Re: Talking Point: Do You Want To See Colourful Cartridges Return For 'Switch 2'?

nocdaes

@jojobar You're right, of course, there's a long list of things we should cut back on to protect the environment. Not putting a piece of paper with a download code in a big plastic box seems like a no brainer.

It's not so much the impact of those particular products... it's more the mindset of those people doing it, and the mindset of those allowing it to continue.

Re: Metroid Prime 4 Development Updates Seemingly Discovered

nocdaes

@RiasGremory I'm pretty sure they're not. Happy to be proved wrong, but honestly, as a huge Metroid fan myself... how can we seriously believe FOUR Prime games in as many years is going to be anything but an utter disaster?

I guess this is why following Nintendo is so much fun...!

Re: Metroid Prime 4 Development Updates Seemingly Discovered

nocdaes

I don't think MP2 and MP3 remasters are coming anytime soon. Nintendo will be well aware that MP4 sales will be eroded by releasing too much Metroid in quick succession.

As a Metroid fan, obviously you want all the games right away.

As a Nintendo fan... not being funny here, but I played MP1 remaster, I loved it, but I came away from it thinking... hrmmm... how are Retro going to get me on board with MP4 because I am not going to be interested in more of the same.

Just look at the sales decline in the MP series between titles to see why Nintendo would do well to keep the Prime powder dry in the run up to MP4.

Besides... when MP4 launches and we're back to day zero on the development of a new 3d Metroid game... is that not the best time I.e. the next 5 or more years development cycle, to release a MP2 remaster?

I see the same argument amongst Zelda fans. They want WW and TP HD now. I'm here scratching my head... we just got TotK, we're approx 6 years from a new 3D Zelda now... doesn't it make sense for TP and WW to land during those 6 years?!

Re: Nintendo Shares Hit Record High, Apparently Thanks To 'Switch 2' Fever

nocdaes

Hang about... this isn't a record share price at all? Your "MAX" view only goes back a few years.

Nintendo Wii and DS era had a significantly higher share price than now, and it makes little sense as to why that's the case when you consider the games industry as a whole has grown enormously since then. I guess Nintendo's share price is held back by the fact their subscription numbers remain modest and they've not, to date, forged any kind of significant business on either mobile or with in-game transactions/digital currency. All things that have driven up the share price of other leading publishers.

Nice to see the share price rising, but again, this is still way lower than it should/could be and nowhere near the record!

Re: Talking Point: What Game Do You Wish You Could Forget?

nocdaes

Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time. Experiencing 3D Mario and Zelda for the very first time remains the greatest experience in gaming. BotW is the only game that has come close to replicating that magic feeling of possibility. Games today suffer from our past experiences - we know the limitations, we understand the algorithms.

I'm still hopeful that we will get a similar experience in the future, perhaps once AI is better executed to create more powerful experiences, or indeed, with further developments in VR to create truly immersive experiences.

Re: More Tomb Raider Trilogy Info Promised 'Soon' As Fans Question Lack Of Gameplay

nocdaes

Fair enough if you are excited for this, but i can't get past the fact that this low level remake essentially pushes back the possibility of a full on high level remake, that Tomb Raider surely deserves, by at least 15-20 years.

Also... where is a new Tomb Raider game? Seriously. Are Tomb Raider and Donkey Kong locked in some kind of staring contest as to who can go the longest without a new game, or what?

Re: Sony CEO Drums Up Hype For Nintendo's Zelda Movie

nocdaes

Sony is the right choice for this movie. They have the knowledge, experience and previous form on the game-to-film front. Not sure why this comes as some big surprise or taboo?!

Besides... the Sony film teams are completely seperate to the game teams. Not that it even matters.

Re: The Easiest Nintendo Switch Games

nocdaes

Kirby and the Forgotten Land definitely ticks the easy box, but only to a certain point. Some of the late bosses are very difficult.

Mario Wonder is by far the easiest Switch game I've played. I loved it but I also hated it at the same time. Three things that make this the easiest game in my opinion: 1. The levels are very short with multiple continue flags 2. There's actually a severe lack of secrets... hardly any levels have multiple exits and hidden areas on the map have practically no reward. 3. But the worst offence of all in terms of challenge... the 3 purple coins can be obtained too easily! You can jump to your death to obtain one and you start your next go with the coin obtained.

Oh and just in case you aren't finding it ridiculously easy... pick a badge to make it even easier for you! Honestly. I can see why this game divided opinions... it has so much greatness and style but it's then let down by being too easy, too short, and it also looks rushed. Captain Toad is a good example of what is wrong with the game ). You found a secret, the secret does nothing more than give you a few coins, and captain toad is just randomly assigned with no role in the game at all. Something is amiss.

Mario Bros U is a far better Mario game overall. Packed full of secrets, bonus levels, secret map routes, not able to carry a second item (makes it a lot more challenging)... its only flaw is just how familiar the locations are. If Mario U was in the Flower Kingdom, we'd have a Mario World beater.

Re: Talking Point: Our 2024 Nintendo Gaming Predictions

nocdaes

A new Donkey Kong game and a 2D Zelda game I reckon.

I'm not expecting a Switch 2 announcement until March 2025 - and that's where I'd expect to see Mario Odyssey 2 and the Ocarina of Time Remake.

Windwaker and Twilight Princess will be a few more years. They'll sit in the void between OOT remake in 2025 and the next all new 3D Zelda which is likely 2028. WW in 2026 and TP in 2027 is fine by me.

Re: 30 Upcoming Nintendo Switch Games To Look Forward To In 2024

nocdaes

I'm planning to spend more time with the PS5 in 2024. FF7 and Star Wars Outlaws are my highlights. Switch needs new hardware, which may or may not come in 2024, but I'm happy just waiting to be honest. I feel like I've had my fill of amazing Switch experiences and really don't need anything in 2024. Roll on the new era I say.

Re: Review: Outer Wilds (Switch) - A Sublime Spacewalk That Stutters Can't Spoil

nocdaes

It commands a lot of your time up front before it starts to deliver enjoyment. Fine if you have a lot of time on your hands, but for anyone that typically finds themselves with small pockets of time to play something, this is a tricky one to recommend.

I feel like it needs an optional tutorial to help make it more inclusive. I'm sticking with it, but I'm not going to lie... these first few hours are quite tedious!

Re: Fortnite's Dev Really Wants A Crossover With Nintendo But Hasn't Had Any Luck

nocdaes

The reason Nintendo don't need to do this is because their IP makes plenty of money on its own but with the added significance of consistency.

Star Wars, Marvel, DC and Spiderman all have perfectly good examples of a high quality and successful videogame but each and everyone of them, including Spiderman, lacks the consistency of commercial success.

Star Wars is probably the biggest disappointment in videogame history, and I still firmly believe that's because Disney just outsource all their games and don't do it themselves.

Re: Random: The Game Awards Urged Eiji Aonuma To 'Wrap Up' Zelda Acceptance Speech

nocdaes

I don't watch the show and I don't support it at all. It's a nonsense. In the UK we need the games industry to invest more in BAFTA so that their gaming awards are higher profile and receive the recognition they truly deserve.

"The Game Awards" is exactly what a gaming awards should not be. It is quite literally everything that is wrong with the industry and I find it embarrassing that the industry not only entertain them but actually turn up too. Absolute joke.

Re: Suika Game Is The Next Free Trial For Nintendo Switch Online Users (Europe)

nocdaes

I don't understand why this game has been chosen by Nintendo or why the developer would want to be included!

The game costs practically nothing to buy, so from Nintendo's perspective it's a pretty poor promotion of a game that is already next to nothing to buy.

It's exactly the kind of game you play relentlessly for a couple of days, and then you stop. So what does the developer hope to achieve here?! More sales? Unlikely I'd argue. People will play it for free and then stop playing it.

Re: Soapbox: Ocarina Of Time's Deku Tree Dungeon Is Still My All-Time Top Gaming Moment

nocdaes

Experiencing OOT for the first time when it launched 25 years ago will not be topped. A lot is written about that leap from 2D to 3D and the obvious impact it had on that day one experience.

However, one contributing factor I don't think gets enough commentary is regarding the limits of play in these new 3D worlds. They had never been experienced before, so the exploration, sense of wonder and trying things out was on a level I personally have only ever experienced once since - intriguingly another Zelda title, BotW.

Jumping into a game today... we know the limits. We know the visual tricks. We know the algorithms. The magic hasn't been repeated.

Re: Random: More Kids Want In-Game Currency Over Physical Media This Holiday

nocdaes

My kids haven't asked for this to date, but I know the day will come. School is full of poor unfortunate souls that think gaming is Fortnite, FIFA and Roblox - so the peer pressure will take ahold at some point. It's inevitable.

I know that war is coming, but I have been building my defences ever since they were born. Roblox and Fortnite can knock at my door, but they won't ever get in!

Meanwhile, my kids will have free rein on any PEGI age appropriate game they want across PS5, Switch and Xbox. If they finish the game, they can get a new one. Anytime. Offline only.

They can invite their friends over anytime. I'll even feed them.

Re: Talking Point: Going Home - Ocarina Of Time's Best Locales

nocdaes

I like all the places in the article but one other place that sticks in my mind is found in Hyrule Field not too far from the castle drawbridge. A hole that you can uncover and fall down!

The calm music, the safe feeling, and... a cow! What more could you possibly need? That's my choice! Haha

Re: Pokémon's COO Wants To Keep Franchise Going For "Hundreds Of Years"

nocdaes

I can definitely see Pikachu lasting that long, but only if they continue to allow it to appear in other games and places.

Pokemon as a whole though... I'm not convinced. I think the Switch era has shown some pretty significant shortcomings for the series, and whilst there is still an enormous fan base - it's difficult to believe there is significant growth.

Re: Talking Point: Does Zelda: Ocarina Of Time Need A Full Remake?

nocdaes

Not sure whether it needs one or not... but we're definitely going to get one.

A remake of OOT is the best way, potentially even the only way, to follow up on BotW/TotK with a return to item/dungeon led format.

I actually suspect it's already done/ near completion and ready to go. 2025 would seem about right to me.

It's very Nintendo if you think about it... "Fans: where's my TP/WW double pack Nintendo?!" "Nintendo: here, have this OOT full Remake".

Re: Fortnite Announces Age Ratings Update, Restricts Cosmetics

nocdaes

Too little, too late. Moan about the age restrictions all you want, the fact is it should have been done already.

Makes no difference in my house anyway.

Absolutely no way my kids are ever playing this game. Epic aren't getting their greasy hands on their pocket money!

All the amazing games and experiences that exist... more than any child could play in an entire childhood if they delve deep into gaming history. Yet they spend all their time (and pocket money) on this rubbish. I feel bad for them, I really do!

Re: Talking Point: Which Zelda Game Should Be Adapted For The Movie?

nocdaes

Definitely none of them!

I love the Zelda series, and whilst there are strong characters, locations and plot points in each and every one of the games, the overarching story is always, always, always full of flaws, poor writing, and in some cases utter nonsense. Some of it will be culture, some translation, but honestly, I suspect a lot of it is down to the powers that be not identifying the difference between coming up with ideas (Zelda devs are fantastic at this) and writing a decent story (they absolutely struggle at this).

It's not unique to Zelda. Making a great videogame and telling a great story are very different skills - and there are very few games in existence that do it well. Final Fantasy also struggles. I love FF7 - again great characters, locations and plot points - but the story? It's an absolute mess! FF16? Picking up the Game Of Thrones vibes in the game... but the story by comparison? Absolutely dire!

So yea. Completely unique story please. Take all the brilliant ideas from the games, and have someone write the amazing story it deserves.

Re: Random: 8 Cancelled Retro Studios Games Detailed, Including 'Portal With Combat'

nocdaes

@Ogbert phone upgrades as in it is exceptionally unlikely an employee at Retro will be using the same mobile phone for ten years straight. Would it even have a functioning battery still?!

I accept ghe creative think Tank argument for Retro. They do contribute in other ways. I'd also agree that Retro's troubles are as much down to Nintendo's poor management. And by that, there are two things that instantly spring to mind...

1. Why didn't Retro get put on MP4 from the beginning?
2. Why haven't Retro worked on another Donkey Kong game. It's been 10 years.

Re: Random: 8 Cancelled Retro Studios Games Detailed, Including 'Portal With Combat'

nocdaes

Retro haven't released anything since Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze on the Wii U way back in February 2014.

Just think... that's 3 months shy of a decade. A decade of staff wages. A decade of new computer and phone upgrades for all your staff. A decade of office costs. A decade of staff expenses. A decade of staff parties.

With zero return.

We'll undoubtedly look back on the Nintendo Switch era as a huge success for Nintendo, but that is no thanks to Retro Studios!

Re: Talking Point: Which Old Track Do You Wish Had Made It Into Mario Kart 8 Deluxe?

nocdaes

I'm definitely disappointed that we didn't see more N64 tracks - felt particularly hard because they front loaded the ones we did get too. That said, I am happy with the N64 tracks they chose.

Toad's Factory, Dino Dino Factory and Airship Fortress are definitely the biggest omissions for me, but I think it's safe for us to make an assumption there is a good chance they will appear in a future Mario Kart game.

The challenge for Nintendo with Mario Kart (and Smash Bros is also in the same boat!) is how they give us a better experience with the next entry in the series. I mean... if Mario Kart 9 has Toad's Factory, that's great and all, but unless it's got another 90 odd tracks with it then it'll ultimately disappoint!
