As unfortunate as this is, I would never bother with these games unless they had something of interest in them, like the ones that have the 4Kids cast in them.
@Simu001 IMO 3D Sonic got ruined when they tried to make it as idiot-proof as possible.
It's so restrictive that there isn't much room to experiment.
The homing attack is pointless ever since they added the targeting circles, it's practically impossible to mess it up, completely removing any satisfaction.
I think the games that ask a lot out of the player are the better Sonic games.
Frontiers at least made the effort to implement a combat system, but as long as the 2D sections remain and the 3D environment is just dull, barren land, or "lane gameplay" it's hard to be interested in it.
@romanista Oh, I meant that because PC emulators at the time required a lot of power they would never run well on the GameCube, see VBAGX, it barely runs well on the Wii.
I remember hearing about MvDK thru kiosk demo discs, it's kinda wild that Nintendo had this game running on the GameCube back in 2004 where PC emulators still required an excessive amount of power to reach full speed.
That work made its way into Pokemon Box, so they certainly got mileage out of it, even though only 3 people actually used it to play Ruby/Sapphire on the TV.
@squiddu-real Chill, it's no use getting worked up. I believe they're (or at least Whisper) is based off Splatoon designs like Pearl and Marina, Whisper is usually paired up with Tangle, has squinting eyes, and a gun to boot.
The characters' designs clash with the official crew by having too many details, plus being based on animals that don't have an official Sonic look.
It just looks too much like these characters were made to appeal to a very specific part of the fandom, to be blunt, the ones who are into pairing up the characters, the fans who like to get to the not-so-safe-for-work territory.
Have a look at the cover of issue #3 of the Tangle & Whisper spinoff, and tell me it wasn't designed with the intent to fuel those people. The cover depicts a close-up of Whisper taking off her mask in a dark light, showing cleavage, and being surrounded by squid-like tentacles.
I rest my case, if you think otherwise that's fine, but it's hard to see these characters in a neutral way, especially with Flynn flexing them in the latest mainline game.
The og 3DS, it stands out best, and the black part surrounding the top screen blends well with titles that have a different aspect ratio, the 3DS has a lot of those.
I've read a couple of IDW issues on the kindle app, I've never liked these characters, they tick too many of the wrong boxes.
They should've stuck with Tangle instead of trying to shove another one down fans' throats, Whisper especially feels poorly designed as there's too much of a resemblance between Splatoon.
I wish Iizuka or whoever approves of these decisions (like putting SpongeBob in the game) would cut the series some slack and think about the value the series has and the quality it should aspire to have.
If you buy both, I think there should be an option to trade with yourself, 3DS VC certainly didn't have that.
You can't really tell from the video if the visuals are the same as NSO, I wouldn't want to play these with the color "correction" since these games already use decent colors anyway.
I had it on the GBA, it couldn't quite grab me as well as ALTTP did so I unfortunately sold it to EB games for peanuts.
I don't know, I think even after all these years it's a still a bit too much work to enjoy. Perhaps what I liked about it was the fact that it was on a lighter gray cartridge, so it stood out between my GBA and GBA Video carts.
@squiddu-real It's like I said, when the Archie comics got abruptly discontinued, the IDW series quickly introduced these 2 characters and in practically no time, they got put in a mobile game, are featured in most of the covers, they have their own spinoff comics, and are even mentioned in the latest mainline game.
Props to Flynn or whatever, but to the loyal fan it sucks this kind of attention never happened back then in any capacity.
@rvcolem1 IMO that's part of what makes him so cool, to Nintendo fans he's like the villain in a story that later becomes a powerful ally.
That's my headcannon for the climax of the Subspace Emissary.
Sonic was designed to rival Mario, but since SEGA's exit of the console market, he no longer serves that purpose, and he has actually helped sell Nintendo consoles, but people are really into the rivalry stuff.
He has the style of Michael Jackson, the nostalgic feel of Santa Claus, and most importantly: the Segata Sanshiro seal of approval!
But seriously, if you need to find the right game, try one of the Sonic Advance titles, if you find they're not it, you'd at least get something out of it in the form of catchy af GBA tunes.
Since Super Nintendo was my introduction to games I can't share the same sentiment. Super Mario World is still a wonderful game to look at and a joy to play.
NSO retro games don't come with manual scans, right? That's too bad, considering the Wii U had them.
When I was a kid I loved looking at the FE Sacred Stones manual for the profiles and the SEGA ads on Sonic Advance. It was before I had easy internet access tho.
I hate the fact that voice actors are "easily replaceable" but after Bayo, I think it's sometimes for the better, $4K was good enough for this game, and I think she shouldn't have asked for more knowing that... well... she's easily replaceable.
I still find it crazy how this isn't a thing in Japan. Ikue Ohtani who's done Pikachu's voice from the very beginning recently reprised one of her older roles just to advertise the Hirakata theme park.
I can give you my 2 cents on it. Most of Nintendo's previous BC support have always had the same problem, once you enter BC mode, you lose access to almost all the new hardware, and the only way to restore the console to its original state is to reboot (automatic off and on.)
It's possible Nintendo wanted to avoid this inconvenience since it also tends to allow easier modding as well.
The BC of the Wii, Wii U, and 3DS greatly helped in their respective homebrew scenes. (WiiU was just Wii hb out of the box, it didn't actually benefit WiiU hb but surely, this was still a negative for Nintendo.)
Surprised there wasn't a Mario balloon before but Pokemon kinda fits the role better since it has a gazillion movies, episodes and toys. I think it's been present on the parade more than Sonic.
Gotta hand it to Sakurai for not going the easy route and just turn the game into crossover madness, selling each character for $1.99 or $4.99 for a stage+music!
Tho' I wouldn't object to Sonic Riders content. You know Jet's the legendary wind master, right?
Not a big NES fan, my first experience was the LoZ GBA version, and the game simply didn't click with me.
But I found some appreciation for the NES after buying SMB3 on the Wii VC.
The dark image sucks, but the amount of advantages you got on Wii were pretty worth the 5 dollars. And I guess what's interesting about the Wii version is that you can't really replicate it with emulators — the very specific way some visual glitches are fixed here, the smoothed out screen flashes, stuff like that.
I like that the western one tells you it's 32 megs, that's 4 megabytes! One megabyte more than EarthBound!
Curiously, the games that actually had an unusual size like Tales of Phantasia or Star Ocean don't tell you at all... because it's useless information!
@Baker1000 It's a stylized representation, pretty silly if you ask me.
The credits text was built into the executable, so it always has to appear in RAM, this is quite insignificant compared to say Wii's Tales of Graces, which does the same but for hundreds of item names, item descriptions, attack names, tutorials, etc.
Back in 2014, I tried WiiMednafen with the SpyKids 3D glasses for a solid 5 minutes before never using it again.
Just think of all the money/resources Nintendo could have used to bring out a rare GBA title, or a GC game that required special attention... but instead they use it for this garbage.
I checked out some of the banter between characters and it seemed awful to me.
Not because it's cheesy but because the voice acting has no connection to the characters and feels pretty forced and soulless.

Eventually, they caught on, and nowadays all the patches are documented on Wiibrew's MIOS page, worth a read.
This is different from nintendont, where it does a ridiculous amount of patching to a single game just so it behaves in Wii mode.
Wii BC only does a few patches for no more than 5 games.
I was there, I was there on the day Nintendo committed the worst sin upon the gaming world, they released SMW on Wii with direct button mapping... for the GameCube controller.
The nightmares are still etched to my WaveBird. People sure have it easy now, well kinda.
During the Wii days, devs weren't allowed to increase the size of savefiles beyond the starting size, so games like Brawl had to create a 16 MB save for saving replays, stages, and screenshots to the system, space that 99% of players never used.
Many SNES VC contain an unused copy of the game's ROM completely uncompressed.
None of the GB/GBC/GBA/NES titles on 3DS VC use compression for the ROM. And the ones for NES and GB all come with the GBA bios.

Winter Games on the Wii really is the best one.

Re: Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds Reveals Three More Free DLC Characters
I will just assume red bird is one of the Flickies from Sonic 3D Blast, and the Yakuza is whomever Sega gets extra funding from.
Arle is the real star here, and you can tell since the Japanese version of the trailer puts her front and center.
Re: Poll: Box Art Brawl - Duel: Tales Of Symphonia (GameCube)

Can't beat that.
Re: Review: Tales Of Berseria Remastered (Switch) - QoL Tweaks Make A Brilliant Game Even Better
Outside of Symphonia and Graces I have little interest in the Tales of series but I must admit the article's banner/thumbnail made me click.
That's one sick design!

Re: Sonic Racing Open To Including More 'Deep Cut' Characters From Extended Sonic Universe
Iizuka tends to say a lot of bs.
I've always disliked Tangle and Whisper since they represent the awful ending of the Archie run right before it could reach issue 300.
But people still buy the new comics so that's the only reason they're really there.
A lot of people seem to like the Sonic OVA, why not put Sara in the game then?
In fact, if Sally Acorn, Cosmo, Danica Patrick, or Mario characters get in, then I would surely eat my words like Shadow in SA2.

I remember borrowing Radiant Dawn from a friend, after beating PoR, and thought "how cool, you can import your GameCube save!"
...It crashed the game. Yeah, apparently you weren't able to import stats from saves that were set to easy.
But hey, it was still a great idea, wish more Wii games made use of that feature, would've been great for Pokemon and the Chao Garden.
I also think it would've been one heck of an easter egg if Brawl did something special if it found a Melee save.

Re: Poll: How Many New Games Do You Buy In A Year?
The last big game I bought was Nier Automata. And only 'cause the game had been on my mind since its 2017 release.
Honestly, I don't see the point of spending so much money on games you lose interest in pretty quickly.
There are far too many good games out there that I'd much rather play over the new stuff.
Re: Round Up: The Reviews Are In For Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds
I've sort of moved on from Sonic games, but I'm happy it's enjoying some success.
It's still incredibly odd they went with 2 deadly six characters when there are like a gazillion better choices.
Racing games always lose their magic rather quickly imo, but I still hold Riders on the GameCube in high regard.

@countzero Wii BC is surprisingly complex.

Heck yeah, it has multi dub support.
Oddly, the English track sounds kinda low compared to the LATAM one.
But this is great, 1-3 are probably the best ones.
Re: Talking Point: With Bigger GameCube File Sizes, Should Nintendo Let Us Download Individual NSO Games?
Nintendo are the kings of wasting storage space.
During the Wii days, devs weren't allowed to increase the size of savefiles beyond the starting size, so games like Brawl had to create a 16 MB save for saving replays, stages, and screenshots to the system, space that 99% of players never used.
