Not the greatest example but before I got a DSi in '11 to replace my broken lite, I got hooked on Ace Attorney on Wii and after finishing them I wanted to play Apollo Justice, so I did it... on an emulator on a very old PC, the game never ran at full speed and the audio crackled, yet I don't remember all the bad stuff, just the game itself. Still there were several times I wanted to stop playing because of the issues.
I typically don't care about performance issues. There are certain games though where I simply don't stand it.
Sonic Generations on the 3DS had no excuse for being a 30fps game, if the hardware was too limiting they should've designed it differently, the level design is already very simplistic.
By comparison Sonic Rush on the DS is 60fps but certain levels, when boosting, bring the rate down a bit, this slight slowdown is enjoyable IMO, you can appreciate better what's up on the screen.
This one will sound weird, but in Sonic 06, which is usually 60fps, will slowdown when there's a lot of action on screen, this is great as I mentioned before, the enemies and items in this game are more detailed, when you destroy a robot or box it's cool to see the pieces fly around in an epic slowdown. As a kid in 2006 this always appealed to me, and it was just an unintended design.
An even weirder example is Sonic Classic Collection, if you play it on a DS the games are very laggy, the fps is halved most of the time, and there is added slowdown. Surprisingly, it's quite playable. Beside ruining some sprite flicker effects, I had no issues playing, as well as enjoying the games.
I don't mind playing OOT or MM at 20fps, but absolutely need 60fps in games like Mario, Sonic or Smash Bros.
If Nintendo released a DSi-style console with a GBA slot I would be all over that. With the option of downloadable games. Downloadable games can be "enhanced" by overclocking to the DSi speed. While GBA dl games come with a personalized border and manual scans.
It always felt "wrong" to play DS on 3DS because of the smoothing and lack of motion blur that my AGS-101 and DSi have.
It was probably for the best, better hardware/hd output would have meant bigger workload for making games, we probably wouldn't have as many games released.
Using the same knowledge from the GC meant easier obstacles to overcome. A good example of this is Sonic 06, if it had been designed for Wii the tighter limitations would have allowed them to finish the game a lot sooner.
SonicRiders is the best racing game I've ever played, it's extremely satisfying once you understand most of the rules. And the character selection is quite generous.
ZatchBellMamodo Fury is an interesting hybrid action/fighting game where you exchange blows from far away. It's not incredibly deep but gets quite challenging to A rank all stages. And once again unlocking the characters is pretty fun (20 playable characters)
Despite my love for GC I don't really have a lot of games I could call overlooked. So might as well: ShadowtheHedgehog gameplay-wise a stepdown from the highly technical gameplay from the previous game, it still manages to be fun, as most levels are plenty filled with 3D action and platforming and performs great on GameCube. It's pretty brutal if you go for all A ranks and endings. But you're awarded with an Expert Mode that is basically a linear, perfected version of the game.
The developer's name reflects the quality of the game.
Not to offend, I'm sure this must've taken time to make, but damn, if I'm gonna pour hours into making a game I'll be sure not to make it look like a bad rip off of NES Mario games.
Time to shift into my alter ego; Nitro Twelve Citrus. (Original name do not steal.)
GameCube was my reintroduction into games, it made me appreciate more genres.
Everyone I knew in middle school back then had a GC — Melee, Sunshine, Wind Waker, Sonic Heroes, Metroid Prime were some of the titles I would often hear people talking about.
Emerald there is nostalgia involved here, but I feel it has an upperhand due to the amount of connectivity with GameCube/Wii, and having access to basically the best Poké designs.
@johnvboy You mean Wii U? Wii VC had a total of 4 games with the dark filter, but the 3D graphics had no filter/blur, because it's a perfect 2x scale. SM64/MK64/WaveRave/CrusinUSA
Wii U has the dark filter on all titles, and they're also all super blurry.
Unless they complained because "it's Wii" and most users played with composite cables on HDTVs, which should still look considerably better than a real N64.
Brawl is without a doubt the best design, sure it's by far the least realistic, boob pockets and all but her face and hair style look really great. There's something about the size of her chest that really speaks volumes about the character y'know? It's the intended design, otherwise they wouldn't have done it like that
I didn't like what they did in Smash4, giving her those clunky heels. Ruined the design.
@IronMan30 Don't dwell on it anymore, four years later it became disgustingly easy to download anything from the eShop directly to the 3DS via CIAngel (now defunct) anyone who really wants can get them today using other methods. People even inserted their own games, few years later someone came along and even figured out how to remove the dark image and motion blur settings.
Pokémon Puzzle League is the only one that suggests it's a custom emulator on Wii because of the way it does fmv.
But even then it's clearly based off the same software. Wii U is not much different, I'm sure if you dump SM64 into OoT it would show numerous errors, the Wii U having more memory means it can maintain profiles for the games it runs, across releases.
The reason I believe this is so, is because on Wii VC if you insert the SM64 ROM on a game without the darker colors SM64 still ends up with those darker colors anyway, so there's obviously some per-game settings remaining across releases.
The Wii had tighter memory limitations, you can tell with 32 MB games adding a loading screen to closing the HOME Menu. So these profiles are presumably removed; giving the appearance of a 'specialized' emulator for each game.
Barok van who? I'm a bit lost with some of these characters but wow, I'm surprised by some of these, I always thought Von Karma was at least as popular as Godot. And that Trucy doesn't come close to Maya or even Kay.
But on the other hand I'm glad to not see Blackquill here kind of a lame, generic character. Honestly Gavin is the same, his theme music is just nostalgic at this point.
Sounds to me like the Wii VC is the best of both worlds, least input lag of them all, only has the dark colors on a few of the games (4 out of 21), minus the pause screen crackle in oot it sounds all-around correct.
Not having the suspend point for Majora's Mask sucks, though you could argue it's better this way anyway.
Nintendo must have some double standard then because the grunts from Peach/Daisy/Rosalina from Mario Kart and Smash Bros can be pretty diverse, down to the "blasting off" echo scream from Smash Bros.
I've definitely seen at least one video where the sounds are compiled together to make this joke. A.K.A. Snake's Harem by MALR https://youtu.be/-jkuXO-e2cI&t=2m26s
I do not cry at video games please understand. But do not watch the scenes from the 1.5 remix, play the game, suffer through the missions as if you were Roxas yerself, and only then you can properly experience the ending in all its glory.
It costs $210 to buy all 21 N64 games that were made available on Wii VC.
Realistically, no one would play all those 21 games, and would probably play no more than half of that amount.
So buying the games is more bang for your buck if you ask me, I still have Majora's Mask after all these years, and still play Smash 64 from time to time. That would be (both released in 2009) ~$1,170 to this year in the yearly NSO price model.
So, yes, this is a rip off and not worth it, even if you just want it for "quick, new experiences" eventually you'll have to quit it, or it will drain your money for just a couple of N64 games.
There are simply better things to do with money, like investing in physical media for instance.
It's always interesting when Nintendo has to write down instructions to avoid bugs in their stuff, this one's my favorite: https://www.nintendo.com/consumer/memorycard1019.jsp because it's really all on Nintendo for providing specs that would not be honored in the future.
Definitive on Switch, sure. I much prefer the look of the n64 original cleaned up by Wii's superior hardware. For a portable experience I look no further than the excellent DS remake.
Though I think PW's depiction in AJ made things far more interesting, the overall game didn't feel as good as the original trilogy and I think the characters are to blame, everyone is sort of an ass in this game. But I will admit seeing Ema in what was basically Gumshoe's role was really hype.
AAI:Miles Edgeworth ended up being infinitely better. And I feel this bears true for the characters too, Trucy in DD is basically an overrun joke, while Kay became a lot more likeable in the sequel.
Having played the GBA Fire Emblem games, I immediately went to buy this because it had IntelligentSystems in the boxart. Unfortunately, the game never grabbed me and it's my least played GC game to this day.
Should've gotten Path of Radiance back then, much regret.
Hi, I'm not a dev, nor youtuber, but I can tell you with my knowledge of not being a dev that anything will run on anything if you sacrifice enough stuff.
1.5/2.5 will not run on Switch at full resolution and frame rate, they are not simple PS2 games. SE has even said they were built from "scratch" due to missing sources. Anyone can deduce from this that if they want to make these games available on Nintendo, they have to start hackin' 'n slashin' away at the game, reducing assets, rewriting existing code, etc. This is a time consuming process and time as we all know = money.
Do you feel enriched by my knowledge that I've generously shared with you?
It's worth noting that despite being in Japanese, the Wii VC version featured minor changes to the game. The electronic manual included was basically a guide for the Japanese dialogue, unless I'm mistaking this bit for the Star Parodier release.
Reminds me of an old Wii ad, that featured a girl playing Another Code: R, and I always thought, they got it wrong, that game wouldn't appeal at all to teenage girls.
I get similar vibes from this, it's more Nintendo pushing for older women to play these types of games but I don't think it'll make a significant difference.
I remember the hype with Other M, that cinematic commercial is a masterpiece.
I think Smash Ultimate really bears the title beautifully. If Nintendo comes out with another Smash it probably won't reach the same amount of hype but who knows?
Even Ultimate wasn't perfect, I think not having trophies/model viewer was a huge stepdown, the overload of music is also probably unnecessary. I would've put more focus on legacy Smash features, and eliminate the "echo" fighters, which gives the game an overcrowded, cheap feel.
The possibility of a simpler story mode based on popular characters would've gone quite a long way.
Even though I won't be buying Ultimate, since I have the superior DS version with the extra boss & friends and better level design, it's nice knowing Sonic still sells better on Nintendo.
Wasn't Unleashed like this? The lousy PS2 port the Wii was graced with ended up outselling the HD version.

I will gladly say Super Mario World is worlds above all the Genesis games combined. But Mario 64? Nah. And Sunshine has some bs that trumps even Sonic 06.

It won't matter, in a few years the Super Ultra Cube will release and NSO will stop supporting new games and eventually blip out of existence.
Re: Poll: What's The Worst Legend Of Zelda Game?
Ouch, Phantom Hourglass is at least a Zelda game, Zelda II and Triforce Heroes are just noise.
I suppose no one voted for FS because no one actually had access to two cartridges and GBAs and the link cable to play the blasted game.

Oh hey Green Hill Zone, it's been a long time since SEGA referenced that, they should do that more often.

My favorite GC game is Interactive Multi-Game Demo Disc Version 18. That's the one that comes with a full ROM of Mario Pinball Land for GBA.
