Because of Sonic DX and Sonic X, I hate the idea that Cream showed up after Sonic Adventure.
This and the fact that Sonic Rush before 2006 makes less sense.
This timeline is poorly thought out. Even Iizuka parroted for several years that there's a "Sonic World" and a human world, but there's no mention of that here.
I had the Wii version, to me Unleashed was the beginning of the end for Sonic.
So it's kind of bittersweet seeing this happen, I can finally play the HD version, but I'd much rather have better access to '06. Xenia cranks up my PC's resources skyhigh, while P-06 plays nothing like the original.
I think calling Nintendo and offering some sort of evidence allows them to transfer purchases to a new account.
But honestly, I've used my Wii since 2009, and the only thing that's broken is the disc drive and the clock battery. The fan finally broke last year and got it replaced within a week, this console is incredible!
My quick fix solution is to only make the games that are worth buying available, while keeping things like DK, Balloon Fight, obscure games like Kunio's Dodgeball and the like as NSO exclusives.
This prevents Nintendo from overpricing simplistic and outdated games and allows people to play long, complex games like OOT or RPGs without the pressure of sticking too long to 1 game and feeling like your subscription isn't worth it.
If you'd have to pick between PS2 or Wii I'd still go with the Wii, nvm the motion controls, you get widescreen, not having to deal with memory cards and you'd be on way superior hardware.
...it also fits right in with the other Nintendo games.
Perhaps the best aspect of the Shadow game was the expert mode (that was hidden behind some pretty harsh requirements to unlock) that turned the game into the typical linear gameplay without holding back.
If you wanna play Shadow, just grab a finished save and give expert mode a try. Certainly much more challenging than what you'd find in today's Sonic games.
@Clammy Not saying it played better, (though technically the GC controller automatically makes it better by a lot) I don't have any issue with the DC ver.
I'm saying DX is not "seriously flawed" for having so many differences, there's really no reason to go back to the limited Chao Garden or the less-detailed models when the version you can play on Nintendo hardware (for 2 gens straight) improves and adds so many things.
Where does the idea that different textures and lighting makes the game bad come from? Why aren't higher framerates preferred? Every Sonic game should be 60fps. Isn't it cool to be able to take your Chao from DX to SA2B? DX is the only legit way to play GG with multiplayer support, and the list goes on... The only reason I can imagine is nostalgia, but who even bought a Dreamcast? The console died off quickly for a reason.
@MirrorFate2 Oh well dang then! I could have sworn the DX I played had double the frame rate, faster loading times, improved character models and the updated chao garden system from SA2.
I guess it goes to show Sega should not be trusted.
@MirrorFate2 CrocLegendoftheGobbos is seriously flawed.
SADX and SA2B fixed and added a bunch of new stuff to the original games, including the cross-game content GBA feature, seriously underrated is more like it.
I hate the Rouge slander just because of her design, she's a cool character and it's like she's the only one who really seems to understand or even care about Shadow post-SA2.
I run this game on Xenia, a native PC build would be insane, my PC's CPU would love that, too.
A remake might as well be a different game, I don't see Sega respecting the source material, they didn't need to do anything in Generations but they somehow made it worse it seems, despite having Flynn, every line is just... bland and suddenly you're hit with a random callback to a past game. I don't know if his writing is incredibly limited by the game or if Flynn's just a one-trick pony.
I also don't want to see Lacey Chabert's and Jason Griffith's performance completely discarded for what will likely be awful lines delivered in dude-bro fashion by Roger and co.
Just get the game running, no loading times, stable 60 fps (both of these are a given in Xenia) and let the fans do the rest.
Huh? Is "LaunchScreen" the name Nintendo's using for channel banners now? That's strange, even on 3DS I believe they still referred to them as banners.
People wanting the chao garden don't know what they want.
A huge part of the chao garden's fun is that it gave new meaning to replaying the action stages, hunting for secret spots, enemies and collecting rings.
How the heck are you going to do this in a game that has you constantly going forward, blasting through insignificant enemies, without any desire to stop??
All you'd be left with is a bland sim game, that has no synergy with the main game (nor the GBA games.)
It's definitely a consequence of the faster emulation timings.
Remember Ocarina of Time on the GameCube? It would skip the credits sequence for a huge video file because the faster emulation made the video and audio go out of sync.
On Wii VC they added slowdowns, despite this, the credits desync is still pretty evident.
@LuigiBlood When you mentioned full spc700 without replacements, you mean the .pcm file, right?
That always made me curious why they did it like that, because during the Wii era I injected the heck out of the Super Metroid release and played through several big games like Earthbound without encountering any issues.
In fact, I actually think it introduces issues, in the SMW VC I could always hear some noise when entering levels but stopped after I swapped to a clean ROM.
FWIW I can back what you said about portable emulators, when there was a huge leak the GB/NES emulator used for 3DS VC had its source leaked, the code definitely makes it clear you can build it for Windows or 3DS, if you look hard enough there is a Windows build out there but with buggy sound. This emulator seems to be the same one used for the GB games in Kirby's Dream Collection, I can only assume it's also the one used on Wii U for the GB demos in Smash4.
@Coolmusic Wow, I used to read the Archie's and could spot Flynn's writing from a mile away, it's almost uncanny.
I never understood why but he always wanted to drive the point that Omega loves to destroy stuff and talks in a child-like manner, which is never expressed in the games. But in the few lines he has in Dark Beginnings it's made pretty obvious.
Here's something new to complain about! Who the heck writes these? I must assume Flynn, since Sega is incredibly predictable these days.
So, whoever wrote the shorts has no idea who Omega is, or what he's supposed to be like.
"I call dibs!" Omega is an ally of Shadow and Rouge, he is not a bag of jokes and one-liners, this character has only had a meaningful appearance in 3 games, in which his main purpose is to assist Shadow or Rouge. None of those games represent Omega as a dumb joke machine that only enjoys destruction.
See, the problem with this is that by the writer's logic Shadow should also be saying "This is the ultimate power!", or "I'm the coolest!" on every other line, based on the fact that that's what Shadow says in the games, that's how he writes Omega!
Plus, I feel the writer failed to read the room with these shorts, it's supposed to be a serious story this time around. No need to shoehorn jokes or push pathetic 'improvements' to a character's personality. Omega says "I call dibs!" in ep.2 and ep.3, excellent work there.
Preparations for one ShadowtheHedgehog, obviously.
Come on! It will forever bother me all the crappy copy-pasted characters or the people who actually care about characters like... I'd rather not say names but just look at the finished roster and tell me it doesn't look like a mess of lookalikes and unrecognizable franchises.
Surely, Sakurai should have predicted the year of Shadow. FWIW I will complain about Kazuya now, between Guilty Gear, SF, KoF, DoA, VirtuaFighter and Tekken — Tekken would be last on my list in terms of recognizable games, iconic characters, or general importance.
The chao garden is definitely something that helped make the regular gameplay replayable, especially if you wanted to make certain chao.
So, out of all the nonsense Iizuka says, this is actually not a bad thing.
The chao garden would get boring fast. And in the setup of a boost game like Generations it would be pretty mediocre since there's practically no room for exploration, you just go-go-ggggo-go.
Wow, Japan has a lot more Yugioh games from this era that I knew about.
I had The Sacred Cards which I enjoyed but is far from the authentic Yugioh experience.
Something funny I recall is that the EU release's Spanish translation has some really silly card names, I guess those cards hadn't been printed yet, the order of the words is often wrong so it changes the meaning. "Dragon Master Knight" becomes "Master of Soldier Dragon" which makes it sound like it's BEUM the master, instead of Black Luster Soldier.
They also don't translate the "B." that many cards used to avoid the word "black", so Red-Eyes is "B. dragón rojo-ojos" (which sounds as awkward as "Dragon N. Eyes of Red" would.)
Don't really care about fans posting memes. But I've always found the love for the official social media memes to be meh.
I think "self aware" jokes stop being funny after like the 3rd time. And then you get the odd post here and there, but when you see a picture of Blaze the Cat on a grassy field posted on April 20, you know you gotta draw the line somewhere.
I'd like to see some figures though, because I'll never believe posting garbage on your favorite SNS is enough to revitalize a popular franchise. I'd sooner believe that a new generation of -very- young fans appeared after playing the recent games.
Even though I was never a huge fan of SA2's Tails/Eggman mech levels, I still enjoyed playing in them, it was a time where ST could make anything look cool and fun to play in.
I don't think this is 'nostalgia goggles', and now I see it was them trying to please the fans who very much wanted Sonic to have a gun, so this was the best they could do.
As for the treasure hunting levels, if you can't find fun in flying around in a large 3D space, then Sonic Adventure games just aren't for you.
No matter how many times I play these games, I'm always taken aback by how PACKED with content they are.
I actually like reading criticisms for Sonic games, it's cool when your own problems with these games match with others, because it's not all perfect, it doesn't have to be. But when I hear people saying these games are just plain bad, I can't take them seriously.
The stage during the surf gimmick almost tricked me into thinking it was a Secret Rings level.
Disappointing if it's from Forces or Frontiers, as Night Palace would look amazing remade and match Shadow's aesthetics. Actually, most of Secret Rings' levels feel like dark, alien-like, apocalyptic situations.
Sega can't fool me tho, this is just a front for the wisps, and is just another way to make the stages easier to develop. It still looks like all the Shadow stages so far will shift to 2D gameplay, this is to me like the missing piece. Once Sega cracks the code on making a 3D stage with at least two minutes of uninterrupted action again, is when I'll accept what they're selling.
I also find the Advance series to be better games than Mania.
Mania has long-ass levels and over-designed stage gimmicks. It's a fun game, sure, but having to play through the most annoying Sonic levels (Stardust Speedway, Metallic Madness, Lava Reef) is just... why?
Advance games have a lot of variety in the 3 games but they all seem to keep their acts at a decent length and without sacrificing exploration.
Advance 3 gets a lot of flack for the stages, and some of them are just bizarre, but the aesthetics are absolutely sublime and don't tire you out after playing just 1 level.
@Mz3player This is the attitude I wish more people had, I played it for the first time last year through Xenia, and the only thing that truly made me go "why is this like this???" was the ball puzzle.
Everything else was so enjoyable, though. 4Kids obviously seals the deal for me.
So many iconic lines in this thing. I'm definitely the kind of guy that triggers the hint marker just to hear the voices.
If you die like 3 times in the Egg Wyvern boss you get Sonic going: "it looks like Eggman's cockpit is located inside the mouth' line which is gold, yet delivered with such sincerity that is just too good for words.
Oh man, here we go again, I know it's no use to say this since people here are either pro-P-06 or hate 06 in general. But here goes...
I think the people who are truly delusional are the ones that block off this game just for dumb things like Princess Elise, or loading screens, the frustrating ball puzzle, or memes. This game has nowhere near the same rep as it has in Japan for a reason.
It had a budget, impressive visuals (compared to previous games), challenging levels, it is brimming with content and I would much rather side with this game than the low effort Sonic Colors/Lost World/Forces --all these titles that have 1 minute levels, no challenge, levels that are 2.5D, it's ridiculous that people have preferred this junk for more than a decade over what was offered to us back in just 2006.
My take on P-06: I was super disappointed with P-06 because it removes the stuff that I liked about the original — precise platforming, every character accelerates too quickly, especially Silver. In the original the mach speed stages exist for a reason: -going fast- the rest of the game is about destroying enemies, timing your jumps correctly, collecting rings, all under a decent enough time to get an S rank.
People need to invite frustration into their gameplay experience a little bit more. What's the point of paying $60 on a game you can finish in a day without breaking a sweat?
@Ryoth I think he meant Balan, though Yuji Naka had not been involved with Sonic for at least 15 years when Balan released.
Basically, they hired him as lead, kicked him off silently, Naka sued, Square responded by revealing he had sold shares based on info he wasn't supposed to have which is apparently illegal in Japan, so he got arrested. I think he's out now, but his social rep is like at 2%.
@N8tiveT3ch I've certainly made my peace with it, in my headcanon the kiss is symbolic, in the same way the snap is in Thanos's gauntlet, or the eccentric laughter Mozart has in the Amadeus film.

It's been quite a while since I've played a PR game, but I do think there are some decent titles out there.
In particular:
MMPR isn't just a repetitive beat-em-up, it has some challenging platforming too, but isn't frustratingly difficult either.
SPD is similar to MMPR but each ranger has a gimmick needed to finish the stage.
LR is basically the SNES MMPR game in 3D, but with voice acting from the cast, and glorious PlayStation music that is pure bliss.

Re: Sonic X Shadow Generations Continues To Show Love For Sonic 06
My take on P-06:
I was super disappointed with P-06 because it removes the stuff that I liked about the original — precise platforming, every character accelerates too quickly, especially Silver.
Re: Sonic X Shadow Generations Showcases Side-By-Side Of Old & New Stages
Too bad they're not bold enough to let you switch to Rouge or Omega for the Heroes stage. Kingdom Valley also has a Rouge section iirc.
Wait... is this it though? What about a ShadowTH stage — Sky Troops/ Final Haunt/ Digital Circuit you can't do this Sega!
Re: 'Emio - The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club' Launches On Switch Next Month
It's funny, I didn't even bother looking at the teaser because I don't care for horror.
...but knowing it's Famicom Detective Club, this suddenly become almost as interesting as the Another Code Recollection announcement.
Looking forward to it now, but then what about the Satellaview title?
Re: Spark The Electric Jester 3 Is A High-Speed Indie Platformer Dashing To Switch This Month
I'm convinced people forgot what Sonic Adventure and SA2 were like.
They were action games where you could go fast but didn't need to. You had great control of your character, it wasn't just about going forward!
This game on the other hand, clearly is about blasting through everything and even has boost. Awful comparison.
This looks closer to Sonic Forces.
Re: Video: What Order Should You Play Kingdom Hearts?
I played it in the worst order possible and still ended up enjoying the series.
358/2 Days
Chain of Memories on the GBA
BBS
Re:coded
DDD
KH1 (still playing it)
I think 358/2 Days gives you a good intro to the series, it leaves you wanting more and jumping to the others certainly feels like an improvement.
Re: Video: Sega Shares 'A Brief History Of Shadow The Hedgehog'
I like that most of the footage is from Sonic 2006.
Re: Sonic Team Boss Really Wants To Make A New Sonic The Hedgehog RPG
@Ryoth I think he meant Balan, though Yuji Naka had not been involved with Sonic for at least 15 years when Balan released.
Basically, they hired him as lead, kicked him off silently, Naka sued, Square responded by revealing he had sold shares based on info he wasn't supposed to have which is apparently illegal in Japan, so he got arrested. I think he's out now, but his social rep is like at 2%.
Re: Sonic Team Boss Really Wants To Make A New Sonic The Hedgehog RPG
@N8tiveT3ch I've certainly made my peace with it, in my headcanon the kiss is symbolic, in the same way the snap is in Thanos's gauntlet, or the eccentric laughter Mozart has in the Amadeus film.
