@dewokkel 1 is a masterpiece, but I'd argue Infinite is better or at least more interesting than 2, which is too much of the same as 1 but nothing of what made 1 a masterpiece.
@Grot I get why people would say "pretentiousness" about Braid, because it can come up that way for some. But IMO what Braid did great is that all of the backstory and symbolism was was all optional, skip-able, subtle and open to interpretation, only there for just those who cared. EDIT: One can play the game as just a puzzle platformer and not care about any of that. Unlike say Celeste which spoon feeds you a silly story right in your face with no way to skip it, to the detriment of the game.
@Obito_Sigma This. I think Super Meat Boy and Braid opened up the indie scene to be what it is today, specially in terms of pricing. I remember when Braid release a lot of people where shocked Braid launched at $15 or so, and not just a few dollars like other indie games were.
Now the Switch just needs Fez to be complete indie wise.
At least some of the allegations in that page are not harassment or assault in any way. They dilute the ones that could actually be real concerns. That's the problem with this movement. It's hard to take it seriously when so many potentially false or overreaching accusations are quickly bandwagoned, treated and punished the same way as the real ones that should be pursued.
I'm probably in the minority, but I still don't understand. Who goes into the eShop thinking "what can I spent my money on"?, where discoverability is such a make or break feature of an online store. And how is the eShop worse or different than say the Xbox store in that regard? I frequent that a lot, and I don't see a difference. Maybe they're expecting something like the iOS App Store with its editorial recommendations, but from what I've seen in the consoles I have this is how their stores are.
@patbacknitro18 Exactly, that was my thought when I saw these numbers. Online commenters seem to think their rants (valid or not) are representative of the overall public reception, but you can't argue with numbers. This shows many million people at the very least didn't care as much as they did.
Personally I lowered the difficulty on Doom and Wolfenstein on Switch, not because I couldn't "git gud" enough, but because to me it's insane and unacceptable that a game forces you to wait 15+ seconds to reload the exact same level you were on, every single time you die, and specially on games that you are expected to die a lot. Eventually that becomes frustrating and if I just want to experience the story or explore the worlds, I'm fine with lowering the difficulty. It's a better option than skipping the game entirely out of frustration.
EDIT: I'd also add another method of lowering the difficulty is using a guide, which is something I've done for games that are designed around a lot of trial an error and I just didn't feel engaged enough to keep wasting time retrying things myself just to guess what the game intended me to find out.
@OorWullie I don't think the hub world uses anti-aliasing, it's just that the hub world runs at a higher resolution and a lower framerate since there's no action. Even the ink is more detailed in single player modes. I could be wrong on that, but that's what I see and I think it's what the DF analysis mentioned at the time IIRC.
But yeah, I'd also love to have more Splatoon games outside of "just" the multiplayer aspect. To me the Octo expansion proved there's a lot they can do with the existing world and mechanics for a full fledged single player experience.
Celeste is a severely overrated game, the story that everyone praises is incredibly shallow and way on the nose, and adds a lot of unnecessary baggage to the mechanics and level flow. Personally I don't think it should be used as a comparison as if it was the goal to beat. Super Meat Boy and Braid for me are still the yardstick games that should be looked up to and that no game has beaten yet, in terms of mechanics (SMB) and storytelling (Braid).
This has been talked a lot lately, but in reality a higher MSRP price only affects two crowds: People who buy games at launch, and Nintendo fans because their games hardly ever go on sale. I personally save a ton of money by just waiting for the inevitable price drop which doesn't take long, unless it's a game I really must play right away. And for those few games, which are usually Nintendo games, I wouldn't mind paying more if the game is worth it. I payed $160 for BotW (both console versions each with the DLC), and definitely feel I got my money's worth.
I personally think reviews in general don't do any good, they only either spoil the experience or predispose people into a certain view of the thing being reviewed, but certainly user reviews are absolutely pointless. Might as well remove them entirely.
I might get this day one, it checks all the boxes for me. My only question now is if the gyro is truly 1:1 like Splatoon 2 or if it's like Wolfenstein where the aim artificially drifted a little after a short while, I guess to simulate "realism".
I hope they eventually release Banjo and Terry Amiibos, out of the entire remaining roster those are the only two I hope get made before they stop making new Amiibos, if they do.
Wow, there's a lot of commenters here that must be super fun at parties.
Personally, I think this story has as much merit to be on the site as the usual "Nintendo sells X number of consoles this week", except this one is actually more entertaining.
@sanderev I don't get the hate Jar Jar gets either. Specially when C3PO is far, far more annoying and is in practically every movie for no real reason. And at this point I think a lot of younger kids just pile on the "jar jar bad!" meme with no real knowledge of the franchise.
I tried this on Apple Arcade but found it pretty boring and generally uninteresting. Some may call it a BotW clone but it's nothing like it. A game like this looks interesting in the mobile world because there aren't many like it, but on consoles there's far better options to play.
@fafonio "but because most people will only have played it once and that’s it."
I think you're in a minority there. In most forums I've seen when people discuss BotW they mention multiple playthroughs, and many, myself included, usually mention being tempted to replay it just by looking at it. I personally want to do several playtrhoughs just so I can have an account save before each divine beast because I loved them and wish I could replay them at any time. IMO they fixed most of the issues traditional dungeons have.
Day one purchase for me. The price is just right for a launch day, and I've always wanted to play this game but never got to it, even though I do have the N64 cart.
The 2D games are good as they are, I think the most benefit would be in the pre Wii U 3D games (64, Sunshine and Galaxy(s)) which were my picks.
However, I'd love to have an NSMB collection that bundles all the previous games but updated to the NSMBU/SMM2 level of detail. The first one in particular I enjoyed a lot on DS, it would be great to have an HD version of it.
@GodOfLard I agree to a point. I am interested in playing the original port that is still the same game just HD, but when fans start adding unnecessary stuff that wasn't in the base game (ray tracing) and/or looks completely different (that modern Mario model looses the charm of the original), that's where I loose interest.
It was a fun movie, and Jim Carrey did an awesome Robotnik. It's good to know they're making a new one, hopefully more into the Sonic world than the real world.
Maybe this just isn't the best level to showcase, but it doesn't look better than the original, just a little "cleaner". The only way to make the original games justice IMO would be to re-generate all the sprites from the original models as if they were creating the game today, but for the higher resolutions of modern displays. But definitely should be sprite based.
@SuperWeird Honest question, I still have the Wii collection but hardly ever played it, how different are the versions in that collection vs the newer Hamster ones or this collection for someone that only plays offline?
@Bomberman64 Actually, I can't believe I forgot about Bomberman 64, it's one of my favorite game soundtracks ever, they don't make that many games anymore with such happy and inspiring music. I still have my original cartridge, and play the VC version from time to time on Wii U.
Jokes aside, I wonder what the shifty stations will be, if it'll be the same as the original Mayo vs Ketchup battle, or all of them like in the last Splatfest.
I remember feeling bad back in the N64 days because I thought I was really missing out by not having a PS1. But in hindsight, I realize that was not the case at all. I was spared all the horrible loading times of the era, most of the games I thought I wanted on PS1 back then weren't actually good (for me), and the ones that were would be playable later in much better versions.
And the N64 audio may have been "worse", but still the sounds and music in Super Mario 64, Waverace and Banjo Kazooie were the most memorable to me from games of that era. EDIT: And Star Fox, and Diddy Kong Racing.
@retro_player_77 I agree, the placement of the buttons can make the layout weird for non fighting games, but in my experience with the Xbox version of this pad, the idea is that in fighting games you just map each button to the function you want it to have, and once you map the buttons it works like a charm.
@JayJ The pad issues in the Pro controller are noticeable mostly on certain games that demand precision. For instance on Super Metroid I find it very hard to wall jump consistently whereas on my SNES Classic I can do it effortlessly, and in Celeste you can make a lot of diagonal dashes when you actually intended to do horizontal ones.
I have the Xbox 360/One version of this pad, and it works exactly as intended. Excellent for fighting games. I might get the Switch version as well just to have a decent d-pad for platformers that need it, the Pro controller one sucks.
@sikthvash Exactly, just like how the main actor from El Mariachi (the first movie in the series) had a role in Desperado even if it was not the same character.
People complain a lot about the service, but for me it works flawlessly in the 2 games I play online, Splatoon 2 and Tetris 99. The Splatoon and classic Gameboy Tetris themes are so good I don't even look at new themes anymore. The music in the Splatoon one alone makes me want to play it again and again. But it's nice to know they keep adding content to an already fantastic game.
@Cupid This. I usually dislike when people seemingly get angry about any public statement these days, but that tweet was just a dumb thing to post from an official account, looks more like something an uneducated 12 year old would post.
I saw this game on Xbox GamePass and was tempted to try it, but I don't know if I have the time for another "infinite levels" game. But it sure looks interesting and quite funny.
I don't know if they should, but if they do, the main thing they need to fix first is making sure all their games are available worldwide. To date, most of their games aren't available in many countries, even the Switch app itself. Currently you have to fake your account country to download them.
One of the great things about Apple Arcade is that not only it offers plenty of great games, it's also available everywhere in the world from what I can tell, at the same cheap price.
@StevenG Again, you don't know what you are talking about. Every modern fighting game, including Smash, has additional DLC characters. It's the main and easiest way to maintain an active community in what is now a pretty niche genre. None of these characters were intentionally taken out for profit. Joker and Spawn in particular you can definitely see all the effort put into.
@BloodyMurder With all due respect, you have no idea what you're talking about. There was never a micro transaction issue in MK11. Some person started that rumor with incorrect data, and then everyone online started repeating it even though it was factually incorrect. What there was a serious grinding requirement, which was a problem near launch, but that was fixed not long afterwards. In fact, the people who actually played the game complained at the time that they wished there was a way to pay to not grind and just get everything. But you have never been required to pay for anything other that the additional characters and a few skins, just like every other fighting game.
@JayJ Doesn't work anymore, fighting games aren't as popular as they were before, and now the communities demand way much more out of them, otherwise people are quick to call it "dead". So while it's not ideal, I don't think any company making fighting games can be blamed for trying to maximize their profits somehow.
I personally have never been bothered by the friend code system. It's a thing you do once for every friend, without ambiguity (Is that a 0 or an O in your name?), and being completely anonymous in case you want to add a stranger.
Whereas on Xbox I made the mistake of putting my name in my gamertag way back when I created it, and now if I want to change it I have to pay US$10.
