Re: Knife Fighter Kano Returns To Mortal Kombat 11

If I recall correctly, originally Kano wasn’t mentioned to be Australian, but in the movie it was played by an Australian actor who did such a good job that they kept his nationality as canon. Just a little bit of trivia.

@Alucard83 I 100% disagree. I think Super Mario Run very well captures the feeling of a "normal" Mario game, specially if you go for collecting all the colored coins in all the levels. If you only played the free 1st world (which are really simple and not as much fun), I really suggest trying the full game. Also, Toad Rally is super fun and it's a shame Nintendo didn't add it to NSMBU Deluxe as a perk for subscribing to the Nintendo Online service.

Re: Review: Omega Strike - A Metal Slug-Style Metroidvania That Offers Throwaway Fun

@carlos82 In my opinion, the "vania" in Metroidvania means it's a Metroid-like game that also adds RPG elements like a level system, gear, etc, which is what SotN and later Castlevania games did, although these days people use metroidvania when they just mean Metroid-like.

As for the review itself:

"The problem is, all those well-made bits are lacking that vital spark that elevates the game above the competition."

I don't necessarily see a problem with this. A game can just have a simple mechanic and run with it. Sometimes a game's downfall is when it tries too hard to be unique. Celeste would haven been perfect IMO if it didn't tried to tack on the depression narrative which IMO was out of place, and instead just focused on what made the game fun instead of adding stuff in like the stupid golden feather which was frustrating and unfun. The Messenger tried too hard to justify the need to switch between the two art styles for no real reason other than "hey, it's cool!". And many 8-bit inspired games like Shovel Knight and Bloodstained use the the 8 bit theme more like shackles, where it's nice how they look but the way they play feels dated as if it really was an 8 bit game. But that's of course just one person's opinion.

@Buizel You should watch this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o3GYtAyRCOo. It's from an (awesome) youtube channel dedicated to retro gaming, and this particular video deals with N64 replacement sticks. IIRC they had some reservations on how modern sticks perform on N64 games due to how the games were designed. Definitely worth a watch if you are interested in better N64 sticks.

EDIT: It's now how the games are designed, but how the sticks perform, I just rewatched to make sure.

@AndrewJ The noises were part of the charm in BK, it gave more character to each, well, character. Gruntilda in particular was very memorable, and Banjo had that goofy-ness while Kazooie sounded kind of sarcastic in way, and I think for a game of this type the noises worked far better than for example actual voices would have.

IMO the problem with YL is that the noises they picked, both when speaking as well as during gameplay, were not as charming as they were in BK.

@BlueOcean That's true, I remember 100%-ing Donkey Kong 64 back in its day and had a lot of fun doing it, but when it was released for Wii U, I tried playing it again (having never played it since) but couldn't stand the controls. I wasn't sure whether I had just gotten too old and maybe just bad at games perhaps, so it's good to know I'm not the only one who finds DK64 worse.
