This article seems more like a review than a preview. I'm guessing that there wasn't enough time to finish playing it to rate it? Anyway, I hope this does well and I plan to buy it to support a local game developer. Also because it looks fun.

Maybe Nintendo specifically limited the questions NL could ask, because battle mode omission is a big one and there was no direct question on this. It is only indirectly addressed in the last question and poorly answered.

My most vivid memory on the DS is not being able to connect as my router didn't support the outdated WEP protocol. Things like this are what people mean when they say Nintendo doesn't get online.

On the Wii I had much more success. Brawl was a lagfest and broken whenever I tried it. But I did have much happier memories of Mariokart Wii, improving my times for every single course so that I would be in the top 10 percentile. The best feature was being able to watch the top scorers race and learn the best lines through the course.

My other fondest memory is playing Mario Strikers and improving my game by leaps and bounds when I learned new ways of scoring from other people. That game has such great depth and balance and is criminally underrated for competitive play. Most importantly sharpening my skills online enabled me to learn the skills to win the extremely challenging Striker Cup!

Sad to hear the last major 3rd party is pulling out :( For the record, I love Ubisoft games and bought ZombiU, Splinter Cell Blacklist, Rayman Legends and Assassin's Creed III for WiiU.

I makes me so sad to see Nintendo failing

If Nintendo wants the WiiU to be a success they have to design more games that take advantage of the asymmetric nature of the gamepad. Leveraging Nintendo's strength of couch coop helps too. Since Nintendo isn't stepping up the plate I'm happy indie devs are

I backed this project pronto. I hope it reaches the goal, good luck guys.

I've seen physical copies of these games new for cheaper. I think Ubisoft is on board with cheaper pricing, judging by their retail pricing but Nintendo should really get its act together and realize there are competitors like Steam that are way more price competitive in the digital space.

I really enjoyed playing Mario Strikers online, that was also a good implementation. Of course MarioKart was good too, and Super Smash Brawl was horrible.

With the Wii and DS backward compatibility as major selling points of the new system you would think they would keep the servers on longer. This will in no way make current owners upgrade to the new systems as I think it's just a cost thing.

Can Nintendo release the server code to allow users to run servers?

Have they used xbox live before? As a service Xbox Live is way ahead of anything Nintendo is doing and perhaps even what they are proposing. There are no games on xbox live for smart phones, but the ease with which you can buy is certainly really well done

@jcags You are right I was just copying what was said earlier in the thread. From the numbers I was able to find WiiU is doing slightly better than Dreamcast did in its first year. Maybe NL can write an article with more thoroughly researched numbers?

I will correct my post

I'm a WiiU owner and happy with it (already have 8 games +), but these sales numbers are truly depressing.

  • Black Friday sales must have been low. Probably not going to get much better through December.
  • Super Mario 3D didn't help and I thought it would (love it, it's a classic already in my books).
  • It's only doing slightly better than Dreamcast, although it should be noted that PS3 had a rough start as well
  • I have high hopes for MK8 and Smash, but if Mario 3D can't do it, I have new found doubts

I'm nervous about the future of the WiiU. They are going to have to take drastic action soon it looks like, but I don't know what they can do...

  • get rid of touchscreen controller?
  • release a x86 based console with more power (on par with xboxone/ps4) in a year or two and support the touchscreen controller as an extra?
  • take a massive loss on WiiU hardware?
  • Buy Oculus Rift

The third party support is getting to an extreme situation now where even first party games are not enough to sell the system. I'm sad

Time just ran an article from Matt Peckham titled:

10 Reasons I’d Pick the Wii U over the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One Today
The (strong and getting stronger) case for Nintendo's flagship console in 2013.

A few inaccuracies in the article but makes a good case for the system.

I was initially really excited about the 2nd screen and even though I've played a lot of NintendoLand and ZombiiU and think it's implemented well there, I don't think we've seen its full potential yet. I was doubtful about the DS at first as well, but that eventually worked. I'm hoping the same for the WiiU, but so far I don't see it standing out as a feature enough and unfortunately don't see any games in the future either, sadly enough

Great opinion piece Thomas. Glad to hear you at least give other genres a try. For me I think Nintendo's strength is fun games and the best local multiplayer games. But what I think they are missing is multiplayer can be really fun with friends over the internet as well and almost recreates the local multiplayer setting. It's especially hard now that I'm older to find time for couch coop.

For me I like a wide variety of games and it can often depend on my mood at any given time. The thing that makes me sad is if you choose Nintendo, you are forgoing a large part of the market, while in the past, you could get both the best 3rd parties had to offer as well as Nintendo's excellent first party games.

As for the holiday season sales, it will be absolutely critical to WiiU's success how well this Mario title does. I'm hoping it kicks donkey as the reviews have all lined up, I think it's just a matter of proper advertising to get the word out now.
Please watch the profanity — TBD

i don't know what the talk about being critical on Nintendo from Nintendo Life is about. The people that say Nintendo Life is biased against seem like they don't read any sources besides NL.

In my opinion, if anything, they are biased for Nintendo. I come here for Nintendo news and they are great at delivering it, but i always read the site with the mind that they are likely biased for Nintendo especially when compared to sites that cover video game news from all manufacturers.

Maybe it's just because the site only reports on Nintendo products, but sometimes it seems NL is not very knowledgeable to what else is out there so they don't have a good point of reference. Perhaps its the nature of the site that is colouring my opinion, but perhaps I'll follow the writers on twitter (or listen to their podcast?) to see if it's true.

booopn commented on Review: Wii Sports Club: Tennis (Wii U eShop):

I'm waiting for the boxing game as well because it had the most depth out of any of the wii sports games. I really hope they fix the lag online. How can Nintendo not be able to implement online gaming in this day and age? FPS shooters have to send way more data and they do so with minimal lag. Hitting a tennis ball is so much simpler and there shouldn't be any lag. It makes me sad that Nintendo can execute

booopn commented on Review: Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Blacklist (...:

I wanted to see the differences with other systems emphasized in this review, because this is one of the rare reviews that focuses on WiiU, yet the review barely mentions the WiiU features. How is the gamepad used in this game? Are the graphics relatively better than other systems? Are there different control options?

Also a mention of the features that it lacks would have been helpful too like no local coop where it worded in the article as "offline co-op is posted missing" which is confusing.

There is no mention of the bugs that currently exist for the online (the review can be revisited if a patch is released down the road) and no commentary on the spies vs mercs which is one of the most popular modes (maybe they are related). To me the multiplayer is one of the game's strongest selling features, but the review skims over this aspect.

I haven't played it yet (sitting on my shelf awaiting me to finish Pikmin3),but other reviews I've read state that it goes back to stealthier roots compared to the last SC release. A lot of the review seems to dock it for not being stealthy enough, which I suppose is a personal opinion.

I don't have a problem with the final score at all, but the missing information from the review is just sloppy and at worse misleading.

Playing Pikmin3 with my wife, so hopefully will be able to get some time together to play. Otherwise I've been trying out Magic 2013 since it was free for Xbox Live Gold members and it has been pretty fun (and addictive).

Here's my experience with Splinter Cell Blacklist in Toronto Canada. I normally don't preorder games, but this time I did hoping it would help out initial orders of the game. When I got to the store, there is normally a RewardZone (loyalty program) bonus of $10 for preordering advertised on the paper cutout. It was there for all other platforms except for the WiiU.

I asked a rep about this and they said the bonus should apply to all preorders. I went ahead and preordered it, but it didn't show up in my account. I had to call in and get them to put the bonus $10 for preordering. Inconsistent support /advertising from Best Buy is unfortunate because no one wins (consumer/best buy/Nintendo/Ubisoft)

I haven't looked for it in stores since I had it preorded, but when I did pick up my copy at the store I remember several copies on the shelf.

That being said, I was disappointed when the reviews came out and said that local coop was not supported, which is a strong reason i bought this game, since my WiiU is mostly used for local multiplayer. That saddens me. I haven't even tried it yet (still playing Pikmin3), but hopefully when I do the bugs will be patched away.

Anyway, I bought it to support a local studio (Ubisoft Toronto) and to support the WiiU. Looks like I'll be shafted for my loyalty. That makes me sad, but I don't regret my decisions.

Found the review a bit lacking, and sounds like the reviewer didn't play that much of it. Was no one on staff a fan of this long running series? Not sure why the reviewer even mentions the word RPG as this is a straight up strategy game. Some context on how this game fits within the other releases of this series would have been appreciated. Also conveying the general goal of the game (ie unite China) through managing a kingdom and going to war was never really mentioned
