To put this into perspective, the game was announced three months before the reveal of the Nintendo Switch. So, what will come first? This, Switch 2 reveal, or Metroid Prime 4?
I'll wait till the digital version is released to see if it's a good enough port, and then I will get a Japanese copy. No fomo pressure, cheaper and I will get it earlier than Limited Run. Three birds in one stone.
"But I think that’s just because they’re looking through these lenses that are tainted with their experience of having played Chibi-Robo. And actually, this is its own very different sort of game."
Silly gamers. Whatever gave you the idea that Small Robot Game 2 is similar to Small Robot Game 1?
Just 3 years? That's incredibly short compared to the Steam release's 9+ years. And since the other 2 Cave shoot-em-ups handled by Live Wire (Espgaluda II and DoDonPachi Resurrection) were also released in 2021, they could potentially be removed not long afterwards.
As a funny note, the Japanese physical version will be released 3 weeks after the game's removal from the e-shop. So, it won't be all doom and gloom... at least, for a while.
"Developers should hold back for the next Nintendo console".
No, they shouldn't. Between a console that has proved itself (and has a large userbase) and a console that isn't guaranteed to succeed, developers shouldn't abandon the Switch in a heartbeat just because the successor has better specs.
If the Switch can't run the game in question? Sure. But, there is no good reason to skip games that could run fine on the Switch, just because it's old news. Take a look at Playstation 4. They are still releasing games for the system, even though it's now 11-years-old and had its successor released 4 years ago.
If Nintendo wants to pretend that the Switch will no longer exist past 2025, fine, they can repeat that mistake. They shouldn't be surprised if they end up with a Switch U.
He's not wrong. They are not in some circle of hell reserved for developers.
As for figuratively, well, it has already been 5 years since it was announced. At this point, it has taken more time than the original Hollow Knight to launch.
Conker's Bad Fur Day, Duke Nukem: Zero Hour, and Resident Evil 2 are the only ones I would consider. The others... not so much, when there are better versions on Switch and other platforms.
I really don't like this drip-feed remake/remaster thing. I'd much prefer if Nintendo just released their older catalog in some form that we could easily access, because there are still so many Nintendo-owned games that are not available in digital form. But they will never do that, for they know they can easily sell a remaster of a 20-years-old game for full price and have others justify it, because it hasn't been available for purchase ever since then.
If the demo hadn't convinced me to avoid the game altogether, I would be angry that the "expensive cartridge" version had the same price as the code-in-a-box version. I hope this happens to be a funny coincidence and not a new LRG scheme that forces code-in-a-box on retail, while holding the cartridge exclusive to them.
I come from the future. Nintendo will release Mother 3 in the West in January 2026 to celebrate its 20th anniversary. Then, they will remove it from stores in April 2026 because the anniversary will be over.
It's wild how every analyst and their dog was convinced we would be getting a new Switch by 2020-2021. It's even wilder how these rumours began as far back as freaking 2018. Switch Pro has become the hardware equivalent to the Bloodborne PC port meme.
"As people embrace that [streaming] model, they will see that these games will exist, the service will continue, and you'll be able to access them when you feel like. That's reassuring."
You mean, as reassuring as Netflix removing movies from its service and increasing its monthly cost? Or as reassuring as Ubisoft making "The Crew" permanently unplayable because they couldn't be arsed to implement an offline mode?
