I'm dissapointed. If any Direct needed to be big it was this one.
No Mario 3 is incredibly odd. It would have been an easy release and would have at least given Wii U owners a bone.
Thank you.
We were not supposed to get our hopes up but i did and this exceeded. LITTLE MAC!? HELL YES!!!!!!!!!! and X will be GOTY just saying.
Thank you for the GBA support WiiU.
@Ron1212 It was big. X, Bayo 2, smash, MK8, and GBA VC are all a big deal.
@SparkOfSpirit Woah. Woah. Let's not forget NES Remix 2 here. Cause that is totally a replacement for the real deal. :/
I'm so dissapointed no release date for AA v. PL in NA hope they haven't backed off publishing it
Lots of sequels and games nobody asked for (inazuma eleven? steel diver?! that dumb baseball game with the dog?!) and X's gameplay seems as boring as Xenoblade. Pass.
Little mac in SSB was a cool news.
The best part was the GBA games announcement and of course MARIO KART 8!!!!
Mario Kart 8, Donkey Kong Country : Tropical Freeze, Kirby Triple Deluxe and X for me.
@Ron1212 Keep complaining.
Mario Kart is looking so hyped and finally a release date! Looking to be a good year~ This was a great Direct.
I'm a bit glum after that...
@vivosaur Agreed on X. If it doesn't win, then I lose all faith in the gaming industry.
No X?
"Ustream sucks" was funny, thanks for the youtube link, maybe next time.
@vivosaur Peope on here will ALWAYS find something to whine about. But i can hardly get used to it. I found todays presentation pretty awesome
Mario Kart 8 remains jaw-dropping every time I see it! Really makes me wonder how pretty Nintendo will be able to make the next Zelda.
lol man...
man some people are never pleased.
Anyway, I'm happy. to me Bayo2 was the main highlight.
That was awful! Excited about Little Mac though.
Wait, I didn't get to see Little Mac... did he have a trailer...?
Gonna main a Koopaling for sure.
Glad to see Mario Kart 8 getting a release date, but May 30th is a bit far away. None the less, this is very exciting for me, and I can't wait for it.
What will happen to Mario Kart Wii Online?
Little mac was awesome. Glad to see another mk8 trailer but I really didn't need it. The game was already coming out real soon. I was very pleased to see more of X but the lack of footage was a bit disappointing. The rest of the direct meant nothing to me, personally. If anything seeing more bayo2 footage has removed any interest I had in it.
Oh, I liked the presentation I was just mentioning that the lack of Mario 3 is strange when 3DS got a couple of "after the presentation" games and Wii U got none. It would have been an easy thing to do.
@minotaurgamer You must not be big into RPGs then, because that was glorious.
I am sad.... they didn't present anything new other then eshop stuff..... E3 better be HUGE!!!!! Otherwise Nintendo, this will be another lackluster year.
I am sad.... they didn't present anything new other then eshop stuff..... E3 better be HUGE!!!!! Otherwise Nintendo, this will be another lackluster year.
That was a great Nintendo Direct, it had exactly what I was wanting. More Smash Bros. info and an official Mario Kart release date! Woo!
Where is the smash bros trailer?
X and bayonetta 2 are looking great, I wouldn't say no to metroid fusion on the gamepad.
The little mac trailer was great, we had some nice info on indie games.
What more do you lot want
I can't get over how good X looks
The problem is that we have known of all these games for some time now we need more new good stuff
@Gioku Yeah, he did. Check out the Smash website to see him GIVE SONIC ZEE UPPERCUT!!!!!!!!!
@Gioku that's what I'm wondering, when did Little Mac come in?
I was expecting some WiiU release windows, at least, and a new WiiU announcement, but that all went to the 3DS.
Overall it was pretty good.....new Smash Bros character and some X gameplay!
i cant understand why the Wii U is getting GBA VC support and not the 3ds ..
Lil Mac was straight boss. However, Wii Fit trainer wasn't worried! LOL
Anyway, MK8 just got more hype and I'm SOOOOO getting Bayonetta 2. WOOO!! Okay I'm done.
Great direct, super pumped a bout the next few month and year.
@minotaurgamer
X looks boring !?
Er............I dunno what to say to you
Give me Mario Kart 8 and Mario Golf World Tour NOW!
It's funny how people are desperate for release dates...DON'T YOU PEOPLE GET IT? Getting a release date will not make the game come out any sooner...or perhaps the wait will take longer since you keep waiting for that specific day.
I thought the direct was outstanding! You guys realize these aren't to announce the next big Zelda game right? That's for E3. People really shouldn't complain when like 3 directs ago the "BIG" news was Pikmin 3 DLC, a new Donkey Kong Trailer, and a returning smash character.
excellent direct, and mk8 lands right after my last exam
You can't have a new game every direct, we had hyrule warriors last time
Can't wait for Mario Kart 8, and GBA vc.
The only thing I really cared about in that span of 41 min was X and Bayonetta 2.
The Good:
The Bad:
The Ugly:
@JogurtTheYogurt because the Wii U is better. Much better.
I would have liked to see at least one surprise Wii U announcement.
Anyway, I'm happy with what they showed of Mario Kart 8, it's coming along really nicely. The game looks beautiful and I can't wait. Interestingly this game is releasing on the day of my graduation.
Can't wait for Kirby: Triple Deluxe it looks amazing.
Also Little Mac in Smash Bros :3
@Funny_Moblin If you have release dates then you can decide what to buy accordingly which is good for you but bad for Nintendo (As you will buy less you don't actually want that much).
Steel Diver! I loved the first one. It was my first 3DS game. It's funny, I imagined a three dimensional Steel Diver sequel years ahead of this.
@Funny_Moblin Ha. Please oh please tell me you are joking
The only thing I expected and didn't get was some sort of virtual console rollout/promotion. Still, that awesome (except for the final smash...) Little Mac trailer was more than enough to compensate. Good I didn't let my hopes too high.
Yoshi's Island looked much smoother than Kirby for whatever reason.
I thought the direct was pretty great! Although, I am VERY dissappointed by the fact that there was only one Wii U game announced. Still, Nes Remix 2 does look good.
I was expecting them to describe a bit on their future plans. AND NO REGGIE???!!!>.< does anyone know who that one dude was?
Great direct, I'm pumped. Bayonetta 2, Mario Kart 8, Smash bros U all pre-ordered. I think I need to get a second job for this upcoming 3ds library gaawddd looks incredible.
Pretty good! Loved it.
This was one of the best directs in ages and people are still complaining? sheesh Nintendo can't catch a break.
Anyone able to DL Steel Diver yet? I keep refreshing but nothing
That direct was buggy and I missed the X gameplay.
I saw maybe a whole 20 minutes ughh i hated the lag but anyways Little Macs reveal alone makes this a great direct to start the year off with I just don't understand why they gave the 3ds most of the focus they should learn to split it more evenly
@JacketsNest101 Yea, but we already knew about those games. Where's the new announcements?
MK8 looked absolutely amazing. Cant wait to get my hands on this gorgeous game!
Well the Wii-U really needs more games and they didn't announce anything new for it, so I can totally understand people being disappointed.
@I-AM-REGGIE Considering the state Nintendo's in right now, we needed a new game announcement.
I'm extremely happy that they show more X and Bayonetta 2. But still no date on X? Why the freaking delay?
The lucky 7 was confirmed!
Mario Kart, Bayonetta 2 and X all look great, but we already knew they looked great, and I'm sure most of us had already decided we were buying them. I just don't get excited by seeing new footage of stuff. The list of Nintendo games I want this year is exactly the same as it was yesterday, so can understand people being disappointed. Nothing has changed. Surely even those that loved the new footage were already planning to buy those games?
No SMT X FE stuff =( Zelda HD ? Why no GBA für 3DS ?
Still ... MK8 and SMB looks excellent and 'X' looks like and sounds pretty much like a dream come true, an even more amazing version of the brilliant Xenoblade, but since there is no date ... not in a hurry to get a Wii U at least until MK8 goes nutz in May
Look very closely when Luigi bumps into Mario.
Weapon de omasse shop - If I hadn't already played an item shop tale I would have probably gone for that.
@Peach64 Exactly. The games look awesome, but we already knew about them for some time.
Donkey Kong will be awesome and its coming soon!
@Emblem It's still not up.
@TruenoGT @SparkOfSpirit Steel Divers up!
Of course people are bashing or ignoring Rusty. It is a new IP.
If you want a new IP to be an instant classic, keep waiting then.
@sinalefa I actually thought Rusty looked cool, but people tend to not give non-action IPs a chance until they play them.
Tropical freeze&mk 8 can't get here soon enough.Bayonetta&x look awesome,and I hope we get those games soon rather than later.Kirby&yoshi new island look fun,but it's more of the same which is fine by me I love those games.So they finally confirmed gba games.Im sure anyone left out of the ambassitor program will love the first servings of titles,but those of us waiting for
new advance titles will probably be waiting for awhile just like we did with the nes games.Im not even going to try to fool myself that Nintendo has the resources to handle n64 or GameCube when we haven't got to the gba or ds titles yet.
in the Direct video, at 1:45, does anyone else absolutely love the graphic-novel/cel-shaded look to the stage & littleMac vs Samus in that little clip? I know it's not gameplay but its a cool look. Reminds me of viewtiful joe.
otherwise, I'm disappointed in this direct. They had a chance to blow the lid off and get some new hype for Wii U after weeks of bad news, apologies, and promises. Would've been a great time to show off an official Zelda U announcement trailer and/or a new game we haven't heard about.
More info on the same games and not even release dates for games that we've known about since before Wii U even launched (Bayonetta 2, Super Smash, X...)
I was completely sold on that Nintendo Direct the moment the Koopa Kids showed up!!!! Could not be happier about that
Weapon Shop de Omasse and Child of Light look interesting... but the Direct won the moment I heard Monolith - not even Nintendo themselves can beat that omnipresence of a game!
@SuperSNESLiam
cry moar
well I have a ps3 and ads xl too. Got tons of games for them and getting dk, mk8, x, nes remix and maybe bayonetta too. WAS hoping for maybe a teaser for a new wiiu game or 2 for this year. It is kind of annoying cause I want the wiiu to succeed like the wii did. Was also hoping for some n64 or cube games for the vc not gba games...
@rjejr There was X in there.
those who are dissapointed, you got your hopes up too high but that for me was by far the best direct since e3. they said it was focused on games coming out towards the end of spring. so why would they show anything new. also little mac is beautiful.
AHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!! WHY?? Just give me SMB3 on my 3DS! Why are you guys doing this to us? And why do the GBA games have to be on the Wii U? Classic handheld games are supposed to be Virtual Consoles for the current handheld, NOT the console. By the way, Japan gets NES Remix 1+2 for retail, and it looks awesome. Of course it's not here!!
I did like the footage for the already-announced games, though. The Koopalings may be a bit pointless and waste of character space, in my opinion though. Nothing else interested me... Well, besides NES Remix 2, but I'll wait for the Retail announcement.
Looks like I shall be picking up
and I bet that won't be all the games I purchase this year. Keep it up Nintendo.
@JogurttheYogurt Nope if the Wii U has all the games 3DS has, it would definitely be better...plus the games would be better because of a more powerful console. Anyways, how many people do you see outside playing their 3DS?
And yet, still no SMB3. Way to keep trolling Nintendo...
Hardly even watched the DKCTF footage, since it's only one week 'till I get to play it myself!
Anyone notice that they didn't say 'Available 2014' after the X footage?.. Also it doesn't look as though development has progressed that much since E3. Late 2015 I reckon. Difficult not to be disappointed
For the Smash Bros. Trailer, I like Little Mac's reveal and his unique K.O move, but I hope it's not cheap, as I saw the meter fill up quickly....
@Nintendaholic They kind of always show something new, even if they it's focused on games in the upcoming months.
And my hopes weren't really that high. Maybe if they at least gave an update on Shin MegamiXFire Emblem and announced a new game, then it would be ok.
Nintendo we didn't forget about Yarn Yoshi so was uuuupppp
That was a great Nintendo direct (I don't enter with any expectation). Thanks to the ustream I missed part of the smash bros and most of the Pokemon battle trozei and professor Layton, so this is a nice way to catch up.
I was actually quite pleased with this Nintendo Direct. I wasn't expecting huge announcements like a new Starfox but I was happy! Little Mack, Mario Kart 8 and GBA for Virtual Console was my favorite announcements!
I was actually quite pleased with this Nintendo Direct. I wasn't expecting huge announcements like a new Starfox but I was happy! Little Mack, Mario Kart 8 and GBA for Virtual Console was my favorite announcements!
This Direct was awesome! I can't understand why so many people are complaining. It's like a bunch of rotten, spoiled little children. Nintendo gave us pretty much everything we had been asking for:
GBA games on VC
Release dates for MK8, Mario Golf, and Kirby
Metroid Fusion on VC
X footage
Bayonetta 2 footage
a few surprises (NES Remix 2, Little Mac)
@CamWFC91 Yep i was waiting for a release date and then noticed they didn't say a thing. All the previous info has said 2014, they also hired loads of new staff so maybe they are expanding the game due to its importance.
That said its been in development for years so i'm not super worried.... yet. I won't be super surprised if it gets pushed to early 2015 though.
Must be April 1st must me. Serious the bloody tech demo stee diver gets a sequal. Couldnt the developers time been better spent mmmm I dont know A BLOODY WII U
GAME
Keep telling people, you're gonna have to wait for E3 for big new announcements. E3 is only 4 months away people. Release date for X? E3. Release date for Bayonetta 2? E3. Release date for Smash Bros 4? E3. Zelda U reveal? E3. SMT x Fire Emblem news? E3. Yoshi's Yarn news? E3. New game reveals? Well, E3. But apparently ONM is featuring a new Wii U game on front cover of next month's issue.
Don't forget, we JUST GOT a new Wii U game announced. Sonic Boom, which is going to be a pretty big deal (TV show, mass marketing, the works). And let's be honest here, the game looks fantastic, Couple that with the ONM announcement coming and I don't see what people are complaining about. It's like it's never enough. A new game for Wii U got announced less than a week ago, AND we have an announcement coming in ONM. This was a monthly Direct, NOT E3 in February.
Having said all that, nothing too big revealed today, but I still think it was one of the better Nintendo Directs. NES Remix 2 is EXACTLY what I asked for in the Club Nintendo survey. Game for game. So I'm VERY pleased about that. And the Koopalings in Mario Kart 8? Genius! That Pokemon Battle Trozei looked great (love Pokemon puzzlers), GBA games coming to Wii U soon is good news- I'm buying ALL of them. As for the rest, all the trailers looked fantastic. Taking off work day of DKC's release next Friday.
I know it can be frustrating not knowing when a game is coming out. I like specific release dates too guys, so I do know how you feel. Nonetheless, us knowing isn't going to change or "speed up" the process at all. Games come out when they're ready. So rest assured, knowing exact dates will do nothing to speed up the waiting process. When games are within 3 months of release (like Mario Kart 8), then we'll get a release date. Or at E3 for sure.
The problem with the Mario Kart 8 trailer is that they don't show the right stuff.
They show shots of them racing, but why not focus on what makes this one new. What happened to Mario Kart TV on Miiverse which was shown at E3 last year? What about the gamepad? Any other features? I'm sold on the game, of course. But I don't know what I want to know.
And the "unexpected characters"?! What? Koopalings? Who cares? They were basically a cop-out to add 8 new characters. They're also appearing way too regularly at the moment.
Unexpected characters would be people like Link, Samus & Kirby. You could have unlocked a Nintendo character after each cup. It would've been amazing.
I'd say direct was cool, Little Mac is boss. X footage is also pretty boss, but sadly no Hyrule Warriors update.
@JacketsNest101
X winning 'Game of the Year'??
I doubt very much that a niche JRPG that will sell under a million copies will ever receive that accolade. Let alone in 2014...I bet its not releasing this year.
VERY underwhelming Direct. A bunch of eShop junk nobody asked for (THOSE were the Level 5 games!?), nice to get a bit more info on Mario Golf, and then a little bit more info and new trailers for a bunch of games we knew about YEARS ago.
E3 can't come fast enough!
After that I am now very curious about Yoshi and the soccer game and the blacksmith one, I'm now sold on DK and hype has reached new levels for smash, also LUDWIG!
@JaxonH Exactly. That's what I just posted too, I agree. Release dates will not hurry up by knowing them. I know @unrandomsam responded saying people want to know them in order to know what games to buy and when, and that is a good point, but many people freak over release dates.
By the way, don't worry Jaxon, maybe your desire/prediction of Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon for Wii U will be shown at E3. I'd like that too.
@Falkor Did they really give the Mario Kart 8 release date in this direct? And all of those things were expected by most of us, we needed a few more surprises, a new fighter and an eShop game isn't going to cut it.
They also need to start building up hype for E3.
We all know a new Zelda is in the works, so why didn't they have a teaser video at the end of the direct?
It didn't need gameplay, footage or even a title.
Could of just had music, pan over a HD link (perhaps in some artistic way), slogan and then The Legend of Zelda logo appears along with "Stay tuned for this year's E3". THAT would get people excited.
@Falkor If you're happy with wii u's current state,and the lack of effort put into virtual console it must be easy to please you.
@JaxonH think it was Reggie who admitted that it is impossible to please the fans as they essentially say "thanks for the info but I want more"
@Ron1212 May 30th
@TruenoGT Jumped right into multi without knowing the controls, i helped sink someone before i was downed though lol. We won .
The music in the DKC:TF trailer made it for me! How freaking good was that?!!! Getting DKC2 soundtrack vibes here!! Ah I need more coffee
@Pichubby - I meant a link to the X trailer at the top of this page w/ the other trailers, I did sort of see it in Ustream. Sort of. Sorry for the confusion.
@Falkor Nobody asked for GBA on Wii U I don't think. (Especially not for e.g Yoshi's Island where the SNES version is far superior).
@JaxonH - MK8 July 18. You heard it here first. Iwata will be apologizing for the delay in the next Direct in early April. (you need to find a new Gamestop source)
Well about what we expected so can't complain. Really low expectations help.
@Funny_Moblin
Or, I could have just been completely wrong... who knows.
@@Sparx
I mean, I could totally understand a person not jumping for joy over this Direct, but by no means was it a disappointment. Nintendo consoles have traditionally had thinner release schedules than 3rd party consoles, and with Wii U having a bit of a rough time in the market, it's all the more thin.
BUT, and here's the thing, the releases that do come are all money. Top-shelf stuff. Muah. I'm ok with that, ya know? I'm in this hobby to enjoy myself. If I EVER get to a point that the hobby that's supposed to serve as entertainment begins to anger me, and upset me, I'll quit gaming. Simple as that.
Good thing i didn't come in with high hopes. Anyone i thought this direct looked great! Sure there wasn't a new game announced for the U but it looked great
@Ron1212 You can't expect Nintendo to reveal a suprise every time. if your in that mind set every direct, your gonna have a bad time
@rjejr
Haha, indeed, I'll mark my calendar now just in case
And you're right. That GS guy was way off with his info. He DID say it was coming out on a Friday though, which it is. But I'm beginning to think he was trying to convince me to pre order Mario Kart 8 alongside my copy of DKC, by convincing me it was coming out sooner. I told him I always buy online and don't usually buy in-store, and was just purchasing a 2nd copy of DKC day one because I don't want to wait for it to come in the mail. Hmmm, well I know not to listen to him anymore.
And you did call it btw. You said end of May. You were right on the money.
Some people are so easily pleased. If more people were so easily pleased Nintendo would have sold a billion Wii Us by now.
Seriously though, although the ND was pretty much as I expected I am not pleased with the three month gap between DKC:TF and the next title.
Reggie, you promised that there would be no droughts in 2014. I believed you. OK, I didn't.
If a console needs rapid games to sell it, it is the wii u.
How many wii u games will we get the first six months of 2014 in the game shops??
@Mewtwo21 The direct's purpose is to reveal new things, so I'm supposed to expect surprises.
That Tropical Freeze trailer was epic. Loved the music!
For me Steam this week has had more I am bothered for :
Metal Slug 3 - Online multiplayer (I have it on the Wii VC but have to mess around swapping cables and forcing it into 60fps which is annoying)
Ikaruga - (I do have it on the Gamecube but I only like a short game so it is significant messing around).
Double Dragon Neon - Never played it up to now and I really like it.
Pacman Championship Edition DX+ - 50% discount (I wanted on the 3DS before it was axed).
A demo of Lords of Shadow 2 which I didn't really like but it worked well.
(Any of the above I would have got on the 3DS if I could.)
That is just one week.
Retro City Rampage I will probably like more on the 3DS / Gunlord if it is ever released.
@SuperSNESLiam I feel like your over exaggerating....
I really liked what they had. Yoshi's New Island is looking new now, and X looks like a great rpg. Little Mac is god now, and Bayo 2 seems pretty interesting. Everything else was pretty good too, Im just too lazy to list it . I cant wait to see whats in store for Nintendo, especially at E3.
Nothing new announced here so what's the point of even having the Direct? That said, it's what I expected and that's not necessarily a good thing. Thanks, Nintendo.
Awesome Direct! Oh man can't wait till May!
This Direct just made me really happy. After all the negative press that Nintendo has gotten over the last number of weeks this is exactly what the company needed.
I'm getting hyped for Donkey Kong. )))))))))))))
I'm fed up with Nintendo currently we have two games confirmed for release this year. Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze then a 3 month gap for Mario Kart 8. Only three other games where mentioned again Smash Bros, X & Bayonetta 2 none have release dates just coming soon.
Nothing new has been confirmed Hyrule Warriors which was reveled last time just left out in the cold not even a coming soon. Along with Yarn Yoshi & Shin-Megami Tensei vs Fire Emblem both nothing said.
So where does this leave the Wii U just a whole load of coming soon 2014 / 2015 will we ever get a real virtual console or just one a week if where lucky will Gamecube games be released on Wii U will Metroid or Star Fox or Zelda ever come to Wii U still left with loads of questions & no answers very disappointed
@turnmebackwards
If X, B2, Mariokart 8, shovel knight, and smash bros doesn't get you pumped you need to drink some coffee and re-watch.
@rumple88
Only pumped for Donkey Kong & Mario Kart. I just wish Nintendo would give us Wii U owners a clear outline of what to expect.
Are they really going to wait until E3 to show us anything new for the Wii U?
They're either completely ignorant of their current situation or are planning to pull the plug after these games arrive.
The Wii U is doomed. They needed to knock it out of the park no pun intended and wow us with Wii U news but instead we got scraps. X looks great, but how about when it's coming out? Bayonetta 2? Great. We already know! Mario Kart 8, Smash Brothers...ditto.
This Direct has proven beyond a shadow of the doubt that they are much further behind and out of sync when it comes to the Wii U than even our worst fears. They needed to launch with Mario 3D World and this past Christmas Kart should have been out with Smash for this summer. They are 6-12 months behind schedule. They had an opportunity the first half of this year to really bring it when the other two consoles were light on games. They have failed. They are screwed. I have been a huge supporter, even an apologist at times, but no more. The Wii U will not survive through 2016. I seriously don't think you will see a Metroid, Star Fox, or Mario Galaxy. I think they will stop at Zelda U as their big game of 2015 and announce a new console for 2016.
Folks, with so much riding on today's Direct, the fact that they didn't announce any new 1st party games..not even a hint. .shows they just don't have anything remotely close to production. This is a disaster. I am going to hurry and try to beat my library of Wii U games and sell this thingamigaroowhee. I have a 3DS that I could be playing more that continues to get major support. The Wii U is an afterthought. Iwata needs to be fired
Watch the profanity -Lz
@Peach64 Bingo. I'm a Nintendo fan, not a Nintendrone. The Wii U games look great. They have looked great for months because we've known about all of them for as long with the exception of NES Remix 2.
Nintendo has all but waved the white flag on Wii U.
@JimLad Agreed, and seconded.
So pretty much a reality confirmation that software drought for wii u will continue between tropical freeze and Mario kart.
X is unknown, and Bayoneta is summer in Japan means will be holiday season in West. So...
... Well last chance is up, prepare your nightmare is coming to Japan, wii u.
... N 3DS only get eshop in spring. Oh come on, my 3ds will drought after brave default
@JaxonH Keep making excuses, man.
The direct showed some good trailers, but these are all games we have heard about and seen most of already. I was just hoping some of those games would be released much sooner. Essentially, after DK, there's gonna be a terrible drought until late May when MK releases. That's just horrible. I don't understand why Nintendo does this. Even including Kirby or something in March would have been good, but it's pretty much released two weeks before MK. Man...I guess I'm gonna have to buy some old DS games I missed, because Nintendo will not be providing anything for three months.
@jrob23 I agree with some of what you said but letting go of iwata seems a bit extreme at this point.The man has done much for Nintendo and the industry.I agree that more first party software should have been ready a few months after launch.Just like the 3ds launch this lack of software hurt sales.I will say x1 and ps4 have the same issue,so that's why I've yet to pick one up.Being this far into the wii u's life and with only dk and Mario kart for the next three months is not a good thing ,but what do you expect when third party support is nearly dried up on the platform.It would be easier to deal with if we had more virtual console games and titles people actually wanted to play to fill in the gaps but it is what it is.Many fans such as yourself are annoyed to say the least hell,I fit into that catagory as well.My point is give iwata more time it's still to early to say game over.Nintendo has always gave me games no one else can,and I'll stick by them until the end.If Mario kart eight doesn't push a significant amount consoles then I would begin to worry.Worst case scenario Nintendo could produce a new console,and If that happens lets just hope they learn from past mistakes.
@gatorboi352
Excuses for what, exactly? I don't need to make excuses. I'm a happy gamer, simple as that. I like Nintendo. I like the Wii U. I like the games for it. And I like the games coming out for it. There's no excuses needed.
You wanna spend your entire life angry and upset about video games, by all means, I have no problem with that. But don't get mad when you see others actually having fun and enjoying themselves. I have so many games I can't even play them all. Probably a good 20 Wii U games I've barely even started playing. Another 10+ 3DS games as well. And a PS4 and Vita on top of that, granted there's not much out for either I haven't played and want to play, but still. They'll contribute to my ever-growing list of fun games as the year progresses.
Like I said, I'm just a guy who finds enjoyment in playing video games, and I'm particularly fond of Nintendo, their consoles, and their games. I have no beef. I've been gaming Nintendo longer than some members here have been alive. I know exactly what I can expect in the LONG term. And therein lies the issue, I believe. Too many people are short sighted. I look back upon the Wii, on the Gamecube, on the N64... Not once has Nintendo ever given me anything less than a stellar selection of games when everything is said and done. And thus far, I'm very pleased with the quality of games on Wii U. MUCH improved from last gen imo. I have no excuses, because I have nothing that needs excusing.
If you're upset with the quantity of games known about at present, that's perfectly fine. Everyone is entitled to how they feel. But that doesn't mean everyone feels the same way. I know Nintendo consoles don't get near as many games as frequently as other consoles, but they do get about the same number of top-shelf games. I can pick any given past console, and I think I have around 30 or 40 games for it. Whether that be Gamecube, PS2, Wii, etc... And since those are the only ones I'm buying anyways, it's a total non-issue for me. Sure, after DKC I won't be buying another Wii U game til May. But it's the same story for my PS4. I bought Tomb Raider, and the next game I actually WANT isn't coming out til October (Witcher 3), though I am picking up Infamous just so I have SOMETHING to play on the console during my first year with it. So... yeah. It's about even ground for all consoles, of which I own 4.
Is Wii U doomed financially? Maybe. But so what. Can we move on from that now that that's been established and just focus on enjoying games? Being doomed financially doesn't stop the well-oiled Nintendo machine from pressing out new releases for those who own the console. Speaking of which, a VERY good release is coming in just one week. Let's talk about that. That's a worthy discussion. In fact, that game will be worthy to be discussed for years to come imo...
@Ron1212
Yes, they gave the NA release date at least: May 30.
@JimLad I don't think announcing something new and ground breaking during a presentation that only current Nintendo fans watch would get the job done either.
Also, unless all heck were to break lose (which believe it or not, hasn't happened yet), there's no way they would pull the plug on the system so early. We will just have to wait and see how E3 goes...
@minotaurgamer
I was just skimming the comments for this page real quick and I just have to say, "No one asked for Inazuma Eleven?" REALLY? I am in the NA and the ONLY way I have EVER played any of the games was by IMPORTING the EU version. I am FINALLY getting something that I found out about in 2008. I really doubt that the NA getting something after so long is the result of "No one asking for it".
@LordGeovanni
Personally, I think saying "we didn't ask for these games" is a very ignorant statement anyways. Nintendo isn't waiting tables here. And it's a well documented fact that just because fans ask for something, doesn't mean it's going to sell to the masses. Not to mention the fact that almost every favorite game of mine, was a game I WASN'T asking for. Did anyone actually ask for Zelda The Windwaker? Or Metroid Prime? Or Luigi's Mansion? Or Pikmin? No. Yet all of those games are now recognized as greats.
It's Nintendo's job to make fun games, whether people ask for them or not. And if they do a good job, people WILL be asking for more of those games. It's just a really entitled, and irrational, mindset.
@JaxonH True,some things I never asked for like the revival of donkey kong country was welcome and I never saw it coming.The other side of the coin is how "and I know I'm beating a dead horse here" Nintendo is completely ignoring what people want on the vc service.I think when the majority of nl polls keep showing that 60% or more people vote nothing for me this week over and over it's time to listen a little.
@Superryanworld
Agreed. I think the difference is those are re-releases of decade old games particularly of interest to the fans. Yes, there must be a balance. I just think when it comes to new games, no one has a right to judge, especially without playing it. It might turn out the game was exactly what they were asking for and they didn't even know it.
I disapprove of how slowly the good VC games are coming, but again, it's nothing I get upset over. I enjoy what does come out. I count each and every game released that I'm interested in as a blessing. If I start judging by what I want, I'll never be satisfied. Cause I want A LOT of stuff. DKC trilogy on 3DS/Wii U VC, new F-Zero, new Starfox, new Metroid, new Sin & Punishment, etc... But I don't allow my satisfaction to be hampered by what I DON'T get. I'm too busy having fun with the games I DO get. That make sense? Like, "you can choose to be happy about anything, and you'll always be satisfied, or you can choose to be unhappy about everything, and you'll never be satisfied".
In the immediate I'm looking most forward to picking up Weapon Shop de Omasse. I also might pick up some of the other Guild releases as they're all on sale for three bucks right now, and I have only previously purchased Crimson Shroud and Liberation Maiden.
Downloaded the free Sub Wars game, can't complain about free. If it sucks I'll delete it, simple. I didn't expect it so it's not a loss to get nothing for nothing.
Otherwise nothing really had my attention. Smash Bros and MH4U are a while off so nothing to get jumpy about. Might look into Inazuma Eleven when it's discounted. Not disappointed or excited about the Direct though, it was what they announced it as.
@Nik-Davies
Whaaaaaaat???!!! "Who cares about the Koopalings"? Take it back, take it back!
Seriously though, roster additions are ALWAYS welcome. And considering this is "Mario" Kart, I think they're a perfect fit. I mean, when's the last time you raced as Lenny or Iggy in a Mario Kart game? I'd much rather race as one of these little trouble makers than some unrelated character. Idk, that's just me. I'm visualizing now: Iggy wins 150cc Grand Prix Cup! Yeah, that's got a ring to it!
@JaxonH Yeah, I agree with you.Considering I have other systems this is nothing to get bent out of shape over.
@TruenoGT Yeah I kept doing that too. Finally just had to go do something else waiting for it to surface on the eshop! Pun intended.
The best part for me was definitely the reveal of the Koopalings in Mario Kart 8; I think they fit perfectly with the game. Aside from that, Steel Diver: Sub Wars has my eye; finally, an FPS that looks like its about strategy and not just about going "Yay! I have guns! I can shoot people!" I'm also quite curious about Rusty's Real Deal Baseball; I think it has a lot of potential, though I shouldn't set my expectations too high since it is Nintendo's first real attempt at a free-to-play game.
And of course, Little Mac was a nice reveal; I'm liking what I've seen of him so far.
@JaxonH I agree with you. Besides, who else from the Mushroom Kingdom would be a better fit...?
@JaxonH
For the VC, the biggest let-down for me is the fact that they are not on my 3DS. Would I buy a lot of them? Well... just the ones that I am interested in. BUT, I haven't bought all that many because I know they are not available "on the go". I still do not have any VCs for the Wii/Wii U except the Mario RPG. And that was a Club Nintendo reward.
And I still cry a little inside when I hear things like Earthbound (which I am still thinking about getting), Zelda Lttp (Why is it not on 3DS?), and Megaman X being released and still having no 3DS counterpart.
(Not to mention that they should have an option to cross-platform VCs between Wii U and 3DS, even if there was a smaller cost than the full price. I would buy the games much faster if I knew that I could get them at half price if they ever make a portable version.)
Just to compare,I have a LOT of 3DS VC games: Zelda 1, Zelda 2, Zelda Awakening, Zelda Seasons, Zelda Ages, Kirby Block Ball, Kid Icarus (Myths), Megaman (GB), Megaman 2, Megaman 3, Megaman 4, Sword of Hope II, Dragon Crystal, Quarth, Super Mario Land 2, Mario's Picross, and Super Mario Land. I also plan to get many more... if they come out!
I was all excited when I heard about DS games for the VC... Until I heard that it was Wii U VC.
Same with the GBA games for Wii U VC. WHY NINTENDO? WHY? Is my money not enough?
@JaxonH "Being doomed financially doesn't stop the well-oiled Nintendo machine from pressing out new releases for those who own the console."
Well oiled? Ha. Hardly. There are 2 full retail games coming out from Nintendo between now and (essentially) June. That is flat out inexcusable. It's almost as if Nintendo has conceded to the notion that their consoles are to be supplemented with either a PlayStation or Xbox to enjoy a complete gaming experience. Where are the sports titles? Where are the 'mature' games? Even the few mature rated games Nintendo does get, they bury them and damn near deny their existence. Call of Duty Ghosts doesn't even have an avatar in the eShop for example. It's just a blank gray square next to the title. How is that possible? Why is it so hard for Nintendo to offer up the 'all in one' console experience?
Thisis a direct not E3 stop the crying
@Superryanworld "Considering I have other systems this is nothing to get bent out of shape over."
Uh, that's one HUGE consideration. Many of us do not.
This piece from Emily Rogers basically sums up exactly how I feel about Nintendo's current state. And no, I don't mean they need to get Eminem backing them. Read the whole article, you will not be able to argue anything against what it says about Nintendo, especially in regards to the Wii U:
http://www.dromble.com/2014/01/27/nintendo-should-hire-eminem-for-wii-u-ad-campaign/
Afew snippets for you lazy tl;dr folks out there:
"Nintendo’s current marketing is boring, uninspired, and doesn’t create any actual discussion about the product. The marketing for Wii U is too conventional for a product that is very unconventional."
"One of Nintendo’s key problems is they struggle to communicate Wii U’s value to the 16-27 year old male demographic. The “Wii brand” has been stereotyped as a brand for soccer moms, grandmas, and children. Unfortunately, this stereotype transcends beyond just the “Wii” brand, and it’s now become a widespread perception of how the entire company is viewed."
"The squeaky clean, family-friendly image hasn’t done much in improving Wii U’s sales with mothers and children. It has even driven away third party publishers like Take Two Interactive, Electronic Arts, Deep Silver, and Bethesda who don’t believe their violent games can sell to a Nintendo audience."
The Direct was disappointing, but by no means bad. I was hoping Nintendo would announce something new and exciting for Wii U, they really need to at this point. After all of the negative press they've been getting, isn't it about time they prove their claim that they're aiming to make games that take better advantage of the Gamepad?
On the plus side, though, we did get some interesting tidbits for already announced games, such as playable Little Mac for Smash, playable Koopalings for Mario Kart, and some neat new powerups for Yoshi's New Island.
@gatorboi352 I've had the other three last gen systems so long I wasn't thinking about the post,so my bad.Believe me after windwaker and supermario 3d world the u has been getting less use,and I want more games just like everone else on here.
Asleep at the wheel....
Is that it? So basically DK and Mario Kart for the first half of the year for Wii U. Water please! At least Shantae is coming out soon.
@DiSTANToblivion
If only there was a +1 button for your post...
@gatorboi352
Actually, Nintendo is one of THE leading publishers when it comes to content. Sure, you can cherry pick any 3 month period as evidence to your argument, but again, that's short term thinking. We got over 10 major retail releases by Nintendo on Wii U last year, even after a lengthy post launch drought. In fact, I think NintendoLife reported Nintendo averages 15 games per console per year, which is just as many if not more, than juggernauts like EA and Ubisoft. Rest assured we'll see more releases this year than last. And if only Wii Fit U, DKC and Mario Kart are released by May, that just means we'll have another slam packed 2nd half of year. I'm cool with that. It all averages out in the end.
The dry spells are a result of many 3rd parties backing off. You can't really blame Nintendo because they're cranking out games in overdrive. I mean, they're supporting 2 consoles simultaneously, and almost exclusively, themselves. They make a ton of games in a world where development is ever-increasingly difficult (Wii U games undoubtedly take much longer than Wii games, for example), but they're not Wonder-Developer. They can't just snap their fingers, wave a wand, or anything else of that nature and presto, games appear. Each and every release takes years, years of development and hard work. You can blame Nintendo for their crap marketing, you can blame them for their uninspired reputation they've allowed to spiral out of control, but you can't blame them for the actions of 3rd parties any more than someone could blame you for the actions of others. And on the subject of 3rd parties, I HALF WAY see their side of things. I mean, you can't profit off 100-200 thousand copies sold. On the other side, you can't sabotoge Wii U versions and rightfully compain about the outcome.
As for all the sports games, mature games, etc. You ask where they are at? You know the answer to that question just as well as I do. And that's a question you should probably post on EA and other 3rd party's websites. But your statement about Nintendo "hiding" mature games is not exactly accurate. They've been flaunting Bayonetta 2 like it was their own game. Heck, it kind of IS their own game. They're paying for it. They also just showed new footage for X, which is by all intents and purposes a mature game. You point out CoD Ghosts' icon in the eShop, but fail to mention the half page banners they had for the game when it launched, as well as Assassin's Creed, Splinter Cell, Batman Arkham and Deus Ex. Now, do they advertise them on TV? Not as of yet, but they also haven't had one to advertise- they've all been multiplats. We'll see when Bayo2 and X release what they do for marketing.
Now, moving on to where I do agree with you. Your post about Nintendo's marketing, yes, right on. The marketing has been a joke, and it's hurting them. They've lost their old reputation, and should be working at rebuilding the brand. Making their consoles look "cool and fun". Show off their core games (the ones WE play). You know you're doing something wrong when you make Super Mario 3D World look like family tea time multiplayer in the commercials. It's a great single player game, yet they keep trying to pawn it off as some family gathering party game, which it is not.
Everything you said in that above post about the marketing and demographics was spot on. With that being said, I don't think it's worth getting flustered over. At least I know the console is fun and the games are great. Nintendo may completely fumble when it comes to convincing the rest of the world, but hey, as long as I'm in on the secret it's really of no concern to me. Do I wish they'd wise up and learn how to market in the west? Of course. Is it going to affect me personally as I continue my course as a gamer? Not at all.
Honestly I found that the last Nintendo Direct in December was better than this one.
