Re: Lucid Pixel Art Horror 'Afterdream' Snaps Up September Release

nocdaes

Looks interesting - will definitely keep an eye on this one.

I hope it's not leaning on other horror franchises too much and is its own thing. Those floating balloons seem wholly unnecessary to me... "no asset flips or cheap tricks" Yea OK. Hopefully not too much "borrowing" either, eh?!

Re: WayForward's Game Boy Color Classic 'Xtreme Sports' Is Out Now On Switch

nocdaes

Looks good! Shame I didn't discover this back in the day.

So, presumably everyone who is "just let me buy the games Nintendo; not subscribe to access them" will be buying this day one then, yes?

The question is... Will a developer make more money selling individually like this, or through an agreement with Nintendo to put it on the NSO app?

Re: Memory Pak: Making Contact With The "Ungoogleable" Game I Couldn't Quite Remember

nocdaes

I've had a few of these in the past few years, all from the Amiga 500. The most recent one I eventually found was Black Lamp. Ridiculously difficult to Google this one based on my memory of it, so I resorted to watching video after video after video of "x number of Amiga games I used to play" etc.

Eventually I found it.

Not even a good game in truth... it was stupidly difficult (Amiga 500 has a fair share of those!), but I remember it having a great sense of adventure and exploration. It also had a great variety of enemies!

Re: Switch Gameplay Of 'EA Sports FC 24' Has Been Shared Online

nocdaes

It really doesn't look great. I picked up FIFA 22 on the cheap for PS5 just to check in with it again as it's been a good 10 years since my last purchase. It was the same game as my last one... it's still to this day a set of complex, and fair enough it's more complex now than before, algorithms.

But its still an algorithm. It means I press a button, and the ball goes to one of a set of pre determined places. It's not actually a full football pitch of endless possibilities. And for that reason, the game just isn't for me. Its boring. Predictable. And I just do not understand why people go mad for it

One day maybe we'll get an actual proper decent football game. EA certainly aren't bothered to make it though.

Re: EA Is Encouraging Families To Set Up Parental Controls This Summer

nocdaes

This is just PR nonsense. The next generation of young gamers will have parents born in the 1980s, which means they are parents that will know a lot more about gaming than all previous generations.

And guess what? We're the generation of parents that will be raising a middle finger to microtransactions. They can try this PR nonsense all they want... reality is, this business model will die a slow and painful death over the coming decade.

Re: Talking Point: Will You Pay $50 For Red Dead Redemption On Switch?

nocdaes

Why are they releasing this now? This should have been done years ago... when Witcher 3 ported to Switch and everyone went mad for it. That's when this, and Arkham Knight, should have come.

This is too late. I won't buy this out of pure principle. Red Dead Redemption 2 on the new Switch hardware next year I'll buy.

Or are Rockstar going to release that in 2035?

Poor decision and the sales will reflect it.

Re: Talking Point: Would A Third Wave Of Smash Bros. Ultimate DLC Have Been Too Much?

nocdaes

I don't mean to be controversial here... but the game has plenty of characters already. Arguably a few too many in fact.

What I would have liked is less of the Fire Emblem and Xenoblade characters, and more of the first party and strong brand characters.

Everyone is here is correct in the sense of "everyone" hence we're scraping the barrel with another Fire Emblem person joining... but actually, it couldn't be farther from the truth in terms of the long list of "look at who we could have had..."

So no. Absolutely not a third wave. A better and stronger first and second wave was all I wanted.

Re: Review: The Legend Of Zelda: Oracle Of Ages - An Engrossing Tale And True Series Classic

nocdaes

@Truegamer79 Wind Waker and Twilight Princess on Switch is just a matter of time. It made zero sense to release these ahead of TotK - we're now at the start of a... 6 maybe 7 year wait for the next new 3D Zelda? 2024 and 2025 or even 2026 are perfect for these games to take a year each to fill the void!

There have been rumours of a major new remake of Ocarina Of Time for some time now. The story goes... did TotK really take the entire Zelda dev team 6 years? Or did the team split up and work on something else?

Re: Switch Online's 'Missions & Rewards' Adds Pikmin 4 Icons

nocdaes

I hope all the Pikmin fans enjoy the game. It's been a long wait for you, so I'm pleased you finally got what you wanted!

Meanwhile I'm thoroughly looking forward to the next minimum 5 years being entirely free of Pikmin. And I have my fingers crossed another dormant franchise will get its chance.

Re: Disney Speedstorm Teases New Lilo & Stitch Track, Coming This August

nocdaes

Always surprises me when I see Lilo & Stitch! Considering the film is over 20 years old, there's a crazy amount of merchandise that is still sold and you see it everywhere way more than more recent films - like Moana.

I was on a Tui flight a few months ago. Two kids watches you could buy (I didn't) in the duty free. One was Minecraft. One was Lilo & Stitch!

Am I missing something?! Surely a Frozen or Moana watch is going to sell better?

Anyway, it's a nice inclusion for this game. Just a shame the game isn't a nice inclusion on my Switch.

Re: Poll: Which Dormant Nintendo Franchise Would You Most Like To See Return?

nocdaes

Sorry... but the fact Donkey Kong Country is in a Poll about dormant Nintendo franchises during the unbelievably successful Switch hardware era is absolutely one of the worst things in the entire videogame industry right now.

Gloves off for this one. In February 2024 it will be exactly TEN YEARS since Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze was released on the Wii U. Simply porting that game to the Switch is nowhere near good enough.

Donkey Kong is one of the oldest, most respected, and most successful videogame brands ever created. The fact Nintendo have left it to ROT is without a doubt close to the worst thing they have ever done as a company.

Re: Hands On: Pokémon Sleep (Open Beta) - An Absolute Snoozefest

nocdaes

@-wc- RE: people that don't have a smartwatch. It's true! lol

I find it intriguing that the world is obsessed with technology, gadgets and "life improving devices" - yet when it comes to wearing technology, no-one seems game.

If you look at how fast tech has evolved over the past 30 years, it feels like we've stalled.

Installing an App on a phone that then goes under your pillow to measure sleep is a perfect example. It's 2023, not 2009 - when you could do the exact same thing with an App called Sleep Cycle.

So back to the Smartwatch comment... I agree with your point (plenty don't have one) but actually the original point is valid in that... should 't we be doing it via a Watch, or the Pillow(?!) or your pyjamas(!!). Why are we still having sleep Apps on phones nearly 15 years later?

I find it interesting anyway.

Re: Random: Digital Foundry Says Switch 'Last Of Us' Clone Has "No Redeeming Features Whatsoever"

nocdaes

Eurgh the problem is, when you start to really think about preventing this stuff from going on the eShop, you start to realise its just not possible.

I guess the best solution would be if a certain volume of refinds/complaints is hit, then the developer gets banned for a period of time and their games are removed.

The problem with 2 eShops or partitioning content is who gets to decide what goes where? How many good games could suffer because the person that decides didn't like it?

Don't forget... the Chart is a partitioning tactic that already exists. And that is already manipulated through games on sale reaching the top.

My solution would be:

1. Sale price sales do not count towards your chart position.
2. If refunds/complaints hit 10% of sales volume an investigation is launched (at the expense of the developer in question) and decision made on their software.

But guess what...? Still not full proof! How do you stop people reporting a perfectly good game on mass for a laugh/ like how a website can be DDos attacked! Also, how many great games only got discovered after a sale.

It's a nightmare for Nintendo.

Re: Japanese Charts: Zelda: TOTK And Final Fantasy XVI Battle For Supremacy

nocdaes

Might not be a popular opinion... but I'm genuinely enjoying FF16 a lot more than TotK.

The problem with TotK, for me, is that it's just too similar to BotW. That in itself would be fine, but for the fact I already spent 200 hours on BotW. It felt like I was playing the same game again.

Which is an interesting thing because I play other Zeldas multiple times... so why not BotW? I think it's the hours. I have played Link's Awakening and the Remake multiple times - but it still won't be anywhere near 200 hours.

I guess I burned out on this type of Zelda!

Meanwhile... Final Fantasy 16 is my first since 12. And I'm quite happy pretending it went 12 and then 16 and the games inbetween never happened. Hands down the better game for me.

Re: Review: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Booster Course Pass Wave 5 - A Good, But Not Great, Penultimate Lap

nocdaes

@rockodoodle Yes, absolutely agree with your points here. I've often thought the same with the eShop too and how little they invest back into that despite all the money it is making!

My head says Nintendo is just making loads of cash while they can as they know how easily things can fall apart (N64 and then Gamecube after SNES, Wii U after Wii) but my heart says maybe they've got a lot of secret projects for new hardware on the way...

Like... do we really believe the entire Zelda dev team worked on TotK for 6 years? Do we really believe the Mario Kart team haven't been working on something new behind the scenes... as Tour and this DLC doesn't look like a full time job to me!

...and do we honestly all believe that there is no Donkey Kong in development somewhere, as we approach TEN years since the launch of Tropical Freeze on Wii U (Feb 2014).

We will see soon enough. 2024 has always felt like the moment, especially when this MK DLC was given the "releasing by end of 2023" timeline.

Re: Review: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Booster Course Pass Wave 5 - A Good, But Not Great, Penultimate Lap

nocdaes

@SpaceboyScreams my only grievance with the Mario Kart DLC is that it was chosen over another potential game such as Diddy Kong Racing or perhaps even F Zero - who knows. Seems likely Nintendo wouldn't bother with another racer in light of deciding to go with the DLC though.

Of course that's not to say they don't have something lined up for 2024. They likely do.

As for pricing. Fair enough, and it's different for everyone. Me personally, I already have the online so the DLC is free. If I didn't, I'd happily pay £5 for a pair of new Cups. That would put this DLC value at £30. So once again, Nintendo have priced it competitively/ dare I say, cheap, compared to what pretty much any other publisher cough EA would charge you.

Re: Review: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Booster Course Pass Wave 5 - A Good, But Not Great, Penultimate Lap

nocdaes

Wow! Not often I disagree this much with a review on NL!

The music on the Tour courses is by far the worst in the entire game and instantly forgettable.

Moonview Highway on 150 and 200 is one of the best courses in the game. If you played it on 50 or 100, then yes, that's pretty boring.

Vancouver is comfortably the best city track in the whole game so far! Los Angeles is also much better than many previous cities featured.

Squeaky Clean is great - should have perhaps referenced the Mario Bros being plumbers in it a bit more? Seems an obvious miss? Felt a lot like Micro Machines - in a good way. I'd like to see more.

Daisy Cruiser becomes one of the best "short courses" in the game, but much like the Baby Park course it does suffer from the special items not being in the game - especially the moving table room!

Re: Call Of Duty On Switch Is Back On After Microsoft Wins FTC Court Case

nocdaes

Sorry but the FTC are an absolute joke. I wouldnt trust a single word that comes out of their mouths. The CMA however is actually decent and they do a bloody good job. I do not see the CMA changing their minds anytime soon because they are absolutely right in their assessment.

Anyone with any sense can see exactly what Microsoft are trying to do. I'm glad we have the CMA holding them to account.

Re: Sonic Co-Creator Yuji Naka Found Guilty Of Insider Trading

nocdaes

@Bunkerneath Just to be clear... it's not OK to get someone else to do it for you. It's harder to prove you are guilty, but certainly not OK.

Wealthy, privileged people in wealthy and privileged jobs greedily steeling money from other investors. That's exactly what this is.

He should spend time behind bars for this crime. A fine isn't enough.

Re: Talking Point: What Makes A Good Sidequest, Anyway?

nocdaes

A good side quest is one that actually adds some value to the game rather than simply wasting time.

TotK would have benefitted from more meaningful quests. Straight off the top of my head... how about quests that unlocked different modules for the house you can build? You know... instead of them all just being given to you. The whole horse God nonsense could have had a more meaningful quest if the prize was having a stable at your house - for example.

It's not difficult is it? They just don't bother.

It's easy to make a decent side quest. The problem is, it is easier to make a rubbish one. So guess which one the developers go with...

And say what you want... but I'm sorry. Its true. They choose the shortcuts. Every single time. Even the best.

Re: Poll: What's Your Game Of The Year Of 2023 So Far?

nocdaes

@NinjaNicky It's a really strange one. I don't understand how anyone that spent circa 100 hours exploring BotW for Korok seeds can be anything but underwhelmed and bored by TotK's map.

TotK is a better game than BotW in that I would recommend playing TotK over BotW.

The problem is that if you have already played BotW, then I absolutely cannot recommend TotK!

Re: Poll: What's Your Game Of The Year Of 2023 So Far?

nocdaes

It's TotK by default, but my gosh, hands down the most disappointing Zelda I have ever played.

The only saving grace for TotK as far as I am concerned is the fact its a second Zelda game on the console and it didn't require an extra piece of hardware or some gimmicky controller (like Skyward Sword and Majora's Mask).

But as far as Zelda games go... this is way too much like BotW. It's crazy to think they spent this many years on the game... nonsense if you ask me.

Re: Best Nintendo 64 Platformers - Every N64 3D Platformer, Ranked By You

nocdaes

I mean... "Golden era" essentially boils down to 3 decent games, a load of average games, and plenty of... let's be polite. "Experiments".

This was a time when developers fell into 2 camps. Those that could make a 3D platformer. Those that could not - Not just ability, likely time and budget too.

Easy for us to forget now just how new this all was. Imagine you're a developer a d you have to set the budget to make your first 3D platformer - based on all your previous data which is for 2D games. Really no surprise this list has so many unfinished/rushed games attempting to recoup some money.

Funny thing is, they likely made their money back as the N64 library wasn't expansive. New releases, no matter how bad, got a lot of attention and shelf space.

Re: Activision CEO Made 'A Bad Judgement' In Not Supporting The Nintendo Switch More

nocdaes

@kingbk I think we are all being a bit naive here. If we really think about it... we know the truth.

Nintendo has terrible, and I mean truly dreadful, online infrastructure.

COD (and FIFA, and GTA V) make the overwhelming majority of their money from digital currency and microtransactions.

That revenue is fuelled by online.

COD not being on Switch is not short sighted. It is a sign of the times within a very unhealthy videogame industry. They don't think they can make enough money from it.

A profit? Yes it'll make a profit. But it won't make the billions they want.

Re: Activision CEO Made 'A Bad Judgement' In Not Supporting The Nintendo Switch More

nocdaes

He's just spouting utter rubbish here. If what he says is even remotely true, then why is there still no COD on Switch, huh? Its not like the Switch became successful recently, is it?

They've chosen not to support the console because they simply can't be bothered. I don't necessarily blame them for it either. Online is a huge part of COD's appeal, and Nintendo's online infrastructure is amateur at best. Why would anyone want to try and make that work?

Oh, and yes. That's precisely why GTA V remains absent from Switch too.

We can all thank Nintendo for their crappie online as to why we don't have these games on the console.
