Re: Sonic Frontiers Director Confirms Ian Flynn Will Write "New" DLC Story

AlienX

@MegaVel91 I don't see how that's any different from acknowledging your own OCs, using phrases from the 90s cartoons, and mentioning a character from Boom.

It's cool when they compare plot details to previous games like they did when they namedrop Tikal, but surely a line must be drawn when they have to pull outdated character profile info just for a cheap nod (i.e. Amy's fortune-telling.)

If you like this stuff, I respect your opinion. I'm not trying to ruin it for others, just hearing Sonic saying things like "I knew a time traveller once" which contradicts at least 6 previously established facts is enough for me to disregard the story altogether.

If I say this stuff in Sonic circles everyone would go bonkers, but criticizing Sonic stuff on NL is accepted and encouraged.

Re: Sonic Frontiers Director Confirms Ian Flynn Will Write "New" DLC Story

AlienX

Oh, Flynn is writing? Prepare for every character to speak in the form of callbacks and winks to obscure Sonic content that has nothing to do with the games.

"Hey Sonic, look at that cat-shaped giant robot!"

"A cat? So, it's like that girl I saved from Metal Sonic back in the day."

"Who?"

"Tails, you don't remember Sara? She's the president's daughter."

"Is this from like, when Chris was around?"

"Uhhhh, no."

"Great talk, Sonic."

Re: Anniversary: Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade First Launched 20 Years Ago Today

AlienX

I remember this one was the last GBA game I hunted for at Babbage's and eb games after falling in love with Sacred Stones, but I never found it.

VBA solved that problem, though. So I always consider this game like my personal gateway to emulation. I've never actually finished it, 'cause playing on PC sucks and I later lost interest.

Too bad the Wii U release didn't come with the bonus items from the Mario Kart disc.

Re: Poll: Box Art Brawl: Final Fantasy IV (DS)

AlienX

@SpaceboyScreams As someone who has played only the SNES (Wii), GBA version, and a bit of the DS remake... I cannot suggest a "best" way to play it since every version introduces improvements... and flaws.

But I don't regret playing the Wii VC version, it's the same crappy translation as SNES but they patched out some flashing effects on top of making the whole game dim. But playing on Wii is nice because The After Years is there too.

Then I would suggest GBA, it has worse quality audio but a better translation, better pixel art and a unique intro animation that's not found anywhere else afaik. It also has some slowdown that SNES doesn't have.

Then finally the DS version, it has 3D visuals so it's a very different experience IMO, but has multiple difficulty settings, an epic cgi intro that looks 'ok' on the DS screen, but it also has probably one of the more accurate translations you can find of the game.

The PSP version is decent but I wouldn't bother with it, it's the same feel as the Ace Attorney Trilogy on 3DS, you get the same visuals... but without the iconic 'pixel' look, it just looks ugly and muddy. Like using the scale2x filter on pixel art. Not my cup of tea.

Re: Review: Pokémon Stadium - The Original 151 Brought To Life With Style

AlienX

This was one of the first N64 games I played, having rented it from blockbuster back in the day.

It was the coolest thing to send off random pokemon but I think the magic vanished pretty quickly.

It's definitely a N64 game, that's for sure.

But you know, I can't help feeling that this game wasn't selected for VC during the Wii or Wii U era because of the lack of GB support. Now, in an Iwata-less Nintendo there's no need to care so they bring out this incomplete re-release.

Maybe the feature will come later, like the fog in Ocarina of Time did.

Re: Feature: Best Rabbits In Games

AlienX

I miss Cream, even in Sonic Rush she played an important part in the story.

After that, Sega was like "off to the vault of forgotten characters with you!"

I know the dub of Frontiers mentions her, but like, they also mention SATAM, these callbacks are as useful as Sonic is underwater.

Re: Feature: What's The Best Way To Play Super Mario Bros. In 2023?

AlienX

Someone already beat me to it but there's that relatively obscure version of the Wii VC version that changed up the question blocks with [25] and gave it a more unique icon on the system menu.

That's my pick, since it's pretty different to everything and Wii VC plays really nice with the wiimote. The dark colors aren't as offensive as on WiiU. And goes for the unfiltered look.

Re: Indie Dev Headcannon Confirms It Helped Sega Update Sonic Origins Plus

AlienX

After 16 years, Sega finally did something I wanted: make Amy playable again.

The fact that it had to be in a "Plus" version and not there from the start is laughable, because featuring these games that we've had access to since forever does not make this package serviceable, if it didn't have Sonic in the name it could easily have tanked.

If anything though, it sucks how fragmented the characters are now, why isn't Amy in Mania? Why isn't Mighty and Ray in Origins?

Why not Metal Sonic? The sprites are already there! Yes, I just want more playable characters.

There's not much you can do to change up the original games, this is the best way to re-enjoy them. That's why the Advance games are so incredible, you have options and the game never gets stale.

Re: Poll: How Many 3DS Consoles Have You Owned?

AlienX

OG black/turquoise which is great, I love the black on the front top screen makes it feel like the screen "adapts" to the various aspect ratios used by playing older games.

Link Between Worlds XL which has the triforce on one side and the lorule ver. on the other. Never beat the game but hey DS looks great on the way bigger screen.

Missed out on NEW models but SNES games aren't much of a selling point, and Xenoblade was better on Wii, evidently.

Re: PSA: You Only Have One Week To Purchase 3DS And Wii U eShop Games

AlienX

@MythTgr The term "native" gets thrown a lot when talking about GC on Wiiu, but it can't even use the original clock speeds of the GC.

Getting Wii games to run without the disc and with gamepad support does not compare to getting GC games working properly in Wii mode.

The homebrew methods are not 100% compatible, look at the source code for nintendont, there are game specific fixes for over a 100 games.

Devolution most certainly does something similar, because F-Zero GX works, but F-Zero GX from a demo disc... doesn't.

Not to say Nintendo couldn't do anything like this, but it's certainly a lot more complicated (i.e. costly) to implement.

Plus, the GBA ambassador method on 3DS can run any GBA game with nothing special (besides the knowledge of what save type the game uses) and Nintendo still didn't sell GBA games on 3DS.

Nintendo works in mysterious (and dumb) ways.

Re: Best Fire Emblem Games Of All Time

AlienX

To me Sacred Stones is the best due to the excellent characters and cool as heck monster designs, the game keeps throwing ya new content all around but doesn't feel as messy as Radiant Dawn.

PoR is great, but yeah, it's always less interesting when there are no monsters.

I haven't played FE after the hyper-anime reboot but seeing that Awakening is top spot I'll have to finally give the game a look.

Re: Video: We Hereby Declare That 2023 Will Be The Year Of 3DS StreetPass

AlienX

I still play 3DS a lot, my DSi screen edges started fading so now I have more reason to play on the 3DS.

I still would like to get the bulky 2DS, if only to have a sturdier version of the console, the clamshell feels like it will snap and the trigger buttons make it so that pocketing the thing could break them, which is mostly the reason I don't do streetpass anymore.

I have fond memories of playing KH:DDD and Smash, but it's the backwards compatibility that really made this system for me. Whether it's DS or 3D Genesis games there is always something to play on the thing.

Re: Best Of 2022: Is It Ever A Good Idea To Start At 'The Beginning' Of Series Like Zelda Or Dragon Quest?

AlienX

No.

I would never recommend the Genesis Sonic games, or the NES Mario and NES Zelda games as starting points.

For Sonic I think the GBA did the best job at portraying the series as a whole: action platforming with charming visuals and neat unlockables.

For Mario, you have to start with Super Mario World, it's not just a Mario game, it's the game.

For Zelda, ALTTP is right up there with being the game so I feel like I have not much to say other than OOT changed things too much so if you want a feel for what Zelda is ALTTP is the best option to start with.

Then, after playing I would suggest trying the originals. Preferably from a collection or something.

I always found Sonic Mega Collection (the GC one, not the dull "Plus" ver.) the best at creating the illusion of a time way past gone and trying desperately to hold on to it somehow. Beautiful presentation.

For Zelda, the Collector's Edition or GBA release.

For Mario, the GBA release, or to keep things interesting the Animal Crossing version which ended up being more vibrant than the VC releases, thanks Nintendo.

Re: Round Up: The Reviews Are In For Sonic Prime

AlienX

I'm on ep 2, I can/can't believe they don't allow switching to the Japanese dub so I've had to watch it in Mandarin. It's the only language that doesn't make my skin crawl with these unfitting voices.

I was starting to like the Latam dub but they keep every single Sonic term in English, and sounds too awkward sometimes.

I strongly feel Shadow should not have been part of the generic Green Hill world Sonic is introduced in.

Leagues better than Boom, but doesn't hope to reach Sonic X's excellent storytelling and care for the characters.

Re: Best Nintendo Switch 3D Platformers

AlienX

As a Sonic fan I hate that Colors is the worst title on this list, there's hardly any 3D gameplay in it and when there is it's the most basic thing you can imagine. Terrible Sonic game.

Overall, the Switch is a bad platform for Sonic it seems. With Mania being the highlight, but I mean even the original 3DS could probably run it and that's saying something.

Re: Soapbox: After 10 Years I Finally Got A Wii U, Here’s What I Thought

AlienX

I didn't get a Wii U back in the day because it was expensive and had too many gaming options (3DS, Wii, PC) to bother adding another layer to what should've stayed a minor hobby.

But if I did have one I think I'd love it, I really like the Wii's design and Wii U feels like its ultimate form.

I got to try Sonic Advance 3 on cemu, and the VC interface is so good, intuitive and nice to look at, it's always something missing from unofficial emulators.

Re: Feature: The Spookiest Levels In Non-Spooky Games

AlienX

The best 3D Sonic games have quite a few so I'll give a shoutout to:

Cryptic Castle from Shadow the Hedgehog.

It's the only part in the game where you see Cream and what is essentially a massive Chao garden.

The expert mode version of the level has a new puzzle gimmick near the end, and I'd say it's one of the harder levels in all Sonic games.

Re: Netflix's Sonic Prime Will Premiere Just In Time For Christmas

AlienX

They should've used Blaze, I don't understand the insistence on making Big happen, most fans still hate him.

The facial expression he has on the poster is also uncanny, very out of character.

I wish they would portray the characters accurately instead of trying to "improve" them like Boom failed to do.

Re: Soapbox: After 10 Years I'm Finally Getting A Wii U, But Where Should I Start?

AlienX

If I were to get a Wii U it would be to:

  • Play Xenoblade X
  • Play DS games
  • Play Wii/GameCube games overclocked
  • Play Wii VC/GC with 16:9 correction

So uh, yeah. I'd probably also want to use it as a video player, but I hear the homebrew side never bothered making a player. So the only way to use the dedicated video decoder is to load up a video stream on the web browser.

Re: Talking Point: Given The Voice Artist Controversy, Will You Be Boycotting Bayonetta 3?

AlienX

I've never played a Bayo game yet, but I wouldn't mind trying it. I wouldn't boycott the game just because one part of the development process screwed up, even if it's one my favorite parts of a game.

I love voice acting, SEGA 100% broke my heart when they axed the 4Kids cast in Colors, but the whole game was a major downgrade from previous titles, I suppose I "boycotted" by buying the DS version instead.

Re: Talking Point: What's The Worst Game That You Still Love For Some Reason?

AlienX

My pride would not allow me to say Sonic 06, which at this point I just think it's a decent action game that is exactly what the fans wanted in 2005.

I just refuse to recognize a bad game if I find it fun to play. Like, that's the point.

Otherwise I could say Ocarina of Time, because the visuals are bad, the frame rate is bad, the pacing is bad, you can't skip cutscenes, and all the other aged stuff in OOT.
