The only thing Other M truly needs is just a Mario Galaxy style nunchuck control scheme. It's the reason I never finished it. Switching from third to first person is incredibly frustrating (specially in boss fights), a major chore that is completely unnecessary and at least for me made the game unplayable.
The art style looks quite good, but this is why I'm glad it's not the fans who make the actual Mario games. The environment art is way too busy where it's hard to tell apart background from foreground, and the mechanics are completely different from what makes Mario games fun to just move around. Cool concept, but I'm not sure I'd want too play this as-is.
But kudos on taking inspiration from the TV show, the 2D Mario games could certainly use some art-style reimagining.
I dislike gacha mechanics as much as everyone, but people calling it "gambling" is ridiculous. It's more like buying randomized Pokemon card packs. except you get free packs just for playing normally. So I'm glad most people are giving it a try instead of complaining and thinking they're taking "a stance" in doing it.
House of the Dead 1???? This is some of the best news of the year for me. That game is my favorite, but it's practically impossible to play these days.
@Roam85 Indeed, I've had the same experience so far. I'd say it's fair enough considering how the mobile market works. But people tend to blow these mechanics way out of proportion.
I just hope whatever their next game is, they focus on making it a great game first before tacking on unnecessary narratives. They clearly have talent, but IMO their approach was misguided with Celeste.
I'm pretty sure every old school fighting game had a way to make the AI cheat you, the trick was finding ways to exploit the AI regardless of its cheats. MK2 in particular had the most fun exploits for me.
They should try the best NES puzzle game no one played, Moai Kun. I loved that game, one of these days I'm going to put it in my NES Classic so I can play it on TV easily.
IMO the only thing reviews are good for is when there are game breaking bugs or performance issues, and I don't recall any first party Nintendo game ever having those.
> controller vibration due to the proximity of foes
They have a patent for this? It sounds like just an everyday game feature. The first one might have some technical merit, but this one is just ridiculous if that's the full extent of the patent and not some specific implementation or system that they invented.
So this is how, say, Pokemon fans feel like when people like me have no idea about any of the games.... Feels bad
In all seriousness that SNK "invitation" segment was one of the coolest fighting game trailers I've ever seen. Brought back a lot of memories. I'd wish his stage was his classic train stage from FF2, but I understand why they're going with the KOF style stage.
I really wish the re-release it, fixing the "inverted" camera controls of the original. It's the reason why I can't play my copy of Sunshine, and I've really tried.
@J-Plap The MK community is very different from the Smash one. Many fans have been complaining about the lack of news regarding the KP, specially when it had been leaked anyway early on. We all just needed dates.
I'm conflicted with Wolfenstein. I want to get it on Xbox because obviously it will look better, but I love motion aiming on Switch, it makes shooters so much more enjoyable for me.
@mr_benn Nice, thanks for the link. I assumed there must be a way to put more games in them, I just hadn't looked it up yet. I may try this now, looks simple Thanks again!
I'm surprised to hear people complained about the voices, they were spot on BK style.
For me the biggest issues were the camera, the way the game artificially inflated levels having you go out and then back in (instead of just letting you explore and find all pages in one go), the extremely repetitive enemies, and the frustratingly annoying and boring end boss, which made me quit the game. Also, they could have toned down a bit the self referential humor.
But there were a lot of things they got quite right. The music on the ice level is god like. That's the one part of the game I'll replay forever.
@AxeltheCorvikni I have the Pacman and Galaga mini arcade ones. The sounds aren't exactly like the arcade versions, but they are really fun to play. And they got my daughters playing and getting good at Pacman, so on that alone they were a success for me.
I don't know if I'd play a long game like Contra on it though, but I'll definitely get one to try it.
@Folkloner Thanks for the extra info. I was excited about this news already, but seeing involvement from the same people that made the wonderful Mickey Mouse Shorts makes the news even better.
With all due respect, the people complaining about the price or that think emulation is a viable alternative to all N64 games clearly don't understand products like this, or the issues that it solves that those cheap adapters cannot.
For me it's still too expensive, I'd rather go with the HDMI mod, if someone in my country would do it.
I didn't subscribe to his channel because he was a little to loud for my taste (as most youtubers are), but I will always remember his "Joycon Boyz!" chant at the NY Nintendo Switch launch event. He certainly knows how to get people hyped.
I sincerely hope he is ok, and if not, then I hope he can find peace.
@Alztru I've been playing it daily since it launched, though not on Switch. If you're an MK fan or a traditional fighting game fan it's definitely worth it. IMO the best game in the series.
I'm glad they Switched to 2D. I liked several things from the first game, but its many issues frustrated me so much I just gave up on it near the end. If it were another 3D game I'd ignore it, but with this DKC-like approach it's definitely in my radar.
God, I love this game. Even just the sounds of hitting the ball with the bat are so satisfying. So glad it finally gets mentioned online, it's almost the very definition of a hidden gem.
I'm not a fan of mods and emulators that claim to "fix" games (in someone's opinion), but this is an amazing idea that actually adds a lot of value. It probably won't happen, but I really wish this either gets added officially, or at least a version of the emulator can be run in the SNES Classic.
The first level look good, but the rest made me realize part of the charm of the GB games is that you kind of "imagined" your own colors, and the colors chosen for the other levels don't match how I imagined them.
@Yorumi Exactly. I do not know at all whether this is true or not, but it feels like this story and many like it, when you try to validate it and follow the sources int turns into "A is reporting that B is reporting that C is reporting that such and such happened, according to D" and so on. And at least in my experience I know there are people who just like to start fires, so it's difficult to know if in the end it's just all due to people like that.
For me it was neither the resolution nor the frame rate that made me sick in BotW VR, it was moving in the world that did it, the discrepancy between what I was seeing and what my brain expected. When I stood still and just looked around it was all ok.
I know the internet will go crazy with the hate, but I personally like it, seems fun. Jim Carrey is just Jim Carrey though, but that's not a bad thing. Those last few seconds certainly intrigued me.
> ridiculous intentional grind to push you to spending money to bypass the grind.
What you call "grind" it's how the MK Krypt has been since Deadlly Alliance way back in the early 2000s. It's meant to give you reasons to play the various modes and keep players engaged. Something that for example Arms could learn a thing or two from.
> why is there 6 different currencies in the game? sounds like mobile game design more than ever
There are different currencies awarded for different modes and doing different things. Again, as a way to entice players to play and try different modes. Only one of those is for sale, the most useless one, Time Krystals.
@SonOfVon > they design the game keeping the mtxs the focal point, it's not something they've just put in there for the hell of it in the last moment. it's manipulative and not consumer friendly.
That's not true at all. That's the misconception that people keep repeating. If they wanted to manipulate people into buying stuff, the store wouldn't be time limited, all items would be available for purchase at any time. The store itself also wouldn't tell you where in the game you can find the exact same item. You CANNOT buy anything that helps you progress in the game, you can ONLY buy skins and cosmetics IF you don't want to, you know, play the game and get them yourself.
This whole issue has been blown completely out of proportion, and it really saddens me to think of how many people will miss out on an amazing game because so many sites and commenters are repeating misinformation about it, at the mere mention of "microtransactions" which are not even in the game in the sense that people are calling it.
