The first official trailer for the upcoming Pokémon Detective Pikachu movie has officially arrived, giving us our very first look at the film in action.
As you can see above, the trailer gives us a good look at how the Pokémon have been adapted to work on the big screen alongside their human counterparts, with Detective Pikachu himself, Mr. Mime, Jigglypuff, Charizard, Greninja, and more all starring in the clip. As mentioned in the recent early screening report, the characters have a real-world art style to them which takes a little getting used to at first, but certainly leaves a lasting impression.
![YouTube Video](https://i.ytimg.com/vi/RLc1VHm8D80/maxresdefault.jpg)
We also get to see a nice, fan-friendly level of detail plastered through each scene; the house is full of posters and artwork that look like they'd belong in a real Pokémon world (with references to not-as-famous elements of the games, too) and the Mr. Mime scene provides a really interesting - and comical - take on the character.
With Ryan Reynolds starring as Pikachu, Justice Smith playing Tim Goodman, and other stars such as Kathryn Newton and Ken Watanabe joining the cast too, this strikes us as having a great deal of potential. The movie hits cinemas on 10th May 2019.
What do you think? Will you be going to see the movie yourself? Feel free to share your thoughts on this trailer below.

I was expecting to hate it, and, well... I hate it. But I'm not too fussed as I rarely watch movies these days anyway.
Not entirely sure how I feel about the look of the Pokemon, but it's got Ryan Reynolds and the trailer did get a laugh from me.
So I'm watchin'.
I'm not sure what to say about this.
Pikachu is a teddy bear confirmed. How does he not overheat in all that fluff, wow.
You know, I always figured that Pokémon sound just normal to each other like us with regular voices, but we just hear the goofy ones.
Also... I feel horrible as a trainer making my Pokémon fight charizard. Those teeth man...
They could add a different voice to Pikachu. It's too american...
Reminds me of those “animated characters but realistic” memes that was popular like 10 years ago.. Pikachu looks great, can’t say charizard does though
It certainly has a different tone than the Detective Pikachu game. It could be interesting.
It looks so gross and I don't like it.
@nkarafo yes because Pokemon in that universe aren’t global and couldn’t possibly have different voices and accents
As for the trailer, it got a laugh out of me. I wasn’t expecting live action when I had heard of a Det. Pikachu movie but I’ll check it out.
OKAY OKAY WE ALL KNOW THAT PIKACHU LOOKS REALLY CUTE
But i didn't like the animation for some of the other Pokemon. BUT THAT GRENINJA LOOKs AWESOME tho.
I’m honestly just confused.
I like the look of the Pokémon, but not the direction of the movie overall.
I still don't understand how Detective Pukachu came into being. But that trailer was better than 90% of movie trailers I see these days.
The Movie actually looks pretty good but I thought the Kid in the game had red or brown hair with a red jacket not what he has on in the trailer.
This may as well be the best Pokemon movie ever made. Kudos to Warner Bros and Legendary for making a good first impression so far
Wow, this looks a lot better than I was expecting. I'm kind of excited to see it now
Had no expectations. Frankly, forgot that this even existed...
Watched trailer 2x, and Shared. Wow... Looks funny. I also really like the art style/CG (whatever it's called).
Count me in 😏
The Jiggly puff looks angry I love it
Can't wait until the day a Pokemon actor wins an Oscar!
It's not quite what I was expecting, honestly. I was thinking it would be more directed at a younger audience (not that it isnt)
I'm still not going out of my way to see it, but I won't immediately roll my eyes when I hear about it.
Oh my chozo! ... It looks beyond bad 😬 ... I will wait till one of my mates buys it on dvd then I'll watch it. I'm not a Pokémon fan sooo...
This looks simultaneously incredible, confusing, unnerving, exciting, hilarious, and nightmare-inducing with all those realistic pokemon.
I can’t wait. It looks like a fun movie.
My seven old nephew see's this and he will freak. Looks pretty good can a videogame tie in actually be a good movie?.
Looks good to me.
This looks much better than I expected. But it doesn’t look great, I just expacted the worst.
IMO wouldn’t surprise me if it turns out as a clever comedy just with s**t cgi.
Erm...I love it whilst also scared by it. Pikachu looks amazing. Jigglypuff looks like that Gremlin that wore lipstick. But they got the sass right.
I think it looks cute and charming. And I’m glad it’s not this weird thing trying to not be connected to the series lore. The Sinnoh League shout out brought a smile to my face
However, I’m good with a love action Mr. Mime. Thing looks creepy...
This has so much potential! I will definitely watch it!
Looking at the youtube preview screenshot, i did cringe a little bit at fuzzy pikachu, but after watching the trailer and the other Pokemon, it looks cute and awesome in motion.
The trailer has made me smitten.
If Meowth isn't in this movie (with the original voice actor), I'm gonna be pissed, looks good though, I'll go see it with my 12 daughter for sure
now honestly, I like Ryan Reynolds, he plays some cool characters, but his acting style is very limited, you can change the appearance, but everything I have ever seen him in, he is ALWAYS that careless and flirtatious wise ass and am having trouble imagining him as what everyone has come to think of a Pikachu persona all these decades from games, movies and shows
I hope they don't mess this up
@Desrever I dunno. The average original fan of IS generally in their 30ies now so a movie that both they and their kids might enjoy(rather than exclusively their kid) it's not necessarily a bad move.
Just look at a lot of Shrek's humor(talking original movie as I'm less familiar with sequels) that often winked not at the kids watching the movie, but at the kid's parents themselves while still featuring a lot of stuff the kids may still enjoy without noticing the jokes that just got aimed at mom or dad.
This looks... well, certainly far different than anyone thought a movie based on Detective Pikachu would look. Managed to get me to consider watching it, if just to see all the special effects.
@Nemodius but Maddie who did the original meowth voice passéd away a few years back
He's so... Fluffy!
@link3710
the sfx definitely looked pretty cool
frankly, Charizard almost looks betters than the dragon in the Monster Hunter trailers, LOL
(opinion)
This looks Americanized and awful. This isn’t what Pokémon is. This isn’t even what the Detective Pikachu game was. This leaves a sick feeling in my stomach.
@wolvesboy
well, FUDGE !!!
Ok, what actor has a strong south Bronx Jewish accent could pull off a good Meowth ???
anyone ???
Well, I like it to be honest, love the style of the pokemon it looks really fun
@SlowPokemon
opinions will obviously vary and only way to find out is watch it
IMO so far they’ve nailed it. The internet cried and called for Danny Devito, but clearly he wouldn’t have fit the role. I’m pumped for this
Huge Pokemon fan, and I have to say that it looks pretty funny. Ryan Reynolds was a weird choice though, I'd have preferred a gruff sounding detective from Brooklyn or something. Or Danny Devito/Joe Pesci.
This actually looks... good???
@DenDen
Amen, they look "realized", but not distorted or altered or messed up, in fact, they look perfect, almost like they took the original frames from the shows and just added textures, I love the look
too bad not everyone so open to the new look
@Nemodius If not the original voice actor, you gotta go with Gilbert Gottfried for Meowth. Almost no other choice
Detective pikachu has set the bar. Now lets see if megaman and sonic the movies can reach it. This pokemon movie looks more awsome visually than i figured it would. i cant wait to see it!
@ItsOKToBeOK
I think Devito would have been great, imagine his voice coming from a cute little Pikachu. I'd have laughed my ass off. xD
Still looks great though, Ryan Reynolds is charming in everything he does!
That looks brilliant!
That trailer spawned some mixed emotions in me, but the good emotions overshadow the bad ones! I’m excited to check it out when it hits theaters!
Honestly this leaves me optimistic for the Mario movie. I never would have thought in a million years that we'd get a decent looking live action Pokemon movie, yet here we are. I don't think these Nintendo movies are going to win any awards, but they could be serviceable and entertaining.
@ItsOKToBeOK
LOL !!! DAMN, YOU RIGHT MAN, HOLY CRAP !!!
Meowth had to have been based on Gilbert, it's not just the voice, it's the behavior, body language, everything, LOL, Damn, how could I have not seen it before ???
I actually really like it
I'm actually impressed with the art direction of the movie. And the "pika pika" bit was pretty funny. This will be a fun movie to watch with the kid.
I was expecting something geared towards children more, and felt myself a little shocked when they said God’s name in vain in official Pokémon media. However, it looks like a really fun movie. I can’t wait to go see it.
PIKA PIKA PIKA PIKAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACHUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
PIKA PI??????
OMG, I went into that so expecting to hate every thing about it, but I love it.
Of course in my head it's called "My Pet Deadpool" and it's all about how Deadpool gets turned into a cute furry creature by an evil mutant and nobody can understand him except this one other outcast mutant kid so they band together to hunt down the evil mutant who turned Deadpool into a cute adorable furry creature.
But seriously, watch the trailer like that, and if you've seen either of the two Deadpool movies it works a whole lot better.
Pop a couple of shrooms before hitting the theater and you're good to go, Deadpool 3.
I really like how they interpreted psyducks eyes to be all iris with tiny pupils
That was... interesting. To say the least.
Fluffachu looks cuddly.
Well, so far, it made a good first impression. I hope the movie is as good as the trailer makes it seem.
I care nothing for this movie before the trailer, now im kinda of interested in it.
As for the people everywhere going on about "he sounds too american" is nonsense. Put a singular race in different nations and lets see if they all sounds the same.
The Reynolds vs De Vito is a valid argument
Looks oké and funny.
@Locke159 I personally thought he sounds too Mexican!
(Because I watched the trailer in Latin American Spanish )
Another Hollywood abomination...
This looks... Weirdly ok.
I didn’t know I needed this in my life until now. Also going to buy the game on Friday.
@Locke159
I admitted I am worried about Reynolds as Pikachu, but Danny Devito ???
love the guy, but I'm really havin' a hard time with that
I've never had any interest in Pokemon, but this trailer has me looking forward to this movie, looks really fun and more attractive to adults than the TV show, which I always found too childish even when I was young.
I wonder if this will be worse than the Monster Hunter movie.
@Nemodius Believe me I think a small part for him would be funny like maybe he's Reynolds Pikachus dad or something but I can't imagine a full length movie with Danny. I'll entertain the idea but at the end its a no go. Love him in Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
That... doesn't look bad.
I'll give it a chance.
I mentioned elsewhere that the movie will seem decent to pretty good, but the Pokemon designs are not super great.
I understand wanting to keep them recognizable, but tacking too much detail on cartoony anatomy drops you into the Uncanny Valley.
IMO, they should've pushed their designs to more match their real life counterparts, or pulled back on the hyper-realistic fluff, scales, eyes, etc., and just accept the contrast.
THIS IS PERFECT!
@Nemodius Go and see some It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, DeVito wins some Emmy's in that.
And as someone who didn't really get all the Pokemon hype from yesteryear, I think the trailer looks awesome.
Hm...it looks like it could be a decent or at worst tolerable movie, but I am NOT a fan of the style used on the Pokemon. One or two aren't too bad (if a bit too fluffy/uncanny still) but most of them look...unpleasant.
Happy Together by The Turtles
@Megal0maniac
an excellent actor does not mean the right actor for a part, of course, in reality, it's all personal preference, but for me as much as I love Danny, every since seeing him and Doc Brown on Taxi way back when, but NOT for Pikachu, again, opinion
Love Ben Afleck, great actor, same with George Clooney, both of them were good Bruce Wayne, but SUCKED as Batman
but again, it's all to each his/her own
Now Meowth was obviously moddeled after Gilbert Gottfried, (in the shows and movies - voice and persona) so it would only be right to have Gil do Meowth !!!
but again "Opinion"
I've watched the trailer 3 times now. I am hyped for this.
Going to wait for the reviews for this one. I'm glad the designs and CGI isn't that bad, but still. You never know with videogames movies.
Trailer was good. Looks like it will be an entertaining movie. Pokémon design looks fine too me. Talk to 100 people and they’d all give you a slightly different design when transitioning Pokémon to the “real world”. My kids laughed pretty hard at the trailer and shouted out every time a Pokémon showed up on screen. I have a feeling this will do very well in theaters.
I may be in the minority but I think it looks like a hoot. A hoothoot to be exact.
I'll see myself out.
This went from “no interest” to “heading to the theaters”! I’m glad the first live-action Pokémon movie is not a serious retelling of one of the animated ones — expectations are too high for that. There are NO expectations for this, and I think going this direction works!
It looks so goooooood, and Ryan Reynolds is fantastic. Cant wait!
@MoonKnight7
I have a feeling you are not as much of a minority as some here would want us to believe
I did not expect this to look this good.
Mind blown.... that looks so cool!
@MH4
You're absolutely right. The line should've been "Oh my Arceus!"
I've been looking forward to this movie since I finished the game. I like that Movie Tim has more personality than Game Tim. There needs to be real conflict between him and Detective Pikachu, like a proper buddy comedy.
Also, from my knowledge of the game I suspect Ryan Reynolds will be playing a dual role.
I can't wait to review this movie.
My first reaction: lol wtf?
My second reaction: ...
I genuinely love this, seeing what Pokemon might look like in real life is really satisfying for some reason.
I'm not a Pokemon fan and have never watched the movies, but I'm genuinely interested in this.
When I first heard about this I had 0 interest in see it but after seeing the trailer it has peeked my interest. Not sure if I will watch it at the cinema or later down the line on netflix or something.
Seems so nice!! I'm waiting for a movie like that since 1998!!!
I was interested after hearing Ryan Reynolds cast as pikachu, but after watching the trailer i'm definitely seeing this now.
Amazing art direction and looks incredibly fun. Wasn’t expecting it to look this good.
Wow that Charizard is a ABSOLUTE MURDERER!!!
Huh. The longer fur suits Jigglypuff well enough since it has the hair poof, but not Pikachu. His fur should be shorter and visually cleaner. It's not too late to do a montage where Detective Pikachu gets shampooed and trimmed up (like actual pets) and then looks crisp - more like his normal depiction.
"We weren't expecting this..."
...What were you expecting then?
@LetsGoSwitch
Uhmmm.....giant fire dragon, what were you expecting ???
come up to you, roar loadly while blowing 5,000deg flames, then suddenly grab you, lift you up and.....
"I will love you, and hug you, and squeeze you and call you Fluffy !!!"
@Yoshinator "Charizard Too Real"
would you like some cheese with your "Whine" ???
I went to watch expecting this trailer to be pants but wow...I'm impressed!But then I have never played a Pokemon game so what would i know?
That awkward moment when you're trying to decide if this trailer looks accurate to the plot of the original game, then realize you never got past chapter 1 since it was so dull.
It looks decent and funny.
Was not expecting to like this at all. Now i kinda wanna see more.
Jigglypuff's in it, and pissed off as usual. CANNOT wait to see how that pans out
This looks so good, I can't wait to see it in theaters!
This looks fantastic. My kids are excited. Looking forward to it.
Pokemon look ridiculously bad
I really hope this turns out to be the best video game movie ever made. Of course we'll have to see it, but I have high hopes after this.
Really unsure if I hate it and wait for home realise or if I'm in love with 3D furry Pokémon x Ryan Reynolds.
@nkarafo Oh no! God forbid Pikachu speaks without a foreign accent in a movie filmed in America. What exactly were you expecting? 😒
Looks okay but why didn't it go CGI like the Pixar films? Them Pokemon looks like toys when seen side by side with the human characters.
Honestly, I'm pretty interested in this now. I think the pokemon have been translated as best as you could into live action (Which with Pikachu, works great, but with Mr. Mime, looks a little strange). Still, looks to be headed in a fun direction.
i'm into it, alot of the pokemon seem to be sassy nature so far.
Weirdness indeed... Well, I'm intrigued. It's Pokémon in real life so it'll be at least slightly entertaining to watch. But it seems to be following the same boring formula most movies use nowadays. I hope they do something interesting with the plot.
Looks good. - Nice tone and the darker city aspects are refreshing. - I like that this is a real opportunity for some Pokémon to actually seem intimidating and spooky.
Damn, this looks dark and edgy. I´m sold.
@bones I thought the original Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat movies were great because they wholeheartedly embraced the campiness of their franchises. The danger is when they take themselves too seriously. The presence of Ryan Reynolds here is actually a good sign, I’d say. This from someone who has never played the games or watched the anime.
They swore in the trailer and I don’t think that fits the image of Pokémon. It actually made me a little upset. I don’t care about swearing ever but for Pokémon??? Really??? Clean it up.
Not bad, not bad at all.
@KayFiOS
yah, whining about Pikachu's accent, seriously, hmm......I understand those who are all for "Purity", he's not the only one who's got a problem, apparently, many people do, but notice the hypocriticalness that he said nothing about them changing the little Asian boy to Caucasian in game or African American in this movie ???
Honestly looks really fun, and now I can't wait
I think it looks great! Way better then I thought it would.
I'm definitely intrigued. The fact that Ryan Reynolds is in it helps its case as well IMO.
Those Pokemon designs take some getting used to, but they're starting to grow on me. I blame 20 years of the games and anime. XD
@Nemodius I mean Reynolds might actually work here. The Pikachu from the game that this is based off of does actually have that kind of personality.
I was expecting this to just be a dumpster fire of a movie... but it actually looks good! It helps that it doesn’t look like most movies today. Is anyone else getting a Jim Henson feeling with the Pokémon design?
Looks cool. But Pikachu looks fluffy af.
@RadicalThe_Tay
Hey, sometimes you need to take a step back to go two steps forward, I like that they made a good in between, too CGI toony and it wouldn't have been considered "Just Another Boring Pokemon Movie", as for too big Industrial Light and Magic super real, yah, probably would have been laughed at, this happy Muppets thing kind of works, but no matter what, you just can't make some people happy
@Yoshinator
don't get me wrong, I agree, very nice looking, and as for opinion, of course, I was just seeing a lot of people complaining that it's not real enough if they are going to change it, but then I hear it's too much and made me snicker.
just funnin' ya bro
When I first heard about "hyper-realistic Pokémon", I was ready to scream bloody murder. And lo and behold...
... it WORKS. Against all odds, against common sense, against reason, it works beautifully. As bummed as I am to discover that Alex Hirsch left the project (despite the fact his initial draft did earn him some billing-level credit for it), this just oozes Gravity Falls charm, and Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool-ish charm on top of it, something @Not_Soos might agree with me on.
I went from mildly curious to 100% sold in the span of a mere trailer alone. I'm mother-Ditto-breeding in.
My thoughts:
There were good moments. There were sh*t moments. It unfortunately kept flip-flopping between said good and sh*t moments. At least the models look good.
Oh wow... that is not bad at all actually!
Reminder... This thanksgiving 🙂
https://www.fathomevents.com/events/pokemon-the-movie-21/theaters
@RazorThin I thought it was the other way around!
I must say... I'm not sure about this one. It could be good, the realistic animation is really throwing me! Charazard looks awesome realistic though! The others... they almost look real enough that they look fake if you know what I mean!
"Will you be going to see the movie yourself?"
NO and NEVER !!!
This is so far from the pokemon I know and love that it really feels like its own thing. It looks kinda cheesy but I'm looking forward to it.
Charizard looks as it should; a dragon that has no qualms about eating smaller animals.
But you just know peta is going to have a fieldday trying to milk publicity from this
Omg it’s amazing
Is it just me, or does Pikachu look kinda creepy?
I didn't think I would like it until I saw this
If you really think about it, even if fans don't like the "realistic" aproach, I think it was the way to go, or else it wouldn't feel real to have actor talking to big CG rubber balloons
I think Reynolds' voice is ok for the role, but I really wish Detective Pikachu had the gruffy voice from the game, or similar
Looked much better than I expected and seems much funnier than I expected which are both good things so I will be watching it.
I ll watch it definitely!
@Nemodius I seriously do not. He's whining about Pikachu sounding "too American." What the hell does that even mean? Pikachu sounds pretty much like everyone else in the film, and I'm sure he'd whine even more if Pikachu had a Brooklyn accent and sounded like the Lorax, which a lot of people apparently wanted.
not sure what to make of it i am not exactly loving the look of the pokemon but it looks like it could have an interesting plot and be funny along the way
@Anti-Matter Why not lol? It's Pikachu, and he's fuzzy, what's not to like about that?
@Nemodius Also, what's this crap you're spewing about African-American or Asian whatever? Don't make it into something it isn't. I said foreign accent, which could mean Irish, Scottish, Australian or British. Like, if this was filmed in London, I wouldn't be magical mystery touring about Pikachu sounding "too British..." Heck, it would be pretty awesome to have him be like another famous British detective. But @nkarafo seems to have a proem with an American Pikachu sounding "too American." Seems a bit silly to me.
Not for me but then again this isn't for me, this is for kids.
Not going to lie but that actually looks highly entertaining.
@Yoshinator
hey, I'm not innocent when it comes to occasionally jumping to a conclusion, LOL
I consider myself an overly open minded person, comes with my line of work, but occasionally I jump the gun too
it's all about fun though right ???
@KayFiOS
never mind, it wasn't like that, and it wasn't against you, and had nothing to do with race, had to do with changing from what it was originally which many people seem to be superfluous about and changed to suit a more western audience,
it wasn't race, but if that's where you want to go
anyway, I'm dropping it
I'm in! I liked the trailer and I think it's gonna be more fun than people give it credit for. I'll watch this when it comes to my area. I love Ryan Reynolds.
@Nemodius That's not where I want to go, but it seemed that's where you wanted to go. Sorry if that was a misunderstanding on my part, but the issue here is @nkarafo didn't elaborate on what he meant. He complained without really saying what his issue was. And if you understand what he meant, by all means, explain it to me, but if you know just as well as I do, then you have no business trying to speak for him.
If its anything like the Ted Movie minus the expletives it will sell.
@NintyNate "oh my chozo"
...what?
@nkarafo This comment is gonna cost you big time on the forums.
It's an American movie, made by and American company, with American actors. I'm sure if a Japanese company made the movie they would go in the same direction. Nice "subtle" discriminatory thoughts though.....
This is gonna shift more than a few Switches. Also, my man Mr Mime was awesome!
Didn't expect this. I like it.
@DTFaux Gonna have to straight up disagree with you entirely on that one. The majority of the Pokemon so far don't fall into the uncanny valley. Even Dotrio and freaking Charizard and Greninja look good here, and that was entirely unexpected for me.
Please kill me now.
@Freelance
would you will my youngest daughters your Switch and games before you go running into traffic to be killed ???
@Nemodius I...actually don't have a Switch Honest. Ask Yosheel. He will vouch for me.
@Freelance
LOL, just havin' LOL !!!
@Octane
Just look who is the man behind that Pikachu ?
@G_M chozo are gods
uhg....I have no idea why, but the more I keep watching the trailer about small "Pocket Monsters", it makes me think of giant ones coming late 2019, I hate waiting !!!
This looks awesome! I was totally not expecting to love this...but I love this! I like how it's a bit darker and edgier in tone, it reminds me a bit of "Who Framed Roger Rabbit."
@Nemodius I was having a laugh too, except I really don't have a Switch :3
Not bad.
Not bad at all.
This looks...... surprisingly decent. I smiled at the dodrio just casually walking with the people in the beginning of the clip.
@AlexSora89 This is my first time hearing Hirsch is no longer involved on the project, which I must say is rather disappointing. I gave the trailer a second watch, but none of the writing overtly screams "Gravity Falls" to me, if I'm being honest. I haven't seen Deadpool to be able to comment on that comparison, but I don't think that's what you were asking. I'm not really a Pokémon guy, but the movie looks like it could have potential, and I definitely expect to have a fun time if I go see this with my other nerdy pals next year.
Looks like a hello Theodore
What the heck did I just watch?!! Kill it with fire!!!
Not surprised to see low expectation Nintendo fanboys excited about 5.0, phoned in, lowest common denominator Jar Jar Binks spinoff movie.
@RadicalThe_Tay This is one of the worst things I've ever read.
I was left speechless of what they did. They did what some people would dream of, seeing Pokemon if they were irl. Im impressed at the designs and detail they put in to make those dreams come true, and now Id love to hug that Pikachu. My Discord buddies and I have been thinking what other Pokemon could like as well, with how they are portrayed. Gardevoir could look excellent with her elegance, Primarina would look great in an opera setting, all the canine and feline Pokemon you can think of, Eevee and the Eeveelutions, and more... This art direction has SOOO much potential of pure IMAGINATION, I wish I could see more of it with the other Pokemon. I daresay, this has set the standard on what a liveaction video game movie would look like, transferring what they can from the OG source to live action. With the Sonic movie coming up, I am curious as to what Sonic looks like. Other movie ideas I can think of in this manner... How about Metroid, Star Fox, or even Zelda? Anyway, a good first ambitious attempt and kudos to make this No 1 trending on YT, which beats even Toy Story 4. If there are more Pokemon movies like this in the future, I wouldnt mind seeing a live action story featuring Red and his journey throughout Kanto.
Did anyone else notice Jigglypuff was holding a black marker with a soft green cap like the anime?
After looking at the video thumbnail, I thought the trailer would be somewhat creepy, which it wasn't. I still think it would be better as an animated movie however.
Ok, I was completely over Pokemon generations ago, but consider me back on board. Mind = blown (even after a coworker mentioned that at work today that Ryan Reynolds was voicing Pikachu).
This will be, according to a quick search, the 22nd Pokemon movie. Of those, I've been legitimately hyped about exactly two of them: the very first one, back in 1999, and now this.
Seems very divisive and I can't even decide how to feel about it
It turned out a lot better than I thought it would.
The still shot looked worrisome, but it all looks a lot better in motion. The voice acting for pikachu helps a lot. The whole look of the pokemon is different, and maybe furrier than I expected. It hsimultaneously looks good but also a bit weird/jarring in real life. If anything it's standoutish/unique.
I think overall the movie will be an interesting watch, though, so that's a win, especially for a first forray into live action Nintendo video game movie (at least, it's been awhile).
Wow I’m shocked at how good that movie looks. I’m completely sold
@AlexSora89 " and Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool-ish charm on top of it, something might agree with me on."
Well I agreed with you, see post #60.
Cringe, no thanks, the entire movie is in the trailer, why even bother seeing this trash.
My god, Jigglypuff here is the creepiest thing I've ever seen.
@RazorThin it looks awfull when did all pokemon get furr even charizard looks like an animation some youtuber could have done better.
Could have been much better if they did the animations like space jam.
@N1ntendodo The illusion of "realness" works about as well as if you saw the Carfax fox next to a real life human being. It's off and there's a huge breach of immersion due to how ungodly and awful the lighting, models, and facial animations are for creatures that are animals with magic powers.
@Anti-Matter Who? A good, charismatic, comedian actor?
Because that is what Ryan Reynolds is.
Justice Smith plays some super annoying characters, but the rest of the movie looks worthwhile
What if this is a testbed for the art direction of future Pokemon Core games??
@Anti-Matter Ryan Reynolds? He's a pretty funny actor.
That's made my day, I love it!!
@Anti-Matter An actor? Just because he played Deadpool doesn't mean he's going to be skewering people as a cute little Pikachu. Actors are people who pretend to be something else for a living.
I'm guessing Deadpool met Cappy and took over a Pikachu.
@SmaggTheSmug @Octane
I don't even like him from the first time i knew he was also at that DAMN movie.
I had put him on my Black List, the List of my Hatred Things.
Using him as Pikachu = Insulting me in my face directly.
I don't see myself going to the movies for this but I will likely download it at certain point
@Anti-Matter You need to be put in intensive treatment facility.
"List of my Hatred Things" how do they even let you teach children with this mindset is beyond me.
We weren't expecting this... Me neither! but my son was glowing all over when he saw the trailer, surprised and super excited to see it next year in the cinema!
That is all that matters! Kids will love this movie and are excited about it!
Sad individuals like Anti-Matter can crawl back under the rock they came from and sulk on. There are worse things in live to worry about, than starting a whole tirade on a website about a kids movie!
that looks absolutely incredible. Genuinely, I think this could be the best video game movie ever made. When I first heard of this I thought it'd be a train wreck, but love that trailer. Ryan Reynolds is perfectly cast.
@Anti-Matter Dude, re-assess those priorities. Life's too short.
@Anti-Matter lol. You are one funny guy/girl
@SegaBlueSky @Jeronan
I'm waiting for English version of Pokemon Movie Everybody's Dream at my country Indonesia.
I have No interest at all to watch Detective Pikachu.
@1UP_MARIO
I'm a guy anyway.
This movie fits right in the uncanny valley to me.
Whether it's good or bad, there's something we all should accept here: the people behind this movie at least know what they're doing.
Remember Nintendo last live action movie? What about every other videogame-based live action movie before this one?
@Anti-Matter How many times needs it to be said that Ryan Reynolds is an actor!
Have you ever read about Deadpool? We might not like Deadpool, but Ryan Reynolds did a fantastic job with the movies. That is what Deadpool is. I don't like the character much either, but I respect Ryan for making a damn good adaption of it in the movies. It's not an easy feat.
But you are acting like Pikachu is going to behave like Deadpool in the movie, because of Ryan Reynolds. That is just terribly narrowminded and stupid.
Ever heard of that little actor guy called Mark Hamill? He played in those SciFi movies, like some naive dreaming kid and became some lightsaber waving master in the end.
Who would have ever thought he would do one of the best Joker voice overs in all the DC video games of the past two decades?
A good actor is versatile and can adapt.
I'll wait to judge the designs for the final product but I'm not liking the aesthetic realistic Pokemon in this trailer. The fluffy ones are ok but the hairless ones just don't look as good.
@Jeronan
I DON'T CARE !!
I had Condemned that DAMN Movie and ALL the peoples who got involved in that DAMN Movie.
Do NOT Remind me again that DAMN Movie !
I DO NOT Even want to hear or know that anymore.
@Anti-Matter Chill … psycho.
@Anti-Matter There is also a Deadpool 2 movie. You should see that one.
@Jeronan
Could you PLEASE STOP mentioning that DAMN Movie ?!
Please, DO NOT Ever say that name again in front of me !
@Anti-Matter Deadpool 3 with Ryan Reynolds has been announced too now:
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt6263850/?ref_=nv_sr_3
@Jeronan
Okay, That's It !
(Press Ignore Button)
Wow, that looks awful. Creepy, uncanny valley-looking pokémon that look horribly jarring next to live action.
Cya
Raziel-chan
Whaaaaaaat a surprise, I think it'll be a good/funny movie after all. At least the trailer made me laugh..
Now THIS is every pokemon fans dream
Most of them just look different than what was expected, so that's why it's weird.
Some of them don't look too great though, like the bulbasaur.
I want so see this. Oh yeah
@rjejr Deadpool 3: Gotta Kill 'em All...
I must say I'm pleasantly surprised, since I lost interest in Pokemon long ago already, but I guess that's also due in part to Ryan Reynold's solid and hilarious voice acting work.
I mean, come on:
"Put down that stapler, or I will electrocute you"
That line alone already cracked me up. That typical Reynolds' delivery,
it's just pure comedy genius, far as I'm concerned...
Sad to see the comments section once again being infected with our friend Anti-Matter's single-minded, autistically-impaired and otherworldly view, though...
@ThanosReXXX The trailer for a Pokémon spin-off movie got 230 comments, the review for the remake of the Pokémon Yellow game only got 160. Gotta love this place sometimes. 😂
It's a good thing nobody mentioned the Green Latern movie, might have really set him off. 😉 (For the record my wife and I both liked that movie, though we are aware nobody else did.)
Probably won't see this in theaters, there's a lot of movies to see next year already, but will watch it at home when available. Of course I watched Batman v Superman at home so that's not much of a vote of confidence.
@rjejr Well, we can shake hands on that one as well, because I also liked the Green Lantern movie, although the fight against the mutated idiot was a bit underwhelming and unintentionally (?) comical.
But I'm kinda biased, because I like most of Ryan Reynold's movies.
Yup, even the romantic ones...
But A-M only got angry because of the Deadpool movies. And realistic Pokemon, which, in his own words, "are suck", because regardless of being a teacher, decent English also still alludes him, even though there's hundreds of examples on this site on a daily basis, so you'd think someone should at the very least pick something up from that...
And for the record: I think this movie is going to do better than Batman v Superman, so it might be worth going to the cinema for.
I also watched Batman v Superman at home. In fact: I haven't seen a single DC movie in the theater, only the Marvel ones, because they're so much grander in design and execution.
@ThanosReXXX
Ohhhh Thank God me and my wife aren't the only ones who loved GL !!!
How is your opinion of Kilowog ???
I admit I would've rather seen a John Stewart GL, personally, but I liked this one too
@Nemodius Pretty decent representation, far as I am concerned.
Personally, I do like series and/or movies to either feature or pay homage to the original characters, or at least have some flashbacks showing them/telling their story. Hal Jordan was the original one for many of us, until we learned that the story was actually much older than that, much like my own experience with characters such as The Flash. I always thought Barry was the first one, since I never really read the Golden Age DC comics.
I have always been more of a Marvel fan, except for Superman and Batman, two comics series that I've followed for just as long as my favorite Marvel characters.
By the way: welcome to the site. Couldn't help but check your profile and see you were a new addition to the ranks.
Always good to have yet another intelligent person to talk to, instead of all the people that are so extreme in their convictions, that you can't win no matter which way you roll...
Back to GL, and DC movies in general: they are entertaining enough, but what they miss is a bit of lightheartedness, and for the life of me, I also can't understand why they don't just copy Marvel in how they incorporate their cinematic universe into their series as well, and/or the other way around.
I love DC's series, and the actors could easily hold their own in movies as well, so why get another, rather unconvincing actor as the Flash, while you already have one that's settled into the role quite nicely?
And other examples of expansions to the JLA could easily come in the form of Arrow's lead star and Supergirl, both actors that have already featured in big movies, so I'd say use them in the movies as well.
P.S.
On a side note: I do hope you were kidding about the illegal street fighting bit. As a former martial arts practitioner myself, I kind of have a hard time seeing a quantum physics theorist doing the whole Fight Club thing, no offense...
(unless of course all of that was just you joking around, in which case, you can consider the whole P.S. part as not written... )
@ThanosReXXX
my career does not mean I am your stereotypical, long scraggly haired, stuffy shirt
and yes, I do fight, and game, and am a hard core Star Wars Guru AND Trekkie (I know, a mortal sin in most countries), I trained under Ki Soo Jung for 20 years in Aurora CO, U.S. and......
well, let this tell you the rest
me about 10 years ago on a bet from my students
remember, stereotypes hurt too
Oh, Grazie for the belated welcome bro
@Nemodius Ah, okay... was the payoff of the bet to appear on camera with a Mohawk or with Photo-shopped teeth?
By the way: wasn't trying to stereotype you. For one, online profiles only every once in a while actually contain the whole truth and nothing but the truth, but I was more thinking along the lines of illegal street fights not being all that rule-bound, something that official sports do offer, meaning that physical and/or mental damage is less likely to occur.
The latter would seem rather risky in certain professions...
But maybe I'm overstepping here, in which case again: I meant no offense, just curious.
Oh, and don't worry: I'm not offended by you being both a Star Wars AND a Star Trek fan, seeing as that's another thing that we have in common. Entertaining Sci-Fi is entertaining Sci-Fi, no matter the label attached to it...
So, 20 years of Taekwondo, huh? Color me impressed. Did Judo, Karate and kickboxing myself, partially as self-medication for my aggression problems, so kind of like anger management, but that seems ages ago now.
Career-life and other private matters/issues more or less took over my life, so I'm rather pressed for time nowadays, and I'd need to invest a LOT of time to get back into that shape again, and at my age, that's something I don't know I want to invest so much time and energy in anymore. Maybe when the personal storm dies down a bit, in a year or two...
As it stands, I'm one of the older residents on here, along with @rjejr, and a small handful of others. But much to my own surprise still an avid gamer, though...
@ThanosReXXX
I was having fun about the stereotype comment my friend
the video was a bet on my birthday, if I could not beat Terry in a Doctor Who trivia contest, I had to make a very humiliating video and post it on my FB page, if I won, Terry had to walk around campus wearing nothing but Kool Whip and a Speedo carrying a sign that said "Sweet Treat"
and the mini mohawk was my normal look for ma y years untill about 3 years ago when I just evened it up the make one of the new council members happy
I fight for mainly the stress relief, but the money I have my daughter bet on me helps out with some bills too
you seem like an awesome guy and got a good deal in common, hope we can be good buds
@Nemodius Much appreciated, and likewise. Enough trolls and fools on here already, so to be able to add another actually sane person to the list is a win in my book.
Only now saw your edit: so, from the grazie, can I safely assume your of Italian origin? We've got a couple of resident Italians on here already, so you might get to know these too, at some point, if you stick around long enough.
This site used to offer a bit more info on people's profiles, but because of the new privacy rules, stuff like male/female and age was removed.
But putting a limit on the number of characters was always gonna hamper a complete profile anyway. Well, at least for the more text-wall prone people among us, such as me...
Long story-short: I'm a globe-trotting Californian, lived and worked abroad ever since we left the States when I was 9, and I ultimately ended up in Amsterdam, where I now live (and work) with my plants and my reasonably large collection of game consoles and handhelds...
So, now you know who you're dealing with: a former martial arts practicing American with a Dutch passport, and not to forget a love (besides games, sci-fi and superheroes) for Bacardi and Coke.
Oh, and beautiful women, of course. Can't forget those...
Greek/Sicilian Jew, first generation American
my globe trotting is limited to the occasional conferences and lectures about every other year, I'm hoping to be invited to a conference in Brussels, October Next year, maybe I can stop by and we can toss back a pint and shoot the breeze, maybe spar for fun LOL
@ThanosReXXX DC movies are made to be watched on 13" B&W tvs w/ a lot of static. Poorly dubbed like 1980's kung fu flicks. "Who is your butler? My butler is Mr. Alfred."

@ThanosReXXX Man, what are you trying to drag me into this time.
Man, we haven't had a decent Pokemon movie since....
Ok, we haven't had a decent Pokemon movie. The first one was the best, and even that was more passable fan service. But I'm legitimately interested in this - hiring people with a passion, taking a big risk with the art style and the humor - I think it'll pay off!
@rjejr I don't drag people into anything that they don't allow themselves to be dragged into...
@Lovecraft_1 ???
What are you talking about? Some Jackson guy? Got booted?
He's still here, so not booted, obviously. And who is this Jackson guy? The only other discussion he was having, was resolved later on, in this same thread here.
And BFF? If that is how we label a friendly conversation nowadays... Guess I'm getting too old to be on the internet or something. Or I must be talking to a completely new member who isn't really up to speed with how we roll in this community here...
P.S.
That last bit was a joke, just in case...
I think the Pokemon look pretty good, but the plot and casting are dubious at best... It needs a strong lead in my opinion, but they've gone with someone with limited experience who got a good break in Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom and did everything they asked of him, but it was an utterly forgetful character and performance.
@Lovecraft_1 Hm... Well, far as I can tell, his account is still active, so even if he is indeed banned, then it's only a temporary one.
A cool-off period, so to speak. If he was set up by someone else, that's bad, though.
What he could do, is contact the admins, via the link at the bottom of every page, and make his case there, if he doesn't agree. But either way, the ban will be lifted again at some point, so it's not permanent, otherwise his account would have been deleted as well.
@ThanosReXXX Good point.
Doesn't look that bad to be honest.
@Audigore0733 Slighlty biased towards Greninja (Its totally my favorite starter) but why do they all look so furry? Even my boi Greninja does and he's a frog ninja!
@rjejr
Yep, this has amazing written all over it. I hope there's some actual Pokémon training in future films, though, because the fact the first Pokémon live action movie uses a detective story-inspired spinoff as the basis for its premise raises some unfortunate implications, I think (then again, I'm always paranoid when it comes to conspiracy theories... where did I put my tinfoil hat?) - basically anti-Pokémon-tournament-arc bias or something.
Then again, some actual fighting is seen in the trailers, so I have total faith in the movie. I mean, there's still Alex Hirsch's influence in it, and that's a selling point to me.
@Not_Soos
Yep. This baby seems to be winning everyone, even my Xbox-loving and Pokémon-sorta-hating friend, which is saying quite a lot.
@AlexSora89 I did think it kind of weird that the first Pokemon movie to look this cool was for Detective Pikachu and not a more mainline Pokemon movie, some of which I've really liked.
My guess is just in case it crashed and burned at the box office they had an out, it wasn't a "real" Pokemon movie, just a spin-off.
On the bright side it's not a Pokemon Go based movie remake of "The Wizard". That's probably next year, Fred Savage will probably play the dad.
@rjejr
"I love the Pokéball Plus. It's so bad."
@AlexSora89 "Well yeah, just keep your Pokeballs away from my girl."
Video game Armageddon would just be a bunch of people falling off of cliffs while they try to catch the Pokemon in Go. 😂
@rjejr
I'd post that one console wars-y commercial about people throwing the rival system (maybe Playstations, in a Saturn commercial IIRC) but I can't seem to find it.
@AlexSora89 That's ok, we got enough people throwing stuff around here as it is. You should see everybody throwing stuff over on the PS site now that Sony has said they aren't going to E3 next year. Kinda funny actually.
@rjejr
Yeah, about that...
Trailer is awesome. Watched the movie recently. Its awesome. Watch all latest movies, TV shows and series for free on Android using cinema APK. Get it from https://cinemafreeapk.com/download/
Awesome movie! I'm so excited for it and I'm also a big fan of Ryan Reynolds! Check this out! https://kiltzone.com/list-of-best-leather-kilts-for-men/
Why on gods green earth would you make pikachu's voice ryan reynolds. As soon as i heard that i was 100% sure that they ruined pokemon and my childhood forever. Before i heard his voice as pikachu i was only 98% sure, as the main character looks wack also
