring...
@deeyem I'm definitely going to download it. Meant to do it last night, considered buy inf it physically but I'm probably less likely to play if I have to keep swapping carts out
@Ryu_Niiyama Wait, if you don't play Minecraft why do you even care?
First of all, I already told you that Steve doesn't look white. So according to you my comment should "be neutral/make sense". So what exactly was your point?
But ultimately I don't care if there is a white guy character or not. I'm just pointing out what seems to be an obvious contradiction, that these characters were added with the intent to increase "diversity", yet one of the largest "groups" was still somehow over looked. I mean, would one more really have been so hard? It just really makes you question Microsoft's agenda here...
Honestly your whole comment was very hard to follow and almost a bit racists. You do know white people are capable of making non-white characters right (and vice-versa)?
Plus, there is a character creator, but it stinks.
@BigE the only problem with Minecraft is that it cannibalizes one's interest in other games.
...and work, and relationships, and socialising...
Seriously I was scared of Minecraft for about 8 years; I could tell what it would do to me! Then I overcame some huge challenges in my life, including moving to a country where I don't speak the language, and getting married... As a personal reward, I bought myself Minecraft and gave myself permission to just enjoy the **** out of it. 3 years later and I've clocked thousands of hours on Switch and PC, it's just a game which keeps on giving. It's never too late to start; in some ways the first steps are the most exciting. I watch videos where people say "this is too overpowered" and "that is too easy to get in the early game" - these people have forgotten that the "early game" in Minecraft is not when you start a new world with nothing to your name; it's when you start playing entirely with no knowledge to your name. When you never know what's around the corner and how deep the game really goes. It's fun to be a master, and wiki up the exact programming of how something works in order to build or farm efficiently, but those first steps will be the ones that you remember forever.
@N64-ROX Well spoken, true!
@BigE Hope you enjoy the game!
@N64-ROX this reply really resonated with me and I will definitely be picking this up, I've got a backlog that will never be seen off, but minecraft will definitely be added to my library as soon as I get round to downloading it! Thanks for taking the time to reply
