Honestly, part of the appeal of Celeste for me was the art style and the story. I've tried Super Meat Boy but the story and art style did not sit well with me personally

Yeah, same (also Lena Raine's soundtrack was phenomenal) — I did enjoy SMB, but I was never a fan of that Newgrounds/Flash style of the mid '00s - it's one of the reasons Binding of Isaac never really landed with me.

@AmplifyMJ I did enjoy Horace, and appreciate the sheer amount of work that was put into it, but I think it suffered from being a bit too long and overly text/dialogue-heavy. Celeste I felt struck the perfect balance of gameplay and efficiently-told narrative, whereas Horace felt like a visual novel at certain points.

@OorWullie 1 and 4 are, for my money, the best of the PS1 era. 2 is decent, 3 is a little overwrought, and 5 I think gets a lot of flak because it was so obviously churned out for a quick buck, but I actually didn't mind it. 6 had some cool potential, but it clearly released in an unfinished state, and the devs completely dropped the ball when trying to implement analogue controls into what was clearly originally designed around a very rigid digital d-pad control method. I'm genuinely curious to see how/if Aspyr goes to any length in improving the original game.

So yeah, to answer your question, I'd say the first collection would probably be best overall.

Re: Lunar Remastered Collection Brings Classic JRPG Series To Switch This April

@Smithicus I'd say it was a chicken/egg situation; they weren't popular because no publisher would give them the time of day, so they had no chance of ever gaining exposure or traction. I remember reading mags at the time, in their "grey imports" sections always had these super interesting-looking anime styled game with rich storylines and wishing at least a few of them would squeak through customs

Lunar is made by GAME ARTS, the studio also responsible for the Grandia series, this is the very first time Eternal Blue will be officially playable in Europe.

Yeah, we got completely shafted when it came to JRPGs from the 16/32-bit era.

Also I didn't know about the connection to Grandia — that's given me even more reason to check this out, I loved that game!

oh, surprise, the Switch online services are long gone because the newly announced Switch 3 won't be backwards compatible because of specs shenanigans, and they will redo the whole monthly retro releases thing from scratch.

Specs can (most of the time) be overcome — what I think you'll likely find being the biggest problem is licensing/rights shenanigans impeding games being reissued on modern gen consoles, often indefinitely. We've been seeing that kind of thing since the PS360 era, and it's such a bummer.

@RareFan I'd imagine everyone feels aligned with the animation that were airing during the era they grew up with — there's definitely a wide spectrum of quality in every generation, but I certainly wouldn't write off some of the incredible animated shows that have released in the past decade or so — stuff like Adventure Time, Gravity Falls, Steven Universe, The Owl House, or more recently, Arcane, is phenomenally well-made.

there’s a harsh disconnect when yet another cutscene is playing out and you’re trying to enjoy the excellent voice acting being spoken by dead-eyed, plastic models that don’t come close to conveying the same level of emotion in their voices.

I fired up Fallout 4 recently, and this became something of a dealbreaker, for me. And yeah I know it's a much older game, but the technical/performance aspect of a game's presentation (particularly in ones as narrative-focused as LiS/FO) can have a massive detrimental effect on immersion.

Going as far back as Final Fantasy X on PS2, say what you will about the performances - personally I thought they were decent - but what absolutely broke me was the lip-synching (or lack thereof). From what I've read, the actors weren't even given a video reference to work to, just a script, and it absolutely shows. I can't imagine the headaches that the sound editors must have had trying to get the audio to match.
