@LuigiBlood When you mentioned full spc700 without replacements, you mean the .pcm file, right?
That always made me curious why they did it like that, because during the Wii era I injected the heck out of the Super Metroid release and played through several big games like Earthbound without encountering any issues.
In fact, I actually think it introduces issues, in the SMW VC I could always hear some noise when entering levels but stopped after I swapped to a clean ROM.
FWIW I can back what you said about portable emulators, when there was a huge leak the GB/NES emulator used for 3DS VC had its source leaked, the code definitely makes it clear you can build it for Windows or 3DS, if you look hard enough there is a Windows build out there but with buggy sound. This emulator seems to be the same one used for the GB games in Kirby's Dream Collection, I can only assume it's also the one used on Wii U for the GB demos in Smash4.
@Coolmusic Wow, I used to read the Archie's and could spot Flynn's writing from a mile away, it's almost uncanny.
I never understood why but he always wanted to drive the point that Omega loves to destroy stuff and talks in a child-like manner, which is never expressed in the games. But in the few lines he has in Dark Beginnings it's made pretty obvious.
Here's something new to complain about! Who the heck writes these? I must assume Flynn, since Sega is incredibly predictable these days.
So, whoever wrote the shorts has no idea who Omega is, or what he's supposed to be like.
"I call dibs!" Omega is an ally of Shadow and Rouge, he is not a bag of jokes and one-liners, this character has only had a meaningful appearance in 3 games, in which his main purpose is to assist Shadow or Rouge. None of those games represent Omega as a dumb joke machine that only enjoys destruction.
See, the problem with this is that by the writer's logic Shadow should also be saying "This is the ultimate power!", or "I'm the coolest!" on every other line, based on the fact that that's what Shadow says in the games, that's how he writes Omega!
Plus, I feel the writer failed to read the room with these shorts, it's supposed to be a serious story this time around. No need to shoehorn jokes or push pathetic 'improvements' to a character's personality. Omega says "I call dibs!" in ep.2 and ep.3, excellent work there.
Preparations for one ShadowtheHedgehog, obviously.
Come on! It will forever bother me all the crappy copy-pasted characters or the people who actually care about characters like... I'd rather not say names but just look at the finished roster and tell me it doesn't look like a mess of lookalikes and unrecognizable franchises.
Surely, Sakurai should have predicted the year of Shadow. FWIW I will complain about Kazuya now, between Guilty Gear, SF, KoF, DoA, VirtuaFighter and Tekken — Tekken would be last on my list in terms of recognizable games, iconic characters, or general importance.
The chao garden is definitely something that helped make the regular gameplay replayable, especially if you wanted to make certain chao.
So, out of all the nonsense Iizuka says, this is actually not a bad thing.
The chao garden would get boring fast. And in the setup of a boost game like Generations it would be pretty mediocre since there's practically no room for exploration, you just go-go-ggggo-go.
Wow, Japan has a lot more Yugioh games from this era that I knew about.
I had The Sacred Cards which I enjoyed but is far from the authentic Yugioh experience.
Something funny I recall is that the EU release's Spanish translation has some really silly card names, I guess those cards hadn't been printed yet, the order of the words is often wrong so it changes the meaning. "Dragon Master Knight" becomes "Master of Soldier Dragon" which makes it sound like it's BEUM the master, instead of Black Luster Soldier.
They also don't translate the "B." that many cards used to avoid the word "black", so Red-Eyes is "B. dragón rojo-ojos" (which sounds as awkward as "Dragon N. Eyes of Red" would.)
Don't really care about fans posting memes. But I've always found the love for the official social media memes to be meh.
I think "self aware" jokes stop being funny after like the 3rd time. And then you get the odd post here and there, but when you see a picture of Blaze the Cat on a grassy field posted on April 20, you know you gotta draw the line somewhere.
I'd like to see some figures though, because I'll never believe posting garbage on your favorite SNS is enough to revitalize a popular franchise. I'd sooner believe that a new generation of -very- young fans appeared after playing the recent games.
Even though I was never a huge fan of SA2's Tails/Eggman mech levels, I still enjoyed playing in them, it was a time where ST could make anything look cool and fun to play in.
I don't think this is 'nostalgia goggles', and now I see it was them trying to please the fans who very much wanted Sonic to have a gun, so this was the best they could do.
As for the treasure hunting levels, if you can't find fun in flying around in a large 3D space, then Sonic Adventure games just aren't for you.
No matter how many times I play these games, I'm always taken aback by how PACKED with content they are.
I actually like reading criticisms for Sonic games, it's cool when your own problems with these games match with others, because it's not all perfect, it doesn't have to be. But when I hear people saying these games are just plain bad, I can't take them seriously.
The stage during the surf gimmick almost tricked me into thinking it was a Secret Rings level.
Disappointing if it's from Forces or Frontiers, as Night Palace would look amazing remade and match Shadow's aesthetics. Actually, most of Secret Rings' levels feel like dark, alien-like, apocalyptic situations.
Sega can't fool me tho, this is just a front for the wisps, and is just another way to make the stages easier to develop. It still looks like all the Shadow stages so far will shift to 2D gameplay, this is to me like the missing piece. Once Sega cracks the code on making a 3D stage with at least two minutes of uninterrupted action again, is when I'll accept what they're selling.
I also find the Advance series to be better games than Mania.
Mania has long-ass levels and over-designed stage gimmicks. It's a fun game, sure, but having to play through the most annoying Sonic levels (Stardust Speedway, Metallic Madness, Lava Reef) is just... why?
Advance games have a lot of variety in the 3 games but they all seem to keep their acts at a decent length and without sacrificing exploration.
Advance 3 gets a lot of flack for the stages, and some of them are just bizarre, but the aesthetics are absolutely sublime and don't tire you out after playing just 1 level.
@Mz3player This is the attitude I wish more people had, I played it for the first time last year through Xenia, and the only thing that truly made me go "why is this like this???" was the ball puzzle.
Everything else was so enjoyable, though. 4Kids obviously seals the deal for me.
So many iconic lines in this thing. I'm definitely the kind of guy that triggers the hint marker just to hear the voices.
If you die like 3 times in the Egg Wyvern boss you get Sonic going: "it looks like Eggman's cockpit is located inside the mouth' line which is gold, yet delivered with such sincerity that is just too good for words.
Oh man, here we go again, I know it's no use to say this since people here are either pro-P-06 or hate 06 in general. But here goes...
I think the people who are truly delusional are the ones that block off this game just for dumb things like Princess Elise, or loading screens, the frustrating ball puzzle, or memes. This game has nowhere near the same rep as it has in Japan for a reason.
It had a budget, impressive visuals (compared to previous games), challenging levels, it is brimming with content and I would much rather side with this game than the low effort Sonic Colors/Lost World/Forces --all these titles that have 1 minute levels, no challenge, levels that are 2.5D, it's ridiculous that people have preferred this junk for more than a decade over what was offered to us back in just 2006.
My take on P-06: I was super disappointed with P-06 because it removes the stuff that I liked about the original — precise platforming, every character accelerates too quickly, especially Silver. In the original the mach speed stages exist for a reason: -going fast- the rest of the game is about destroying enemies, timing your jumps correctly, collecting rings, all under a decent enough time to get an S rank.
People need to invite frustration into their gameplay experience a little bit more. What's the point of paying $60 on a game you can finish in a day without breaking a sweat?
@Ryoth I think he meant Balan, though Yuji Naka had not been involved with Sonic for at least 15 years when Balan released.
Basically, they hired him as lead, kicked him off silently, Naka sued, Square responded by revealing he had sold shares based on info he wasn't supposed to have which is apparently illegal in Japan, so he got arrested. I think he's out now, but his social rep is like at 2%.
@N8tiveT3ch I've certainly made my peace with it, in my headcanon the kiss is symbolic, in the same way the snap is in Thanos's gauntlet, or the eccentric laughter Mozart has in the Amadeus film.
@Samalik I had to be 'that guy' and point out all the 3D games where JP dub was taken out for space. At least the ones I know of.
Sonic Heroes (GC) Shadow the Hedgehog (GC) Sonic Riders (GC) Sonic Unleashed (Wii) All-Stars Racing (didn't release in JPN) Sonic Lost World 3DS (I actually don't remember) -Technically- Brawl. Sonic 2006 and Smash for 3DS requires changing the entire system language to use the JP dub.
Then the 2D ones would be: Sonic Battle Sonic Advance 3 Sonic Rush Sonic Rush Adventure Sonic Colors DS Sonic Generations 3DS Sonic CD in Sonic Gems Collection
Most of these support multi-lang so it's a pretty seamless transition. A few of them have dual-audio mods too.
It's cool to see what seems to be a serious story and not the trash lines from Forces or the constant reminders of random trivia in Frontiers.
But I will say this: the voice choices are still terrible, Stephanie Sheh sounds like a moe moe girl, it's a 180 from Maria's traditional sound — it really shouldn't be hard to find someone that sounds like Rebecca Honig.
It's quite funny, my biggest complaint with the voice cast has always been that they sound too normal, when the 4Kids cast was the complete opposite, but now that Maria sounds like a Funimation dub it's the other way around, she needs a gentle, normal sounding voice.
I knew about this game from the Wii homebrew days, you could get the original game running through a poorly-working replica of the engine.
Even when I got hooked into Ace Attorney and Hotel Dusk, I could not understand the love for this one. One major thing that annoys me is that the entire screen is the text box and doesn't have the same feel as other visual novels.
This was the game I really wanted to play when I still only had SNES and PS1, I was disappointed to find out the PS1 did not play PS2 games after renting it lmao.
Not the worst gamble, some GBC games will play on GB I guess.
A year later I got a GC and completely forgot this game existed, the lego games covered the star wars itch. Would still like to play it tho!
Maybe it's because they were the last I played but the Edgeworth games are a lot better than Apollo Justice/DD/SoJ!
Can't believe they finally considered using the original sprites, though the character portraits on DS were basically just downscaled art and don't really have the same appeal as the ones from the og trilogy. Everything else is pretty much your typical 16-bit graphics which is great.
It's also cool to see the English title and puns for AAI2, farewell Justine Courtney!
The Archie comics era from 2003 to 2016 was my jam, once they rebooted the series and shortly cancelled it to reboot it yet again in IDW I lost faith in the comics.
Because of that I have quite a hard time accepting new characters like Tangle and Whisper.
I dunno, to me they're kinda over-designed, for Sonic characters at least.
The Biolizard fight looks surprisingly accurate, the one on 3DS was a joke, I can't help but still be bothered by how super stiff the controls look, the jerky turns are there to remind you that this is a game about going fast and is tuned to running in a straight line so you don't mess up and blame the game.
And as that Ark level leads me to believe this is indeed still about going in a straight line boosting through insignificant enemies.
I hope Kingdom Valley isn't reduced to that, the original level is one of the most complex 3d Sonic stages out there.
Black Doom sounded great by the way, but Kirk Thornton's voice is still so jarring after all these years. What a waste knowing Jason would gladly do it.
Dumb pr talk, I know most people here just want Switch support but the Sonic series has too many good, interesting games locked away, Generations has always been easily accessible thanks to the PC version.
I imagine many fans would not bother playing this game without access to the many impressive mods the PC version has. To me it's a game from the 'bare minimum' era of Sega. The levels are too simple, too easy, and too short.
If Sega really wanted to celebrate Shadow, they should've either:
A. Make an original game that isn't just a carbon copy of 'boost, win', even if the concept is visiting past stages. A lot of Shadow's past stages were action based not just speed based.
B. Port Shadow 2005.
C. Port Sonic 2006, what many consider Shadow's peak as a character.
Looks cool, I kinda hoped it would be more about going through environments from later seasons and not just MMPR which already has a ton of games based on it.
Always wanted to see a game based on PR in Space or Lost Galaxy.
I recall paying $30 for a used copy of TTYD back in 2010, if I were to play the same exact game that I already experienced but with redrawn HD visuals and half the frame rate, then yeah $60 is a slap in the face.
HD was a big thing back then, now it's the obvious, expected thing to support, it shouldn't drive up the price. (...It also shouldn't hinder performance!)
I know people will disagree with this comparison but still fun to consider:
When Sonic Adventure released on the Dreamcast in 1999 it was priced at $50 (looked it up) I bought the GameCube version which released in 2003, surely for the same or lower price.
Now the problem with this is that the GC version offered 60fps, while pretty much every other texture and most models got remade to fit a different style. That's nuts considering all the other stuff cranked into this version, and it was all for the same price as the simpler DC original.
I'm willing to bet that 90% of the people who played TTYD on the GC don't really care about the HD aspect and just want to have access to the game again. HD/QoL/new content should be an incentive to buy the game again not increase the flippin' price.
Never seen box arts that are so different yet both so good.
I think I instinctively went with the fairy, as that's the one I recognize, but who am I kidding it was probably because the striking pose is pleasing to my eyes.
The European art feels more telling that it's an RPG, though!
I'm more interested in seeing 358/2 Days playable in a modern setup than to keep the main story going, KHIII broke a lot of "rules" and I just wasn't feeling it.
While CoM and ReCoded felt like retreads, 358/2 Days had a lot more unique content to stand on its own.
@smoreon I'm not familiar with xbox but I like comparing it to the 'data install' option of some PSP games. (Kingdom Hearts)
I don't know if there's documentation on it, but if you've used Brawl mods before you might recognize the files.
Basically, every character that shifts to another character during gameplay has their animation file (IIRC) cached and there's also some main menu stuff.
If you use Dolphin, you can look at the tmp folder in realtime. Whenever you launch software this folder gets cleared so loading masterpieces and then going back to Brawl's menu means it has to cache the files again.
When they're written to the tmp folder they use random names, but they have normal names on the disc itself, so if you can identify each file and blank them, Brawl will prioritize (again IIRC) if you use the 'file patch code', the files from the SD card, so you can get the same effect but without the slow loading start.
I think Project M or some of its continuation attempts do this, or just hack the game to load the files like normal since most people will run it from SD or USB.
Other games that use the system memory to cache big files are Final Fantasy CC Echoes of Time and PokePark.
FF copies the entire sfx and music archives which is like 27 MB and also a resource file that's 12.8 MB, in total it's 39.7 MB. It takes about 30 seconds to get through the loading there. It's worth noting that the caching starts before the strap screen unlike Brawl, so longplays on youtube tend to skip it.
@NintendomPower Yeah, Brawl's loading is insane compared to Melee, and is kinda disappointing when you find out years later it's because it's copying 40 MB of temp files to the system memory without making the user aware of it.
Whatever effort one made to avoid using the sd card menu is wasted knowing you still ran Brawl like 500 times beforehand.
I'd like to say surround was kinda useless because I never had the setup for it.
But the wait time isn't a big deal, when I was a kid I always got chills seeing the Sonic Heroes startup: "Presented by Sega", "Created by Sonic Team" -start theme song- "Sofdec ADX logos", "Dolby Surround logo" and then a fade in to the title screen with the song vocals coming in.
To me it always gave it a cinematic feel, and you can't skip any of it, nor do you want to.
The 3 SD cards hosting possibly the entirety of the JP Wii Shop Channel feels unreal, I guess I now know the Wii can handle it.
Sakurai's Wii U's internal memory must be super flooded, though I guess if you multiply 692 titles by the 3 files used for save files + 1 ticket + 1 metadata per title it's still just around 3.4k files which isn't too impressive.
PC Engine CD savefiles take up a lot of blocks so I wonder how much space would he have left if all games had savefiles created.
Some WiiWare like to waste a lot of space like MDK2 and DLC stuff like FFIV The After Years.
Doesn't look like Sonic Adventure to me, looks more like the nonstop speedy gameplay sega has been pumping out since 2008 (I suppose 2007 if you count Secret Rings.)
Interlaced shows from the old days played at 60 fps on CRTs and deinterlaced to 60 fps on modern TVs, yet every streaming service I know of will carry streams deinterlaced to 30 fps, never seen people complain about that except for a rather small group.
I think Knuckles could carry his own show, it's just that this isn't that Knuckles, y'know?
If you ask me, one of the most memorable episodes from Sonic X is the one where it's just Knuckles teaming up with Sammo Hung, searching for a chaos emerald.
I'll still check it out, but meh, I hope they know how to make Shadow work because with Maria, that movie should write itself, but we'll see.

Re: Poll: What's The Best Power Rangers Game? Rate Your Favourites For Our Upcoming Ranking
It's been quite a while since I've played a PR game, but I do think there are some decent titles out there.
In particular:
MMPR isn't just a repetitive beat-em-up, it has some challenging platforming too, but isn't frustratingly difficult either.
SPD is similar to MMPR but each ranger has a gimmick needed to finish the stage.
LR is basically the SNES MMPR game in 3D, but with voice acting from the cast, and glorious PlayStation music that is pure bliss.

Not a lot of companies doing DS games. Sega is still stuck on Genesis and GameGear.

Re: Spark The Electric Jester 3 Is A High-Speed Indie Platformer Dashing To Switch This Month
I'm convinced people forgot what Sonic Adventure and SA2 were like.
They were action games where you could go fast but didn't need to. You had great control of your character, it wasn't just about going forward!
This game on the other hand, clearly is about blasting through everything and even has boost. Awful comparison.
This looks closer to Sonic Forces.

KH1 (still playing it)
I think 358/2 Days gives you a good intro to the series, it leaves you wanting more and jumping to the others certainly feels like an improvement.

Basically, they hired him as lead, kicked him off silently, Naka sued, Square responded by revealing he had sold shares based on info he wasn't supposed to have which is apparently illegal in Japan, so he got arrested. I think he's out now, but his social rep is like at 2%.
Re: Sonic Team Boss Really Wants To Make A New Sonic The Hedgehog RPG
@N8tiveT3ch I've certainly made my peace with it, in my headcanon the kiss is symbolic, in the same way the snap is in Thanos's gauntlet, or the eccentric laughter Mozart has in the Amadeus film.
Re: Here's Your First Look At Sonic X Shadow Generations: Dark Beginnings
@Samalik I had to be 'that guy' and point out all the 3D games where JP dub was taken out for space. At least the ones I know of.
Sonic Heroes (GC)
Shadow the Hedgehog (GC)
Sonic Riders (GC)
Sonic Unleashed (Wii)
All-Stars Racing (didn't release in JPN)
Sonic Lost World 3DS (I actually don't remember)
-Technically- Brawl.
Sonic 2006 and Smash for 3DS requires changing the entire system language to use the JP dub.
Then the 2D ones would be:
Sonic Battle
Sonic Advance 3
Sonic Rush
Sonic Rush Adventure
Sonic Colors DS
Sonic Generations 3DS
Sonic CD in Sonic Gems Collection
Most of these support multi-lang so it's a pretty seamless transition. A few of them have dual-audio mods too.
Re: Here's Your First Look At Sonic X Shadow Generations: Dark Beginnings
Re: Random: Finished With Your Old GameCube? Why Not Turn It Into A Cereal Bowl?
The ol GameCube's a champ, even if the disc drive stops there's the flippydrive ode to look forward to... one of these days.
Re: Sonic X Shadow Generations Website May Be Teasing A Fourth Playable Character
The 2d gameplay in Generations is what everyone loves about the game.
I mean, it's why half the time the 3d gameplay switches to 2d. /z
Re: Review: Tsukihime -A Piece Of Blue Glass Moon- (Switch) - A Delightfully Dark Revival For A VN Classic
Re: Aspyr Is Bringing Another Classic Star Wars Game To Switch This August
This was the game I really wanted to play when I still only had SNES and PS1, I was disappointed to find out the PS1 did not play PS2 games after renting it lmao.
Not the worst gamble, some GBC games will play on GB I guess.
A year later I got a GC and completely forgot this game existed, the lego games covered the star wars itch. Would still like to play it tho!
Re: Nintendo Switch Online Gets Four New Additions Today, Including Zelda, Metroid, And Perfect Dark
ALTTP has a DARK, NORMAL, and BRIGHT option, the "dark" option represents the original colors of the SNES original.
...But it's pointless now because of the terrible color correction filter that makes everything look washed out!
There ya go that's my criticism. Four Swords online is OK but the DSiWare version will always work since it's offline and has more content.
Props to anyone who has the patience to reach the Palace of the Four Sword in this version.
Re: Ace Attorney Investigations Collection Completes Series In The West This September
Re: Sonic Team Open To More Characters From Comic Series Appearing In Games
The Archie comics era from 2003 to 2016 was my jam, once they rebooted the series and shortly cancelled it to reboot it yet again in IDW I lost faith in the comics.
Because of that I have quite a hard time accepting new characters like Tangle and Whisper.
I dunno, to me they're kinda over-designed, for Sonic characters at least.
Re: Hands On: Sonic X Shadow Generations Is A Love Letter To Sonic Adventure 2
Re: Sonic Team On Remasters: "If There's A Title People Like, We'll Think About It"
Dumb pr talk, I know most people here just want Switch support but the Sonic series has too many good, interesting games locked away, Generations has always been easily accessible thanks to the PC version.
Re: Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Return In All-New Retro-Style Action Game
Looks cool, I kinda hoped it would be more about going through environments from later seasons and not just MMPR which already has a ton of games based on it.
Always wanted to see a game based on PR in Space or Lost Galaxy.
Re: Poll: Is $60 Too Much For Nintendo's Switch Re-Releases?
Re: Poll: Box Art Brawl - Duel: Bravely Default
Never seen box arts that are so different yet both so good.
I think I instinctively went with the fairy, as that's the one I recognize, but who am I kidding it was probably because the striking pose is pleasing to my eyes.
The European art feels more telling that it's an RPG, though!
Re: Rumour: Reliable Insider Says Kingdom Hearts 4 'Might' Come To Switch 2
I'm more interested in seeing 358/2 Days playable in a modern setup than to keep the main story going, KHIII broke a lot of "rules" and I just wasn't feeling it.
While CoM and ReCoded felt like retreads, 358/2 Days had a lot more unique content to stand on its own.
Re: Random: Sakurai Cut Dolby Surround From Kirby Game To Trim Player Wait Time
@smoreon I'm not familiar with xbox but I like comparing it to the 'data install' option of some PSP games.
Re: Random: Sakurai Cut Dolby Surround From Kirby Game To Trim Player Wait Time
@NintendomPower Yeah, Brawl's loading is insane compared to Melee, and is kinda disappointing when you find out years later it's because it's copying 40 MB of temp files to the system memory without making the user aware of it.
Whatever effort one made to avoid using the sd card menu is wasted knowing you still ran Brawl like 500 times beforehand.
Re: Random: Sakurai Cut Dolby Surround From Kirby Game To Trim Player Wait Time
I'd like to say surround was kinda useless because I never had the setup for it.
Re: Random: Sakurai's Game Storage Solutions Are A Sight To Behold
Re: Sonic Adventure-Like 3D Action Platformer 'Spark The Electric Jester 3' Coming To Switch
Doesn't look like Sonic Adventure to me, looks more like the nonstop speedy gameplay sega has been pumping out since 2008 (I suppose 2007 if you count Secret Rings.)
Is it really that easy to mistake them?
Re: Knuckles Sets "Record-Breaking" Viewership Performance For Paramount+
No way am I gonna shell out $6 a month for a halfbaked service that has ads.
Re: Poll: Are You Bothered By The Frame Rate For Paper Mario: TTYD On Switch?
I'm not surprised casuals would be OK with 30fps.
Interlaced shows from the old days played at 60 fps on CRTs and deinterlaced to 60 fps on modern TVs, yet every streaming service I know of will carry streams deinterlaced to 30 fps, never seen people complain about that except for a rather small group.
Re: Round Up: The Reviews Are In For The Knuckles Paramount+ TV Show
I think Knuckles could carry his own show, it's just that this isn't that Knuckles, y'know?
If you ask me, one of the most memorable episodes from Sonic X is the one where it's just Knuckles teaming up with Sammo Hung, searching for a chaos emerald.
I'll still check it out, but meh, I hope they know how to make Shadow work because with Maria, that movie should write itself, but we'll see.
Re: Bayonetta Origins Director Empathises With Paper Mario Dev, Suggests Reasons For 30FPS
I've never been a huge fan of Paper Mario but I did play this back in the day.
Over the years I think the 30/60 difference is manageable, but it always extra stings when the original was 60 fps.
I also don't like when devs go with 30fps just because of slight dips at 60fps.
The Sonic storybook series comes to mind.
