Nintendo had a surprising new Fire Emblem title to announce today, and it's coming rather soon on 3DS. Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia is due on 19th May in both North America and Europe; it draws inspiration from Fire Emblem Gaiden, a Famicom title that originally only saw release in Japan.
The core plot revolves around Alm and Celica, two warriors on opposing sides of a battle between North and South kingdoms on the continent of Valentia. The key hook that the game is taking from Gaiden is the sense of free-roaming, flexible character progression and the presence of dungeons. A reimagining, it should provide a fairly distinct experience from the formula seen in Fire Emblem: Awakening and Fire Emblem Fates.
In addition to the core game, two new amiibo will be released for the lead characters.
Are you excited about a new release in the series on 3DS? Let us know in the comments.

Fire Emblem Echoes looks cool I might just buy it.
Fire Emblem Heroes looks okay, I'm not that into mobile games but at least it looks like a Fire Emblem game.
They could have showed something about that FE Switch game...
Fire Emblem Warriors...Nahh, just Nahh.
Glad to see both 3DS support and classic FE support. I'll be getting the game and Amiibo. Awesome.
Way too hyped.
This was honestly the best news for me. Totally did not expect a new game still for 3DS, but man, am I glad this happened.
If they manage to release the game properly this time, I'm getting it Day One.
Did not expect this! Super excited!!!
This is actually a genuinely amazing move on Nintendo's part. To remaster and localise what is arguably the black sheep of the entire Fire Emblem franchise just shows how much faith they have in the series, and how much they'll be supporting it. I can't wait!!!
2 new amiibo but still no Corrin.
3DS is Dead they said.
Switch will replace 3DS they said.
LOL!
Yes! I'm so excited. I'm really, really glad it's on 3DS too. Love the thing.
Nintendo is making Fire Emblem great again.
I've been wantng this for a long time! I totally called it too!
I need those amiibos, plus Corrin.
It's weird they would choose the one game that everyone hates to remake...
But I'm SO HAPPY they finally got a new artist, I really didn't like Kozaku's art style.
Day 1.
Awesome, I'll be picking this up. I might even pick up one of those Amiibos, maybe.
@Decapre But they even stated that the Switch isn't ousting 3DS.
that's... AWESOME!! the 3DS LIVES ON! I'll be getting all these games honestly 😂
Color me hyped. I did not expect this to be honest, and I'll for looking back at the classic games over the direction they are taking the series now.
Perhaps in time we can hope for re-releases (at the very least) for some of the other titles. I'm looking at you, FE6.
@Expa0 It's an extremely ambitious game though, I think it'll be excellent.
Yes on the game and yes on the amiibo twin pack!
I better get cracking and play through Awakening and Fates.
Problem is I've already started Awakening twice and once again I can barely remember the story. Will I have to restart yet again?!
omg yessss ... i just love everything about fire emblem !!! TBH i thought nintendo will stop supporting 3DS after switch realize since both are handheld !! but yes yes yes HYPE
@Decapre 3DS will replace the Switch
On a more serious note, super excited for this and gives hope for other Japan exclusive FE games to be localized via remakes.
The 3DS gets 3 main series titles AND a spin-off while the Wii U is completely skipped over...
If they adapt the title for current times just right, this might be the best Fire Emblem game since New Mystery (or Radiant Dawn, if you prefer that). If not the best, certainly the most innovative.
The series was growing a bit stale for me recently, so I'll definitely give this a try.
Great way to get another game out there by reusing an engine and maps, characters and plot. Very smart decision!
With how much they're pushing the series, surely the Radiant games HAVE to be in line for some kind of re-release? It's a huge shame new fans pretty much have no way to play these.
So, this will be one single game right? I won't have to buy three versions to get the full story like I did with Fates?
Either way, awesome news.
But damn, I gotta decide between Dragon Quest VIII, this game, and Breath of the Wild on the Wii U now....
I thought they said digital only on the direct
See anti-modern FE people? Nintendo loves you too. (grabs shield)
Joking aside, I want this very badly. Every time I say I will cut back on video games Nintendo pulls me back in.
This was the best part of the direct, a really nice surprise for me. I'm probably not going to be buying the Switch until 2019 (unless something convinces me that I want it in 18) so seeing another 3DS game made my day. It also looks to have a bunch of new gameplay elements outside of the standard tactical gameplay and it looks pretty interesting.
this is the kind of Fire Emblem game I didn't know I wanted.
I'm in.
I like the idea of free roaming and dungeon crawling.
Hopefully people will buy it and open the path for more great fe games
I wonder what those amiibo will be used for.
I'm not too keen on Fire Emblem, but I like exploring dungeons. So this game may be fun for me, I dunno
I'm excited for EVERYTHIING!! .... Except Microtransactions in the mobile game.... But oh well.
@rjejr Yeah, I'm not understanding that. Surely this Direct was the time!
Gyaaah day 1! Actually impressed they are not dumping the 3ds! But I think this bodes not too well for the Switch in Japan...feels like SEGA trying to make the 32X and the Saturn coexist.
Dang! What a pleasant surprise!
3DS is still very much alive. This made my day much better. Great use of their IP.
I understand the people saying Nintendo needs to kill the 3DS for the Switch to be successful, but I am SO glad that doesn't seem to be the case. Keep the 3DS games coming!
This will work on the older model 3DS systems, right?
The Direct was nice but where's my Corrin Amiibo?
@ThomasBW84 The UK Direct shows that the game is available both digital and physical whereas the NA Direct seems to be digital only.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5I6jqMTW0WY
Look around 5:47.
@Grumblevolcano I'd really be up for that.
I'm just glad they didn't split the Game into multiple Parts like last time.
So far it looks really interesting.
More 3DS games w00t
Ahhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!
New Fire Emblem for Switch? Check.
New Fire Emblem for 3DS? Check.
New Fire Emblem crossover for Switch and 3DS? Check.
New Fire Emblem for mobile? Check.
New Fire Emblem amiibo? Check.
This is what I'm talking about. This. Is what. I'm talkin. ABOUT!!!
Gosh dang this FE: Echoes looks good. So so so so good! I've played Gaiden on NES. Not all of it, but some. This is hype beyond belief!
YESSSS. MOAR!
This was the best part of the direct by far for me. Good to know my 3ds won't be put out to pasture yet.
@Torakaka It being mysteriously absent while the Gaiden duo got amiibo announcements basically confirms we'll be seeing Smash on the Switch.
Nintendo: So we heard you liked Fire Emblem. So have some Fire Emblem while you Switch to some more Fire Emblem.
Hey guys, they said Fire Emblem Warriors was in development for New Nintendo 3DS systems
Another exclusive.
I was expecting talk of maybe one or two games, but this was a great direct. Sadly I will likely be buying them all. I'm sorry wallet.
@Ryu_Niiyama You joke, but that's exactly what I thought when I saw the announcement. I'm very pleased with it, it's an all-new game for me.
It's amazing how Awakening and Fates took FE from practically being a dead franchise to one of Nintendo's biggest franchises.
I'm looking forward to playing a more traditional FE game. Let's hope this sells well.
@JaxonH Hope the 3DS version flops
All this Fire Emblem makes me wonder if Nintendo has always been really high on this series and was just waiting for a breakthrough to happen (Awakening) before going all in. It's pretty much getting top tier IP treatment now.
Still rocking a 3DS and not Switching over soon? No problem, here's a Fire Emblem!
Making the Switch? Here's a Fire Emblem crossover (and hey, you N3DS can have it too)! Btw, new game incoming!
Got a smartphone like billions of other earthlings? Have a Fire Emblem too!
This is absolutely pathetic and embarrassing. There is no excuse for making more 3DS games. You can't expect the Switch to sell if you insist on supporting your old system instead.
@PotatoTheG Not necessarily, just because Smash has not been announced for the Switch does not mean that it will be.
@hieveryone
Why? I would never wish failure on a game especially if it's a good game. It's clear that the original 3DS just doesn't have the power (Hyrule Warriors struggled so badly). I mean I'll be getting the Switch version (yay! No longer need to buy the 3DS version for portable play also!) but for those who don't own a Switch it's better to get the game on New 3DS the not get it at all
@MarcelRguez Just trying not to get shot. I feel like if I say something that expresses enjoyment of the current FE direction (I just love the whole series), I will have a few users in particular turn up at my door with baseball bats.
@JaxonH Then where's the Corrin Amiibo?
@LeRaposa But they are making a Fire Emblem Warriors and a new console title for Switch as well. I, for one, am super excited for this AND getting a Switch.
@Ryu_Niiyama I also love the whole series, I've played every game and replayed several of them. It's okay to love each and every one.
@xPH03N1Xx86 That may be so but supporting the 3DS after the Switch has launched is stupid.
@Torakaka
Haven't the slightest idea. Actually I do have a hunch. I think Smash Bros Ultimate Edition is coming to Switch (retailer listings leaked it) and I think when they announce it that's when they're going to announce the amiibo to help hype the game.
@LeRaposa
It's not like 3DS is going to last another six years. It's only got another year or so of life left in it. May as well get what they can from it while it's still around. Plus Switch offers console games with console graphics. That practically sells itself to a lot of people. But once 3DS finally does wrap up I'm sure it will help boost the Switch I'm not arguing that. I just don't think prematurely killing it when it doesn't have much life left in it is the answer.
Wow. So much Fire Emblem. @_@
@Ryu_Niiyama No worries, I get it. I'm sure they won't go full classic on it, I'm expecting some aspects of Awakening/Fates to make it into the game as well.
@Torakaka Still weird Corrin was absent.
As someone who has only played and beaten one FE game (The Sacred Stones) I'm definitely excited about all the new FE games coming out! That Direct was pretty awesome!!
@Grumblevolcano Don't sweat it, that's just NoA being silly. It's physical retail in North America too - https://twitter.com/NintendoAmerica/status/821841059613315072
Box art and everything
@PotatoTheG Agreed. Whelp, I'm preordering it this weekend, I love dungeon crawlers.
That logo is appalling. But I'm excited for the game, just need to go and finish Revelations quickly now!
It's a good thing I loves me some Fire Emblem! So glad to see Nintendo giving this IP the support it deserves. To think it could of all been over for the series had Awakenings not sold well...
Great direct overall, even the mobile game looks good!
I'm sure Nintendo will keep the 3DS alive for another year while establishing the Switch as a home console (you can take with you). And then BOOM: Fire Emblem, Pokemon, Bravely 3, Animal Crossing all exclusively for the Switch.
I thought 2017 was going to be an "ok" year for 3ds as it wound down, but I'm really excited for another great year.
@Expa0 I think it makes more sense to remake things that didn't do as well as they could have rather than things people already enjoy.
What a day for Fire Emblem fans! The mobile game (if you are interested) launches in a few weeks, there is a no instalment in the series on 3DS this spring (helps the 3DS lineup a lot), a Warriors game coming in the fall for Switch and N3DS and a mainline series game for Switch in 2018.
I just got into the series with Awakening and I'm quickly becoming a big fan. I probably wont get the mobile game but the other 3 games I will buy day 1.
I really wanted to see a Switch release this year... but I cannot complain with waiting until 2018 if we get another 3DS entry so soon!
@Sinton I had a similar conversation with a friend about this. The first year of the Switch will be about creating a user base and using a combination of original content and ports to flush out the lineup of games. However, once the calendar turns 2018, I fully expect Switch to be the main focus for Nintendo and their publishers. You'll see a lot of big franchises launch then or be announced then.
This is truly awesome
@ThomasBW84 Praise be to Duma and Mila! I thought I might not buy it if it was digital only.
Nintendo sure is giving this series a lot of attention. I never played any strategy game, but maybe I should try them out. I'd be a shame if I at least didn't figure out if the series is for me or not, especially with so many games on the horizon.
slams desk
DAY ONE PURCHASE
Those amiibo are really cool too, so I'll try to get them as well.
My wallet is gonna die this year.
Sad to notice a small print from the EU presentation during the part showing a cutscene, saying the game is going to feature only English voiceovers.
Why are they so against including the original Japanese voiceovers now?
@rjejr
I knew I'd see your mug on here fussing about Corrin amiibo lol...
You don't own a 3DS and don't collect amiibo... Did you even play the game? 😀
I'm guessing that Smash Ultimate we saw in that retailer listing... I'm thinking Corrin and Bayonetta will be announced to help hype it up. After all, they did confirm the amiibo were coming. It's the only explanation. If they don't announce Smash before March 3rd, it'll definitely be shown at e3
Dude, btw, Fire Emblem in 4 months!!! Fire Emblem for Switch!!!
God those Amiibo look magnificent. It's like a lovesong to the NES/Famicom.
Wow those Amiibo... I might hold off, but if we get any future games that make good use of them - I might pick them up. I have too many Amiibo as is right now so I'll hold off if I can.
I will pick it up for sure!!
@bezerker99 Sacred Stones is still my favorite. Good Choice.
@LeRaposa If anything this will entice first time players to buy the Switch exclusive when it comes out.
Ok, I'm interested. Wasn't expecting a re-imagining of an older title, but assuming it is a success, they chose a somewhat fitting name, since they can give other titles the same treatment and release them each as Echoes, with a unique subtitle.
I'm also grateful this is not Digital Only, don't want to upgrade my mircoSD card just yet. Would of thought 32GB would be enough for my 3DS, but I may have to buy a 64GB due to my running out of space...
This should also give me something to do when I'm not playing BOTW or Bomberman on Switch.
very excited about this entry! Hopefully i like it more than i liked fates.
Welp, I'm now won't be getting fates. Just too much trouble with the infamous translation and three games into one thing ain't my style. Echoes! Come to me!
@MS7000
Is there any news on Bomberman switch?? I adore that series.
@Captain_Toad
lol! Yeah, fates wasn't my favorite.
FREE ROAMING u say? This may be the first FE game I actually buy and play.
@Captain_Gonru Prease understand.
FINALLY! This game needed a remake very badly. I'm looking forward to it! Now... ahem... Can we get a Genealogy of the Holy War and Thracia 776 remake?
@Expa0
Seriously? I greatly enjoy his art style. I mean, I've only played Awakening and an not familiar with any work outside of FE, but I like what I've seen!
@LArachelDisciple Sacred Stones takes a lot of inspiration from Gaiden, I think you'll like this remake.
Day one for me. As much as I liked Awakening, I missed having an established main character so it doesn't turn a relationship sim.
I have a doubt though, was Gaiden one of the extremely difficult FE or I'm mixing that up with the Jugdral series?
@Luna_110 Jugdral was the difficult continent, especially Thracia 776. Gaiden allowed grinding, so it could either be moderately difficult or stupidly easy.
@Expa0 I still like the SNES era character designs the best, but yeah, these ones are better than those in Awakening.
@JaxonH Was thinking of you watching this, the JaxonH Direct. Guess you're good to go.
I still don't know who Corrin is, but I was hoping if they showed Corrin it would be alongside Cloud and Bayonetta. Maybe there will be a $600 SSB Switch all amiibo edition? Unless they are saving Cloud for the FFVII remake on Switch and Bayonetta for Bayonetta 3? But no, I don't care about Corrin, but I've been waiting on the other 2 for awhile now.
So what do you think the chances are of Switch getting the FFVII remaster? Think it can handle it? We've seen several PS4 games on Switch now, but I'm not sure we've seen an only PS4 game, there have been PS3 or Wii U versions of all of them. FFXV is basically XCX but FF does look a little sharper.
@rjejr Good point. How about 2 new 3DS games in the year of the Switch! I mean I've been saying new games in 2017 for 3DS then drop it, but the number of new Nintendo games for 3DS is making me think that SwitchBoy might be a bit further off?
Yikes I'm not even half way through Fates yet. So many games so little time. 😃
@JaxonH Yeah, even though I think "Fire Emblem Warriors" is a total oxymoron, I have to admit that it was a good move to make a New 3DS version for those in the existing audience who won't/can't get an NS.
Everything else looks great! (Sans the mobile title, I'm not interested in that, but hopefully it will spread awareness of the series.)
@Torakaka @Sakura Well I guess this settles it, they are saving the Corrin, Cloud and Bayonetta amiibo for the SSB Switch reveal at E3. 5 months is a long time to wait, but they have Zelda, MK8D and a few 3DS games to promote until then. We've already seen a bit of Bayonetta so we know it's a thing. But the waiting, sheesh.
Heeeey apparently Studio Khara (aka Hideaki Anno's funhouse AKA The mad genius behind Evangelion) is going to be handling cutscenes/art in this game! That's incredible!
@rjejr Or they're waiting to announce it with the Heroes release date.
Was overall disappointed in Fates, it had many flaws.
I played a bit of Gaiden, it had it's own issues but a lot of potential I'm disappointed to not see revised in other titles. Hopefully that shines here.
I expected a 3DS Fire Emblem announcement today, but didn't expect it to come so soon. Very excited.
@aaronsullivan Well I did notice that new old 3DS game is late May, so that makes it before E3. The FE Warriors game is also on Switch, and that's just reality. PS4 had an entire first year of almost nothing but ports, and most games still get PS3 versions in Japan. So a Switch game also on 3DS I don't see as too horrible, it's new games on 3DS not on Switch that would be a problem. Even a SwitchBoy is going to cost more than a $79 2DS next year. So I still think a $200 Switch holiday 2018 or March 2019, Nintendo likes Feb/March for hardware for some reason. But it's coming, Japan doesn't buy home consoles that much. And parents don't spend $300 on kids toys unless Apple makes them. But you could be right, it could be later than we think. All of a sudden I'm really curious about E3.
This sounds great! It's like a reimagined version of the FE game we never got and it looks very interesting. Dungeons in a Fire Emblem game just sounds cool.
@Torakaka Heroes the mobile game? So many games today I kind of lost track. Amiibo for that might be cool, but no, and it's 2 weeks away. Which makes me think maybe you were joking and I missed it. Oh well.
@rjejr Yeah, I've been thinking Nintendo might unleash at least one more surprise before Swi-launch on March 3rd. But, really, I think Nintendo wants to build to a strong Holiday 2017. So, a couple of key secrets saved until E3 might be a very good idea.
Switch news is already slowing way down because we don't know when the next direct is yet. lol.
We still have a couple information detail directs to lead up until the launch too. Online being a key one, but also detailing those launch games a bit more... if Nintendo is serious about $50 1-2-Switch it has some splainin' to do.
Really cool to see a remake/"reimagining"/whatever of FE2 as that game seems to be a bit underappreciated compared to the rest of the series, but if it has Awakening/Fates's gameplay I'll be passing.
@AVahne The gameplay of Fates Conquest is generally agreed to be great and I have yet to see a well-explained criticism of it.
I'll be getting it for sure, I've never played FE2 before so having a remake is going to be sweet
It looks freaking awesome, but it should be on Switch imo. instead we get FE Warriors... At least a mainline game is on the way... In 2018.
@Jumpman Virtual Console titles would be cool, but I guess they thought everyone who wanted to play them already has through emulator.
@PlywoodStick
A Gaiden remake is fine even if it's using the Awakening/Farts gameplay, since it's so old, but I wouldn't trust the current IS with remaking anything between 4 and 10. True all those games had minor issues that the current IS COULD fix, however they're more likely than not to introduce and take away things that would destroy those games as well.
EDIT: BTW, anyone else hoping this new game will be all 2D art/sprites? The 3D models in the 3DS games have all been rather...rubbish, so the new game would look best with modern spritework.
@aaronsullivan We'll get a Zelda Direct in February, they have to explain the difference between the 2 versions and what all of those amiibo do - 5 new ones, Wolf Link, and hopefully the other Links and Ganandorf we just bought. Ok, we know what Wolf Link does, that still leaves the 5 new ones, Guardian, horse Link, arrow Link, Zelda, Boboklin. And they should explain about the mandatory 3GB install. And how the account system works - I'm not buying 3 Zelda Switch carts when we all have our own accounts on Wii U.
So yeah, they have some explaining to do still, that's all just for 1 game.
@AVahne I still want to know what exactly is your issue with Fates' gameplay.
I like the additions of shuriken weapons and their debuffing effects + the Attack/Guard Stance System with characters providing unique bonuses. Personal skills were a cool addition as well and Dragon Veins made maps more dynamic.
They had me sold at "Fire Emblem" and "dungeons".
@Caryslan It looks like it connects with fates in some way with King Garon at the end there, which means to have the "full" story, you'd have to buy four games!
@BranJ0 I may be wrong, but i don't think it's a remaster or remake of Gaiden, it just draws inspiration from that game.
As usually Japanese Fire Emblem came first, I usually go with Japanese version, but this time all versions are going to be released at the same time. I don't know how to choose now (considering shipping speed NA version actually comes first).
I have 2 big concerns. One is the censorship, as you know what happened to the last 2 titles. Another concern is the collection edition. Japanese version has a collection edition with Blu-ray that has 4 latest games' all in-game movie in HD, and I don't know if there will be collection edition in US and if the Blu-ray will be region-locked. So hard to make decision this time.
Welp two more amiibo for me to buy. What happened to Corrin and my pick for smash Bayonetta? I wonder if they will add the rest of the fire emblem amiibo to Fates?
Oh...
Btw, I have never played FE but I heard on FE series if your character died, you can't revive them whatsoever. Was it true ?
@IceAnt573
To put it in the simplest terms possible, it was boring/unappealing/uninteresting. I just didn't have any fun with the game whatsoever. Story, characters, gameplay, etc.
Nothing about the game made me excited to insert it back into my 3DS to start playing again. Unlike the games before it, it just wasn't FUN. At least for me and my close friends who were also avid Fire Emblem fans prior to Awakening.
@Anti-Matter
Not anymore if you choose. You can play Casual mode, where the characters come back after "dying" the next chapter or Phoenix mode will the characters will come back after "dying" the very next turn as if nothing had happened.
VERY VERY excited about this! Day One buy for me
It seems like they're moving away from the Waifu/Husbando elements in this title (Hopefully because they've been dominating the games too much lately tbh). Studio Khara doing the cutscenes is a definite bonus! I like the art as well!
Also glad Fire Emblem Warriors is coming to the New 3DS as an exclusive. The new 3DS is seriously lacking in exclusives and after the poor performance of Hyrule Warriors on the 3DS (Which also should have been exclusive to the New 3DS but gotta get them sales even if the game runs like poo poo) I'm glad they put it on slightly better hardware. I know it's not the best version but as someone who isn't exactly sold on the Switch, I'll be more than happy to get the portable version.
I've said this a few times now today but YES ,YES and YES ! NINTENDO JUST BLEW MY MIND with all this awesome Fire Emblem awesomeness and two new amiibo for the old amiibo collection as well both look to be great additions to my amiibo.
Just found out that this game's artist is apparently Hidari.
It has my interest now. For now at least.
@AVahne
I see...
This will make for a nice treat once my birthday rolls around again. (Ugh, 30 in May, where did that time go? Oh, right).
Gives me some hope for a Genealogy remake sometime in the future; potentially on Switch or 3DS, or both!
will be getting this for my new 3ds!!!
@AVahne I rather you do not put it in simple terms since you're still not really explaining what didn't work about Fates. The mechanics I listed was part of the reason why I had the most fun with this game.
@Decapre Unfortunately this means nothing. Nintendo published GBA games for a solid year after the DS came out and they continued DS support for quite a while after the 3DS launched. This is business as usual.
They didn't show any game play, but I'm in. Considering I have MK8 for the Switch in April. It will fill the void. If there is any for me.
@AVahne Yeah, it's pretty damn hard to top Shouzou Kaga... Even now, the guy's still at it trying to make an indie FE-like title, Vestaria Saga. His struggles against his former employer (Nintendo) in regards to Tearring Saga and Berwick Saga created the legal precedent which now allows games like Bloodstained to exist.
@Syrek24 Without the creation and information spread of previous FE's that came before, there would be no "modernization" of current or past FE titles. Roy and Marth's inclusion in Melee was not the first glimpse of Fire Emblem the West was given, just the most widely known "test survey." We learned about Fire Emblem's concepts before the N64 was released.
I find it incredibly ironic that you would praise Gaiden as "special" immediately after lambasting it and the rest of the venerable Shouzou Kaga era, to fit your particular narrative. Granted, Gaiden stands to gain the most by far from a remake, since it is a very old, yet advanced NES title.
Nevertheless, many of the concepts you take for granted (grinding, full promotions, modern plotline scope, multiple main characters, iconic soundtrack style, etc) have their roots in Gaiden. Many more concepts after that (skills, home base castles, arenas, multiple generations, etc) have their roots in the Jugdral saga. Do not criticize that which you are ignorant of.
Love the Amiibo's and if they do this with the other FE games that were a Japan exclusive then i would not mind it in the least
WHERE ARE CLOUD AND BAYONETTA??
@Frosty_09 If there's any game that needs a translation guide/patch, it's Berwick Saga.
With things like side quest missions from bounties and civilian requests (not just "fulfill X conditions to see Y missions"), food for guaranteed stat builds (instead of pure RNG-based growth), normalizing an expanded equipment range (including crossbows, knives, shields, and well-defined weapon and magic triangles), item crafting (ever wonder where the idea for Fire Emblem Fates' recipes came from?), horse stables (every horse-mounted character can buy/choose their own horse), a hugely expanded skill list (several times the size of even current FE skill lists)...
The list of updates from Kaga's previous work on FE goes on and on. Many of those ideas were apparently known by Nintendo before Kaga left, and were used in later entries of FE.
Oh yeah:
@SanderEvers I think the 3ds will be around longer than this year and next. Install base is pretty big and it is a different portable experience than the Switch. I'd liken it to the Bose Soundlink III to a Soundlink Mini. One can fit in your pocket and the other is more like a book.
@Rocko52 Expect to see lots of crazy demons, gushing blood, and unnecessary head games.
Classic FE Remake
OHHH!
Gaiden remake.
... weeew...
I mean it's not bad, but, there's better titles. Just sayin.
But recognition nonetheless.
He's dressed up like Shovel Knight!
@rjejr They find new and interesting ways to make me scratch my head with every announcement.
One of these days everything will come out perfect.
I was kind of hoping this would be on the switch but I still use my new 3ds all the time so one more to add to the collection. Glad they are going to continue to support the 3ds just hope it does not effect the switch.
OMG!! only just started Fates :-/ I will have no social life noooooooooo!!! Seriously, this is great news
Main duo confirmed as final DLC Sm4sh characters.
This is terrific news! I will be making a pre-order asap.
I'm glad that Ninty are putting more faith in Fire Emblem and I'm genuinely excited for this one. Lovely stuff!
Retail release and I definitely consider buying the game even though I'm not a big FE fan. I just don't really like digital as it takes a lot of space on SD card while catridges take only tiny amount of space. Yes digital is good for traveling but I have a case for catridges and I'm mostly home so yeah xD
The amiibos look great. Would get one if I wasn't already saving on those cute Poochy and Yoshi's ones from Wooly's World
I want this
@PlywoodStick
I read the person who just finished releasing the new Tear Ring Saga translation is now moving on to Berwick Saga, using the Chinese fan translation as a starting point.
Now that Ive played it, I didnt think Tear Ring was as good as FE, but Berwick always interested me. It looks weird (hexagon grids?) but I'd be stoked to see a translation released
Is this going to be more like a classic FE experience than Awakening (fair-to-middling) and (ugh) Fates (bleeeeech)? I want a game where the challenge is mostly self-contained in the battles, not in the grinding of relationships and city building and cooking and whatnot.
Never been into Fire Emblem, but this looks more like and RPG with some tactical elements rather than a full on tactical RPG. Colour me interested.
"Inspired". I love how they try to both get older people who wanted to get the 2nd game in a proper way while still avoiding to scare post-Awekening 's generation of players away.
Well, since I already played FE2, it's good to get a "new game" rather than a pure copy after all.
My biggest joy was when the artworks were shown: "oooh, no more Kosuki style!" (I like it - especially in "No more Heroes", "Speed Grapher" or "Bubuki Buranki" - but it was a strange mix in a medieval-like environment).
I never played this so I'm excited to be able to. Thank you Nintendo.
@JaxonH Yeah, Tearring was sort of an FE Lite, Kaga was figuring out where to go next. The hex grid actually works surprisingly well in practice, the closest earliest example I can think of to compare that to is Military Madness/Nectaris on the TG-16.
This made me very happy. Then we got FE Warriors for 3DS too. Yesterday's Nintendo Direct kicked the ass of last Thursday's presentation by 10x for me personally. Thank goodness, 3DS certainly will be supported at least through 2017.
I loved Gaiden. Hopefully they revisit the Super Famicom ones some time.
Soooo, this is a remake of the second Fire emblem, while the gba game is a remake of the first? Might be interesting, and it came out of nowhere. I have yet to properly play Fates though (only have finished 7 chapters), but I can buy Echoes in may, and play it at a later date.
It was a neat surprise when they showed this off during the direct.
I am wondering if they are thinking of doing other Fire Emblem remakes. They could launch Fire Emblem Echoes as its own series. With each entry in the series having its own subtitle.
I like the love Nintendo is giving to Fire Emblem to audiences outside of Japan. I just wonder, will I be able to use my other FE amiibo?
If they remake Mother 3, can I use my Earthbound amiibo??? Please???
Why are people upset about the 3ds getting games? Production on this likely started shortly after fates finished localization so it would have taken LONGER had it been NS bound because they would have to build the assets from scratch. Plus there are new games that were announced at last e3 on the way to 3ds. It will likely get a year or so of content. Or would you rather the baby giraffe drop off that the wiiu got? NS is getting the best version of FE Musou and an exclusive FE game. This is a nice way to tide over all of the 3ds owners AND possibly get them on the hype train so that when Switch FE comes out they will upgrade without a doubt. Now anyone going from 3ds to n3ds that is a bit weird I'd say since the system plays 99 percent of the games. and the FE musou game will look best on switch anyway.
Wow, I was not expecting this! I wonder if the free-roaming/dungeons will be similar to the Tower and Ruins from Sacred Stones..? I loved grinding in those areas haha
I am hyped!
Really happy it's on the new 3Ds not quite ready to give mine up yet. Great news about 2 new switch games too. Keep at it Nintendo
I have to say I was stunned to see a NEW 3DS game be announced let alone a new 3DS game from the Fire Emblem series. That's 3 titles on the 3DS now from a series that was to be killed after the 1st one.
Hyped for Warriors, but the 3DS one.....I am bad at FE. I mean I'm exceedingly, amazingly, horrifically bad at FE. I can play through on the worst of casual modes, barely without fully understanding why I'm doing so badly. I'm good at RPGs, I'm good with strategy games. But I never understand exactly what I'm supposed to be doing in FE after the first few levels. And yet I'm still somehow excited for this. I don't know why, but I am.
I'm very glad they announced FE Switch for 2018, but I fear that's getting into the E32014 situation with "Zelda!, Xenoblade!, Starfox!...uhh...someday...eventually...maybe...we think." Followed by E3 2015 "yeah..so...basically...everything you already heard about last year." Not that Sony didn't do the same thing last year.
I thought that I would never pick up a new game named Fire Emblem because the new direction the franchise took with fates.
but this game made me eat my words, damn!
@Ralizah That still remains to be seen. Awakening and Fates were basically two different styles of game. I really enjoyed Awakening, and my enjoyment of that got me to buy Fates. Fates let me down a great deal. The question is how many other people did it let down. Fates sold off Awakening's fame, so how many people didn't like the way Fates took the series after Awakening? That is what will affect the future of the series.
I am willing to give FE another shot, because the game sounds interesting, but if it was more Fates, I would of passed. Though FE Warriors is a guaranteed buy from me, course that is nothing like the main line series =)
Noticed some folks were wondering if this was digital only in the US. The picture at the top is of the front of a 3ds case, with an ESRB rating pending on the bottom left, meaning the US rating system, so I assume that we are getting physical.
@kotag I feel the same way. I really enjoyed Awakening, and was hoping for more in Fates, but didn't get that. But Awakening and the GBA releases on the wii u built up enough good will to make me want to give this new one a try.
@rjejr Can they really make an entire direct one more time about Zelda? So much has been shown. There are details about control and touchscreen I'd like to know but I don't want to see any more story or cinematics, I already started piecing it together in my head more than I want to. Saw some quote about the Switch version using the HD rumble so I want to know a bit about that I guess. But since I'm all in, it's less important...
I'm afraid you won't get too much about the Wii U version until after release. That Switch display in the Target, mine has one too, sort of sealed the deal there. Only people that need to know the Wii U version of Zelda exist are current Wii U owners. No need to advertise.
...Account systems though. That could change how many Switches I want to preorder. Not really. We are doing one, but that is one point of fear I have: how is Nintendo going to handle multiple accounts on this thing.
So, let's see. Potential Nintendo Directs:
Online service direct!
Virtual Console direct! (maybe those two combined)
Zelda direct!
Launch games direct!
That's four weeks and looks like we are already maybe skipping next week as no announcement yet. There are only 6 weeks until release — oh boy, I better save up!
@aaronsullivan " Only people that need to know the Wii U version of Zelda exist are current Wii U owners."
Well, there are 13.5 million currnet Wii U owners and ZERO current Switch owners, and there won't be any more than 2 million Switch owners for probably the entire month of March, so I'd say they better start promoting the Wii U version if they want to make their money back b/c there are a lot more of us than of them. And if word gets out the game isn't any good, or the Wii U version is just as good or good enough, then while people are reading their emails about their Switch pre-orders being canceled - you just know there will be at least 3 articles on NL about those - then those people will be buying the Wii U version. If Nintendo keeps being Nintnedo w/ their stock management the Wii U version might outsell the SWitch version of Zelda 2 - 1 when it releases. Though a lot of those people will rebuy it on Switch when they finally get one.
Really, if there were even 1 functioning brain cell at Nintendo HQ they would have made the 2 versions just different enough to people had a reason to buy both. Plenty of peopel buy both Pokemon games and those are practically the same. Some peopel bought and played both versions of TP. Nintnedo is losing sales making bother versions of the game the same on such different hardware. B/c even if both versions release the same day, Switch launch day, there still will be a lot of people who won't own a Switch until Christmas, so if the games were different enough, people would have bought the Wii U version day 1, Switch version for Christmas - that should be long enough apart for a 2nd play thru for some people. Promoting them as "the same game" only loses them sales.
And that's why they need a Zelda ND, to convince people they need to buy both versions. And you left out all of the amiibo. If they are selling 5 toys-to-life for $15 each then people should see what they do.
It's The Day of the Donald, don't expect any happy replies from me today, I'm in mourning. But I won't be watching any of it on Switch b/c Nintendo made a device that does both TV screen and a 6" 720p HD portable screen, but they left out all the streaming apps. No functioning brain cells, not a single one.
@Lizuka,
Thanks for the information.
@Syrek24
So just because I don't blindly conform to the standards set by the new generation of fans, I must be some old fart wearing light reddish hued spectacles huh?
1-5 I would agree are archaic (though 4 and 5 had certain aspects I find cool even today), however I find 6-10 FAR funner than the plop known as Awakening and Fates. Those two newer games surely add a lot to help newcomers but they also take a lot of steps backwards.
Go ahead and enjoy your new games. Your world must not be so tiny for you think that someone else who dislikes them must be a witch and burned, right?
Anyway if they ever make something that appeals to me again (which I highly doubt), I'll get it, but if it's just another Awakening or Farts, then no.
@IceAnt573
It can take a while to explain why I don't enjoy Fates, which is why I tried to simplify it as "I didn't have fun" (plus other words).
Yes Fates makes things a little smoother with some of menu and UI changes, and the castle thingamajig is "cute".
However...that's just it. Fates is at most a "cute" game when I think about Fire Emblem games. I can't take it seriously, nor do I have any real fun playing it. It's at most a nice novelty to play, but I don't get the same feeling I get with FE6-10 where the gameplay, story, characters, world, etc. all come together in a way that makes me wish to go back to them even long after I've beaten them. I know I'm being vague, but making lists is tiring and right now I have the flu =____=
