Re: Japanese Charts: Mario Kart World Can't Keep Code Vein II From The Top Spot

Cakefish

I’m enjoying Code Vein 2 (on Xbox) so far, however it has some pretty major performance issues on XSX (and apparently PS5/PC too). They’ve just announced today they’re working on much needed performance improvements and bug fixes due for release in March. It’s just so annoying that almost every single Unreal Engine 5 game is releasing in a very suboptimal technical state and this only gets attention post-launch. At least they’ve committed to improvements.

They’re also working on some balancing too which is good because my character feels like she’s made out of papier-mâché with how hard some of these early game bosses are hitting.

Re: Review: MIO: Memories In Orbit (Switch 2) - An Accomplished, Visually Stunning, But Familiar Metroidvania

I have Game Pass, though that’s due to expire in March and I’m still unsure if I’ll renew the Ultimate tier. So I’m thinking I might buy this on Switch instead as I’ll be going away on an extended trip next month and will need a portable game to play. If it were a 30fps game I wouldn’t bother and would go with Xbox, but I really want to reward devs who put the effort into making solid 60fps Switch 2 ports.

I sadly bounced off Hollow Knight because of the immense difficulty, so if this offers a similar experience at a more accessible challenge level then I’m very interested!

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (10th January)

I just finished Metroid Prime 4. Such conflicting thoughts. So much good stuff. The art design, the visual effects, the music (in the areas that have classic Metroid Prime musical themes like Fury Green, Volt Forge, Ice Belt), sound effects, most of the bosses.

Then some not so good too. The desert and the bike paired with the abominably tedious green crystal grindfest, cliche NPC dialogue, easily missable scans, the odd reliance on bland ambience over classic Metroid themes in some areas. Also it suffers from being a Switch 1 game and having a billion loading screens, which would’ve been less of an issue without constantly having to ping-pong back and forth between Sol Valley and the other areas.

Overall I definitely still enjoyed it. It’s a solidly good game, it’s just so frustrating that it’s not an outright great game because there was so so so much potential here. Again I have to mention the visuals and music, because these aspects are amazing. I can only hope there will be a Prime 5 for Switch 2 at some point that builds upon the strengths and avoids repeating the weaknesses.

Re: Xbox Is Bringing Another Game To Switch 2 In 2026

It’s okay, I didn’t enjoy it as much as the critic reviews did. Starts off strong but don’t really keep the momentum going. It starts feeling very formulaic after a while, every level has the same repetitive core structure and enemies. For much of the game it’s more of a series of mini scenarios rather than one cohesive narrative thread. Once the story does finally start to gain a clear direction the best character catfish gets majorly sidelined and it focuses instead on the protagonist's very unlikeable grandma. It’s okay but didn’t live up to my initial expectations.

Re: Talking Point: Six Months Since Launch, How Would You Rate Switch 2?

Cakefish

I was tempted to give a 9 to justify my purchase, but I’d just be lying to myself. So I give it an 8. I find myself more enticed at the idea of what’s still to come rather than what we’ve already had.

The hardware is good, love the performance boosts, just the obvious downgrade in battery life coming from Switch OLED is never not going to be somewhat disappointing to me.

Sonic x Shadow Generations, Kirby & the Forgotten Land, and Metroid Prime 4 are the Switch 2 games that I’ve purchased and played since launch. Too early for me to from an opinion on the latter, but the former two are great games (I’m particularly fond of Kirby) and hopefully I’ll soon be able to say the same for Metroid too.

I was also pleasantly surprised by the updates to some of my favourite Switch 1 games such as Splatoon 3. It was good to see Nintendo fixing Nier Automata and many other backwards compatibility issues. Third party support overall has felt mixed though, with games like Once Upon a Katamari coming out without proper Switch 2 support which is just a shame to see honestly — room for improvement here.

It’s good. Very good. I’m looking forward to seeing how they will build on these solid foundations. Just needs that extra spice for me to be able upgrade my score to a 9 in time for the first year anniversary. Metroid Prime 4 could well be that secret ingredient, but if not let’s see what the first half of 2026 brings.

Re: More Switch Games Receive Compatibility Updates For Switch 2

Cakefish

Nier Automata being fixed is a huge deal. It means my entire Switch library is now fully compatible. I’m so relieved Nintendo have shown they truly care about backwards compatibility, they could’ve easily left these games in limbo forever but they seem to be on a mission to fix every last one and that’s great to see.

Re: Talking Point: Smashing Switch 2 Numbers Prove Nintendo's Strategy Is Super Effective

Cakefish

@Porco it’s a good point, will it be a repeat of Splatoon 3 that sold mad numbers early on and then just kinda suddenly petered out and so still (AFAIK) has yet to overtake Splatoon 2? I could foresee a potential situation where sales of Switch 2 are front-loaded by mega fans of original Switch, like most of us here in the comments lol

Time will tell, but I’m going to lean on the optimistic side for now. I think (and hope) they can keep this momentum going in years two and three. Though we’re never going to see a mid-gen pandemic bump like the original enjoyed, so maybe Nintendo will release a more spicy mid-gen upgrade to try to account for that.

Re: Talking Point: Nintendo Direct September Predictions - What Do You Hope To See?

Cakefish

Why on earth does the poll lack Metroid Prime 4?! My top answer is undoubtedly Metroid Prime 4!

I would also like to know more about Splatoon Raiders.

For third party, I’d like to see some upcoming 2026 games such as Code Vein 2 be announced for simultaneous release on Switch 2.

And some more info on The Duskbloods would be good, I’m a little wary about the multiplayer focus though.

Re: Talking Point: Is Hollow Knight: Silksong Too Difficult?

@SirVick fair enough, glad we cleared that up! There’s a difference between positively rewarding dedicated players with an achievement, badge etc. and actively punishing/shaming players using accessibility options. That’s why alarm bells were set off in my head when reading through your initial comment!
