I think some are quite fine. I got Melee late in the GameCube's life because I would always rent the game--fighting/party games always seemed like a one time thing, but when GC was on the way out it became obvious I needed to get Melee to play it all the way.
The boxart had a "Best Seller" stamp on it, I didn't think much of it but later I found Melee went through some revisions, and I kinda like knowing I have the latest "final" version, although sometimes newer doesn't always imply it's better.
The only other Player's Choice I have is Sonic Mega Collection which luckily looks good with the yellow background.
As someone who loves GBA, and definitely wanted a 3DS when it released, but couldn't get it before the price cut... Because honestly, it's ridiculous to go the effort of buying a DSi only for Nintendo to release a year later a pricier console. Of course I wasn't gonna buy another console so soon.
...It was impossible to get this thing back then, I always hated knowing that it could play GBA, and Nintendo gave away games for it and never used the feature again.
It really wasn't a killer feature, but simply knowing there's stuff in your expensive gadget you can't use just because Nintendo doesn't let you is irritating.
@Wexter Old console limitations should not be considered, when FE1 for Switch came out people found the original ROM and some non-NES files that consist of the translations.
This way Nintendo was able to add variable width text, which fan translations haven't been able to achieve due to limitations of the game.
Advance 2 is easily my favorite, the design of literallyeverything is just wonderful, it's definitely one of the most charming of all the Sonic games.
SA3 loosened the controls, but is around as great and straight up epic with the stage designs, Chaos Angel is simply beautiful.
I've played all of them for years, and I wouldn't easily spot a specific game being more difficult or have less platforming, it's all pretty varied, which is why I see them as 1 huge game.
I don't understand what Sega is thinking, paying so much for these games that have been available so many times in the past, they're not nostalgic anymore.
The decompilation projects as well as Angel Island Revisited overshadow this release. The one time Sega should've issued a c&d.
I will always be a fan of Yuji Naka for being a great developer and being involved with literally every Sonic game I like. I'm not interested in his personal affairs or work-practice.
But I honestly don't understand the criticism with sabotaging X-treme, there was nothing in the video previews that suggested it was any good.
Man did us all a massive favor.
As for the topic, of course SE did wrong, I don't doubt it for a second.
Whitehead's not involved? Which is fine, I remember when Headcannon released a demo of their engine on Wii (then called EngineO2, or something) I had never seen a fan engine so accurate to the Genesis games, so Sonic 3's in good hands either way.
@sanderev What you said is not wrong but the 3DS hardware is more involved in GBA mode than having much to do with DS mode.
It's weird to read 3DS supports GBA because of DS bc, when really it was just Nintendo adding the missing hardware and patching up the rest with 3DS-only hardware.
@Specter_of-the_OLED What makes you say that? 3DS' emu that was baked into the VC games could barely run anything, and the ambassador games used identical GBA hardware.
It's interesting that Switch and Wii U stay in sync, it goes to show that even though the emulation is different (presumably because the developers are different) the practices are still the same.
Or maybe efficient N64 emulation is janky and this will always be the result. But it really seems to be that Nintendo wants the games to feel slightly enhanced, otherwise they'd keep the original resolution.
I made an exception just for this movie and went to my local theater for the first time since Sonic 1.
I enjoyed the film very much, I didn't care much for the oh so needed human-only scenes, but I tried to have fun with them anyway.
People are saying Knuckles stole Tails' thunder but who really cares, Tails has always been more of a side character he shouldn't have to lead the film.
What's interesting about Earthworm Jim 2 is that back in the Wii era and the Wii U era the VC emulators used couldn't play certain sounds in the game. They went the extra mile for this game, probably. Or... they pulled a Pokemon Yellow.
The 3DS VC emu couldn't do the Pikachu cry in Yellow's title screen, they actually didn't fix this in the 3DS release of Pokemon Yellow, instead they hook into the part where the sound is heard and then play the sound from a separate recording, how lame, yet awesome is that?
It's weird to think that if this movie had been made a decade ago it would have by default an action platforming game adaptation on PS3/360/Wii/DS/PSP.
@RubyCarbuncle Well, I can't expect everyone to care.
But the Wii Shop being down means more than "no more redownload ability" it means you can't view the electronic manual of every WiiWare game, some could even have info that you can't find elsewhere. Now every WiiWare game has a link that leads to nothing.
You can't system update without a disc.
Homebrew users are pushed to a corner since they can't access NUS to download system files legally anymore and would have to rely on specific game discs if they want to use certain homebrew. (Or to download those files illegally.) This is even more problematic with vWii which doesn't have a disc equivalent for those system files.
But there are even more advantages to NUS, like using Dolphin legally.
Shinobi III might be a bit clunky to play nowadays but if you master it (much like Sonic 06) it becomes a great game, with epic music to boot.
It's interesting to see Ristar so low, in Sonic Mega Collection it's described as a masterpiece, and I honestly prefer it to them having included The Ooze and Comix Zone which don't fit with Sonic's visuals and themes, but I've never played it for more than an hour.
Batman Forever (SNES) is easily the worst game on my entire collection, I don't think I've ever made it past the first area.
Lego Batman came out at that time where I was moving away from childish type of games, if it had come out on the GC I think I would've been all over it. Looking at some videos now it sure does look fun, sigh.
@BulbasaurusRex Have you played it? The controls are nothing like the Adventure formula. Sonic handles like a tank, especially if you gain the slightest speed. The spindash is stiff and leaves you with no speed gain, rail grinding is automated as heck and is only there to remind you that at one point in SA2/Heroes grinding was risk-vs-reward fun, the homing attack has none of the satisfaction of crashing into the enemy and instead requires you to wait for the reticle to beep, or wait even more to do combos.
I don't mean to sound arrogant but I've seen other people compare LW to the better 3D Sonic games and I just... don't see it.
After watching the video I can see why this wasn't in the GC/Wii/WiiU releases, it's pointless no one in their right mind would spot this difference unless they were carefully analyzing the game and comparing with a real n64.
The sound crackling in OOT whenever you open the pause menu stands out way more than this.
@Specter_of-the_OLED Unrelated to you perhaps, anyone could use messaging to get their friends to play online with.
The browser allowed easy access to any game's secrets or walkthroughs directly from the console, that's an incredible feature to have! It even enabled instant chatting with anyone.
Netflix during the Wii's run had several titles based on games, any diehard Mario fan would have appreciated having access to the Mario cartoon that was on there. For me it was Sonic (all three of them were there.)
I don't deny the Switch has content but it's definitely lacking in many areas that previous consoles weren't. I also very clearly said "buy" and you can't buy SMW or ALTTP on Switch... or Chrono Trigger for that matter.
Yet somehow even though the Switch has more titles, the GC and Wii library already had plenty of Dreamcast and PSone titles, many not on Switch, SA1/SA2/PSO/Crazy Taxi/MDK2/Skies of Arcadia all come to mind.
It's still great that Switch has some popular titles you can buy that weren't on Wii or Wii U, such as the FFs after VI. But I still see the selection being worse on Switch, especially because 99% of the SNES/N64 titles can only be "rented."
Dual Destinies, honestly the most lackluster entry. They seemed to have dialed the references and modern lingo up the wazoo, the side characters ignore all logic to be their dumb little exaggerated character, counted more than 20 typos so far, and Blackquill suuuuucks.
Having a great time tho, Apollo x Junie really cute.
Pointless trivia: Crunchyroll on Wii came out in 2015, and lasted about 4 or 5 months before it stopped working and was eventually taken down by Nintendo when they shutdown all streaming sites.

Hooray for homebrew, I guess.

Very disappointing knowing Ryan and Jason were willing to come back, this new voice sounds like another Roger, meh.

Re: Best GameCube Games
Something's wrong with this list, it's missing Sonic Heroes.
1. Sonic Adventure DX
2. Sonic Heroes
3. Melee
4. SA2: Battle
5. Shadow the Hedgehog
6. Sonic Riders
7. Wind Waker
8. Mario Sunshine
9. Twilight Princess
10. Fire Emblem 9
11. TTYD
Priorities, man.

Terrible voice for Sonic.

@Dr_Lugae If there's anything from Yuji Naka left in Sonic 06 it's probably the good stuff. He isn't even credited.

Re: Video: MVG Investigates The Switch Online GBA Emulator Leak
I can't believe I went through that video, all MVG did was relay existing information.
Literally he could have just written on Twitter: there are no hints of a homebrew emulator being used, so a leak is more likely.
Re: Poll: Which Wii Sport Is The Best Wii Sport In Wii Sports (And Which Is The Worst)?
Table tennis is insanely good, but I like bowling and regular tennis just for the sound alone.
I think sword fighting would've been truly great if you could move your character manually, it should've been an option.

Re: Square Enix Officially Announces Kingdom Hearts IV
This new setting makes it seem like there won't be traditional Disney worlds, but maybe they could use it to adapt the awful liveaction remakes.
Suddenly I just want to see how heartless or similar enemies could work in a world based on Encanto.
We still don't have a Robin Hood world! This is where a smaller scale spinoff game would shine through on 3DS hardware or such.

Why is no one talking about the stealth closure of NUS, Wii, and DSi shops? It's been days already.
Re: Feature: The 20 Best Kirby Copy Abilities
I've used computers for almost 18 years and I don't have a clear idea what "control+k" is supposed to do here.
I love the noise from the Spark ability (from the GBA games) I guess it's hard to pick just one so... the Smash ability from Amazing Mirror.

Re: Zelda: Majora's Mask Cutscene On Switch Apparently "More Accurate To N64" Than Wii Virtual Console Emulation
Adding a per-game hack to fix this scene is not any different than Wii/WiiU/3DS VC using a different emulator each game.
At the end of the day it's the same emulator with the needed changes patched in.
Re: Nintendo Appears To Have Improved Switch Online's N64 Emulation
So all that "Nintendo hired one guy for one emulator for each n64 Wii VC game" that spread thanks to people like MVG was all massive bs.
Nintendo just got lazy, and it seems they noticed.

Xenoblade is the only title worthy here, let's be honest.
Also, I'm used to NL hating on Sonic but praising LW? Easily the worst 3D Sonic game for any fan, it's super lackluster and lazily made.
Re: Soapbox: Why Can't Nintendo Offer Both Virtual Console And Switch Online?
My Wii has outlived the Wii U gen, all the current gen and will likely go on for more gens.

Once Nintendo shuts down NSO it's byebye to "your" retro games.
