Honestly, part of the appeal of Celeste for me was the art style and the story. I've tried Super Meat Boy but the story and art style did not sit well with me personally
Yeah, same (also Lena Raine's soundtrack was phenomenal) — I did enjoy SMB, but I was never a fan of that Newgrounds/Flash style of the mid '00s - it's one of the reasons Binding of Isaac never really landed with me.
One of the best videogame pieces I've ever heard is the 8-Bit Big Band's rendition of the SMW end theme - the way it goes big and keeps getting bigger towards the end is sublime
@JohnnyMind Worth picking up then? I must admit I completely burned out on New Horizons after finding it just a bit too slow and ultimately a bit limited in what you can actually do in it — I think I much prefer the likes of Stardew and Rune Factory when it comes to life/building/crafting sims
Yeah, this conversation crops up every so often — While I wouldn't lose too much sleep over a digital-only gaming landscape, I will certainly champion for having games on disc/cartridge if given the option.
@AmplifyMJ I did enjoy Horace, and appreciate the sheer amount of work that was put into it, but I think it suffered from being a bit too long and overly text/dialogue-heavy. Celeste I felt struck the perfect balance of gameplay and efficiently-told narrative, whereas Horace felt like a visual novel at certain points.
@Pod Yeah, outside of reinstating the sensor bar from the Wii, mouse controls are pretty much the next best thing for controlling such games — Mario Maker, House of the Dead, and World of Goo, for me personally!
@OorWullie 1 and 4 are, for my money, the best of the PS1 era. 2 is decent, 3 is a little overwrought, and 5 I think gets a lot of flak because it was so obviously churned out for a quick buck, but I actually didn't mind it. 6 had some cool potential, but it clearly released in an unfinished state, and the devs completely dropped the ball when trying to implement analogue controls into what was clearly originally designed around a very rigid digital d-pad control method. I'm genuinely curious to see how/if Aspyr goes to any length in improving the original game.
So yeah, to answer your question, I'd say the first collection would probably be best overall.
@Smithicus I'd say it was a chicken/egg situation; they weren't popular because no publisher would give them the time of day, so they had no chance of ever gaining exposure or traction. I remember reading mags at the time, in their "grey imports" sections always had these super interesting-looking anime styled game with rich storylines and wishing at least a few of them would squeak through customs
Lunar is made by GAME ARTS, the studio also responsible for the Grandia series, this is the very first time Eternal Blue will be officially playable in Europe.
Yeah, we got completely shafted when it came to JRPGs from the 16/32-bit era.
Also I didn't know about the connection to Grandia — that's given me even more reason to check this out, I loved that game!
I'm just as excited to see the reveal of the Switch Successor as I am for all the speculation and tiresome Reddit/Twitter clickbait to finally come to an end.
oh, surprise, the Switch online services are long gone because the newly announced Switch 3 won't be backwards compatible because of specs shenanigans, and they will redo the whole monthly retro releases thing from scratch.
Specs can (most of the time) be overcome — what I think you'll likely find being the biggest problem is licensing/rights shenanigans impeding games being reissued on modern gen consoles, often indefinitely. We've been seeing that kind of thing since the PS360 era, and it's such a bummer.
Boo! One of the reasons I didn't go in on a Switch right away was because it was clear they had no intention of migrating the dozens of VC purchases (one of the reasons I got a Wii in the first place) I'd made over the previous decade.
@DwaynesGames @Zeebor15 came here specifically to ask if Yars' Revenge was any good — thought it looked decent and been hovering over a sale purchase for a fair bit.
Love to see a straightforward graphical remake of FFIX which retains the same proportions/aesthetics/music of the original and without all the extra bloat of the FFVIIR games.
Why aren't y'all using the Nintendo website to purchase/download instead?
That's the only way I access the eshop, and even then I primarily default to my wishlist to see what's currently on sale (or manually adding new releases I know I'll be picking up sooner or later). Using the eshop like a normal storefront in its current form is an exercise in insanity.
@scully1888 @faint @FatWormBlowsASparky ditto — the Beamdog Bundle is £16 at the mo and I'm keen on getting caught up with Baldurs Gate before playing 3.
Yes, please, for the love of everyone's sanity, Nintendo just reveal the Switch Successor already! The daily glut of "leaks", rumours, and unfounded speculation these past few months has been utterly draining 🫠
I'm based in the UK so I certainly wasn't going to stay up til 3:30am watching it, especially when everything is served up in delectable bite-sized chunks well before my morning alarm even goes off.
I still find it amusing that the majority of these spurious "leaks" come from footage that seems to have been filmed on digital cameras circa 2003, when most people in 2024 have easily rippable 4K displays and broadcast-quality cameras on their phones.
@RareFan I'd imagine everyone feels aligned with the animation that were airing during the era they grew up with — there's definitely a wide spectrum of quality in every generation, but I certainly wouldn't write off some of the incredible animated shows that have released in the past decade or so — stuff like Adventure Time, Gravity Falls, Steven Universe, The Owl House, or more recently, Arcane, is phenomenally well-made.
I already had this on PS4, but I did double dip on the Switch version as it was only a fiver on Switch earlier this year.
Having played many of these games extensively on the original hardware, the lag is definitely noticeable, but I'm not sure if that's my TV or the Switch itself (or possibly both)
@Mariotag Yep, that too — after rolling credits, and then realising that I needed to do EVERYTHING possible in the game to get the true ending, including hunting down all the Rainbow Conches, that was when I noped out.
@Rob3008 Yeah, it felt like everyone's moveset and abilities (even the combos) reached their peak far too early on.
@rvcolem1 Oh Messenger was a treat wasn't it? It was on my list for a while, but when I heard it was from Sabotage, and loosely connected to SoS, I just had to give it a whirl.
@rvcolem1 I'll probably go back and revisit it at some point, but by the end of playing SoS, I was nowhere near as enamoured with it as I was when I started.
@Dm9982 yep, same — I gave it another go when they released the PS5 upgrade, but I just found myself drifting away and/or being distracted by other games. The base-building, while on paper sounds like it should be fun and satisfying, always felt very slipshod and more fiddly than it ought to be.
there’s a harsh disconnect when yet another cutscene is playing out and you’re trying to enjoy the excellent voice acting being spoken by dead-eyed, plastic models that don’t come close to conveying the same level of emotion in their voices.
I fired up Fallout 4 recently, and this became something of a dealbreaker, for me. And yeah I know it's a much older game, but the technical/performance aspect of a game's presentation (particularly in ones as narrative-focused as LiS/FO) can have a massive detrimental effect on immersion.
Going as far back as Final Fantasy X on PS2, say what you will about the performances - personally I thought they were decent - but what absolutely broke me was the lip-synching (or lack thereof). From what I've read, the actors weren't even given a video reference to work to, just a script, and it absolutely shows. I can't imagine the headaches that the sound editors must have had trying to get the audio to match.
