Nintendo has confirmed that the Wii U version of Super Smash Bros. will allow for 8 player fights.
The news came during today's special Nintendo Direct broadcast, and is tempered by the fact that the game will only support 8 players in offline mode. It was also confirmed that only certain stages would allow for so many players on-screen at once.
Special, larger stages have been developed to accommodate 8 players, and it's clear that this mode could never have been achieved in the 3DS edition β the characters would have been barely visible.
Are you looking forward to the headache of fitting 8 hyperactive people in your tiny living room?

Well I guess that all of the parties will be at my house then...
"The catch? It's offline only"
Shocking...
Talk about defeating the purpose. Well, this will be great for parties at least.
This is gonna be awesome when I have tons of people over!
Eh, I understand why. That Smash board game better be online though. I swear if it isn't...
Man, this looks awesome coupled with the huge stages. Gonna get hella hectic. Hope I can round up enough people for an 8 player game sometime.
This mode is probably really only good for drunken parties because I can't imagine you could actually try and have a serious competitive battle with that many player jumping around all over the place.
That's not a criticism but just and observation.
i cannot wait for this!
Too bad, but awesome as hell regardless!
That's my birthday party sorted for the next 4 years xD
Looks like it's me versus 7 level 9 CPUS ....
There is no way 8 player smash would work over the internet. Too much lag.
This mode has a chance to be fantastic. Finally, I have many reasons to get a Wii U! Thank you, Nintendo!
Well I only have 1 friend so I will not use this.
How do you connect 8 controllers? 4 x Wii U Pro Controllers (or Wii Remote(+) & Classic/Pro) + 4 GameCube Controllers via the adaptor?
@KeatonTS Don't be afraid...it'll be fun!
Awesome for crazy Smash parties!
@Ruthven
Any combination of controllers will be fine.
Wii U supports more than 4 wireless controllers at a time.
This looked like a lot of fun. I'll be spending a lot of time with the Kirby stage when I get the game!
Most hyped game of the year now. As so many before me Mewtwo in Smash again. Now people can stop whining and moaning.
WHAT?! It IS REAL?!! OH HEAVEEEEN!! Calling my 7 friends RIGHT NOW! (schoolgirl giggle)
OOOOOOOO
OOOOOOOO
8 PLAYER SMASH. FOX ONLY. FINAL DESTINATION. NO ITEMS.
Are we surprised it's offline? Surely anyone would be stupid to suggest eight players online seeing as how it already struggles with three.
@IxC
I've never tried to connect more than 4 Wii Remotes/Wii U Pro Controllers... will try tonight
@IxC - But does it really connect 8 wirelesly? I'm guessing the adpatr is a requirement for 8 player otherwise it might not have been made and promoted so much.
3DS owners were cheated
I hope we get some local Smash events that will be focused around 8 players.
@rjejr It hasn't been promoted much, since it was just announced. The speculation about 8 player was based on the leaked 3DS sound file. You can also use the 3DS as controllers, and it doesn't require 8 players. Just the ability to be able to play 5 players is a great value to me.
@rjejr
There's no reason any combination of controllers shouldn't work.
The Wii U gamepad uses Wifi to communicate with the Wii U system because it needs to stream the video as well, so button inputs are also transmitted via Wifi at the same time.
Wii U pro controllers, wii remotes, wii classic controllers, (all other accepted wireless controllers) use bluetooth.
Bluetooth used to have a device limit of 7 I believe, but now, with newer versions of bluetooth, the limit is 10 devices. 10 low power devices. Contollers are low power.
I'm not sure whether the 3DS uses Wifi or Bluetooth to communicate with the Wii U. It doesn't matter really.
The Wii U should be able to support more than enough wireless controllers without the gamecube adapter being required.
Was hoping for 4 v 4 against some online friends (4 in one house 4 in another) but still really happy to see this as 6 at once is going to be possible at my house.
this sucks that sucks, this character isn't in the the game that stage is too old bla bla bla. people, please. Have you seen the same direct I've seen? You guys don't deserve this game.
Smash Wii U will be truly epic.
@Mega719 not at all, we got our money's worth.
Can someone from NL confirm how the controllers will be connected? Will 8 wireless controllers work?
About the controllers: the site has been updated (http://www.smashbros.com/us/howto/entry10.html) and you can even connect eight 3DS systems. Basically play however you want.
@Mewtwo21 i know but it's unfair people without a Wii U gets smaller content compared to the Wii U (not that I'm upset) people do get Mewtwo by getting both versions
@Mega719 It's not unfair, it's just how things are. You have the same game, both in a home console and portable console; the home console will be the better version overall.
It's not like the Wii U version existing takes any of the excellence that the 3DS version is already.
This is fantastic!!
To those complaining about offline only: be thankful it exists! This is something that we only dreamt of while playing melee on the cube!
@Retro_on_theGo Nintendo has poor online infrastructure. Mario Kart 8 demonstrated that with all the latency issues. Even if the issues were masked you could toss a shell at someone hit them and nothing would happen.
That would be significantly worse in a even higher paced game like Smash. It doesn't defeat the purpose though, Sakurai did intend for Smash to be a party game and frankly 8 player smash couldn't really be competitive.
Sounds like only a mode my brother and his billion friends will use just to bust each other's ***** for a few hours.
Super Lag Bros.
Only disappointment in Smash U SO FAR. I will never really use this ever. Too hectic 4 me. And it would tooooooo laggy.
TAKE MY MONEY NINTENDO!! NO WAIT TAKE MY BELLS TAKE EVERY CENT I HAVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
DONE . SOLD . PRE-ORDER ON NOVEMBER 1!!!
It's a shame I don't have seven friends.
cool, now when we get together no one has to sit out, perfect!
WOW that is a lot of content unreal this should sell some wiiu consoles!
6, 7, and 8 players?! This is great! I mean, REALLY great news! I'm planning a Smash party for friends the day after the game releases, so with how many controller options we have, no one has to wait anymore! If we can still do Team Battles with 8 Player Smash, that'd be even better!
@StaticWind Yep, up to 4 teams! (BTW, cool avatar).
One of the things I'm most excited for! I love it when things get hectic!
My body and Wii U is ready.....
@IxC - Thank you very much for taking the time to write that all out and answer my question. And I did have that 7 bluetooth number in my head, its what the PS3 was limited to.
For me 8 player SSB isnt about the living room, its about Conan Obrien playing on tje scorebosrd at Cowboys stadium or other large venue events w/ colossal monitors.
Also, if you dont have 7 friends or spare controllers you can still have 7 CPU, or 4 players 4 CPU.
@Ryno - if you have 7 amiibo you can fight them all at once
A great mode but I only had three friends so we probably may not bother with this mode but it is a great mode for party play.
@ModernMARVEL Yes! Even better! I'm gonna have so much fun when I can get some friends together. Thanks!
8 PLAYER SMASH, NO ITEMS, BOWSER JR AND THE KOOPALINGS ONLY, BIG BATTLEFIELD
Does the average Nintendo fan have 7 friends?
I saw this coming. I thought about if 8 players smash was on a big battlefield and I'm obviously not the only one. Little Mac only.
Looks like I gotta find 7 other people.
I really hope they release additional colors and designs of WiiU Pro controllers, that's what I wanna play Smash on and so far only black and white, if I'm getting 8 I'd like them to be different or fun
@Mega719 No they weren't, not by a longshot. The 3DS version is the most value you'll get on a handheld game for the next 10 years I'd wager. Naturally the Wii U version is going to have more- it's an exponentially more powerful system with many more capabilities. You didn't seriously expect to get the exact same version on a handheld that has the processing power of a pocket watch, did you?
This is not an instance of the 3DS version being cheated of content. This is an instance of the 3DS version being filled to the brim to the point where it's cup was overflowing, but it's still a $40 game on a pocket gaming device. We're paying 50% more in price for the home console version- if anything the Wii U version is being cheated because I certainly don't think it has 50% more content.
If anybody is interested Nintendo has a new 4 minute video on Youtube showing the 8 player w/ 4 people if you want to see some of it in action. Its mostly about amiibo. At the end when they show the usual amiibo slogan w/ the 5 games it now has Hyrule Warriors on the bottom. Sorry I csnt link very well on my tsblet, Im sure NL will cover it in the morning when they wake up.
Talk about getting smashed, too bad its not online for fun.
Sweet, every Sunday with my Niece and Nephews one of us has to usually sit out in most games, now we can all play at once.
I'm curious to see how 8 player smash battles would work. It may require the 4 player gamecube controller adapter (as the WiiU doesn't naturally support 8 wireless controllers...though not sure how hard it would be to get around that from a technical standpoint).
I think 8 player free for all would indeed be chaos, but a 4v4 or 3v3 team battle could work quite nicely I imagine. Or if there are different levels of skill, adding more players to a team could help balance that / give the newer players a chance to experiment (i.e. 2v3, 3v5, etc).
I think it's pretty cool, and I kind of understand why it's not online. The lag would be terrible.
@Ryno ....Why is Bowser normal here? xD
Can not wait to try this out! Best news in SSB4 as of yet!
I knew the 8-player smash would come to the Wii u version! That will be a pretty chaotic affair though. Oh dear.
Amazing.
@Ruthven http://twitter.com/ProJared/status/525459525327794176/photo/1
Wow, that's crazy that you can even hook up 2 GameCube adapters to have all 8 people play with GameCube controllers if you want.
How many people even have 7 gaming friends to play offline with? I understand that there are technical limitations, but it seems kind of silly to put effort into making a bigger multiplayer mode that isn't compatible with the best way to find more players.
Awesome though this is, I must echo others and note that I'm unlikely to manage getting six other people at the house for an 8-Megaman brawl.
NL, I don't think this not being in the 3DS version was also due to technical limitations. If 3DS could handle this, 3DS could handle IC's with 4 players.
What,s the fun about a fox only match in final destination? anyway, i always dreamed with a match with 8 fighters YESS!!
This is probably the best feature out of the 50 things announced. Shame there is no online mode...
Here's the 8 player SSB w/ amiibo video I mentioned last night. So you don't need 8 friends or 8 controllers or even amiibo for 8 player, knowing Nitnedo you can probably set this up w/ 0 player (to put op on a big screen before an event) or let your 1 amiibo TRAIN vs 7 CPU players to build up it's strengths.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C3c_JDDp99k
HAHAHA i don't even have 7 friends.
Hosting Smash parties with everyone bringing their Wiimotes lol
it seems like too much
@StaticWind No prob!
I'd say having the 'possibility/potential' of 8 players is pretty great. I'm sure there won't always be that many people playing the game at once, but I've often had 5-6 people around who want to play Smash, so now this opens up the ability to add them also into the fray. If the amiibo thing goes viral, then it allows a 4 player match with everyone teamed up with their own amiibo, to bring the count to 8 (similar to the commercial). This makes the amiibo prospect of being a 'training partner' much more of a reality as it doesn't remove any human player slots (from the standard 4player perspective).
@DeltaPeng good points there! Having your own personal fighting buddy is an awesome idea and especially with 8 players. The ad really got the points across, in a cheesy way of course! I ad actually won me overπ haha!
@Pigeon
