@jesse_dylan I've just finished playing FFVII Rebirth, and while I did enjoy it (mostly), I found the majority of the extra stuff a little unnecessarily drawn out, and it made me long for the efficiency of the original
@Serpenterror I imagine this might be the last time that SE releases these games (at least outside of a full-blown Remake/Rebirth-esque overhaul), so they're likely trying to rinse as much sweet sweet dough out of customers as they can.
I was a little late to the party but I absolutely adored Undertale, although I think I did the right thing by steering clear of the hardcore fanbase.
Saying that though, I think I'm good until Deltarune is complete before I go fully in on it — I tried out the first chapter when it first came to PC and really enjoyed it, but I'd rather not have to wait to play it in chunks.
it may not have all the content other versions have but this is the best way to play these games!
I imagine the reasoning is that they're more faithful to the originals, but yeah the extra content would be nice as a bonus. And yeah, as someone who doesn't want to faff about with emulators and mods, having them available on modern consoles (finally!) is highly appreciated. Had zero issues with the ones I've played thus far.
@Henchdog The GBA ones are deemed the most quintessential versions of 5 and 6, but they're not without their flaws — the sound is somewhat downgraded, and I believe that the US/EU versions have some censored art, so you might have to go down the rom/mod route. It's been a while, but I remember the PS1 version of 5 having some horrendous load times.
Slowly working my way through these — so far I've done 1 (simple but fun) and 2 (my god it's somehow even worse than I remember — dunno if I could have finished it without maps/the ability to turn off random encounters), 3 is up next — it'll be interesting to see it having only played the DS remake.
But yeah, three quid off a £15 game is hardly something to break out the expensive champagne over.
Yeah it all comes down to whether it's back-compat or not — If the new console isn't backwards compatible, it's gonna take a fair amount of new/exclusive games before I pick one up; my backlog right now is pretty vast.
Yeah, long cutscenes in general — MGS4 absolutely broke me; I never want to return to that game again (and unskippable cutscenes should be outlawed) — ideally you want to be playing the game while you're being exposited to.
Nintendo exec in 2017: "Okay everyone, we have the console, the joy cons, and a handful of games all ready to go. Oh and we're gonna chuck in this joy con charger as the final thing."
Nintendo minion: "Right, wait til the end of the console's lifespan and release the joy con charger as the final thing, got it!"
Nah, I think I'm all NES-ed out, now — having already tried most of these games extensively via VC/NSO and various emulators/barcades, and seen countless retro YouTube videos about them, I don't know how much longevity my interest will can hold for them outside of dipping into the NSO occasionally.
@Unit_DTH I never made it to the end of 1, so I was mercifully spared the more... esoteric parts of the plot, but what broke me was the core gameplay; it was just so slippery and imprecise it made combat and platforming an absolute chore — and (I'm not sure how this is the case as both Disney and SE are known for having amazing soundtracks) the music was just unbearable - the overly chipper track that plays around the town level that seems to loop after about ten seconds made me want to stick that keyblade through my ears
Oof — I really tried with the original KH1 on PS2 and just couldn't get into it, even though on paper it looked my absolute dream game. Don't know if I'd have it in me to attempt a full series playthrough, but I would imagine that (like with most things) release order would probably be best.
@JohnnyMind oh they're a lot of fun — KK1 is a genuinely heartfelt coming of age drama with some cool fights, but the focus is really on the characters rather than the martial arts. KK2 is an interesting development of the story, whereas KK3 is a pretty silly rehash of KK1, but enjoyable on a goofy, cartoony level.
@Daniel36 it's so good isn't it? It's way more heightened reality than the original movie, but I think that's the charm of it, for me; it plays out like a live action anime martial arts melodrama
I hope there's a Final Fight-esque bonus stage where you, as Daniel-san, beat the tar out of your own bicycle, and then another bonus stage immediately afterwards where you, as Mr. Miyagi, repair it.
@HeyNavComm it would have been perfect for them to have just put out a I-III Trilogy package, but hey I'll take it! Be nice to have I+II to look forward to
I'm pretty indifferent to the HD2D look (I'm more of a fan of the "glowy pixel art" look that Sea of Stars has), but this does look lush - can't wait to play it; hopefully should be done with SoS well in time for November!
Yeah, to echo a lot of sentiment already, trying to make sense of a Zelda timeline is an exercise in futility — it's not some grandiose, unwieldy comic-book style multiverse and it never attempted or claimed to be one. Doing so only serves to gatekeep against casual fans/players with the idea that you have to have played nearly 40 years worth of games in the "correct" order to fully appreciate it and, newsflash, nobody is really gonna do that.
@BigE typically with six-button fighters they put the two heavy attacks on the right shoulder buttons by default. Although it's been a while since I've played MvC, do they only use a four button layout?
That said, I hope to still see beta game leaks from old games. Seeing development cycles and ideas that were changed or unused etc is genuinely really cool.
Oh yeah, I find sites like TCRF endlessly fascinating, but daily "leaks" in news articles, which ultimately end up as nothing more than rumours that are more often then not, debunked, those have become white noise to me, now.
@Not_Soos Yeah, same — I like Street Fighter (particularly the Alpha series, which these games seem to use the same CPS engine as), but I've no real interest in the whole licensed crossover thing, but I'm stoked that they've actually been made available for the people that have so craved a legit way to access them. I had assumed these games were condemned to live in Licensing Limbo for the rest of eternity. Presumably some good egg over at Disney pulled all the relevant strings to make it happen.
Hell. Yes. I actually saw the first Investigations game in CEX the other week for like 70-something quid, kudos to Capcom for making this series available for modern consoles for a reasonable price.
I think my main issue with the current eshop versions of 1-3, with 1 especially, it had very juddery scrolling which genuinely made me nauseous if my eye strayed anywhere that wasn't the exact centre of the screen where the character was. In a way, I'm glad I powered through them though, it'll make me appreciate these HD-2D versions all the more. And I did find III a genuinely decent game, despite the technical issues.
@Serpenterror Yeah, as interesting as those versions were to play, 1 and 2 were pretty tough going; I will happily jettison them from my library to make way for these
I really enjoyed Treasure Trove, it being the first and only time I've experienced Shovel Knight — I feel like I've got everything I need from it. If they release this as like a bit of extra DLC then great, but I see no reason to buy the game all over again
Genuine question, as I'm not very familiar with the Persona/SMT series — do all of them get an updated version of the game a couple of years after the original, with no way to upgrade from the original version, or even carry over the game save? That seems like an absolute dealbreaker in turning me off a series.
I understand most people won't agree, but I find these "options" terrible.
Nah, i'm pretty much right there with you. The very fact that there are options at all just smacks of imperfect optimisation. Imagine if you were playing Metal Gear Solid on PS1, and you could only have music OR voice acting, but you couldn't have both?
@Duncanballs Yeah, same — on the rare occasion I do buy games on their initial release it'll be from Currys/Argos — at least they knock £5-10 off the retail price; Game always price them at full whack. If the game's been out for a few months (as is more likely the case), I'll nab it from CEX
