When the game was delayed to June, I jokingly questioned whether we would get the Switch 2 announcement, Metroid Prime 4, or this first. Now, after a total of 9 delays, I might just have the answer.
I already got the original version on PC, so I'll be waiting for the new version to be released there, as well. Maybe we'll also get the same upgrade option that Asian users will be receiving on Steam.
Nintendo shutting down any opportunity to save money? Must be a day ending in y. First, the gold coins, now the vouchers. What's next? Increasing the price of NSO worldwide? Reducing their digital discounts to 10%? Increasing the price of Switch 1 games on the e-shop?
Setting up the stage to normalize AI usage. Don't worry, AI will be used tastefully, with tact. You will be tastefully replaced. Skynet will be tastefully activated.

Final Fantasy Tactics is not the same game as Final Fantasy Tactics Advance. As for a physical release, it will get one worldwide for PS5 and Switch on 30th September.
We have a ton of game-key cards and even three code-in-a-box games before the Switch 2 is even out. If publishers are opting out of physical that early, it's only going to get worse.
Breath of the Wild sold more than Tears of the Kingdom in this quarter. Not by much, mind you, but it's interesting how the latter barely had any legs compared to the former.
"Still, it's a neat little extra for Switch 2 owners, though we daresay players would love to see the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion instead. We'll just have to wait and see if FromSoftware launches it via separate DLC later down the line."
Huh? I'm pretty sure the expansion is already included. From the trailer's description:
"Rise, Tarnished. The critically acclaimed dark-fantasy action RPG ELDEN RING: Tarnished Edition is coming to Nintendo Switch 2 this year – including the base game, the Shadow of the Erdtree Expansion, new armour, and a new Torrent appearance customisation feature."
Hardly a surprise. Not only are game-key cards prevalent on the Switch 2 (in fact I would consider the opposite newsworthy), but this is also one of the games that had a mandatory day-one patch on Playstation 5.
@-wc- "does it justify two significant price hikes in as many years?" Of course it does. Nintendo is a small indie company. Please understand, if they can't resell you 10+ years-old-games at full price, they'll go bankrupt.
Not a single one. If my only choices are digital or digital without the convenience, I'll go full digital on PC. At least there, I have access to better performance and mods.
"Even when a cartridge does contain data on day one of release, games are so often patched, updated and expanded through downloads that the cart very often loses its connection to the game, and functions more like a physical copy protection dongle for a digital object."
Lol no. The basic version of Super Mario Odyssey is not drastically different than the last. Neither is Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Mario Party Superstars, Astral Chain, etc. A game patched might be a better game, but let's not kid ourselves in believing that patching outright transforms a game. Not every game is No Man's Sky, Stardew Valley or Terraria.
And on the flip side, if the first version is THAT different, then that's a bonus, because you have access to a different build that a digital-only version will never provide (you will be instead stuck only with the latest build).
If Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 was "too small" for a real physical release, then how does Story of Seasons: Grand Bazaar achieve it, when it's even smaller? (2.8 GBs compared to Puyo Puyo Tetris' 4 GBs.)
Nintendo: "We created those carts specifically for companies like you so you can save up mon-" EA: "But they still cost money, right?" Nintendo: "Yes, but-" EA: "Thanks, but no thanks."
LMAO. The image got me so mad initially, but then I saw a bunch of games that are already available as a full cart on the first Switch and the anger turned to instant laughter. It's amazing that Nintendo deliberately decided to kill the physical market instead of just letting it die gracefully.
Fall damage is fine in Xenoblade games. Nothing is more thrilling than making a huge dive in a pool of water (hey, that's also unrealistic!) and barely missing the land nearby. Or not actually missing it and watching the unintentionally hilarious animation of your character keeling like he was stabbed instead of falling so many metres.

I never said it was a free upgrade. With any luck, it should still be cheaper than paying for the whole game again.
