This game ended up being so surprisingly fun to play. I had zero expectations for a Pokemon game but I wasn't able to put it down once I got out onto the maps. Fun going around and catching what you can.
I don't like that this conversation can only go two ways. Either you're making a big deal out of nothing OR you value graphics over content... which is silly. I'm happy the new Pokemon is a step in the right direction and just bought it. HOWEVER we all know this game could look better and really should to help with immersion. I'm sure it's a good Pokemon game and from what I saw of reviews it's making bold moves but I think it's totally fair to want the WHOLE package to be great and go the extra mile. To have your cake and eat it too. Imagine how much more stellar reviews would have been if on top of this game playing great, it also looked super great. Goty contestant material. It's just not wrong to want it to reach a little more and cheer it on. Doesn't mean you are being entitled or just a graphics nut.
@IronMan30 buying DAY ONE always got a lot of enjoyment from Kirby games. Even did a lot of power runs in Star Allies soul melter ex recently with a friend.
@IronMan30 oh I see. I’m biased so I’m all for Kirby being treated well and getting nice treatment in smash. I mean smash plays the way it does because of the Kirby games lol. Everything from how powers control, master hand, the mirror guard, and even the scrapped idea from dreamland about characters getting shot off stages. Sooo if he’s biased good lol
Sadly if Sakurai were as biased as ppl claim Kirby would be top tier again like n64 😩 I only wished he were but he’s been absolutely fair contrary to that nonsense from others.
Nintendo better keep up their nice treatment tho 😏
@Freek Dreamcourse over Kirby Superstar for snes rep!? I know ppl like that spin off but Kirby Superstar is so popular in Japan it made it on the top 100 list there and has been so influential to later games in the franchise and smash brothers. I’d love deamcourse only if they put Kirby Superstar first lol
@garfreek I guess if it’s retro Kirby then Kirby’s Dreamland and Kirby’s Adventure for sure . Kirby Superstar is my fave classic Kirby title but that’s snes so that might not be retro enough. So I guess DL1, DL2, and Kirby’s Adventure.
@IronMan30 Sakurai hasn’t worked on a Kirby game since Air Ride and advising a bit on Amazing Mirror. Shinya Kumazaki has been the director of many of the current modern age games.
In an interview he did say he was in contact with a previous director/s regarding advice on how to appeal to long time fans of the franchise. This person is most likely Sakurai.
Although Sakurai might give advice he isn’t working for HAL and hasn’t for years.
My wallet! I already got a look at some of the new plush that will be coming out they they look cute but I really loved the retro designed plush that came out on the 25th anniversary. I regret till this day not getting that dreamland plush because now If I want it, I have to pay up to 600 US dollars 😫 One of my greatest regrets ever. I’d love if they rereleased those plush.
Can’t’ wait to see what the activities could be and if ppl overseas can take part in many of them.
@KBuckley27 it’s HAL that is promoting and celebrating their character like this. HAL labs is very into celebrating it’s history and often referencing it’s previous works. You see this across the Kirby games. Nintendo has their own approach to their first party characters.
@DK-Fan HAL labs handles Kirby and their focus is on their own mascot. So they tend to go all out for Kirby. Previous anniversary had merch, compilation , and even an orchestra concert. For DK to get nice stuff it’s Nintendo themselves who have to do it. 🤷🏼♀️
Kirby Superstar is my fave! Great and impressive game for its time.
Yeah, I mean I'm someone who beat Sekiro two times recently so I love challenge but I still always loved Kirby games. The True arenas are always super fun and the recent ones were super awesome and challenging. Still haven't been able to single run soul melter ex but I understand that ppl want something at the start of the game to play. Unfortunately Kirby is an entry level series and prioritizes that but I've always still enjoyed running the games in various ways and as a joyful palette cleanser between more brutal stuff. We don't know yet about other modes in the game so I guess we should just be on the look out.
Sakurai has stated since the original game, that the aim of the series was a game that anyone can play/beat. Hate to break it to ppl but Kirby has always been an entry level series.
The games focus on abilities because they have more an action/beat ‘em up style then a precision platforming leaning. I wouldn’t compare Kirby to Mario or DK at all though I feel ppl play Kirby and immediately wonder why they aren’t similar.
I agree that Kirby’s movements really vary by game. A game like Kirby 64 has a very sluggish and slow Kirby while a game like Kirby Superstar on snes feels very snappy and fast in comparison. This is due to the games varying in style and directors. Sakurai left working at HAL after Kirby’s Air Ride but the most consistent and current director, Shinya Kumazaki works on the newest stuff. Personally I think he’s good, especially after returning movesets to the franchise, a long demanded feature fans had long wanted that adds some depth to level navigation and boss running.
His Kirby never felt as snappy as Sakurai’s Kirby on the SNES but current Kirby has just as many options if not more and Kirby games now have some of the hardest bosses and modes now then ever. There’s Heroes in Another Dimension in Star Allies that has more demanding collection and harder versions of the bosses and the hardest boss rushes are in the new games. Boss rushes in the Kirby games showcase the power’s different play Styles and contain hidden alternatives to some bosses. You have the True Arena and now Soul Melter EX which I haven’t been able to even solo and I recently beat Sekiro twice, on ps4 and then on ps5 lol.
So I dunno. To me Kirby could always stand to be a bit more snappy but overall his mobility is fine thanks to abilities as well tbh, he still flies and gets fat, post games have very demanding content, and it’s an entry level series so I expect the main game to be easy because it was always made for babies lol but I have always enjoyed the series regardless. I chill to the main game and get down in the post game that was made with long timers like me in mind. It’s also nice to play between other harder games like souls, etc.
I don’t demand or assume Kirby will appeal to everyone because it’s entry level but I don’t think the folks at HAL are making Kirby this way because they are incompetent and have simply lost their touch. Kirby is now going on 30 years franchise! They know what they are doing with clever puzzling and unique gameplay when it comes to the spin offs, the creation of smash, games like Part-Time UFO and BOXBOY!, etc. Kirby is just very intentionally Kirby. Kirby works because abilities help keep long time fans interested in running the games in interesting ways while it’s general ease allows people new to gaming to have a chance at beating their first game ever. It’s a well crafted beginner’s series with something for the ppl who grew up with it, too. It’s very much like how Kirby In smash was designed to be really easy to approach and understand the moves and why Kirby in smash is a lot of ppl’s first character to main. The same philosophy is infused there.
I’m a huge Kirby fan. I could never forget about Sakurai! He directed some of my favorite games ever. Though I respect his desire for peace and some more privacy, I will remember.
@Axecon Kirby Superstar is my favorite in the series but Return to Dreamland I’m sure resonates more with younger players. Looks like the Wii was quite popular. I mean Mario Kart Wii made it on this list lol. Still Return to Dreamland is a fine game although I think my favorite modern Kirby is Planet Robobot. I guess by being first, RtDL benefits from feeling newer although the whole point of the title is returning to what made Kirby famous and enjoyable to it’s fans.
@Broski I remember his grandpa died. That was a bummer but overall it's a story about saving his world and saving the girl. I did beat the original game. Maybe I didn't catch more but overall it wasn't like crazy outside of video game stories. It was a good game.
@Broski Kirby has challenging post game content and I played the first Klonoa and the narrative didn’t seem that grand. You save a girl from an evil wizard type guy who himself is like nightmare. Also Kirby has lore or background details so I wouldn’t say it’s lacking in story or world building. I’m not really arguing which has more of these elements but simply that Kirby is not lacking.
I prefer Kirby games for their action leaning over the strict platforming of Klonoa, tho I recommend Klonoa to ppl who liked Kirby 64. It’s more like that Kirby game but not really like any other Kirby game. Even then the games differ in details. Kirby games are not strictly about precision platforming and tbh can’t be compared to other standard platformers. It’s a bit more beat ‘em up + some platforming.
@BlueOcean I disagree on the story. If there's one thing I like about BoTW is its story telling. I give BoTW all the props there. I liked piecing the vision and building up the memories that shed light on Zelda's strength, vulnerability, and burden to bare.
I’ve been playing this game nonstop since it’s launch. It does have performance issues for sure and tbh some aesthetic choices regarding the world are not to my liking. However, since it’s a turn based rpg first and foremost, it has not effected combat.
@VoidofLight I'm not sure when the other games came out but similar games were out and it was just an example I threw out there. I did see ppl demand that soo... guess we were reading different comments. I'll agree to disagree. When you make a game in the style of what's popular then you're going with the trends. That's not necessarily even a bad thing. It's smart and for Zelda a new take. Just felt mixed about the game myself. I had fun finding the towers and some beast dungeons but kinda just pushed through everthing else.
@VoidofLight as opposed to a wondering in empty maps/slowly climbing a rock simulator. Sorry but open worlds are trendy and ppl like to play sports teams when it comes to these game companies. If other consoles like Playstation are gonna have games like horizon zero dawn, etc then no way Zelda can stay classic. Ppl assume any new game trailer is open world now. Ppl expect Zelda to follow suit. It's fine. I don't think BoTW is a bad game but like I said earlier, preferences.
@VoidofLight personally I found the stamina meter more annoying in BoTW since you have to do a bunch of wondering before your first upgrade and by then I was getting annoyed by it. Atleast there was free fruit to pick up everywhere in Skyward Sword so I never had to slow down at the start. Also I still think ppl's complaints about games being linear is more personal taste. I just don't think a game being linear is bad. Some ppl enjoy wondering as ganeplay. I just think the general public wanted the Zelda series to keep up with the trends and compete with what's out there. Which SURE as a series and product, yeah. I personally like getting to the dungeons and the dungeons being more unique with unique bosses. That had to be chucked in BoTW for all the extra forests they had to put in now. Also I found weapons breaking all the time annoying. That's just me tho. Preferences.
@VoidofLight I enjoyed Skyward Sword more then BoTW personally. I don’t think being linear is a valid criticism. More like a preference. Ppl can be as bored with linear as they can be wondering around an empty map with nothing but two npcs searching for mushrooms.
God I loved Hollow Knight. I've replayed it SO MANY times and have bought it multiple times. It's my absolute favorite metroidvania and yes I have played symphony of the night and super metroid. Both FANTASTIC but something about Hollow Knight kept me gripped. Always felt like something to discover and it just always kept me moving forward. I really hope that at the very least we get a release date announced next year. At minimum.
@BlackenedHalo These are all the reasons I like the main protagonist. I'm really into the game and the hair is awesome. Its like a nice trail of wispy action that accompanies all the running and sliding. Something nice and beautiful in such a dreary world.
Really enjoying the game! I'm over 20 hours in and the loop is so addictive. Love finding items around every corner, upgrading and selling, using it all to fuse new demons and recruiting demons, and going into battle. Good stuff.
Wanted to replay Kirby 64 from my childhood but guess it’s gonna be a few months. I’m sharing a family plan with friends so whatever. At this point I could replay the game on Wii via the VC or the 30th anniversary collection at this point but I guess I can wait…
I just beat two separate files of Sekiro So I’m taking a break but this list is solid. Really enjoyed Dark Souls, Hollow Knight, Furi, Hyperlight Drifter, etc.
I'm very into the idea of cutting out a lot of the characters to be honest. Take out like half of them for all I care. Long as main Smash 64 cast is there, I won't cry about it.
I only check out the game awards for announcements. The awards show itself is dull as hell with very weird categories and prizes I just don't give a crap about like "best e sports coach" etc yuck. Sekiro winning game of the year was cool and Smash announcements were very cool. Some minor neat things now and then but overall it sucks. Especially if you mostly like Nintendo. You have the family category to look forward to and that's about it. Metroid Dread winning would be cool but considering the hype around the new resident evil title I doubt it.

Re: Japanese Magazine Nintendo Dream Might Be Teasing A New Game
I like clicking a Kirby article and seeing PINK
I figured there was more in store for Kirby anyway. Usually a spinoff though a compilation of the previous games is in demand.
Just gonna wait for that direct. The hype is too much. It's hard enough being patient another month and more for Forgotten Land.

@MichaelP OH good.
