I've been playing Tomb Raider for the Gameboy Color the last couple of days and I can honestly say that any character that has a game made that doesn't even include music in the levels is not worthy of winning this poll.
Can you even imagine a Mario or Sonic game releasing and you play entire levels in silence?
Super Mario Land on the Gameboy sometimes gets a bad rep, but even that had a decent soundtrack!
@kedireturns nope. I was there mate and the PS2 was cheap compared to DVD players from any reputable makes. The fact it was Sony was a huge factor.
Also, they were given away left, right and centre. You got them for free with wide-screen TVs - which by the way MOST people were upgrading to from their old square box at the time.
They also gave them away with mobile phone contracts.
Ok it may not amount to millions, but it paints the picture very clearly. PS2 shifted plenty of units at dirt cheap rates - and there are plenty of people that used it just for DVDs.
How many millions of PS2's were given away with TV purchases? I remember seeing loads of deals in Comet and the like in the mid-2000s.
It would be more accurate to look at the value of the console sales. I suspect Switch is already the best selling console in total revenue.
It is also certainly number 1 in terms of dedicated games console too. You can't even watch YouTube on it... let alone use it as a secondary screen. Meanwhile the PS2 was absolutely used as a dedicated DVD player by people as it was a very good DVD player in the day for a very low price. It also, genuinely, looked pretty nice under your TV compared to the boring boxy DVD players of the time - which cost more too!
@HalBailman We all have choices to make with our money, but anyone that owns GBA games from 20 years ago is likely to be able to choose to buy an Analogue Pocket if they really want to play those games. It's the cost of 4 Switch games.
Clearly you prioritise other things, and that's fine. I do not see how that's Nintendo's problem though... it's your choice. And a fair choice at that.
I highly recommend the Analogue Pocket though. It is far better than I imagined.
@Speedo Funny because it's true. I don't think there's anything more tedious within gaming right now than people moaning about not having enough to play when the reality, and we all know it, is that they are sat on dozens of unplayed games.
It's pretty messed up when you think about it. How many unplayed games do you think people had in the SNES era?!
@Mr_Monochrome Yep, and I'm sorry to say that it doesn't change in later Worlds...
In fact, there is a heck of lot of inconsistency in the later Worlds. Its worth playing and completing... but it just doesn't hit those highs we've come to expect.
I find all the praise very strange too. I did for Odyssey too... I could say something patronising like people clearly haven't played the older Mario games(!) but actually I think it's just changing tastes.
My thoughts are largely irrelevant as this is one I'm letting the kids play through from the get go...
...but, its a really unremarkable game. It doesn't look good - its not ugly it's just not very detailed or well presented. It looks bland. The gameplay is really unimaginative - tapping as fast as you can to mix cakes... which incidentally young players really struggle to do! The lack of character voice-overs is really out dated at this point. Nintendo is like a stubborn grandparent with their lack of voice work. You just did a film... is it really that tough to bring people in for a game? It's actually very wide of the mark since a lot of kids won't be able to read all that text too.
Maybe Nintendo are finally showing us a game that's come from Home Console and Handheld development being blended? This is clearly from the DS team. And I'm being generous!!
But hey! What do I know?!
From a Princess Peach point of view... the movie felt like a huge step forward for her as a character. This game is like we've gone back a decade. Missed opportunity from Nintendo to build on the success of the movie.
Amazon has become the wild west in the UK. Is it the same in the US? Particularly on electricals, they have so much dodgy stuff for sale.
If you report the listing, they do nothing. Everything from wrong products listed, no safety tests, importing fake comments. It's a real mess.
I've stopped using Amazon out of principle. I think they got too big and now literally do not care. They are often not the cheapest too... which they nearly always used to be.
The only way I'd want a sequel is if they do what they should have done in the first place... and that's have loads of regular Mario levels that then get a Wonder level every so often.
I'd want a lot more content. The original game is way too short.
I'd want some genuine challenge. It has no challenge at all... Consider this. They added additional characters that make a ridiculously easy game even easier. Why didn't anybody at Nintendo think... you know what? Why don't we make one or tw of these characters make the game more difficult? It's like they don't play their own games!
It has too much Wonder nonsense - I like all the Wonder levels... I just don't like them all in a row. Endlessly. It needed regular Mario levels. Loads of them. This would ground the game, make the Wonders more effective and it would pad it out too.
Since Nintendo won't do any of the above... I'd have to say no to a sequel.
I keep seeing game preservation thrown around as an excuse for these illegal dealings.
Nintendo are not saying YOU or I cannot preserve our gaming memories. They are saying that people cannot do it for the masses and profit from it. And profit DOES include donations.
If you're concerned about preserving games... fill your boots and do it. By yourself. For yourself.
Downloading someone else's work, which in itself is copying other people's work, to play games you never once owned, and donating a few quid as some sort of justification because Nintendo aren't releasing their own games fast enough on their own service... you are preserving nothing and fooling nobody. You are consuming. And you're consuming illegally.
And that's before we even consider the sheer and utter pointlessness of it all since most people that use these emulators and collate all these games spend next to no time actually playing them! We all have our backlogs, but adding thousands of retro games onto it is madness!
It's fruit with a face on it... buying this over the 1000s upon 1000s of cheaper alternatives is really silly if you ask me!
I'm actually amazed the deal was struck. Presumably they figured some silly people will pay full whack and then they can bargain bin the rest safe in the knowledge that people do just buy fruit with a face on it!! I.e. the game is entirely irrelevant.
@Aryanb1 yea, maybe I was a bit negative. I still don't think it's a good trailer though... and I don't think they should feel the need to show something just because it's Pokemon day.
Honestly, I have no idea why Nintendo themselves aren't still developing software for older platforms.
1. Gaming hasn't been around all that long... this period now is the first time there has been an opportunity to engage older audiences with a history and knowledge of gaming.
2. Everyone moans about the cost of making software these days. Make some cheaper games.
3. There are so many fantastic opportunities! Mario 64 deserves a sequel - so make one. Charge £20 for it and watch it turn a huge profit versus your expenditure.
New games do not have to be high performance graphics and huge budget blockbusters. There's loads of people with money to spend on NEW older games.
Nope. I showed my kids and they had no interest either. I think LEGO messed up the balance between it looking good and being fun. These severely lack fun - both in the build and the play.
I bought both day one. I played Sonic for a while at launch, but I got a bit bored and haven't gone back since. I saved Mario for Christmas, 100% completed it over the holiday and haven't gone back since.
I can see why some people would do it the other way around, to save some money on the inevitable discount Sonic would receive at Christmas, but I deliberately chose to support both games.
I think gamers should do whatever they feel comfortable with doing / can afford to do in a difficult economy. However, it's not OK to on the one hand seek out discounts and on the other hand be surprised when developers are struggling.
Not saying this is anyone on here... but there's clearly a culture of people expecting to be able to have anything they want without needing to pay for it.
And then we all wonder why the industry is suffering such large staff lay offs? Anyone defending the emulation of current hardware and new software is damaging the industry.
I don't mean to be negative... but that Legends trailer was absolute rubbish. Its February 2024 and you're releasing in 2025. Wait until you have something to actually show us?
Well done, you can draw. I don't think anyone doubts your ability to draw. Now if only you could create a compelling open-world Pokemon game... When can you show us that? 2025? I don't believe you.
Microsoft and Nintendo managed to get GoldenEye onto the Switch.
People should show a bit more gratitude and quit their moaning.
It's constant... "I want all the games now" when our shared reality is a huge stack of backlogged games we never play.
It's the same with the TP/WW argument. We just got TotK - we now have a minimum of 5 years before a new 3D Zelda is even going to be revealed. Why would anyone want TP/WW as a double pack now?! Save them for the long 5 year wait we've just embarked on!
Diddy Kong Racing? Save it for when we don't have 96 Mario Kart courses to play?
Perfect Dark? Go finish GoldenEye on 00 Agent. We all know you haven't managed it yet!
I get where he's coming from with his comment "Talk to Nintendo about that" but he's also missing the point...
...we have been asking Nintendo for years and years and years. He is in a position where someone at Nintendo might actually listen. So of course he should say something?
One thing I'd love to see though is Rare Replay. The contradiction of Microsoft actively seeking partnerships with Nintendo and this game not being available on the Switch is jarring.
Also, I still want GTA V... although saying that, the PlayStation Portal has scratched that itch.
Picking this one up for the kids. They're looking forward to it, and there's a definite "Princess Peach" fandom growing amongst the younger audiences off the back of the Mario movie.
(A shame Nintendo didn't see the opportunity to do the same with Donkey Kong off the back of the movie).
Another Pokemon remake? Surely not. I appreciate why people would want their favourite to be remade, so there's always some demand out there for this, but seriously... they just need to stop.
I swear I'm not trolling here... but I see Switch is in danger of damaging its legacy here. The software, whilst it has some fantastic highs, is really getting diluted by bang average filler now.
And yet, still no Donkey Kong game. Still no new 2D Zelda game. Still nothing at all from Star Fox? Oh, here's yet another Pokemon remake that's entirely uninspiring, plays badly and is full of bugs. Madness!
SEGA need a little less conversation and a bit more action. They keep talking up their games, and then they fall flat.
This feels like desperate times if I'm being completely honest. They're trying to revive old IP and if it doesn't work then who knows?
Nevermind the fact they should have done this... hrmmm... twenty years ago?!
Perhaps they should have stuck with hardware. I'm 99% sure we'd all be enjoying much better Sonic, and wider IP, games from them if they had a console depending on it.
On a serious note... surely new management at SEGA is needed?
This list should have 1, perhaps even 2, more Donkey Kong games on it. Nintendo leaving Donkey Kong out in the cold for TEN years is absolutely the worst thing they've done this generation.
Switch has undoubtedly been a huge success by any measure, software included, but Nintendo's complete and utter mismanagement of Donkey Kong casts a significant shadow over it.
Just thinking about all the characters and enemies in TotK that don't have a model of them yet... and they choose the Sheikah Slate? Did they do any research beforehand? And if so, who asked for this?!
Not being mean... but when you add the consideration that the average person 1. Can't afford multiple models and 2. Won't have room to display loads of models - how does this one reach anywhere near the top of a wantlist?!
I don't think this changes anything to be honest... fiscal year 2025 was always the launch year I had in mind. The great debate as to whether they launch ahead of Christmas or in March will rage on... Switch did OK missing Christmas though?
Regarding Microsoft's claim that consumers are moving away from hardware specific software...
What about Nintendo?
Or do we just ignore that?
Not being funny, but it seems to me that Nintendo are the only publisher that properly looks after their IP.
What benefit has Sonic seen from multiple platforms? How does Star Wars perform as an IP without even a dedicated developer?
I find it alarming that such a significant player in the industry is so unaware of consumer's behaviour. I think they need to go back to the research and focus their attention on the fact we are, for the first time, in a period where a significant volume of parents are knowledgeable on gaming and this is feeding into their kid's gaming habits and choices.
Fact is, you are only going to see a decline in microtransactions and subscription games because we aren't letting our kids play those games. It has nothing to do with the hardware.
Microsoft are making the hilarious mistake of thinking Minecraft shows the normal consumer behaviour. Minecraft is the anomaly, not the norm. Good luck adopting a Minecraft model on a game like Gears or Starfield - it will not work.
I didn't enjoy this game when SEGA did it with Sonic... so unsurprisingly I'm not front of the queue for the version with the bland character design and irritating music!
@MirrorFate2 There's multiple sides to this argument... but on balance I agree with you. The reason I have an issue with the day one patch is because it is quite clearly designed to reduce development time and puts horrendous pressure on the QC effort. Games should be patched and ready to go when they go Gold, and honestly, since that's typically a good 2 months prior to launch, I'd only announce the release date then too. That takes unnecessary pressure off development teams.
"But then the lazy devs will never get a game finished" I hear someone at the back cry! That's what cash incentives are for... devs want that bonus. Especially since many are paid diddly squat without it!!
This is NOT the Donkey Kong game I wanted...! It's a bitter pill to swallow on the TEN year anniversary of Tropical Freeze launching, too.
As if it has been a decade without a new Donkey Kong game. Switch era is undoubtedly a successful one for Nintendo, but it is a shocker that they've not invited DK to join in that success.
@MysticX Ordinarily I'd agree with this assessment... but Nintendo have a huge challenge trying to convince people they need a new Mario Kart, Animal Crossing or Smash Bros games after the series highs they've achieved on Switch.
A new 3D Mario at launch feels plausible. But if it's literally Odyssey 2, I'm not sure I'll feel the urgency!
Slightly bigger screen and slightly more powerful hardware... I'm just not that excited about it.
Nintendo will need some killer software lined up if they're going to be able to convert people to the new system. We're probably due a new 3D Mario I think it's fair to say, and of course there's the Metroid Prime 4 cross-gen possibility.
Is that enough to convince people to part with £300+ though? Surely, in true Nintendo fashion, there needs to be more to the hardware? Not necessarily a gimmick... but something that makes a Switch owner NEED to upgrade.

Christmas 2024.
Analogue 3D.
Star Wars Rogue Squadron.
Good times!

Re: Super Mario Bros. Wonder Devs Show Off "Unused Wonder Effects" At GDC 2024
It's a shame they cut ideas from making the game as the end product wasn't exactly overflowing with content.
I still believe the game would have been best if they had normal Mario levels throughout and then used these Wonder levels sparingly inbetween.
Oh well! Nice they did something fresh.

Re: First 4 Figures Unveil Zelda: Breath Of The Wild Sheikah Slate Statue, Pre-Orders Open Soon
Re: Rumour: Switch Successor Might Not Be Launching Until 2025
I don't think this changes anything to be honest... fiscal year 2025 was always the launch year I had in mind. The great debate as to whether they launch ahead of Christmas or in March will rage on... Switch did OK missing Christmas though?
Re: Xbox Game Pass Really Isn't Coming To Nintendo Switch
Re: New Sonic-Style Kickstarter Project 'Rollin' Rascal' Hits Switch Goal
I didn't enjoy this game when SEGA did it with Sonic... so unsurprisingly I'm not front of the queue for the version with the bland character design and irritating music!
Re: Mario vs. Donkey Kong Launch Week Update Now Live, Here's What's Included
Re: Mario vs. Donkey Kong Launch Week Update Now Live, Here's What's Included
Does the patch for the demo turn it into the full game? That's the only way I'm getting this one. 😉
Re: Review: Mario vs. Donkey Kong (Switch) - An Easygoing, Kid-Friendly Remake That's Just Fine
Re: More Switch 2 Rumours Surface In New "Exclusive" From Reuters
@MysticX Ordinarily I'd agree with this assessment... but Nintendo have a huge challenge trying to convince people they need a new Mario Kart, Animal Crossing or Smash Bros games after the series highs they've achieved on Switch.
A new 3D Mario at launch feels plausible. But if it's literally Odyssey 2, I'm not sure I'll feel the urgency!
Re: More Switch 2 Rumours Surface In New "Exclusive" From Reuters
Slightly bigger screen and slightly more powerful hardware... I'm just not that excited about it.
Nintendo will need some killer software lined up if they're going to be able to convert people to the new system. We're probably due a new 3D Mario I think it's fair to say, and of course there's the Metroid Prime 4 cross-gen possibility.
Is that enough to convince people to part with £300+ though? Surely, in true Nintendo fashion, there needs to be more to the hardware? Not necessarily a gimmick... but something that makes a Switch owner NEED to upgrade.
Re: Best Nintendo Remakes Of All Time, Ranked
Hrmm too many variables in play for this list to have any credibility. Need a clearer definition of what's being ranked in the first place...!
