@Darthmoogle yeah, the PS1 was home to some absolute gems — many of which were cruelly denied us poor UK chumps. Luckily many of them are being trickled out slowly but surely — I just hope to Zeus that this TR collection holds up after being put through the remaster wringer.

@Serpenterror Ah I completely 180'ed on CrossCode — absolutely loved it at first, but around about the 45-50 hour mark it had slowly worn me down and I dropped it. I feel like I was so close to the end as well (beginning of Chapter 9), so I might pick it up again at some point, mainly for a sense of closure.

@dartmonkey

"In fact, it needn't be a totally new game — I'd be ecstatic to see an Out Run 2006: Coast 2 Coast remaster."

^ a thousand times this — my ex purchased OutRun 2 on their PSN account while it was still available, but I didn't realise I hadn't on mine until it had already been delisted! Pesky licensing wrinkles... This is why we don't have any ports of the After Burner series, isn't it? And also why they can't reissue the arcade port of Golden Axe, because it uses sound samples from movies...

@CodyDogg Not at all! If you've got a copy already you might wanna give it a shot and see if you vibe with it — you can adjust the difficulty on the fly, which the game even straight up says to use "if you're finding it inaccessible, or even unenjoyable" — just strap in for the long haul! I got my 2023 stats yesterday and it turns out that even though the game clock was around 45-50 hours, I'd actually spent 67 hours playing it! No wonder I was burned out...

@CodyDogg It's not that I didn't like it — at first I absolute loved it, it's got a lot going for it, in its design, music, and the premise/writing is really well done. It's just some of the mechanics in the actual gameplay become very wearisome the longer you get into it. It would have been a perfect 16-20 hour game, I think.

There's an elemental attack system which is fairly straightforward at first, but later on you're juggling four of them, and in some of the later dungeons you need to switch between them on the fly during battle, and in the middle of puzzles, which again, sounds great on paper, but some of the level design and controlling/aiming your character is so imprecise (there's a multi-levelled elevation to the map which, from a top-down perspective, can make navigation and platforming an absolute nightmare), and a lot of the puzzles depend on pixel perfect aiming/timing. Plus the dungeons are incredibly long; you don't so much feel a sense of accomplishment when you finish them, it's more relief that it's over.

I don't want to rag on the game too much though, like I say it's an imperfect masterpiece, and I very rarely drop a game unless it's absolute trash, I may even return to it one day (I was on chapter 9 of 10), but just be prepared!

Re: Talking Point: What Are The Worst Parts Of Your Favourite Games?

Andee

I absolutely love Stardew Valley, but the storage/inventory/crafting system could use an overhaul. It's fine early on when you don't have much in the way of items, but I was well into my third year and having to stockpile hundreds of different types of items in those teeny tiny 30-slot storage boxes becomes incredibly unwieldy - so much so that playing started to become a chore.

@nessisonett gonna try and keep this vague and spoiler-light — I've beaten the "final boss" like two or three times — I'm assuming there's more to discover? I've maxed out everything from the mirror, but there's a TONNE of weapon upgrades I've barely managed to acquire yet; they seem insurmountably expensive — so much so that I was wondering if I'm playing the game wrong...
