Re: Review: Mortal Kombat 11 - A Satisfying Dose Of Comic Hyper-Violence Despite Loot Balance Issues

nab1

@Lionyone To be fair, the Switch port does deserve some points reduced compared to the others, not because of the graphical downgrades (which were expected) but due to other issues that should have been accounted for given the portable nature of the Switch (none of which this review mentions), such as requiring an online connection is pretty much a none issue on a regular console, but on the Switch it affects the ability to play portably. Some features like character tutorials weren't available last time I checked (which compromises the promised feature parity), and there's several graphical glitches such as Kabal basically teleporting across the screen in one of his win poses.

> items locked behind microtransactions, that ugly avarice for additional expenditure is there

Please stop spreading this misinformation. This is a complete and honestly ignorant lie. NOTHING is "locked" behind micro-transactions. The ONLY thing you can buy in the store are crystals used IF you want to buy skins right away instead of finding them and unlocking them in the game. The store itself even tells you whether that item is in the Krypt, Towers of Time, etc. These crystals only exist for those who don't want to bother unlocking them the normal way that most MK games since Deadlly Alliance have done it (you play the various games modes, you earn the ability to unlock things progressively). No other resource is sold, so nothing is "locked" behind micro transactions.

What the game currently is, is a huge time sink because one of the best ways to gather the resources is the Towers of time, and some of those towers are unfairly balanced, which is what NRS started to address on day one.

Quite honestly it's annoying how so many sites are reporting this incorrectly, and how so many people jump on the hate bandwagon having no idea what they're talking about.

The game has no loot boxes (things behind a paywall to get a random item) AT ALL.

Re: Capcom Teases An Arcade Collection With Some Rare Gems

nab1

I just want a port of Capcom vs SNK, Rival Schools or its sequels. I'd pay anything for them. But I'm definitely intrigued by this collection, I hope it does include some of Capcom's forgotten gems.

EDIT: After seeing the actual trailer, how in the world do they think this is a better idea than re-releasing at least some of the gems they've been sitting on for so many years for the current consoles? It boggles my mind.

Re: Mortal Kombat 11's $100 Premium Edition Contents Revealed

@MaxlRoseGNR finally, someone who gets it. There’s too many comments here that don’t understand this sort of game.

Personally this is a day one for me. I would have preordered already if they had shown footage, but based on the feedback of those who played and understand this type of game I’m confident it will be a worthwhile release. Counting the days!

Re: Guide: How To Fix A Drifting Nintendo Switch Joy-Con Analogue Stick

nab1

@Stocksy By Nintendo standards, it's definitely shoddy. If you haven't had these issues, good for you. But I've owned every Nintendo console including the Virtual Boy, and the Switch is the first one where I've had major control issues (both joy cons and pro controller), and I know quite a few people that have had the same issues.

I agree that sometimes internet people blow up these issues way out of proportion, but in the case of the Switch controllers there's definitely multiple real issues, either due to poor design or bad construction. And the fact that the controllers are so expensive only makes it worse.

Re: Video: Johnny Cage Revealed For Mortal Kombat 11, Here's A First Look

nab1

@RetroGamerAndrew I'm a huge MK2 fan an IMO there hasn't been a good Johnny Cage since the Daniel Pesina days, but I think they may have finally created a great JC. The move set is very well done, and that fatality is such a great callback to his 3-head uppercut in MK 2.

And it might be just me, but I think the face in the thumbnail looks a little like Daniel Pesina.

Re: Feature: Reggie's Video Highlights From 15 Years At The Top Of Nintendo

Two additional great appearances by Reggie, from The Game Theorists:

  • Should Nintendo STOP Making Consoles?
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QhTL41TPiAY
  • Zelda: Do Motion Controls RUIN Gameplay?
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JOMnpDH7CZA

Just the fact that he offered himself to discuss these topics merit my respect.

Re: Ed Boon Teases Mortal Kombat 11 Character With Obscene Hand Gesture

nab1

@KennyBania Smash Bros has did it way better. They guarantee (to my knowledge based on the weekly GameXplain videos about it, I don't really follow Smash) one character per week. With MK 11 it's like "well, we may or may not show a character next week, who knows?", and it's worse because they're doing it so close to release.

Re: Ed Boon Teases Mortal Kombat 11 Character With Obscene Hand Gesture

nab1

Since the announcement of MK11, I'm more hyped than I've been ever since the MK4 home ports. However, this method of teasing/revealing characters sucks, specially so close to launch. It's a waste of time. I'd rather they just spill the beans, at least with regards to modes and other content if not the characters.

Re: Reggie Fils-Aime Is Retiring After 15 Notable Years At Nintendo of America

nab1

Best of luck to Reggie, I'll certainly miss him. He's probably the first "executive-type" person that I actually learned the name of, and for good reason. Great job over many years.

PS: I was expecting way more mean spirited comments towards Reggie from clueless people, but I'm happily surprised by just a few ones. Good job NL commenters!

Re: Trials Rising On Switch Doesn't Rise Up To The Challenge Of Its Rivals

nab1

The fog has to be a mistake in the settings or something in the Switch build (in which case it'd still be a MAJOR oversight to say the least), it looks more like some tracks in previous games that actually have fog for ambiance. The previous console game, Trials Fusion, did run at 60fps on the 360 without such measures, just at a noticeably lower resolution and level of detail. Even the in-between mobile game runs pretty well on my phone and Apple TV.

There's always the chance of just being a lazy port of course, but having played all Trials games since even the first Java ones, I'll give RedLynx the benefit of the doubt until the actual release. But definitely not day-1 material though.

Re: Brand New Sega Dreamcast Controller Hits Kickstarter And Smashes Target

nab1

@Alucard83 I don't know why, maybe licensing with SNK? They re-released a lot of other great fighters in newer consoles like Darkstalkers, Marvel vs Capcom, SF3, but for some reason Capcom vs SNK is relegated to Dreamcast, and its sequel to PS2, Xbox and GCN. And it's a shame because IMO it's one of their best games ever.

I'd pay full retail price for them.

Re: Review: Tetris 99 - A Revolutionary Take On A Puzzle Classic

nab1

I've never had the issue most people complain about the Pro controller d-pad, but this game made me experience it right away. It's really unplayable with the Pro unless I turned off the insta-drops. Thankfully the joy-cons work perfectly and I could play it as god intended.

Re: Guide: What's New In Super Mario Maker 2 For Nintendo Switch?

nab1

@AlexSora89 Indeed. This is definitely a game that is better digital (unless they include an art book again, in which case I'd be conflicted). If nothing else, because more than likely no cartridge will ever contain the full game after its inevitable updates, which means it will eventually be split between cart and SD card anyway, might as well just put the whole thing in an SD card anyway.

Also, if anyone boos you for your choice of format, that person needs a priority check

Re: Ken, Daisy And Young Link amiibo All Release This April

nab1

@thesilverbrick To be fair, the build quality has also gone way up since the first Amiibos. Compare the original Link Amiibo to the newest Splatoon, Zelda or even Smash Amiibos for example.

As an Amiibo collector, the one that did bother me was Detective Pikachu, which was too expensive and too big for no real reason (even though I still bought it because I can't be trusted with a credit card )
