Re: PSA: Remember, You Can 'Fix' The Camera In Zelda: The Wind Waker On Switch 2

EarthboundBenjy

@nukatha
That was certianly the idea back in the day, since just the idea of controlling a camera in 3D space in the first place was a new thing. So people must have found it easier to imagine a physical camera behind the character. Especially so for Super Mario 64 that literally did have this.

However, once console first-person shooters with dual-sticks became a thing, people got used to pushing the right stick in the direction they wanted to look at.
I can't imagine playing a first-person game with inverted camera on the right stick, that would be insane. So with this in mind, I think it kind of makes sense how "un-inverted" became standard - because people got used to how FPSes worked, and expected the right stick to work similarly in third-person games. Especially with the rise of games like Minecraft or Skyrim that let you freely swap between first and third person.

By the way, I noticed something while playing Suikoden IV last year - that game pointlessly features the ability to play in first-person. While in first-person, the camera stick is un-inverted, and while in third-person, it is inverted, and there is no way to change this. Absolutely insane how jarring and confusing this feels when you try it yourself lol.

Nowadays, games like Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition implement "first person mode" by literally just zooming in the camera close to the protagonist's head and making the character invisible. No need to actually make it a functionally separate mode, since it doesn't use inverted camera. And it works great.

Re: PSA: Remember, You Can 'Fix' The Camera In Zelda: The Wind Waker On Switch 2

EarthboundBenjy

...I've been playing lots of GameCube / PlayStation 2 era games recently that default to inverted with no option to change.
So I've grown accustomed to just... adapting to it on a game-by-game basis. If I want to play a wide variety of games, both old and new, I can't let something like the changing trends of camera controls prevent me from enjoying them.

It's extra weird when you've grown accustomed to an inverted camera and then you play a modern game, and it's like... "normal" feels weird now...??? haha. But then you eventually readjust again and it's fine.

It's good that they give you the option in the NSO app, but I wouldn't use it personally because it messes with the Wind Waker's controls and other C-stick actions. So if I ever replay Wind Waker, I'll just adapt again. No biggie for me.

Re: Mini Review: Sonic X Shadow Generations (Switch 2) - Definitely Improved, But SEGA's Shafting Early Adopters

EarthboundBenjy

The thing is... if you buy the Switch 1 version, it's more versatile because you can play it on Switch 1 or Switch 2 as you like. Whereas if you buy the Switch 2 version, you've only got one option on which console to play it on.

And if both your consoles are paired to each other and you're using the same account, it's easy to get the latest save data from the cloud, so swapping back and forth between consoles is actually surprisingly not an issue.

I don't plan to discontinue using my Switch 1 just because I got a Switch 2 - it's lighter and has a better battery life, so it's more suited for longer days out compared to Switch 2.

I dunno. This would have been nice if it was handled like how Pokémon was - just an update patch rather than an entire new version. Or if sega really wanted to skeeve us out of our money, an upgrade pack like Zelda. ... But an entire full-price standalone rerelease is asking too much.

Re: Review: Puyo Puyo Tetris 2S (Switch 2) - A Disappointing Update For A Modern Puzzle Classic

EarthboundBenjy

I'm a Puyo Puyo fan but this release is ridiculous, even for Sega standards. A full-price rerelease, with no upgrade option for people who got the previous version. And a Game Key Card-only physical release for good measure.
If I ever see the game key card version for bargain bin prices, I may get this version. Either that or Sega starts offering discounts on the eShop. But for now........ just no. No sega. Bad sega.

Re: Want To 100% 'Welcome Tour'? You'll Need To Cough Up For Some Accessories

EarthboundBenjy

I was curious about this, but that picture of "plz buy a 4KTV kthx" made me immediately say no way.

I'm not buying a new TV. My current one still has all the scart, component, and composite inputs, which I need for all my retro stuff. Plus I don't want a modern "smart" tv anyway. I don't want a tv that needs me to log in and update its firmware and all that... that still sounds ridiculous to me.

Re: UK Retailer GAME Cancels A Bunch Of Nintendo Switch 2 Pre-Orders

EarthboundBenjy

last time I tried to buy something from GAME, it was the Fire Emblem Engage collector's edition, and they didn't fulfil my preorder for whatever reason. I tried to contact them but the website wasn't working correctly.

Thankfully FE Engage wasn't so popular in the grand scheme of things, which meant the Nintendo UK Store still had the collector's edition in stock. So I cancelled my GAME order and got it from Nintendo UK Store.

So yeah. I don't order from GAME any more.

(... out of curiosity, I checked just now, and the FE Engage divine edition is still available on the My Nintendo UK Store lol. still not so popular eh.)

Re: Nintendo Updates 'Switch Online' Trailer With New Switch 2 Footage

EarthboundBenjy

I still have never gotten the Expansion Pass tier. Even as a big Nintendo fan, what it offers is simply just not interesting.

Maybe it's because I collect old games and have the majority of the selection in their original format anyway. If I want to play Golden Sun or Soul Calibur II, I can already do that just fine.

Though.... my sister-in-law is a big Fire Emblem fan, so maybe i'll have to get the expansion pass on our family plan for her sake once Path of Radiance is available in NSO. I guess Nintendo'll always get me in the end.

Re: Nintendo Updates Switch 2 Backwards Compatibility List

EarthboundBenjy

When I get my Switch 2, I'm gonna see exactly what they mean by "games with start up issues". I have a few of them. I want to know if they mean the game literally doesn't start up? Like if I put my Tokyo Xanadu cartridge in my Switch 2, will it just fail to launch the software entirely?

Re: Ys vs. Trails In The Sky Crossover Fighter Confirms Summer Release Window

EarthboundBenjy

This is the sort of fighting game where you have to individually level grind each fighter in order to unlock their moves etc.
And iirc not every fighter even has a story mode to play through, so for most of them, you have to grind them in regular vs matches. It... seemed a bit too much senseless grinding for me to bother with on PSP. I wonder if the Switch version will be exactly the same or not.

Re: Nintendo Files New Trademark For A DS Cult Classic

EarthboundBenjy

I played Another Code on the DS. I got the Wii one but haven't gotten around to it yet. ...It's on the to-do list.

I bought the Switch remake collection, but I felt like I wanted to play the Wii one first, so I haven't played it yet. I know it's the same story, but I know the puzzles are different in the remake version so I want to have played the original first anyway.

I started Hotel Dusk on the DS but didn't get far. I want to restart it at some point. And I bought Last Window for afterwards.

These games are fun and interesting, it would be cool to see if Nintendo is keen on making more of them. Might kickstart me into actually playing through them more expediently lol.

Re: Mailbox: Switch 2 Innovations, Localisation Dreams, "That Big Playtest Thing" - Nintendo Life Letters

EarthboundBenjy

There are STILL so many Japan-only Nintendo games, it's quite upsetting how Nintendo seems completely uninterested in translating or releasing the majority of them.

Even when releasing games like Joy Mech Fight, Mario's Super Picross, or Starfy on the NSO, they can't be bothered to translate them. You know, when Sin & Punishment was released on Wii VC, they did in fact localise the menus into English - so historically they're not completely opposed to modifying the original ROMs. Of course Sin & Punishment was already fully voiced in English so it wasn't a big job, but still. They could put in the effort a bit better for the sake of NSO.

Nintendo's most notable modern translation of an older Japan-only game was Fire Emblem 1. But inscrutably, they delisted this version only after a few months, and have never spoken of it again! What in the actual heck Nintendo??? Give it back!

Nintendo have been seemingly okay with remake versions of their Japan-only games - Famicom Detective Club and Fire Emblem Echoes for example. But I would still love to see so many more classic Nintendo games finally get the localisation treatment in their original form, like Fire Emblem 1 did.

I want to see:

  • Fire Emblem 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 12
  • Mother 3
  • Archaic Sealed Heat
  • Marvelous: Another Treasure Island
  • The Frog For Whom the Bell Tolls
  • Kururin Paradise and Kururin Squash
  • Tingle's Balloon Trip of Love
  • Tomato Adventure
  • Giftpia
  • Captain Rainbow
  • Starfy 1, 2, 3, 4
  • Rhythm Tengoku

and like a ton more. Come on Nintendo, you should respect your overseas fans more. Don't make just one of these and then delist it a few months later, that's so incredibly disrespectful to your most loyal fans.

Re: Nintendo Unveils Diddy Kong's Brand New Design

EarthboundBenjy

The Nintendo logo on Diddy's hat is going, huh. I wonder if Nintendo felt like it was a bit too fourth-wall-y for the way they want the characters to be depicted going forward. The cheeky British charm of the Rareware games is getting replaced with a more cutesy Japanesey aesthetic.

Re: Video: 10 GameCube Games We Want On Switch 2's Online Expansion Pack

EarthboundBenjy

I want some weird games that people don't tend to know about.
Give us Billy Hatcher, Gotcha Force, Cubivore.
Give me that game about casting magic with Skittles - Darkened Skye

I also want to see all the third-party multiplatform games like Rayman 3, or Spyro: A Hero's Tail, or Prince of Persia Sands of Time. or even like Crazy Taxi.
...Soul Calibur II is a promising start for these kinds of games.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (10th May)

EarthboundBenjy

Croc was a childhood favourite game of mine. ...and the recent release of the Croc remaster reminded me that I never actually played Croc 2.

So with a Croc 2 original PlayStation disc, I played through it.

I have to say, it was quite fun, though it feels rather unpolished compared to its contemporaries such as Spyro or Banjo.

I did not like the lives system in the game, and some levels (especially Roger Red Ant) felt unnecessarily punishing due to the way lives work. I'm also not a fan of the need to grind crystals to buy jellies from the shop, it felt a bit unnecessary.

I got all the golden Gobbo statues and jigsaw pieces, and saw the extremely underwhelming secret ending. Literally upon grabbing the final collectible, the credits comes up with a message saying "congratulations you got 100% in Croc 2" and that's all that happens. ... bleh. At least the regular ending was fine.

Also I played Croc 2 on my PlayStation 2 Slim, which has a bizarre effect of messing up the sound effects on occasion. Gobbo voices sound like Dantini cackles, Croc makes door creaking or crystal sound effects when attacking, sometimes the shopkeeper's voice replaces the footsteps noise.... it was all very silly. Apparently this issue only occurs when playing on a PS2 Slim specifically - a PS2 fat, PS3, or PS1 plays the game just fine. Weird stuff.

Anyways. Croc 2 was good, so hopefully they remaster Croc 2 too! And then release them both in a bundle with the Game Boy Color games included too for good measure?

Re: SaGa Frontier 2 Remastered Switch Physical Release Arrives Next Month

EarthboundBenjy

I plan to get this from Play-Asia at some point, that's how I got Scarlet Grace and Emerald Beyond too. It's good that the physical versions with English support exist somewhere at least, and I'm glad that Play-Asia is allowing people to get these versions.

I'm waiting and hoping that there will exist proper Switch 2 physical games that can be gotten via Play-Asia too - I'm not buying Game Key Card versions at all.

Re: Sonic X Shadow Generations Is Confirmed As A Launch Title For Switch 2

EarthboundBenjy

Sega, Capcom, Konami, Square Enix - they're all doing the same thing with the Key Card nonsense, and of course there's no upgrade option. Why have all the big Japanese companies unanimously decided to take the same path of user unfriendliness?

I have a feeling the majority of my physical Switch 2 collection will be indies and non-Japanese games if this keeps up.

Re: Nintendo Removes Worrying Cloud Save Note From Select Switch 2 Game Pages

EarthboundBenjy

@Sensible
It's not stupid to try and find official sources for answers to the many unanswered questions we have.

As to why Zelda might not have cloud save functionality? Because many Nintendo Switch 1 games have arbitrarily no cloud save support, and we can't make guesses based on previous releases. Splatoon 3 supports cloud saves, but Splatoon 2 doesn't. And even some completely offline games like New Super Lucky's Tale don't have cloud save support, and who knows why?

We can only go by what has been said. And so that's why we look at what is being said on official platforms. You cannot make assumptions about these things if you want to know how it will work.

Re: Nintendo Expands Switch Online's GBA Library With A Classic Fire Emblem

EarthboundBenjy

@romanista

Yes, Sacred Stones is Fire Emblem 8.

Fire Emblems 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 12 remain Japanese-only.

And the English edition of Fire Emblem 1 was inexplicably de-listed after only four months of availability.

The Game Boy Advance had Fire Emblem 6, 7, and 8.

The first Fire Emblem game to be translated into English was FE7. So many fans outside of Japan think of the GBA lineup as just 7 and 8, since 6 was not released worldwide. But I am a fan of all three GBA games, including the Japanese FE6. So I still hope that FE6 will also arrive eventually too. Either in Japanese (like how Densetsu no Starfy is on GBA NSO in Japanese), or in English, like how FE1 was released as its own app.
